And those "lolita" dresses are very pricey if they're not on sale. They can easily buy second hand dress with that money. Hell, even some Taobao stores have nicely made lolita dress if you're on a budget.

People honestly do try and help them but they are so fucking stubborn it should be a crime. It's always "no, i'm pretty sure this is lolita, it said so on the hot topic site ^ _ ^" and they can't even take a single ounce of criticism. I just looked over every dress on the Hot Topic website. I'm pretty sure most of the people who buy these dresses have no interest in ita culture at all. The dresses just seem like a hodgepodge of western punk and goth fashion. You can't just tell them, hey your dress sucks, buy some genuine brand dresses instead, because that's not really the look their going for. Yes I'm aware of the girls that do try to buy this stuff and try to pass it off as ita, but I'm pretty sure they're in the minority. Gothic lolita isn't mainstream enough for the average person the know about it or for a retail store chain to try to cash in on it.

If you're getting posted in an ita thread, no one is really sitting there with helpful comments (it DOES happen sometimes yes), they are sitting there laughing their asses off at you. >My name is Brittany (booitsBrittany.tumblr.com) and I am definitely not your standard lolita. :)! As soon as I discovered lolita, I became completely inspired and I began to explore the fashion. I loved how there were so many substyles and sweet/OTT sweet quickly became my favorite. As I explored, I found ways to put my own spin on it. Some lolitas may find some of my outfits to be “costume-y” or something of the sort, but I am proud of my unique take on the lolita fashion.
I make all of my lolita style skirts and dresses, as well as most of my accessories. I’m a plus size girl so brand is a no go for me. For the most part, I don’t mind that because everything I wear is completely unique and one-of-a-kind! Of course I have those pieces that I covet but that only inspires me and pushes me to create something just as amazing.
Lolita has definitely changed me as a person, by opening doors and acting as a gateway to other fashions that also inspire me. I am my most confident when I’m decked out in my frills and I love how I feel while wearing the style. That’s what it’s all about. Don’t be afraid of what others (yes, even other lolitas) will think and just dress in a way that will make you feel confident and beautiful.
I am me; I am a loud and proud, plus size, over-the-top in every way lolita and no one is going to change that!
I hope that I can inspire at least one person to take the plunge into the frills. You won’t regret it! <3!

If that's meant to be a kimono, (barf) then the hair is too casual and speshul snowflakey.
If it's mean to be a bathrobe, it's too tryhard and over the top.

God help me I usually carry hair scissors in my bag, I don't know if I could hold myself back if I met some dumbass wearing a center-parted lolita wig in real life.

... "didn't have any other formal clothes" ??

You can get dress pants, dresses, etc for cheap at a lot of places. If you're dead broke you can find decent stuff at the Goodwill that isn't a costume. If you have zero money to your name, wearing the nicest jeans and tshirt you own is better than a cosplay. So give me a break.

I hate people who overdress/dress provocatively at formal occasions (funerals, weddings, etc). It's not about *you* it's about supporting somebody else. You dress respectfully out of respect of the occasion, at least that's what I was taught.

It's lazy. On wigs, they leave the fringe long so you can cut it and style it to the length appropriate for your forehead height and width. I was pretty uncomfortable with the notion too. I was actually asked to be a mentor, and I was like "lol I'm an ita, but sure why not, I guess if I can help people avoid the mistakes I made", but it was pretty shitty. Most of the people posting for advice are hypersensitive and won't actually take any of the advice you give them. The other mentors pretty much went out their way to tell me I was wrong and go back on my advice.
I got warned a few times about being "too blunt" and I wound up quitting because I didn't like the way the other mentors treated me, I wasn't cut out for it and I really do not have the patience to be super gentle and nice and hugboxy toward people doing retarded things like buying from Milanoo.

Not to mention, I'm pretty anxious about giving people advice in the first place because I don't even know all that much about lolita. I still don't coord up to a decent standard and I don't really think it's my place to instruct anybody else.

Honestly any event that isn't about you (someone elses wedding, funeral, potentially church, or any other event or pkace where you are a guest) s not an appropriate place unless you have gotten permission from the host. But events that arent about a specific person or group that you are not part of, go ahead. Like prom or out with friends (granted its ok with them) is fine. Always keep dress code in mind though. If your prom has a formalwear requirement and you absolutely MUST cosplay, make it formal! Get all fancy and shit. Miku wouldn't wear her standard clothes to a formal event, she's wear her fanciest dress.

as long as it wasn't shiro loli, I wouldn't object to it outright, but I'd rather they were wearing something classic or toned down rather than OTT sweet or gothic. If it was a nice formal co-ord (nothing costumey or ita about it) I'd actually be pleased.

