People often put facades irl, simply because they can't get away with being assholes to others.
I'm not saying that it's the rule, but online people tend to show sides of themselves they wouldn't even think about showing irl, so meeting them a couple of times isn't complete guarantee you /know/ them.

I have a friend who's met Yaya in person and thought she was a lovely person. Whenever someone mentions how they thought Yaya was a jerk in person, here she comes, repeating that same story of how Yaya said her cosplay was nice.
