Can we get general a help thread going?

There's lots of threads over the board asking for help especially since Halloween is coming up and it'd probably be good to have them all in one place.

>> No.7153921

Does anyone have tips for the following;

1. Making eyes more expressive and anime-like without looking shit.

2. My character has 'fish-lips' and its something I want to get across in the cosplay. What is the best way of making lips (a) more pink and (b) larger than they really are.

3. What is the best way to add a sense of weight to papercraft? I'm making goggles for my char this way but I don't want them to break easily or look hollow and fake. The item I'm trying to make is made of metal in the anime, I'm sure there's a spray to create this effect, right?

4. Is there a place where people sell their second hand cosplay items?

I'm doing a MSF uniform from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. I'm trying to make it as accurate as possible, but I'm on a really limited budget.
What I need for it to be 100% accurate is a SPIE harness, like the top picture. However, I can't get one or even the next best thing, a STABO harness, for less than £200.

I can, however, get the one pictured below for £10. It doesn't have the crotch straps, but do you guys think it'd be an acceptable substitute? I really lack the awareness of how inaccurate costumes are judged to be able to make this call alone.

>> No.7154509

>>7154428

I personally think you should just make the damn harness myself. They are not complicated and you don't need it to be combat ready. Just go to your closest fabric store and buy some olive drab straps, buckles and adjusters. If you have access to a sewing machine and the patience to learn you'll be fine. It's easier to make on a limited budget than to buy. 200 pounds could probably get you a sewing machine even if you don't already have one.

I think the one you posted is fine. For me at least, a tiny bit of accuracy should not cost me an £190+

I can see some cons that are pushing the 'family friendly' aspect getting their panties in a twist. You'll likely be asked to change, not kicked out right off the bat. If you're bringing a backpack, carry a spare shirt.

Hey /cgl/

I've been working on a Solaire cosplay for awhile and was wondering how to do the pants. Since I'm actually going to add chainmail to them and have the steel plates around them, I was thinking about pants with suspenders to help hold the weight.

Now I'm thinking about getting some khaki coloured overalls because they seem sturdier then just suspenders. Since the tabard and armor will cover most of it, it should just look like pants. Thoughts on that? Also how would I go about securing chainmail to pants? Grommets with chain through them? Just use thread? Any tips would be appreciated.

Sand it down with fine sandpaper (~600-800 grit), cover it in primer, sand the primer the same way until you end up with something nice and smooth, and THEN paint it. Paint will never, ever look good if your starting surface is rough and ragged, preparation is everything. Use gloss paint and hit it with clearcoat afterwards to protect it and give extra shine.

You can just sand the paint off once it's dry, get some 80 or 100-grit paper and it should come off pretty easy. Just watch for when you get through the paint, you don't want to gouge the wood itself up too bad or it'll take a lot more sanding to get smooth again.

Once you prime it, also consider wetsanding if you want to get it really silky-smooth. Just keep the surface wet and rinse your sandpaper off every so often. But two words of caution; first, you HAVE to get special wet-dry sandpaper, the normal stuff will disintegrate when you get it wet. Practically anywhere that has sandpaper will have both kinds, even Walmart. And second, don't try and wetsand the bare wood, the water soaks into the wood fibers and it'll get fuzzy when you sand it. Wetsanding isn't necessary at all but it gives you a super nice finish and it's not exactly difficult. Just make sure you do some kind of fine-grit sanding after primer.

For your clearcoat, just get some plain Krylon (it's best not to mix paint brands, just in case) clearcoat spray. Acrylic is fine, you don't need to mess with enamels, they're not nearly as friendly to work with. Just look for something that's clear and gloss and you should be fine.

Broadcloth is the cheapest stuff on the rack (aside from maybe mulsin, which is actually okay for some things), it'll probably say it's broadcloth and a lot of it is gonna be cotton/polyester blend. Avoid it.

I'm not an expert, but Kona cotton has always been what I've seen recommended as a minimum on /cgl/. I went from using broadcloth at first to that and noticed an immediate difference in how it behaved when I sewed. If you have a Joann's, they should have all sorts of Kona cotton.

okay, wait, just to clarify:

1. sand the paint off
2. primer (krylon primer in all purpose white, yes?)
3.wetsanding (in which I wet it, get special sandpaper that i also wet, and sand it as normal?)
4. spray paint the color i want (krylon pink)
5. clearcoat (Kylon clear / gloss coat)

right?

