Rise and shine Nordic countries! Let's have Nordic Cosplay thread (and let's hope that it will not turn out to be Swedish cosplay thread...).

Photos, drama, cosplay, Nordic Cosplay Championship, Swedish Cosplay Championship, J-popcon, Desucon, Närcon, Tracon... Tell your tales to us, Nordic fellows.

Yes, there are. Elffi isn't even one of the most impressive cosplayers in Finland nowadays, he just has what it takes to sell himself. Don't take it as an insult, Elffi fans, I just think that's how it is.

More great Finnish cosplayers, just to keep this thread alive (and to avoid the inevitable flood of Swedish invading the thread again)

Denmark here, thinning out the inevitable swedish.
Not sure what you want from us though, tales? Desucon? I have a tale from Desucon 2013 in Norway.
Was cosplaying Juliet from Lollipop Chainsaw (I'm a guy btw). Had done my very best to look like a girl, makeup, full body shave n stuff. There were some famous norwegian youtubers there, and I saw an interview of them after the con, where they were asked about something they liked from the con, and they mentioned me, and how I made them confused, very confused.
I thought it was funny, I'll go away now.

I saw the Finnish WCS group for 2013...I stalked their page, and I was not impressed. They are literally the only other Finnish cosplayers I have come across.

Elffi is the one cosplay export you guys have. Soz that you are so jelly of him and his fame.

Well none of our cosplayers are really that hungry for fame, I guess Lirlys is probably the next board famous one besides Elffi. I think it has to also do with the fact that a lot think Elffi as a manwhore so nobody wants the same reputation. Finns, always saying how great we are but nobody still wants internet fame.

Well, at least we won something in ECC this year. Can't really say she could be considered famous because of that.

>> No.7178613

Finns tend to keep their shit out of the international scene as much as possible so that may be why you haven't heard of any other finns but I'm pretty sure you have run into them while browsing tumblr/deviantart/cosplay.com/worldcosplay/etc :)

Ps. Not everyone wants to be famous cosplayer, so no reason for people to be jelly of him. And those who are, well, that's a different story.

I understand not everyone wants to be a famous cosplayer. But it's pretty obviously people are jealous of Elffi, or they won't keep posting about him on here. I keep seeing vendetta-posts, snarky little comments etc.

If no one else other Finns WANT to be famous than everyone can move on with their lives and stop posting about how much of a "manwhore" he is, or that his costumes "are shitty" and other generic bullshit I see all the time about him on here. He honestly doesn't even do that much except go to the occasional convention and turn up at WCS a lot to help out.

Can we talk about Finnish WCS team 2013? Worst team what Finland has sent! They didn't talk English and they acted like spoiled brats whole week in Japan. And one of them didn't celebrate in WCS party, because "she was still In the Character". And they have literally said, that they will come back to WCS! It was something the Finnish convention scene needed but some people have taken it the wrong way and have started making strickt lines between all things anime and other nerd culture. Honestly, I don't even.

I need to say that while she has a reputation as a diva (which she sadly is), it doesn't necessarily make her a bad organizer. She's devoted to her work and has a lot of experience from the competing side and she has ambitions. She can't be as bad as some other people I've seen organizing cons in Finland. While we're talking about cosplay organizers who can't take critique, we can all remember the fit one certain major organizer threw after losing the WCS competition last year. When I think about it, most cosplay organizers in Finland can't take critique or responsibility at all, and mostly place the blame either the people taking part in the contest being stupid or the other organizers being incompetent. Or anything other than themselves.

Cosplay organizing isn't as hard as you think it'd be, it just requires you to follow through on your intentions.

Really? I've always thought they take cosplay way too seriously and have some kind of mental issues or developmental problems due to their behavior. The way how they always take part in every contest there is and act like dicks to everyone else around is irritating to say the least. Yes, they can sew costumes because at least the other one is a professional costume maker but their props are always below-average in quality and their makeup sometimes goes way overboard. The material choices aren't always that good either. I've met them both backstage multiple times and it baffles me how inhumane they feel like. It's like they've received the Chinese ultimate training since childhood, sewing costumes in freezing temperatures and receiving hormonal costume-making shots, stripping them of all their humanity.

