I don't get all these people who post in a community and don't want criticism, either. So many poorly dressed people use the excuse that "it's a fashion don't tell me how to dress!"or "this is my take on it" well to me it seems like they hate the fashion if they try to change it so much, atleast call it something else. Honestly I think the main problem with it is how lolita is portrayed, it's not all inclusive and it's definitely brand driven. Although gyaru is more niche, with much higher standards of presentation as far as looks and style goes I think it's a much more grounded comm, even with the bitchiness. All in all, tumblr is really destroying a lot of good things with the "fresh out of gender issues" mentality many people hold, and the same logic and hugbox mentality is seeping into daily life.

Sorry for writing a book by the way, I just hate people mucking up my fashion.

Lolita definitely caters to a certain type of person more than it does others. However, I'm also one of those optimists that believes it's not impossible for people who don't fit that narrow mold to look good. It just takes more work for them because they have to look harder to find flattering pieces.

Unfortunately, as we've discussed, criticism is either dis-regarded--our spats-loving friend featured in this thread is famous for this--or discouraged. A combination of that hugbox mentality and the aforementioned trend towards wanting to make experimental outfits that are 'unique' and 'interesting' (often at the cost of looking good) only makes this worse.

Like you said, it's in part because they disregard fashion and guidelines. In fact, I think some of them don't look at it like it's a fashion at all and instead more of a collector's hobby. (Possibly because of how popular prints have become?) It seems like a lot of them would rather spend their money on a sought-after item that looks terrible on them than something that's plainer, less popular or off-brand, but would look better. I also like the idea of offering hints and criticism to make Lolita work for a wider range of people, but even that is taboo to some degree because it involves making remarks on someone's personal appearance.

That being said, I think part of the reason that the LJ gal comms is dying off is because of the community's attitude and reputation--excessive bitchiness/exclusivity can hurt the quality and standards of a fashion comm, too. A lot of people in the gal threads have had some good discussions about it. I think a happy medium between the two would be best: a focus on thorough criticism and higher presentation standards with a healthy amount of bitchiness on the side.

The only good news about tumblrite ita crap is that most, besides people like hildekitten, of the noobs who join the fashion in that way leave pretty fast: They do it for attention so to keep getting attention for dressing funny they have to keep changing the way they dress. Yep. Honestly the mixing of gal with lolita was probably one of the greatest things to ever happen to lolita. There are less chubby frumpy looking girls and more head to toe well groomed and styled girls than there used to be.

Have them take a lower angle. I usually do that when I'm taller than someone and taking a picture. Hold the camera down lower, make sure you get the legs and top of the head (headbow) in with a little room, and take it. Instead of holding the camera right up to your face. Pretty simple.

"Good" lolitas within the community who have immersed themselves so deeply therein seem to care more about whether or not a person is following the "correct" procedure in coordinating their outfit than if they actually look good in it or not. It comes down to having the correct pieces in the correct places, and if you don't then you've failed no matter how good you might look objectively. If you do not wear the uniform as instructed, you're ita.

Enter unbiased third party. A person from outside the lolita community who has not been immersed into all of those rules and instead values the outfits purely on aesthetics. It could be argued that their opinion matters much more than that of the swarm of ruffled harpies within the lolita community for that reason alone. They don't care if you "did it right," because the person who supposedly sucks might look much better than the proper lolita and they recognize that.

It's like how little kids speak very honest truths because that's what they see. If a little kid calls you fat, you're fat. If a kid says you're pretty, you're pretty. If a normalfag thinks an unconventional lolita without a petticoat looks better than a proper lolita, it's because she does.

Oh god I want this so bad. I wish there was an abundance of plump/heavy Lolitas who dressed like this, now. Super-elegant styles are my favorite and this would be just awesome to see. Similar horror story.

My mom was a hoarder. Also a heavy smoker. My siblings were all heavy smokers. Even when they moved out, they'd come to visit daily (and their kids, eventually all started smoking). Since there was so much stuff, and so much smoking everything would be covered in a thick coat of dust and tar. The dogs would regularly go on the carpet, though aside from being picked up, it just sunk into the flooring. Brother and niece moved in and would never flush the toilets, leave food sitting in moldy dishwater for days (when I wasn't home, when I was I wouldn't let it get that bad), plates of food and piles of ashes all over the computer so when I'd come home I'd have to clean it all up. Came home from a con and no shit, about 12 three inch long ash-pillars whatever they're called flung all the way to the wall on top of the router. Food piled up with a trash can right there (empty). Anything that came out of the house reaked.

When I had the chance, I moved out, my mom eventually ended up with lung cancer. Towards the end, the house looked very much like the one in the picture of the messy ita. Basement celing caved in, flooded before and I think black mold was growing. Brother finally flushed the toilet and it clogged, and it caved in the ceiling above the stove. It's sad because it was pristine and freshly painted when we moved in. My dad's repaired a lot of the house since she passed away, took out the nasty carpet, repainted, got rid of the smell and most of the nasty, but it still needs a lot of work.

All of this really happened over the span of about 8 years to get to that condition. It wasn't too bad the first 5 years we lived there. Just really the lack of care, and a bunch of nasty ass relatives. I have a habit of clutter, but thankfully not that complete level of nasty and lazy.

I know the feeling anon. I grew up in a house where they left all the cleaning to my poor grandmother when we had 7 people living in the house. The carpet was saturated with animal urine, the walls had urine on them and corners were shredded from the cats clawing at them. Dogs and cats would urinate on the furniture.

Probably the cleanest carpet in the house was my bedroom because I kept it shut up when I wasn't there, and if I did, animals would come in and piss/shit on the floor WHILE I was sitting there. They tore all the carpet up in the house, except for a couple bedrooms. Put down veneer tiles. Animals pissed on it so much that tiles were coming up. People's solutions to cleaning it up? Throw a towel on top of it and leave the towel there for days at a time and never bother moping. I grew up with a weaker immune system and my parents made up excuses from it being from when I was a baby but probably it was caused by living in a filthy disgusting house with animal urine and feces everywhere.

Funny thing is, it was never that bad until we lived in that house.