>> No.7156167

>>7156126
Pretty much. Easiest way to wetsand is just turn the faucet on really low in the tub or something and let the water run over it as you sand, you don't have to do it for too long as your primer should be fairly smooth to begin with. It gets you a nicer finish because it washes away the dust and debris as you sand, which is less gunk stuck in your sandpaper that can leave scratches in your workpiece. I've just used the hose outside in the past, but if your weather is anything like mine it's way too chilly to be doing that right now.

You don't need white primer specifically, the everyday stuff is usually gray but it doesn't really matter. Just avoid any specialty primers for automotive or that sorta thing.

So I've just got a general curiosity on masquerade skits.

Not long ago, my friend and I did a skit with a particular song with our cosplays, but the skit didn't work out on stage due to a combination of technical issues and I had an accidental injury that prevented me at the last minute from being able to do as rehearsed.

I've heard that it's looked down upon to reuse a previous skit. My partner and I have since continued on doing other skits, but we were curious of whether other people have replicated or repeated a skit at another con (or the same con the following year) as like a second (and better) attempt at it? We would be considering to remake new costumes and add edits to the original version.

I just was curious about it, since we're also really not looking to win anything from it. I think if we did it'd be cool, but it'd be more as a personal redemption for that past time and to showcase our work better this round.

You're not going to have a lot of options at like 4 working days. I would suggest for the horns using hell probably cardboard or PVC piping if you can get it, they probably won't look good. Armor will be the same. Cardboard + Duct tape will look shitty, but If you want a spectacular looking set by the end of the week you're kind of SOL.

I've never had one of those sacks so I'm not sure how much it can withstand, but you can always try installing some grommets so you can slide some straps in there like those really cheap drawstring swag bags.

As for me, I'm a beginner at sewing garments. I've tried drafting things and, unless it's extremely simple, they always turn to shit so I'm bought pattern only until I can figure out what I'm doing. So, I was hoping to try my hand at pic related, but I can't seem to find anything suitable. I don't know if it's because of my search terms or what. They either have the perfect shape, but wrong neckline or vice versa. I was thinking maybe a Jessica Rabbit type pattern would be great, but I only seem to find self drafted patterns and not any good bases. Would you guys have any idea what sort of pattern I should go for since I can't find anything perfect?

Second thing, for her wig, would it be best to have a bobbed wig or straight one as a base?

First time attempting a cosplay. Halloween party coming up Friday. Want to make a full Ryuk costume by then.

How deep of shit am I in? Also, any ideas on how to do it?

>> No.7158826

I hate to be that guy and ask here but I want to start cosplaying and making some costumes, I just don't know of what to conform with my body-type. I'm about 6'2 and around 300 pounds, broad shoulders and barrel chested. I'm trying to avoid costumes that would cost an arm and a leg right now, like full armor sets but that seems to be all I get recommended for.
Anyone have any ideas that could send me in the right direction?

How about NL6454? Use view D - add wider straps and skip the contrast godet. If you use a slinky fabric, it ought to fall correctly. As for the neckline, that's super easy to change; just sew the shape you want. In this case, the pattern'll say something about sewing the top of the bodice. Instead of a straight line, mark out and sew a sweetheart shape.

I bought a very thick wool coat a while back. It doesn't have a lot of waist definition because it only has a few cheap snap buttons at the top. Since one half of the front folds over the other half, I've been thinking about just putting in some velcro, but I've never done this before and I don't want to mess up my coat. I wasn't sure if this would be better off in Lolita general or here, but I felt it can be a general topic so here goes: help me wash a filthy suede skirt.

I brought a suede skirt second hand, and to say the seller lied about the condition of it would be an understatement. The damn thing was filthy. I've gently brushed off the surface stains to the best of my ability, however the skirt still has a 'dirty' look and feel to it.

Now, I got my money back and there's no way i'd wear it in its current state. The skirt was only cheap off brand, and the dry cleaners wants double what I paid for it. I know you shouldn't get suede wet, but i'm willing to risk it. If it gets fucked, it gets fucked.

People on the internet have conflicting advice and success stories. Some say don't use fabric softener or detergent(washing powder?), others say use them. Some say just surface wash it, some say chucking the thing in a washing machine will be alright as long as you brush it afterwards.

So, tl;dr any advice of handwashing this thing? For whatever reason, i'd feel more reassured by any advice my fellow seagulls gave me before I just went to town of this skirt.

Kind of stupid but I want to go as a younger Banehallow from DotA 2. Since I have less than a week to get in together, I figured I would just go for the pants, overcoat, boots, and beard/facial hair.

