A group of homestucks came into my job today. In new york not that much people cosplay outside of cons unless there off to a party or photoshoot. Any postive/negative storys involving cosplayers out of cons.

A few years ago when I was very into Homestuck, I saw a Gamzee cosplayer at a lantern festival. I'm so glad I stopped to say hello because he and the two girls he was with were very friendly and introduced me to the local Homestuck comm, which I previously had no idea existed, and which turned out to be amazing. Shortly after I met them, I moved to another country and I suddenly understood the stigma attached to Homestucks in North America, because all the nearby comms were embarrassingly awful. In the end, I got put off Homestuck altogether.

I miss my old comm though.

One and last time I've ever been to a cosplay meet up was a Naruto one from years back (only one because it just scared me from attending any more). It was held at a mall and people were obnoxiously loud, disturbing a nearby spa place. After we were told to move away, a couple of them started pretending to be part of Shikamaru's family by gnawing on fake mall plant leaves because "Nara means deer, lawl!". My 14yo self just left as the group dispersed into two groups (I assumed the crazies went elsewhere for "fun" and the others just wanted to chill with bubble tea or something). There was drama on the forum after this so there's that I guess, just talking about the misbehavior.

I always get pissed off when I see homestucks and/or tumblr cosplays at Renaissance Festivals. I mean yes, it's technically a place where you dress up, but that doesn't mean you can do homestuck.

I guess that seeing Goth/Lolita/Steampunk/Cosplay/Hot Topic losers in my town should be taken as a side effect of growth.

Des Moines Iowa Worlds Food Prize festival had the most socially retarded group to ever embarrass and darken the event. Basically a group of ugly weaboos kept talking broken Desu to all the Asian food booths harassed the Korean booths by loitering in front and smelling like horrible BO and making terrible North Korean jokes. To top it all off they kept booing at the dancers at the Salsa Club booth.

I now for a fact that they weren't highschoolers because one of them was a teller at a bank.

I've gone to a cosplay picnic in my town before, and there was a good mix of people - from a few middle-aged cosplayers to groups of screaming 14 year olds roleplaying their Hetalia cosplays.

In the end though, everyone kept the craziness confined to our corner of the park. There was a wedding nearby and everyone politely stayed away etc. I was impressed and happy to chill with everyone.

A few weeks ago I went to a local fall/harvest festival, and met a group I previously met at the picnic. They were doing a group cosplay together and just being cool and awesome.

When I was younger I used to enjoy watching youtube videos where people would cosplay whatever characters from a series, and just go out and do normal things like shop. Idk but I found some of them enjoyable and cute, it was as if I was watching a character I really like doing things they would actually do.
But those were the rare good few.
Good god I've seen a lot of bad ones, like...Naruto sleep over videos...what....
I think it's just an American thing because we're the cesspool for weaboos.
I don't really have a problem with tiny groups, like, 2-3 people when they're shooting a youtube video but a majority of them are dumb and just out of character.

Back in the early 2000's I went to the Risingsun.net photo shoots in. FL. Cosplayers were mostly collage aged, and well behaved. ( I was young for the group) We mostly met at parks, and then lunched together when the light was bad. Never had any problems, just very curious wait staff , the " it's not Halloween" jeers, and little kids that were drawn to anything that looked like a princess.

I had a former friend, who was in her 30's who tried to turn any outing(that wasn't just like, shopping) we did into a cosplay opportunity. At first I went along with it. Did one or two in costume, because hey, why not(it was stuff like mini golf) But then she kept doing it, again, and again. But then it just turned into her dressing up. The final straw was when I suggested a simple beach day since she lives like, 30 mins. From a beach, and she wanted us to drive 2 hours out of the way, to another one so she could go cosplaying in a pier because it has a boardwalk at the end with a Ferris wheel and so on. When I told her I didn't want to deal with cosplay, she told me "oh, you don't have to cosplay!"

Yeah, I don't think so.

