I want to cosplay Batgirl (Bruce Timm's design), but I've never done a superhero costume before. If anyone knows any good tutorials for newbies on superhero costumes I'd be super grateful.
Also, I was thinking about getting the Ferrari in Pumpkin orange from Arda, any second opinions?

I think she's asking for a way to attach the tail without using the belt, since if the tail is attached to the belt but not the suit itself, it might end up out of place when she moves around.

>>7078686
Not exactly a solution, but however you decide to attach it, I'd suggest also making a hole in the belt piece for the tail to go through to add some extra stability and keep both the tail and belt place. This will also help cover where/how the tail is attached in case there's stitching or a safety pin you don't want to be seen. Hope this is at least a little helpful.

Search for 'onesie with feet' tutorials. Basically, you have to make the front leg longer to cover the top of your foot, extend the back leg down to your heel, and cut out an oval the size of your foot for the sole. Then you can attach gripper fabric or rubber soles to it. Good luck!

So I've decided to make this costume for a con in March, and I'm having trouble picking the right fabric. According to the little information I've found, my choices are wool or cotton. I've decided to go for a cotton twill for the black "overcoat" (still can't figure out the proper word for it as I don't know if she's Uzbek or what) instead of wool, seeing as wool will be hotter and more expensive. Might not be the most historically accurate, but I can't find much on what fabric, let alone what weave, was available to Central Asians in the 19th century.

However I don't want to use twill for her under-shirt/tunic (Kurta?), pants, and skirt. Is broadcloth acceptable? One cosplay blog said to go for kona cotton, but that's just broadcloth right? What do you guys normally use when you choose cotton fabric? Most stuff I've found that I've liked is mixed with polyester, and I want to avoid that.

Adding on to this, freezer paper is not going to work. Tights usually don't take well to the amount of heat necessary to adhere it - at the very least, it will weaken the fibers making them more susceptible to runs. Plus, ya know, ironing on your body...

Use a masking or painters tape to mark out the pattern, then blot the paint on. Let dry, take them off, clean the paint off your legs and put them on again. Fix the tape (or remove and freehand it now) and do another coat.

For pretty legs, wear dance tights after either shaving or using nair/veet. High quality ones, go to an actual dance shop. Put a dancers belt under your tights (not 100% sure on if it goes over or under? I feel like it'd be more comfortable under)

Period clothing tends to have a lot of texture to it. Weaves are looser and the fibers less processed than what we use today. The problem with kona and broadcloth is it tends to be thin, sundress cotton, not something with amazing flow and drape. Do you plan on embroidering it? Take into consideration how heavy the thread/trims are going to be. A lightweight fabric will show every inconsistency in tension and conform to the shape of the embroidery, while a heavier material will keep its own drape.

Personally, I would do linen for at least the underskirt, though you could certainly do the whole thing with it. Otherwise, a nice cotton will work for the red parts. Go to a fabric store and pet the materials to see what feels nice to you.

>> No.7083952

Huh I didn't think about the embroidery needs of the under-shirt/tunic (which will use red fabric.) There is less embroidery on that piece, but should I consider a heavier-weight fabric for the black coat? (Wool?) Unfortunately linen was not widely used by people in that area. Like I said my options are wool and cotton. Should I go for cotton twill for the red fabric as well?

I don't have much in my area that provides nicer fabrics. We have a joann, but I will only find the broadcloth and kona cotton in that color.

Using a heavier fabric for the overcoat would be best- a light-mid wool would be perfect and as long as it's at least 90% pure it will breathe and not roast you. http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/ has quite a selection usually and their wool is on sale right now too.

Yeah, it became clear pressing the iron onto my skin wouldn't work, heh. Cheers for the advice though anons. Was at a con over a weekend and all the weak Homuras were doing my nut in.
Also, when I've made stencils with freezer paper in the past I've normally just used acrylic paint and heat sealed it, would it be worth splashing out for fabric paint (considering I'll probably have to mix the colour myself) or would acrylic be alright?

What are some good Japanese online stores where I could shop around for a fall/winter coat? I love the winter clothes everyone is wearing in the last few chapters of Genshiken (Sue and Yoshitake and also Hato and Madarame, to be specific), so I decided to look at some Japanese brands, but I don't know where to start. I used to look at Marui One for that kind of thing but their online store is closed now and YesStyle doesn't have what I'm looking for.

If this question is better suited for /fa/, just send me on my way. I thought I would ask here first because I'm looking for Japanese stores specifically and I don't know how they react to that kind of thing.

I'm planning on cosplaying Vaan in his Tactics A2 Dissidia Alternate costume (center outfit). I have about a year to do this one, and I'd love for it to be my first 100% hand made cosplay. I have experience using Wonderflex to make armor and props and the like, and a little amount of hand sewing experience.

