Crossdressing in Cosplay
i see women all the time doing this
but why is it that its that men dont do this as well ?

>> No.7083837

Easier to be a gender ambiguous male than to be a manly female.

>> No.7083843

for anime and manga at least, men are usually drawn more androgynously/feminine so women have it easier to get away with it.

is the basic answer, but I can also go into the stigma some men have with being feminine

These, also Crossdressing implies that the guys will have to use the same clothes as the female character, so for most of the people... that's embarrasing or ridiculous, in general, i don't care about CD, but i love genderbender (when they cosplay as a "How will these character look if he were a she, or viceversa"

>> No.7084643

Why is it common for women to wear pants, but not common for men to wear skirts?

>> No.7084645

>>7083835
because a lot of cosplays of males can get away being a bit effeminate

female characters need to look 100%. a lot of women are too masculine looking to cosplay a heap of female characters to actually look like an attractive female character anyway.

only so much makeup can do on a woman, even less on a man. hence drag queen theatrics.

>>7084643
Simple. Being feminine is largely conflated with being weak. It's *generally* more desirable to be seen as masculine instead of feminine, particularly for guys. And it's not because of some fictitious "no boyz allowed" club. It's like...a girl wearing pants is normal, because girls are supposed to want to be more like men. A guy wearing a skirt is taking a risk, because what man would want to be like a woman?

I would love to crossplay, I'm 6.3ft tall and beardy as hell though. I'd just end up being seen as a big creep for wearing girls clothing and not passing as a real female.

>> No.7084681

>>7084663
Yeah, that's why I said generally. And you never know until you try! You don't necessarily have to pass. Sure, some people might be assholes about it, but isn't that true of all cosplay in the end?

I find it strange that people would want to look like men rather than the fairer sex. As a guy I prefer to look like what I am attracted to, which is feminine in appearance.

I mean, it's less about looking like men and more about being perceived as masculine, which is (rightly or wrongly) coded as powerful.

And especially since there aren't really any masculine women characters to cosplay as. Tomboys don't count because that would just entail wearing normal mens attire.

The reason men dont crossplay anywhere near as much as women do is due to the social stigma attached with crossdressing

i.e Crossdressing =/= Homosexual

>> No.7084809

I don't know what you're talking about OP. There are much many male crossplayers who go as female characters.

That also goes without saying that there are lots of ironic crossplay that men do where they wear the outfit but don't bother to shave their legs or beards.

>> No.7084813

Because women are deluded into thinking that they look masculine or androgynous when they really look like little girls wearing their brother's clothes. Their "makeup techniques" don't make them look masculine at all, it makes them look like they smeared dirt on their faces prior to attending cons.

At least men are capable of realizing that most of us can't make convincing females. Women aren't as capable I guess.

>>7084663
I don't even want to crossplay. I just want to be able to wear skirts out in public cause they are more comfortable than pants.

>> No.7084863

>>7084656
Fun fact, males used to wear skirts until they made pants in order to easily ride horses.

>> No.7084866

Women are much more judgemental than men.

If you see a chick cosplaying as a dude, you'd still try to hit that if she was cute. If a girl sees a guy dressed as Yuna or some shit, there's no way she's going to go for that.

I think there are a couple of reasons.
Social stigma might just be one of them- while a girl with short hair and in jeans is rarely something people might be concerned about, a boy in a skirt still seems socially unaccepteable to many. There are stories told of females disguising as males and it's heroic tales, like Jeanne D'Arc, Mulan or 'August Renz', women that take on the responsibilities of men and fight in wars. It is seen as strength they take on, however for a man it is often seen as a weakness or something comical to dress up as a female in most cultures.
So much for the societal aspect.

However, in Manga and Anime, the male beauty ideal of androgyny persists. It is much easier for females to match said effeminated features than for men to turn into convincing moe girls.

And I guess that is not even half the story... I think the networking of crossplaying females is also much stronger than that of crossplaying males.

>> No.7085010

>>7084963
The social stigma is there because people are judgmental. If you aren't, then thats great, really, I wish there were more like you.

I plan to crossplay in a couple days. As Arche from Fortune Summoners. I'll keep a three-weeks-old beard.

>> No.7085027

I truly haven't seen a crossdressing girl that gave the impression of a guy, though I've seen a couple of guides that use the magic make up to amplify your masculinity. The opposite convinced me more, actually, when I saw two supposed guys cosplay based on Free!'s ED, only to find the two to be girls. The headgear covers enough enough of the head so I couldn't make out the face. Taliban tier camouflage.
The few women who build muscles in similar rates as men would do a better job at cosplaying muscular characters, as one would expect, it's just that I haven't ever seen that happen. If that was ever to happen, I wouldn't mind the face, so long the terrifying presence of strong muscles remains.

Are you really required to make a convincing female as a guy? Going the exact opposite way should be way more successful. Humor your crowd with absurd. If you can keep the act, you'll end up as a comedian rather than a creep.
I think the issue comes down to "ew 2gay4me..", which can be easily solved if you cosplay in a group.

>but why is it that its that men dont do this as well ?

Because masculine features are a physical divergence from feminine/childish features, and also because anime character designs favor feminine/childish features, and also because female-targeted fiction is a ghetto, and also because playing dressup is viewed as a girl hobby to begin with, making the male participants both less numerous and less adventurous, etc. etc. et fucking cetera.

Congratulations on taking an extremely complicated question and then asking it in such a grammatically ambiguous fashion that it doubles the number of answers.