Even as I a a finn I actually really enjoy Swedish conventions (never been to Norway or Denmark so I have no experience of their conventions), there's a lot better vibe around the place and cosplayers are nicer to each other.. And let's not forget all the outdoor activities they have at Närcon! Too bad all the programs are in Swedish also (no wonder) so I can't really get to experience those.. But I also like some finnish conventions, especially Tracon, there's good panels and lectures, great cosplay competitions and the outdoor place is wonderful too.. I'm also sure that N&D have some really great conventions and think that there is no Nordic country with the best convention of them all.

The Issues are rather small in the end. The smaller the flaws, more room for bickering. A giant trainwreck of a con would only get some shrugs and "never again", the big cons (Tracon, Desucon, maybe Animecon) get critique for really small things. Like drinking water that is too cold.

>> No.7181915

>>7181903
Well, not exactly. There are cons that have struggled having enough visitors - like Bakacon which is held at Pieksämäki or newcomer Fanfest at Helsinki - and others have difficulties with organizing things properly (Animecon and apparently Yukicon). On the other hand, cons like Desucon and Tracon which doesn't need to worry about lack of congoers are trying to focus on making their cons even better. Correct me if I’m wrong in this but to my experience those two organizing groups are trying to improve their cons instead of doing what good old Animecon did, which was basically “well whatevz, people will come anyway so why bother fixing anything”

Not him, and not into the cosplay or con community, but I've been there many times. I've had fun there, but after I went to Banzaicon it really became clear how bad it is. One of the problems is that they only care about making money, so they'll never get anything that costs money. They are also trying to squeeze as much money as possible from their guests by selling special privileges like getting in an hour early or seats at front rows for extra money, which I don't like because it makes class differences at the cons and such.

They are also really monopolistic. They are refusing people who work at other cons to work for them, and they make cons at the same time as other cons so they'll fail when people can only afford one.

Another thing is that they have the exact same things every year, and they don't have that much to do in the first place. Not many panels or much to do.

I also hear they are really bad at judging the cosplay competitions. They always make people they know win, and the judges don't know much about crafting in the first place.

The people working there are angry and stressed, which makes it unpleasant to be there, and I imagine really bad to work there too.

When it comes to my experience, it was really bad this year, but fun the year before. This year, there was really nothing going on. They had moved to a new and bigger location, but they hadn't taken advantage of the bigger space, so there was nothing to do. The year before, it was super crowded (they sell tickets according to fire security rather than what's comfortable for people), so you could barely move, but the DS corner was fun, and the Minecraft LP was also fun. This year, they had removed all side activities like video games.

I think that Sweden isn't internationally "the best" one. Yes, there have been quite nice cosplayers sometimes, but just sometimes. Sweden isn't part of ECG nor WCS, so they don't stand out like a Finland and Denmark. And I know that Sweden has this "we are best cosplay country in Scandinavia!" because they have these couple nice cosplayer who have some name, but no, Sweden isn't internationally the best Nordic country.

Norway don't have name anywhere else than just in Nordic countries. They aren't part of WCS nor ECG, what makes them less noticed from rest of Nordics. And they don't have any "famous cosplayer" what regular cosplayer like me would heard. Only thing what makes them liiiitle bit noticed, is that FDP goes to Banzaicon, but that's all...

Finland has only "Elffi", and people misunderstand him either USA citizen OR German. Finland isn't part of ECG. But Finland has never been noticed in WCS (except when Elffi is there) so we can't count on that. Finland has some few "nice cosplayer" like Sweden has, but that doesn't get them too far.

But, then there is Denmark. Denmark is, for my option, the best internationally from Nordics. Even though their costumes aren't best ones, Denmark is part of WCS, ECG, ECC and NCC. They have won prizes, and cosplayers from Denmark has a lot of more "fame" than rest of Nordics cosplayers. They even advertise themselves and they has a lots of conventions where half of panels are indeed, in english.

The best internationally prize goes, for my option, to Denmark.