I would prefer to use a sewing machine this time around, however, I don't know where to start. Where do I find patterns/how do I modify them to fit my body? What sort of fabric would be good to make a popped collar like that? How do I even pants/the silver embroidery on them? What are some other quality wig sites aside from Arda-wigs (I checked there, and they didn't really have quite the right length/color) How should I tackle the vest? I'm pale and pasty, I don't tan well, but Vaan's a tan fellow. What tanning methods would you reccommend? Bottle tan? I'm a guy, however I am open to using make up and I definitely plan on it.

I have a year, so I have a lot of time to learn and practice and what not. I've got the will and capability of doing this, I just don't know where to begin as far as fabric work goes. Normally, I would just purchase a shirt and leather pants and modify them/add whatever details I need, but I do want to make this 100% from scratch for use in a competition.

I know it's a lot of questions but I want to do this justice and do it right. If anyone can point me in the right direction as far as any of those questions goes, it would be greatly appreciated.

But the wefting on the wig was showing so I had to take the smaller pony tail out on the wig, and i cant remake it because the wig is too thin. Posted in the fabric thread, but it doesn't hurt to get multiple opinions
I'm wondering what sort of fabric to use for the top for this cosplay.
The trousers will have a faint paisley pattern and the fabric has a slight sheen to it under certain lights.
The fabric I have for the hip scarf is plain but I'm going to be decorating it with a mixture of embroidery and trims.

For the top, I'm currently debating two options
1. Plain fabric with a little embroidery and use fancy fabric for the edging
2. Fancy fabric with plain fabric for the edging

I strongly suggest you pick up a sewing book (I always recommend the Reader's Digest New Complete guide) and take an introduction to sewing course. These will help with most of your questions. Joann has sewing classes which I assume are decent enough, but ones at colleges or local sewing stores tend to have more helpful instructors.

Patterns are found at sewing/craft stores - there's a big table somewhere with loads of books on them. Sit down and flip through, then find the matching packet in the drawers. Be careful to grab the correct size! It's usually in the upper right corner or on the flap of the packet. Fabric can be stiffened with interfacing to make things like the collar - get the fusible kind. If you have a steady hand, you can hand paint the silver with fabric paint. Epiccosplay has good wigs, amphigory isn't bad, and there are tons of good ebay/taobao sellers. There are patterns for vests - you just need to make the hem shorter. I wouldn't go out of your way to look too tan. If you've never used bottle tan before, you'll likely be streaky and uneven, if not outright orange, so just do a little contouring on your face.

Google will have many more detailed answers, though if there's something more specific you want to ask, go for it. But get a book, and take a class. It will help immensely.

I can't decide on what would look better for the Medic symbol on the side of the Medics arms.

Do you think I should purchases patches, or make some high quality iron-on transfers for a cleaner look?

Also, any suggestion on how to seal the transfers against potential damage? Cause all I got right now is clear nail polish and I'm not sure that the acetone in the polish would damage the ink in the transfers.

>> No.7086797

>>7086782
Ehh, I don't really care for transfers, as they tend to have a shiny look. If you did go that way though, there shouldn't be any need to seal them as the heat of the iron sets them. If the patches come in a size that's proportional to the rest of your costume, I'd go for that. They have the added benefit of looking good when roughed up and dirty.

>> No.7086877

>>7086797

I meant sealing it for the wash as I know transfers have a tendency to crack and degrade after a few washes, but I suppose I wouldn't actually be washing the coat that often anyway.

I still can't decide. You do raise valid points in favour of the patch, but when I look at the TF2 model the logo appears to be a completely flat texture. I'll go check out some official art.

>> No.7086902

>>7086877
You could try screen printing it on or using freezer paper stencils. Since it's only two colors and a basic design, it won't be very hard, just use two stencils and let the paint dry completely before you do the next one. Screen printing ink has a nicer texture than regular fabric paint, but either will work.

A friend asked me to alter a sweater for their cosplay. It's this disgusting shade of highlighter yellow, the kind that looks near green. She wants me to change the color. It's 50% cotton, 50% polyester, can it be dyed? Or if I left it out in the sun, would the highlighter yellow color at least fade into a less offensive-to-the- eye shade of yellow?

The sweater is ugly and the sleeves are huge. Not long, but really fat around the shoulder and armpit hole. The sweater is a small, but you could fit a pretty large thigh through that hole. I plan on altering this part as well, maybe just sewing them smaller, but it looks like it'll screw up the armpit area, since the sides don't have seams at all to follow along.

>> No.7088596

>>7088568
It can be dyed! I'd just boil it in RIT, but the colour will be lighter than it would normally be - only 50% of the fibres will take the dye properly. If you need a more even coverage, use iDye Poly, although be aware that polyester dye is quite vicious and will probably stain your boiling pan and dying utensils as well. The iDye site says you should mix both Poly and their Natural range of the same colour to dye a 50/50 cotton-poly blend, by the way.

