There's really no drama over it. The company had full rights to do that since it's their pattern.

It was a really neat idea though. All the fun possibilities if a huge group of them got together one year.

The problem is probably more spoonflower selling the design then the actual costume themselves. If Volpin had just given people the image file and they had done it themselves they might have gotten around it.

I am more curious as to who tipped off the company to begin with? I highly doubt some carpet designer searches the net all day seeing if someones stealing their design.

It's one thing to admit that you are being a douchebag, that takes some amount of courage, but it's another thing to admit why you are being a douchebag, especially if the person you are being a douche to is in the same general area.

No. His work is really impressive, so no one is going to blame you for wanting to look at it. And one less like on his page isn't going to make a bit of a difference, since there were over 40,000 people who like his page last time I checked.

They might, actually. And the thing about copyright is that you have to go after anyone using your design or you lose the rights to go after anyone going after your design. So, even though it's stupid to go after people making costumes out of it, if they don't, they won't have legal grounds to sue if another carpet company (or home dec company) were to use one of their designs down the line.

That's why you had the Pork Board going after Thinkgeek for calling a joke product (canned "unicorn meat") "the other white meat" - they have to go after anyone who uses that phrase, no matter how stupid or obviously joking it is, to protect their copyright.

Just for the record, IP lawyers have low to unpaid interns trawling through the web every day to look for copyright infringement on behalf of their clients, and their clients pay a monthly cover charge for it. Keep wondering why people think volpin is a douchebag. Granted I was only introduced to his work last year, but it seems from an outsiders pov that he is quite helpful and very fucking talented. More so, he puts up very detailed build logs that I know at the very least provides a starting point for other modellers. So far have yet to see any douchebaggery.