Where would be a good place to get pants like that and possibly an overcoat? It doesn't have to be exactly like it since I can attempt to make it look more like Banehallow's coat, but yeah, something sort of like it. Boots should be easy to get, as well as the hair.

I'm leaving off the shoulder armour since that's for battle and before the house of Ambry fell he wouldn't need to wear it all the time. Don't know if I want to do the bottom teeth either. I might.

Trying to work out how to do the little metal(?) ring in Trucy's hair. I don't know how to make this in such a way that I can get the bun through the metal ring and then have it sit there comfortably. It seems like if I make the ring big enough to get the hair through, it'll just slide off.

Suggestions?

Try iron-on-transfer paper. It looks less rough than trying to paint by hand. What I've done in a similar situation is this - print design on to iron-on-transfer, iron onto some cheap cotton, then appliqued the resulting 'patch' onto my clothes with bondaweb/wonder-under/vliesofix (is there a generic term for this?? Sticky applique stuff.)

Glue the underside - you mean right to the wig? Seems like a high risk of fucking up my wig with glue

Even then though I still have to make it large enough for the hair to get through in the first place, so even if it's stuck in place it might look too big?

My bf and I are planning on doing a Silver and Crystal cosplay for a small Pokemon-themed con in January. I've been trying to think of a way to tackle Crystal's wig for awhile and haven't really committed to a single idea yet. Every wig attempt I've seen trying to make her hair 100% accurate has turned out looking bulky and weird (pic related), so I was thinking of making her hair a bit more like Lyra's from HGSS instead of the 90 degrees pigtail look... Something that large is definitely not a beginner project for using resin, or even really a project for resin at all. Even if it did cure correctly, the sheer mass of it means doing so would probably take literal weeks. Plus it'd be ridiculously expensive, resin ain't cheap. You're 98% likely to spend a ton of money and end up with nothing more than a mess.

If you want a transparent sword, a far better way to begin is polycarbonate plastic, aka plexiglass/lexan/what have you. The basic stuff is just clear, but you can get translucent paints that you can use to tint it red without ruining the transparency. There's precolored polycarbonate out there, but I'm gonna hazard a guess that it's way more expensive than what the normal kind and a can of paint would add up to. Home Depot has it in sheets of various sizes and thicknesses but it's very pricey there, I'd suggest looking for an online source instead if you decide to try it.

There ARE alternatives using resin depending on how thick you want your sword to be in the end, but all of them are messier, more complicated, and more expensive than polycarbonate.

What's the best way to get a big poofy feathery thing like is around this guy's neck? A really fluffy feather boa is really all that's coming to mind immediately, but I feel like that'd look way tacky. I'm seeing it as kind of like a coat with fur around the collar, but with feathers instead.

rainbow feathers is a great place for large turkey feathers, but I suggest looking up fake feather wing tutorials since they save you big on weight and cash.

For the boa, it would have to match the wing's colors. If you look at other references for Black waltz, you can see that the feather collar thing doesn't go totally around the neck. But yes, I suggest a feather boa with large feathers and then add in feathers you used for the wings gradually

In game there's no real texture so you could use anything without an obvious grain. A leatherette makes the most sense though since the gloves, straps, etc all look the same black. Takes a little while to find a nice leatherette without too much of a texture to it, but it's not impossible.

Your next-best option is probably just the center back, even thought it'd be kind of a pain to get into alone. 98% of anime outfits are impossible to put on or take off as-drawn anyway, so even if you have a zipper showing it's not a huge deal.

No idea if this question belongs in any other thread, but I'll ask it anyway.

I'm going to cosplay as a young character. As a young male adult, I've got hairy legs, and generally young boys don't have such hairy legs. And also, guys generally don't shave their legs. Should I do the cosplay anyway and hope no one will mind that I'm cosplaying a young character that somehow has hairy legs? Could I cover it up somehow? Would anyone care if I shaved? They're not like, SUPER hairy, but they're hairy.

Sincerely, a confused anon.

Just shave, it'll grow back.

Who's gonna care in your life? Better to shave and avoid the wrath of 100 catty /cgl/ bitches.

>> No.7184788

Perhaps some opaque pantyhose/tights? It's probably less girly to shave your legs, but speaking as a guy that's done a ton of bare legged characters, it's better to have both, but if you absolutely don't want to shave, wear some tights or pantyhose instead.

>> No.7185215

>>7184684
I'll consider. It'd only be for a few days and, you're right, hopefully no one should care too much, it'd be done for the sake of a character.

