I miss old school in the sense that it's hard to fuck up when everything other than the dress is solid white or black. Now people just throw on a printed EVERYTHING and it's just one giant cluster fuck of indistinguishable pastel shapes. The only thing that hasn't been hit with print yet is blouses, but I see that coming in the future.

I love prints, but a lot of people seriously do not have the fashion sense to wear them in an appealing way.

Aprons are adorable, and I really don't see the stigma with them. Going full on maid is one thing, but just wearing an apron is completely different. If you wear one with a classic style it looks somewhat authentic too depending on the style of the apron.

I don't miss the aesthetic of Oldschool Lolita, but rather miss the ethereal feeling that it came with it. Innocence, elegance, quietness... the way that it was portrayed at that time, and how big names like Novala Takemoto and Mana represented it.
Right now, we are portrayed as rude girls pretending to be cute, always competing to see who's the best and ashaming the worse. Who knows, maybe that remembrance of the past will come again in the future.

I doubt it.
Fixating an image from bad to good is nearly impossible. People will always remember the bad you've done rather than the good and are more likely to associate you with the bad, too.

I just saw how old it is and I was really surprised. I had no idea it was that old. Time flies for a lolita veteran. Although it also makes me a bit bitchy because girls who have been into the fashion for a quarter of the time I have been have closets that put mine to shame. It's worse when they can't coordinate/style properly.

But anyway, old school lolita will always have a special place in my heart. I look fondly back to the times when everyone ordered from In The Starlight and almost no one had brand. So people bragged (and were looked up to) about owning series like Meta's Lovely Alphabet which is actually kinda fugly. And the tutorials! There were so many. I also meet the abundance of meet up posts. And the lolita stock photos account on Flickr that always got spammed. Oh, and I wish I still had the pictures I saved from Lolita Snap, there were so many pretty old school pictures on there. When did LS end?

I don't miss the days of Biscuit Ribbon, though. What were you thinking, Meta?!

I think there's also a sort of unspoken sentiment these days that simple, plain or less 'out there' coordinates = boring. People want to have a unique style and are eager to stand out, but sometimes that makes them do weird things that aren't aesthetically pleasing (random or unbalanced colors, not sticking to a theme, too many prints, piling on too much stuff etc.). It's like they've forgotten that taking a basic, simple coord and tweaking it can make it visually interesting.

I think experimental or OTT cords need the most thought and planning, but that's not something people readily realize sometimes.

Either way, these images reminded me of a time when wigs were seldom used and even then, it was advised that natural colors were best. Now wigs are common and people suggest you coordinate them with your outfit in styles like OTT sweet. It's not a bad thing, but I think it's interesting how much some stuff has changed.

I like the direction the style's taken now, but I also miss the quiet elegance of old school. These images were what I cut my teeth on.

Like I said, there's a way you can make coords visually interesting without going overboard. My strategy is to pick out plain pieces with beautiful details (pintucking, ruffling, etc.), keep the rest very basic as far as my outfit goes and choose some elegant, eye-catching accessories.