>> No.7188452

>>7188166
Buut, the best cosplayers prize goes to Finland. Even though the rest of Nordics has a nice cosplayers, Finland has more talent in craftsmanship. Here are my reasons why:

First, I want to say that I have been in every Nordic cosplay conventions, so I have seen what kind a cosplayers there are.

Swedish cosplayers don't make their costumes as accurate as they should be. Huge part of Swedish cosplayers makes their costumes like it would be year 2009. They use their own hair and they don't handle propmaking. These are just examples. I know that Sweden has those "super awesome cosplayers" but MOST of Swedish cosplayers just don't do accurate costumes.

Norway... Oh Norway. Norway has same thing like Swedish, but a little bit worse. Norwegian cosplayers use ducktape like there wouldn't be tomorrow, and they make a lots of casual costumes. Like I said before, there is better cosplayer, but you can't see them.

Then there is Denmark, what I nominated for being the best internationally cosplayers. Even though Danish has some name in Cosplay World, their costume don't give to it. Danish cosplayers usually focus on stage performance, forgetting to do costume as accurate as possible. They don't finish their costumes on time, what makes painting job or clothes seam looking bad. And same thing as always, there is better cosplayers, but most of it are usually like this.

And then there is Finland. Finnish cosplayers has the best craftsmanship and sewing on to costumes what I have seen. Finnish cosplayers usually makes a simple costume, but they make it so well, that it's fantastic. This isn't just a few cosplayer, it's most of cosplayers! They are really focused on those costumes, and they even try to make it accurate as possible, all around to embroidery to sewing methods. And their props are really well made. But, Finnish peoples has their dark side too.

But compared to others Nordics countries, Finland has the best cosplayers.

>> No.7188453

>>7188441
I agree. Sweden has some exceptionally talented cosplayers, but they only make up the top of a very small unknown community. (Not to mention that there is a lack of panels and information in English. It's at least getting better nowadays.)
Denmark's community feels more active and well known, with a better spread of talent, not to mention that it feels like they have a better international focus.

For example both 1st and 2nd place went to Denmark in NCC. I think that say's a lot.
(On the other hand I think it's worth mentioning that it feels like most "good" cosplayers don't take those competitions all too seriously so they are not really in it to win.)

>>7188441
>Norway don't have name anywhere else than just in Nordic countries. They aren't part of WCS nor ECG, what makes them less noticed from rest of Nordics.
Yeah, I think it's a bit weird because we don't lack that much in talent. I see lot of really top-tier cosplayers here but they don't ever seem to gain much recognition internationally or are not interested in competitions. It's a shame.

I don't really know any norwegian cosplayers, I couldn't mention anybody by name if you asked me right now, whereas I could mention a alot of danes and swedes and a couple of fins. (whats the correct term to use for a finnish person in english?)
So I honestly don't have much to comment on Norway, except they defiantly aren't the best scandinavian country when it comes to cosplay (nor football lolololol)

I think Denmark is the best when it comes to stage performance, they are very good at presenting their acts on stage as an actual play and they use many effects to impress, they defiantly take the prize on that part. (lets forget about this years wcs team, what an embarrassment).
With that said, I don't think they are that impressive with costumes... theres a few very good costumes but most of it is very small and if its big its not wellmade in details, and I think the reason for this is that materials and fabric is SHIT expensive in denmark, and the cosplayers are all very young and broke.
When they get a good job and get money, they are usually so old they aren't that into cosplaying anymore.
I mean ofcourse theres also just those who are bad at sewing/making cosplays, but I think my other point also stands.

Sweden is very good I think, but they lack in international competitions, and unlike Denmark they aren't that impressive on stage but better in costume making in general I think. I think swedish cons should try to get into more competitions, they have the talent but they don't have the opportunity to actually go long with it!
I wanna see sweden in big competitions and conventions over the world alot more, make it happen!!

What I don't get about Fnland is that they are really really good, maybe not so much stage as Denmark but they defiantly have amazing cosplays and some really good cosplayers.... why are they so fucking shit in wcs?
Always super bad or invisible, nobody notices them at the wcs.. get some good ones going!!!

