I feel as if bad fans fucking up is way too much of a frequent problem.
Though it is worth noting that all the "bad" fandoms also have some very distinguishable traits in the cosplays, for hetalians it is the Ahoges and flags, for Homestucks its the paint and horns, for SNK the uniform.
It really has a lot to do with the fact that they're groups who are more recognizeable even for people who are not involved.

I never actually noticed this until this post and then looked through my folder of Makaras. All the Kurloz artwork seems fine, but on a real person, I've only seen one or two who don't look somehow "wrong" especially around the eyes. I'm not sure what is wrong but it just doesn't look anything like the sprite despite pretty good shape mapping.

Does anybody know why it tends to look so much more unflattering than Gamzee makeup, or have any examples of how to do it right? I thought I just had overly high standards for Makaras.

The problem is that Hussie's art style is pretty inconsistent and I also think he just draws them all the same height.

It's one of those things where there's really nothing that says how tall they are for sure, and it's left to fan assumption based on their written descriptions and the few constants the art does have.

Due to his mutated muscular structure, it would make sense for Eq to be bigger than the other troll kids, I think, but I guess that could also just be my own preferences.

Yeah, California has a very large asian population and with it being closer to Japan the conventions on that side of the US are usually larger or have guests that are more prominent in the Japanese industry. I think there's even three Kinokuniya's in the state alone compared to there being only one on the east coast. Also having Hollywood their comic conventions have celebrities as well.

On the other side New York is the center for Marvel, DC, and other comic publishers. There are a lot of webcomic artists that live up here, and with cons like PAX it's also more videogame-oriented.

Southern US is where most of the anime dubbing studios/distributors are so those conventions usually have the American actors/actresses and such.

I have to say, the biggest problem I have with the homestuck fandom as far as cosplay goes is the people who get "recognized" for good cosplay. /cgl/ seems to be a good exception, but if any of you have ever gone to meetups/gatherings/even looked on tumblr you know what I mean.

I personally cosplay Dave, which is extremely common, I know. But to compensate for having such an easy to do cosplay, I make props that I consider to be fairly good. But when I go to gatherings or post pictures on tumblr, I hardly get any kind of "wow that's cool"
Which wouldn't bug me, if it weren't for the people who DO get recognition (females cosplaying guy characters, or just people who bitch about how bad they look)

Does anyone have any idea why this is, or is it just an unchangeable fact of cosplay?

Well, the first thing working against you is that your props aren't actually good if that's supposed to be a prime example of your work. Anyone can paint cardboard. I certainly wouldn't compliment that prop in the picture if I saw it at a con.

If you've lurked here for any time at all you'd know that the opinion of local meetups are total shit. They're a bunch of highschoolers who have no taste. Whining that you aren't popular enough in your local homestuck community is like crying that you haven't been crowned king of shit mountain yet.

At least from a distance the sword isn't too bad, pretty clean lines. But that awkward pvc frame that it's mounted to that seems to go around the body is really weird. Not to mention it looks like a frame rather than a natural way of attaching it to your body. Need to find a better way to integrate that into the costume. And the specibus made out of cardboard? C'mon Man. There are far better and sturdier materials than that out there. Maybe even straighten out the lines a little bit. It's a decent paint job, but some of the slightly crooked lines and edges are driving me nuts.

Make a clean, difficult costume. The end. And then make a bunch more. Just a big prop or a passable version of Dave isn't going to cut it. If you look at the list of BNFs and what their breakout costumes were, they're all something that's either high difficulty, or they made a clean version of an easier costume and the cosplayer has the bonus of being hot.