I was drunk when I wrote that post. Let me explain better. I work as a nanny and one of the kids I work with takes ice skating lessons. While she was having her lesson, I noticed 3 Homestuck cosplayers start skating on the public session. I knew there was a John, a troll and some other person, I don't remember. Only the John could skate, so that one skated while the other two used a large, plastic seal-shaped carriage (it's what they let people rent for little kids who want to go on the ice but literally can't skate, that way they can be on the ice but they just sit on the back of the "seal") and rode around and fell all over the place looking like idiots. The kid I work with came up to me and asked me what the hell it was all about, since she knows I'm into cosplay (since she figure skates, she likes costumes). It was kind of hilarious.

Make more sense now?

i know my comm likes to have meetups during renaissance festivals sometimes (although they usually only get around ten to fifteen attendees, since most of them are too cheap to pay entrance fees)
there's a lot of homestuck medieval AUs, so that probably contributes to it. most of the god tiers have vaguely medieval names/backings (prince, knight, etc.), so when people do fancytier and shit like that it tends to go more in the medieval direction, which also adds to the reasons why they tend cosplay at ren fairs.

I'm not that person, but if it's from something that uses traditional Japanese clothing (ie. cosplaying someone from Inuyasha other than Kagome) would be okay, I think.
Now if you're cosplaying something like Miku Hatsune, try to stay away from that.
There's a Japanese festival in my area in the springtime, and I'm thinking of doing Rin's outfit from Senbonzakura. It's not really traditional, but it does have ties to that sort of thing, so I think it'd be fine.

No one's extremely strict about clothing choices at these sorts of things, but it is in bad taste to cosplay something like Homestuck and not even try to fit the theme of the festival.

I agree that the paint and horns and tee shirts aren't ok to wear, because they don't match the theme. But if the costume is period appropriate how does it not belong at an event where the only content guideline is "from x time period".

I'm genuinely curious where your line is being drawn for what's ok to wear to the Faire. Recreations of actual historical garments? Can I cosplay as Henry the 8th? What about a costume from Robin Hood? What about Ezio as mentioned or LotR? Can I be Scarlet Witch from that marvel mini set in the dark ages? Is everything ok as long as its not homestuck?

Different anon, but I'm not sure as to why you're getting so defensive about it.

There are plenty of people who get irritated seeing cosplayers at Ren Fests, including Links, Ezios, Hobbits, etc. I know one guy who rants about it every time. No one can stop you from cosplaying, but don't act all surprised when people find it annoying.

Besides, dressing up is not mandatory for Renaissance festivals.

I'd honestly find Homestuck fine at Ren Faire if you did a historically-accurate cosplay, forego the horns and grey paint, etc. Make it look like a normal Ren Faire outfit, but you and people in your fandom recognize that it's Homestuck, ya know?
I'm a Hetalia fan and we do this shit all the time. I don't expect people to ask what I'm cosplaying from or what Hetalia is if they see my pirate!England outfit, I just expect them to think, "Oh, it's pirate weekend and there's a pirate. Yeah not to sound like a sandy vag, I really just couldn't tell where the "it's not ok" line came in. The two pics posted looked like regular shitty fantasy Faire outfits that they sell at Faire for mundanes to dress up in. So it's ok to dress in period-ish wear unless you call it "medieval hamstuck" then it's not.

Ok not same anon but I have a point to make here. Cosplaying as a particular character can actually make things difficult for the people running the faire. Most have specific characters walking around, usually including Tudor royalty, legendary charcters (like RobinHood) and pop culture characters like Jack Sparrow or Ezio. that are a major part of the "show" and have set things they're supposed to be seen at and say. If you show up also cosplaying as them, can be recognized as them, or tell people thats who you are directly, it can cause issues either with the faire's script, or if you do something innapropriate the faire will be the one getting in trouble and may ban you or any similar costumes.

All this, plus you are NEVER the only one who decided to cosplay that character. By the time you've seen your 12th Tim the Enchanter, you're ready to binge drink honey mead and drown yourself in the moat.

The only way they would be disruptive is if they yelled or tried to talk to actors during a stage show. This has happened, but it usually with drunk fuckers in regular clothes, not anyone dressed up.