>> No.7188636

Reason WHY Finland has a shitty wcs pairs is purely this: WCS competition is advertised in Finland as "free trip to Japan", not as "World Cosplay Summit". WCS judges (whom never change) has said that no-one should take WCS seriously.
Another reason is that Finnish cosplayers are horrible when it comes to pair/group cosplay competition. Usually it's really awkward stage performance with dancing or fighting.... But when it comes to solo competition (NCC, EC), there is more participants and more nice performances (but still awkward fighting...).

>> No.7188693

>>7188636
The main problem with WCS in Finland is that the judging is so inbred it's not worth the try if you're aware of the fact. I've never competed in WCS nor do I want to but when each year the same judges choose their friends to be the winners (with last year being an exception), participating loses its point. For example, I will never, ever understand this year's winning couple, their skit wasn't nearly as good as some of the other participants and the costumes were average and inaccurate. But they were friends with the judges, so there you go.

But it's true that the skits I see in Finnish cosplay competitions are rarely inventive, funny, entertaining or anything other than inside jokes of the show, random fights, walk-ins or dancing. Sometimes there are creative skits that don't require any beforehand knowledge of the show (such as the Little Witch Academy at this year's WCS competition which got a honorable mention) and well-organized skits that capture your interest (such as the winning ECS skit from last year). But often I kind of tune out in the audience during every other skit.

>> No.7188711

>>7188693
Last year wasn't exception. Even though twins wasn't good friends with judges, there still did have some "we-know-you" relationship going on. So yeah, these days you can get to WCS IF you are very good friends to judges, or you know them for some reason.

>> No.7188713

I think that Finland has this problem that we have to "represent" everytime we get into an international competition. We think more about making a good impression on everyone, being social, not making anyone mad, etc. Also the fact that we focus on craftsmanship instead of performance is a downside when thinking about World Cosplay Summit. It can't be called a real competition, but I think that us Finns tend to forget that even if we can't WIN something we could at least try and leave an impression.

I feel almost bad for wanting Finland's 2014 team to place 2nd again. They were so butthurt about it last year that it was hilarious.

But tbh, they had the best skit out of all the contestants in the prelims and since WCS is more about the stage performance than craftsmanship, I wasn't surprised that they won. Their detailed detailed and neat costumes were just a plus.
While some of the teams competing might have had better costumes and all that shit, their skits consisted of awkward sword fights or terribad dialogue and acting with equally broken English. And then there was that one pair that tried to be funny by using memes...

I don't know, I think the rachel was worse than meruru. Her state act was really bland and boring, and it's really odd that she'd take part with the same character Umi had previously in the same competition. It's a lot easier to judge that way and her costume, especially compared to Umi's, wasn't that well made.
Meruru as a whole did better, the costume was nice and the act wasn't boring.

Instead of talking shit about her, I have some critique.

She's clearly in her element when hosting cosplay competitions. However, I think it's getting repetitive. I wish she'd try and reinvent herself a bit. Come up with something new, so it wouldn't be the same old Rimppu-show we see every time she's on stage. I'm sure she has her fans, who'll like her regardless, but there's so much unused potential it's killing me. And I don't think she wants the blind worshipping her *cough* younger fans emit on her.

Also I hate how often she goes for the cheap joke. It sometimes comes across like she's undermining the contestant in order to get some laughs for herself. I love her the best when she uplifts the contestant while still being funny. Or clearly makes them relax a little on stage. So more of that, pls.

Any good swedish cosplayers? I want new faces to look at

I'm definitely mediocre at best, but it doesn't mean I can't tell a difference between a good costume and a bad costume. To me, elitism is about appreciating perfection and trying to achieve it yourself, but considering my skill level is pretty shit (even though I have made costumes that I've been incredibly proud of, craftsmanship-wise; see >>7180668
), there's only so much I can do. I do my best with the resources and the skill set I have. Sometimes I'm happy with the results, sometimes I'm not.

>>7190157
Aw yiss, proper critique! These are all things I've actually been struggling with for a while now; knowing that I pretty much give the same performance over and over again and not being all that happy with it, no matter how much the audience seems to enjoy it. I'm currently thinking of with ideas for Desucon Frostbite, so I'll take this as a challenge and figure out something new.

