I just looked over every dress on the Hot Topic website. I'm pretty sure most of the people who buy these dresses have no interest in ita culture at all. The dresses just seem like a hodgepodge of western punk and goth fashion. To be honest, the only problem I have with wearing lolita as a prom dress is that most of them aren't formal enough. Prom is supposed to be the night that you go all-out, so I think going for EGA would be better... but then I'm biased, I wore a corset and huge poofy petticoat skirt to my senior ball. I should have been more precise but it depends if it's just ita mess or full on furry costume or attention grabbing cosplay stuff.
If ita I don't really care, if it's a costume the person is clearly deranged to think it was a good idea at a funeral.
Idk maybe it's a cultural thing but at my grandfather funeral, one of my relative was wearing tacky clothes and bright make up colors. I think nobody really cares anymore, obviously if the person is dressed in a strange costume they might be kicked out by the family.
If someone want to dance on my relative's tombstones I won't be offended but that's just my opinion. As long as they don't kick the flowers or play with the stuff I'm ok with that, but I understand why other people would be offended obviously.

Same for the wedding, except if it's something intricate that will grab the attention from the bride, I wouldn't get upset over it.

I might be naive but I'm so tired of the way people treats anything remotely different here, that if I saw a huge ita I would be a bit happy to see people dressed as they want outside.

Western Canadians aren't that into Japanese fashion or cosplay, which is why you won't see many here. We do have a few, but most people like to lay low and don't want to start drama on something as vast as 4chan.
Honestly, there's a pretty big cultural divide between western and eastern Canadians; here on the west coast, people from out east are generally disliked simply because our personalities tend to clash.