There is a girl at my school who cosplays the same character every day. I believe it's a character from Naruto, but having never watched/read it, I'm not 100% sure. But it definitely is cosplay. Thankfully she isn't too annoying, she just sort of leans against the outdoor portables and tries to look cool in between periods. But her friend wears cat ears to school a lot, cosplaying some character from Loveless? I read most of Loveless and I never saw anyone who looked like that. She's annoying. Doesn't understand school is not the time for cosplay and is generally obnoxious because "cosupray give me confidence, desu nyan~~" Emphasis on the "u".
None the less I am scared for my life that she will recognize my backpack and go full weeb. (my backpack is a slight nod to my fandom, so slight I've had people ask what brand my backpack was because they'd never seen the logo before. Hah.)
In short I've never met anyone terribly insulting, just mildly annoying.
Rural/Suburban New Yorker here, btw

Wings of Freedom. Picture relevant.
(Now that I think about it, not sure if it's a slight nod or a very visible and elaborate nod. Either way it's roomy and by far the best backpack I've had size-wise.)

>Be Disney employee a few years ago
>Family visiting me for my birthday
>We're at my favorite park Epcot
>Hetalia Day is happening
>Hetaliaboos all over world showcase
>Feel so much shame and second hand embarrassment

I was friends with one of the girls working in the Japan pavilion and she said she saw them there running around the shop. I should also mention that no one except for her really knew what cosplay is or gave the slightest shit about anime/otaku culture.
She said weeaboos would go into that store and scream or Japanophiles would come in and flirt with the girls working there.
Please, if you are visiting Epcot or Disneyworld do not do this.

>be at academically selective high school in australia (you have to pass a test to be accepted)
>this means that autists and asians are a majority in the student population
>compulsory uniforms
>every year we have a 'mufti day'
>basically we dont have classes that day and stalls are put up and we have a talent show and shit
>uniform is also not required that day
>everyone, fucking everyone takes that as an excuse to cosplay or just dress fucking retardedly
highlights include
>3 guys in 'we r leegun' masks trying to be 2spooky and following people around
>people with badly made cardboard cut-out rage faces
>some fuckhead in a cardboard box with green spraypaint and a minecraft creeper mask running around making the noise as loudly and as obnoxiously as he can
>a shitload of naruto cosplayers
>one of them was this fat bi bitch who thought she was hot shit and paraded around in a fucking shikimaru cosplay, with the fishnet shit
>if people werent in costume, most of them were in their typical autist uniform, jeans and running shoes, cargo shorts and ironic graphic tees

If there are official Faire members in a costume, though, they can't get pissed at a visitor for wearing the same costume. That's hypocritical and retarded.

But... Ren Faires sort of... ARE cons.

Just because you don't call it such doesn't mean it isn't.

It's a Renaissance Culture Convention, if you will.

Its not "you can't wear a costume only I can!", its that the character is on programs and part of shows and stuff, and they don't want other guests to think the non-staff in costume is the guy on the program. Its like how DisneyWorld doesn't let adults in costume in, just in case a kid thinks they're an employee and they do something stupid or offensive.

>New Japanese restaurant opens
>For once it isn't a fucking hibachi place
>Decide to go for lunch
>Nice place, very casual with good food
>Enter high school Naruto cosplayers
>Everyone gets very quiet
>Cosplayers sit down at a table
>They're very quiet
>Even their laughter is quiet
>No broken Japanese uttered at all
>Leave restaurant feeling lost and confused

I still don't understand what I experienced that day and I don't think I ever will.

I did a lot of his Orlando and Tampa shoots, too. Never anything crazy. Everyone who went was pretty chill. I miss those...

We try to get shoots together still and since it's the same crowd, they're still chill. It's nice.

Sad about his hands, though.

My boyfriend & I always end up playing "Spot the Weeaboo" whenever we visit EPCOT and get to the Japan pavilion.

Thankfully, we've never run into cosplayers, but I've seen photos, and that alone made me feel the secondhand embarrassment. I'm so sorry, anon.

Went to King Richard's Faire a couple of weekends ago....saw not only Homestuck but also neon furries.