Norway here.
The cosplay scene is very dead. Although here the other day I met a girl dressed up as mikasa while I was working in the grocery store. Strange thing is that I live in a small remote valley town.

I regret not asking her name, very much, because the probability for something like this to ever happen again ain't there. She was so damn cute.

You mean except the typical Jözz, Figgarow and the rest of the JoC group?

If anyone is interested, here are Rachel's and Meruru's performance in NCC qualifiers:

Nah, you're just going to the wrong cons.

Well... That Rachel isn't THAT bad. She did have awkward self-fighting there, but her "music" was really good and well made.

This is the reason. I have been looking for more info on this cosplayer after seeing her at Spillexpo.no outside Oslo this weekend. I was so impressed with her costume. The legs are backwards, almost. And the glowing eyes. I must admit, she is both scary and sexy!

Yes, I found her facebook page:
facebook(dotcom)(slash)GrotesqueKawaii

It even includes "the making of" the costume :)

When in doubt, post them.

They weren't making the costumes in the locker room, they were fixing a broken zipper that almost made them cancel the participation.

Guys, would you like to post pictures of these awesome cosplayers? And some names or pages!

Haha, loved that "idea lamp"-effect Meruru had. Rachel's performance wasn't bad either, but it was kinda typical for a Finnish skit (monologue/dialogue --> some fighting --> afterword). Watching some skits from countries with more innovative skit ideas does help the problem with her future NCC skits, and maybe skits after that?

>They never said they were better than the winners

I distinctively remember Ilona saying that "we were the best couple in the contest" in that blog post unless she has edited it. That and the temper tantrum on the stage is why I lost my respect for her.

Anyway if they made face like this on stage, I think it's better that they had one more year to fix their attitude.

She just recently entered a cosplay contest with a huge prop she had comissioned, in other words didn't make herself.

>> No.7190600

Shouldn't be a problem if she let the judges know. If she didn't it's a whole other story.

If the prop makes up for about 50% of the costume and is the most elaborate part of it, then yes, it is a problem.

>>7190584
You sure? I remember reading about how she made it in her blog.. (if you mean that wheel thing she had in Tracon, because that is the only huge prop I've seen with her..)
Anyways she does know how to sew, but she really lacks skills in make-up.. Like most of the finns..

The only props that come in my mind are the ones she had at the contests in Tracon and Katsudocon and they're both selfmade, she wrote about both of them in her blog. She usually makes all of her costumes + makes costumes for others so it's hard to think that she would enter a contest with a commissioned prop.

Probably isn't enough demand, probably.

It was exactly her Tracon's contest costume that I heard from a couple of people had been commissioned. I've never read her blog though and I'd never heard of her before Tracon and the rumors of her commissioning her things either, so those were just rumors.

Other than entering a contest with a huge comissioned prop, how the hell could you include her on the list. Her costumes are barely average and half of them are closet cosplay tier. I mean she writes stuff like this:

>Well, to make it short: I attented Animecon in Kuopio, Finland a few weeks ago as Hipster Pinkie Pie. And as I had promised, I carried loud speakers and played remixed songs from MLP the whole time. Just for laughs.

Shin-Shin or whatever it is people call her nowadays is an amazing cosplayer, makes great costumes. (From Finland, yes) But I've been told by numerous of people, and noticed, that she's a huge prick towards others whom disagree with her, childish as hell, gets super butthurt easily and is just downright rude. People have asked her how she did some parts of her costumes, and she just turned them down rudely, saying that it's her ''professional secret''. Finland has alot of great cosplayers with great personality, then there are those whom are just assholes. (The twins, for example.)

And stop saying stuff about Elffi. He's a GREAT cosplayer and yes, he's trying to make LIVING OUT OF SOMETHING THAT HE LOVES. Are you people seriously going to snort at artists too that they take money for having people listening to their music!? People NEED to make a living out of things, and he's trying to make a living of something that he loves! So shut up. And he's GREAT in person, not a stuck up arsehole like those whom were mentioned before.