>>7184788
I've also considered this, but I've always been worried tights look too shiny or not skin like. That and I'd have to find some that match my skin color.

Personally, I wouldn't use existing knee protectors, I'd start off with a thicker base layer ( maybe like, 10mm foam ), then work up the extra detaips via layering.

AH I;'m gonna be starting Juniper's uniform soon! What con are you wearing her to??

As for the dress, my base pattern is gonna start out from McCalls 6102, get the fit I want and then pattern out the pleats. Its not really super hard to do, it'll just take a bit of work. I've never really found a fully pleated dress sadly.

Katsu, not sure if I'll be able to make it with work and all but I really want to give it a go. Yeah my two biggest worries were the pleats and the bishop sleeves because who doesn't hate sleeves, right

I'll be Juniper at Katsu so I really hope I'll see you there!

The sleeve shouldn't be too bad, it's pretty easy to find a pattern for that at least. But I know sleeves can be a pain in the butt for a lot of people. I honestly don't think the pleats will be so bad. I can try and post my pattern whenever I finish my dress. I have a crap ton of muslin I was going to experiment on to get the pleating right.

What would I look for in terms of a good pattern to use as a base for a military uniform? Namely, a Zeon uniform from Gundam, as pictured.

Also, what kind of material would be 'realistic'-looking but not oppressive to wear? I have a weird tendency to overheat way faster than I should at cons, so lightweight stuff is good. And would using Heat'n Bond be my best option for the design on the chest?

Trying to figure out fabric for this.

I was thinking maybe something like a bridal satin, but I'm up for suggestions. I don't have a targeted date for this, so I have time to mull the project over.

Bridal satin would be nice. Or, if you want to really splurge and go crazy, a red dupioni or taffeta shot in black would be really neat, since her shading on that piece is so intense.

Yeah. I'll probably be hitting up the fashion district for most of the fabric.

I actually have this fabric that's the really rich red color. It's a heavier satin fabric so it's kind of shiny. I've used the shinnier side in at least one costume and have a ton left over. But I worry that it's too shiny for the dress.

I don't have larger photos and I cropped to the parts that actually used the red fabric I'm talking about.

Then of course I browse tumblr and this image pops up and I'm wondering if a bit of sheen would really be that bad?

Maybe I should just take a sample of the fabric with me when I hit the fashion district and compare it to the different fabrics there and see if the sheen works or not?

Go with taffeta that has a black warp and a red weave.

It is what my shirt is sitting on. It has a nice deep intense color that matches the shading on the art.

Is there any dye that can stick to the vinyl's plastic witouth making it hard or breaking ?
If not, is there anything that could give a nice gradient effect and be shiny ?

>> No.7186703

>>7186676
Depends on what you are looking for and usage. Timeless trends is on the cheap side (without it being crap) but they tend to not be as curvy as some other brands like What Katie did. There is also orchard corsets and merchantes that are at a good price point. Anything cheaper than 100 will be pretty shitty, but if you are using it for cosplay that may be passable.

Airbrush

Sticks to most stuff and will do that effect pretty well. If you don't have one or know someone with one or want to pay someone to do it, there are some little canned air powered ones that are cheap I believe. Doubt a local airbrush guy would charge much for that though.

hey guys, back with another question.
Does anyone here knows anything about dry ice?
How long does a little piece of it lasts while in water? (therefore, how long does it produce smoke)
How long can it last simply stored in a thermic box? I know it won't last much because it needs a really low temperature to be stored, but I needed to bring it to a con.

>> No.7187753

>>7187614
I would find an alternative. It can cause frost burns on skin contact and your talking about bringing it to a place with a lot of people could be a hazard.

It would store fine, but not last long. There are compressed smoke makers like a smoke machine but in an extinguisher so it doesn't require power. Be smart with that though some people have asthma we are nerds after all.

If you can get a hold of Battride Wars I'm pretty sure it has all the riders up to Wizard.
I'm not sure on the actual specifics of ripping the models or changing to a pepakura friendly format though.

Expanding a wig with an elastic band.

The manufacturer tends to make them on the small size so its painfully tight, but everything else is really good about it so I want to do this well. I've heard two ways to do this.

1. Cut between all the wefts and sew the band to all of them for even distribution.

2. Just cut a by the ear tabs on each size and add a small part to each size.

Its a fairly shaggy wig so I think 2 may manage without making a bald spot but I really like this thing so I want to do whats best. On the other hand cutting everything increases the chance of mistakes.