>prom
To be honest, the only problem I have with wearing lolita as a prom dress is that most of them aren't formal enough. Prom is supposed to be the night that you go all-out, so I think going for EGA would be better... but then I'm biased, I wore a corset and huge poofy petticoat skirt to my senior ball. I got nothing but compliments for it too. Honestly, I don't understand why it's such a big deal to wear something a little different to prom. If that's your style, go for it

>a funeral
This is probably the only occasion I'd say it was outright unacceptable. Tone it right down and wear something subdued, out of respect

>church
I'm not sure if it's because my church is super laid-back, but I've worn plenty of loli-esque stuff to church (classic loli and frilly summer dresses with petticoats and all) and no one has ever cared, and I get complimented regularly by both the minister and the congregation. My parents don't have a problem with it either, the only thing they wouldn't let me wear to church are very short dresses or shorts. I can't see it being a huge problem if you want to wear your frills to church, but again I'd steer clear of OTT classic or gothic

Slightly OT but why do people say others have "no right to judge"? Of course we do; it's a basic human trait. Judging others is how we navigate our social world and draw conclusions about how we should and shouldn't interact with people. It's perfectly logical and even encourageable to negatively judge those who defy social rules, and similarly logical to want to share one's negative judgments with an audience who shares the same sentiment.

Pretty sure all Kuroneko's lolita-like outfits are cosplays.

I remember those old sanrio slipper accessory bags--that one looks like a bedazzled knock-off. That poor homely girl.

Really?! Even the pink bedroom and the bed covers...creepy. I do sort of want to know what happened to sniper.

The bride was probably just being nice. I'm sure you embarrassed her. If you aren't her go back to Facebook and lick her boots some more. She should have never worn that to a wedding.

Goth used to be back in the early 2000's, now its mostly sweet. Possibly because AP is the most popular right now.

>your wedding
I don't befriend weebs.
if a weeb shows up, they are definitely the gf of one of my dumbass guy friends. I'd scold that fucker for dating a weeb and wanting to stick his dick in crazy, and kick her out. if he protests, kick him out too. Its MY fucking wedding, it isn't about you and your retarded weeb needs

>prom
snicker at you behind your back.
because the person wearing that ita-mess or shitty cosplay will most likely grow out of their weeb stage, look back at the event, and cry over their own stupidity.
why wear lolita to prom? get fancy, its gonna be memorable.
>a funeral
take a photo of it, post it on /cgl/
cuss them out, never let them live it down, or anyone else involved. show some goddamn respect you weeaboo bastard.

>church
depends on the church. I think its fine for church holiday events.
I volunteer with kids at church and run the games booth in lolita, the kids love me and are pretty adorable.

>you spot weeb hambeasts out of their natural environment in a bar or a club. what do?
talk to them. every time they say "nya" I'd take a shot. I'd probably get alcohol poisoning

Everyone has already mentioned the other animes, but there is only one gothic character out of the seven (eight if you include Barasuishou) dolls in Rozen Maiden. Hina Ichigo and Kanaria are definitely inspired by sweet lolita. Do some research before you start spouting bullshit.

Iiraliina posted a pic of her prom dress and it was gorgeous. It doesn't really matter if it's gothic, classic or sweet if it's done right it will look better than the tacky prom dresses you see usually.

Am I the only one not caring about this kind of stuff ? Even for the wedding, I mean, if you really were to kick someone out it would create drama and you'd be pissed. Everyone would remember your special day with a negative note so bad move imo.

>Am I the only one not caring about this kind of stuff?
so, you're telling me if you saw some fucking sperg wearing a cosplay at a funeral, you'd just shrug it off?

what if they went as far to be one of those people that pose weebishly with gravestones?

I should have been more precise but it depends if it's just ita mess or full on furry costume or attention grabbing cosplay stuff.
If ita I don't really care, if it's a costume the person is clearly deranged to think it was a good idea at a funeral.
Idk maybe it's a cultural thing but at my grandfather funeral, one of my relative was wearing tacky clothes and bright make up colors. I think nobody really cares anymore, obviously if the person is dressed in a strange costume they might be kicked out by the family.
If someone want to dance on my relative's tombstones I won't be offended but that's just my opinion. As long as they don't kick the flowers or play with the stuff I'm ok with that, but I understand why other people would be offended obviously.

Same for the wedding, except if it's something intricate that will grab the attention from the bride, I wouldn't get upset over it.

I might be naive but I'm so tired of the way people treats anything remotely different here, that if I saw a huge ita I would be a bit happy to see people dressed as they want outside.

Western Canadians aren't that into Japanese fashion or cosplay, which is why you won't see many here. We do have a few, but most people like to lay low and don't want to start drama on something as vast as 4chan.
Honestly, there's a pretty big cultural divide between western and eastern Canadians; here on the west coast, people from out east are generally disliked simply because our personalities tend to clash.
