Larp-fag here.
So what do you guys think about real armor vs fake /foam etc.) when it comes to cosplay? Making your own real armor is not that hard and by god it looks so much better. And you can fence in it using blunted weapons. Sound much better when hitting the other guy compared to plastic!

Tl;dr: Real or fake armor?

Decorative armor for cosplay =! functional armor
Fantasy costumes based on illustrations don't translate well into real life armor.

Also, what the hell? It isn't easy to make functional armor for anachronistic combat.

That's not sexy.

metal armor would look good if you knew how to make it right
but see, real armor is also really heavy, and people don't want to be walking around in it for hours in a crowded place

>> No.7105869

>>7105855
I find it just as comfy, if no even more so, than walking in a elaborate costume that might fall apart if anything unexpected happens.

OP do you happen to be Finnish?

>> No.7105919

Where is Gropey when you need him to talk about real smithing and accurate armor?

>> No.7105944

I LARP sometimes.

The armor some of the regulars have is pretty fucking pimp. There's a US Army combat engineer who kicks everyone's ass and sometimes uses a full metal armor set with tabard.

For plain old cosplay though, whatever goes. Personally I'd dig Elite Knight Armor from Dark Souls.

>> No.7105948

The other thing you have to think about is that cosplay is usually worn at a convention, and a lot of conventions can be a bit funny about actual metal armor. You have to check up what the rules are regarding it depending on the convention in question.

Never been a problem in Sweden! Guess the rules are different at bigger ones though.

>>7105855
Not heavy at all; sure you gotta sit down abit more but it works well.

>>7105674
Very easy. The armor up there is the first one me and my friend made. Took a few weeks. The results are not perfect but version 2.0 is looking better!

>> No.7106038

I get the ''Easier to bend and make intricate patters in''-argument but I quite often see american larpers wearing plain breastplates of foam and that just looks horrible.

>> No.7106092

>>7105855
a proper plate armor usually lighter then the chain equivalent which protects the same parts of your body.
For example my breastplate, backplate, gorget and helmet weights only 8 kg and it's reenactment compatible. If we put in the arms and the buffe than we are a little over 10 kg

>>7105667
OP, I see that your armor is very crude and don't fit that well because probably this is your first time trying to make an armor but... Why the fuck do you put the gorget above your breastplate?

>> No.7106099

>>7106092
It's a simple saftey measure; since we couldn't make a real gorget (2.0 will have it!) it sits over the breastplate so that a hit wont decapitate you.

>> No.7106107

>>7106099
well if you trim it it wouldn't decapitate you either. Or you can put some thick cloth at the back of it.

>> No.7106124

also, answering the original question: in cosplay I don't think it's that important if your armor is made of metal or plastic or foam or whatever, as long as it looks good.
Although I prefer armors that could actually withstand a little abuse

Yeah OP, lemme just make some daedric armor with no experience, no tools, and no workplace for working with metal. Should be easy and cheap.

Metal smiting seems like there's a steeper learning curve than when it comes to making fake armor out of whatever the fuck. Especially when it comes to decorative pieces, which is usually what makes up most fantasy armor.

IMO if you feel like you can do it, do it. But when it comes to fantasy armor, as long as you can make it look convincing, fake armor is great in my book.

What is yaya's armor made out of? I've just started a costume and realized that some of the bits are supposed to be armor, not a painted design. Yaya's has that nice balance of shiny/fantasy and realistic. What is it?

>Making your own real armor is not that hard and by god it looks so much better

I dunno man, the armor in OP looks pretty wonky and not that much better than some pieces made with eva foam. Why claim that it looks much better when you post shitty results?

The only time it's not gonna look shitty is when someone who has a lot of experience makes it. And that really goes for any way you go about making armor.