Have you got enough room with the sides of the sweater to nip them in? You can unpick the sides, narrow the sleeves, and take in the sides of the sweater to fix the armpit problem. Look at some tutorials for refashioning plus-size tshirts into standard sizes, maybe. Good luck.

Avoid Dylon unless it's the only way you can get the colour you need. It's way more temperamental and less flexible than RIT, and the colour is weaker, takes longer to set and fades quickly. I used to use Dylon exclusively, but then I used RIT and I became a convert.

Third is the hair. I've gathered from other threads and the pastebin that a wig is ideal in every situation. I had to this point assumed I could simply color my hair appropriately, as it's already of fitting length, and it wouldn't take any styling. Is it still the rule to get a wig anyway?

Lastly would be the weapons. I can't do Ebony and Ivory, regrettably, as part of the costume. I'd focused more on finding a reasonable mock-up of Rebellion. Finding one of the DMC3 version in particular was difficult, and I found one, but it's inexpensive enough to worry me. The one I had found is here: http://www.swordskingdom.com/devil-may-cry-3-dante-s-rebellion-sword.html
Is this a place that is likely to burn me? I'd planned to make edits to the sheath to have it store on the back of the coat and I didn't plan to remove it from the sheath pretty much ever, so I'm not too worried about the stainless steel or any of that. I had just imagined Rebellion to be a part which consumed the vast majority of my resources.

Thank you for your time. Any other tips with assembling this are greatly appreciated.

I'm looking to put together a cosplay of DMC3 Dante for Halloween this year. It's relatively close, so I had planned on seeing what I could get that's ready-made, even if it's getting things in pieces parts, one by one. This is just for a few casual costume parties, and I wanted to ask the board for some advice on a few areas.

First, as a detailing question, I can get a replica of the amulet necklace Dante wears, but I've noticed in most of the art it's generally not featured. I had chalked it up as probably worth skipping over, but figured I'd ask if it'd be notably missing to an observer.

Second, naturally the most concerning piece is the coat. I've found several versions which are ready-made, and they all have extremely varying levels of quality and accuracy. From some searching I've found a fairly accurate one from JoyFay, which includes a lot of details on the jacket which I've found lacking from most other versions (the studding of the belt-vest, the belt being included, etc). It can be viewed here: http://www.joyfay.com/us/devil-may-cry-iii-3-dante-cosplay-costume-halloween-clothing.html?gclid=CJaChtGrurkCFZA-MgoddXoAVg
I have a suspicion that the photos make it look less cheaply made than it almost certainly is, though. But it's also apparently under some kind of special sale at the moment, plus I happen to live in Ohio, which is apparently relatively close to one of their warehouses. I'm assuming they'd probably make me pay full stop on shipping anyway, but hey. Ultimately, is there are a better source for this coat that I'm overlooking, given my timeframe and utter lack of skill at making this sort of thing myself? I'd just toss the pants, by the way. I already have a pair I own that's reasonably close.

Ah yes, it is me again. With a few more questions.

What would you call her skirt? Pleated? Flared? And how would I go about adding the white part underneath in your opinion? Is that just another skirt all together? I was thinking of just sewing up a skirt then adding a white lace underneath, but I wasn't sure.

I want it to kind of fly out like in the photo, but I don't want to look lumpy and just try and shove chiffon under there.

I'm planning to use a nice satin for her hair ties and choker, but I'm wondering if that will look good at all if the rest of the outfit isn't too shiny?

>> No.7089182

The white under would be another skirt completely, unless you sewed them together at the waistband. If you attach the white part to the edge of the black as lace, it'll fold how the black folds which isn't happening in the ref. The black skirt looks pleated to me.

Plaster bandages are a loosely woven fabric with the plaster components embedded in the fibers. You dip them in water to activate the reaction. The skin is covered in some sort of moisturizer like lotion or Vaseline because plaster absorbs water like crazy and will dry your skin out. They do not get hot, but rather clammy.

You can do it that way, but be careful not to get the excess liquid in you eyes or up you nose. If you plan on using it to make a cast, you have to seal it afterwaards. I think I used a polyurethane varnish when I worked with it. It takes at least four coats, and even then I've had release issues, so be thorough.

Ok, so I'm really trying to push myself and want to give this a go. I've never built something mascot-like before, but since this is such a simple shape (dome head!) I think I'll give it it a try.

What do people recommend for the internal structure of this? I've seen people make it with a full, solid dome for the head (I think by cloth mache-ing a pilates ball or something like that) and I've also seen it built of craft foam and no real solid stiff support (like here - http://atashi.wordpress.com/2012/08/04/persona-4-teddie-kuma-cosplay-progress/ )

What would be better? Or are there any other suggestions?

