The show works with what it has. The weakness of the world itself becomes more apparent when written for the screen. The cringe-inducing way the author wrote his "barbarian" cultures is an example of this. It's not just Jason Momoa, the poor idiot worked with what he had.

I believe he did say something like that. They do make Stannis seem more like a patsy in the show, but I don't like him regardless. He's too intense about certain things and then not emotional enough about others, so it's hard to like him as a character. As a king... I don't know.
