/cgl/ - Cosplay & EGL

I just saw you on /vp/ and came here to see what replies you got about /cgl/, only to see the thread barren...

I'm afraid that's very typical of /cgl/. Very slow board, if it's not drama or colourful pictures we're not interested.

We hate "I'm new to cosplay, please help" threads, because we run a general help thread where people should post questions looking for help. What advice you get depends on the type of cosplay you want to do.

General advice though? Stay simple on your first try, and gradually build up your skills. Either way, be ready to invest money in this hobby that can get ridiculously expensive.

As for best/worst/sexiest... Look around the board, we argue on these topics all the time.

Also, you forgot lolitas. They actually constitute a large population of this board. They also like drama and shitposting about other community members online, but mostly use /cgl/ to price check dresses, share co-ord inspiration, and taobao (basically big giant Chinese ebay) finds.

Hope this gave a concise overview of what the board is, I tried to be nice.

Where did you begin your journey?

With the plethora of info gathered in google and youtube the how-tos of construction shouldn't be too hard.

The best cosplay I've ever seen is CJ Collin's rendition of Kefka. He was so good I wish they asked him to voice the English Dissidia games. I'm also very impressed by REIKA's (from Japan) Jean Killstein because of the attention she gives to makeup.

The sexiest? Hmm... I never really think about it that way. When I was a wee high school girl aeons past there was a guy who wore a cat costume to cons that I fangirled over like crazy. I think his cosplay name was something like "Ashita." I look back and it all seems awfully weebish, but, eh. These days I don't see it as sexy even if by conventional logic it should be seen as such. I'm more absorbed in the little intricacies costumes have. It started as an obsession with beads and detail work, then electrical and lights and now I'm wondering how to incorporate robotics. Sometimes it keeps me up at night, thinking about how to solve mechanical problems.

The worst cosplay. I don't care about the quality of the costume as long as you're having fun and you're not giving other people crap or lying, etc... So I guess I view cosplay elitists as the worst, the kinds that try to group people into "types of lesser."

My advice for choosing a character is choose one that you have always connected with. The best feeling is to fabricate some character whom you have identified with for a long time and you finally feel everything come to life, but just as you like it. It's the perfect satisfaction. And always give yourself way more time than you think you need. Deadlines are the enemy.

I am new too! I just figured this tip out yesterday:
when you finish a piece or get a piece in the mail or whatever, put it on for a while. My motivation went way up after a minute or two in the pieces I had just made.