Beyond the head, should I be using some kind of internal structure to help the body keep its shape? Like boning in the seams, maybe? Also: should I be padding/stuffing it? Like, have the whole body costume be lined and put batting between the costume and lining?

I'm in the very early stages here and am I just trying to figure out how best to start.

Post a ref when you ask for advice.

Whether it's worth it or not depends on you. Can you sew at all? Do you have access to a machine? How neat do you want it to look? If you're reasonably skilled at sewing, it's a fairly standard jacket. Shouldn't be that hard to find a pattern for. A plain red leather jacket to mod might cost around the same amount, but you'd be able to make thee back panel look nicer. However, if you generally suck at craftsmanship and just want a nifty costume to wear around, then just buy the jacket. The store has good feedback.

And is mirror paint exactly as it sounds-- paint that's all reflective and stuff like a mirror?
Finally, how would I make it curved?

My friend is a big fan of One Piece and I agreed to do a cosplay with him this year for an annual con. I plan on doing Basil Hawkins (pic related) but i'm hitting some roadblocks. I plan on ordering (I am a cosplay-pleb) some major parts such as the coat and the waist tape. also, i'm trying to find some basic black boots that I can customize to look like what he's got going on. >> No.7099835

The best way I can think of to do this, without having weird folds or puckering is to actually start at the top half and bring the seam in by the smallest possible amount you can, and gradually make your seam allowance wider as you get to the lower half. If you start at the lower half though, and try this, then where you started bringing it it, there will be a noticeable fold.

>Can I trust an online cosplay site to make this?

Do your research before buying from any online merchant. read reviews, find others who bought from them and look at their pictures, ask about how long t takes them to compete the work, the kind of materials they use, etc. Like with any commissioner or contractor, you want to shop around and find what is best for you.

Any shoe store? Payless? If not, eBay, or just google black knee high boots.

I'm a very slim and androgynous guy and I do not know who to cosplay.

What's the best brand of body paint, more specifically black/white stuff that'd apply well to a face without looking like shit/cracking/etc?
I had heard some recommendations for ben nye, so I went and picked up some pic related. Problem is, it's beyond shit. When I move my face it tends to completely separate, revealing patches of skin, it blends awfully, gets completely destroyed at even the mention of water (even after sealant), and it drys/cracks a lot
I paid decent money for it so I figured it'd be somewhat good, but apparently not.
Also, what's the best method for covering the most of your eye/eyelids as possible with a color, to remove as much pink as possible? My first instinct would be eyeliner, but that seemed overly difficult for some parts (Then again, I'm not someone who usually wears makeup, so that would probably be it)

I learned this one from LARP, so take it as you will.
This is specifically for black, but what you do is you use black Mehron brand paint on your face, can be grease paint, can be the water based cake stuff, either way. I use the cake stuff personally. Do a couple coats over your whole face, spraying with barrier spray each time. If you don't feel like you can get the paint too close to your eyes, fill in close to your lashes with eyeliner.
THEN go get yourself makeup grade charcoal powder. Pat that shit all over your face. Barrier spray the crap out of it. The charcoal powder evens everything out to a smooth matte finish that looks realistically like skin, and isn't reflective so it doesn't look shiny in photos.

For whites I still recommend Mehron, but the there isn't white charcoal power. You may want to seal with finishing powder as well as barrier spray to get something like the matte effect.

I'm sorry your experience with Ben Nye was so bad, they're usually pretty good :(

If it is really just a simpler alteration like that, I would just take it to any of those quick fix/alteration places and have them do it. Denim itself isn't especially "difficult", but as it generally is a thicker fabric, it can be harder for some machines. But the same can be said of leather and vinyl. Since you have said you have no sewing experience, I am going to assume you don't have a machine of your own, and so you'll try to do it by hand. You should not do this. It will not look right.
Take it to an alterations place, and tell them what you need done.

Should I go to Ohayocon? I have some friends who want to go, there's an easy cosplay for me to execute, and it's not hard to get there, but the last time I went to see what it was like (which meant walking around outside the pay area for about an hour on the first day), I was hit with an ungodly wave of hideous odor that could only be described as basement sweat and shame. Has anyone else who has been to the event, perhaps multiple times, noticed such a thing, or was it a freak occurrence? My friends who were there with me (the same who want me to go this year) insist that they never noticed a thing, but I know for a fact that the most vocal advocate has no ability to detect bad smells at all. I don't really care about con events but I dig the camaraderie and the acting, so I don't exactly dislike cons, I just had a horrible experience with Ohayocon and don't know if I really want to pre-order a weekend pass just to end up in smell hell again.
