Anyone else going to this beast? After missing out on Fanime and SDCC, I need my con fix.
Will it be better than Winter Sac? Will the raves last longer than 25 minutes? Will there be another legion of Homestucks everywhere? Discuss.

>> No.6987455

I'll probably go to this as well.

What went wrong with Winter Sac? I wasn't there.

Since it was a transition to a new convention hall things went wrong here and there. They gave us a huge room for the masquerade, but the tiniest pop up stage they had. Panels were put in the wrong rooms for their size, like there was a doll panel and a homestuck panel and they put homestuck in the tiniest room available while the doll panel had only about 6 people in a huge room. The security staff was rude and didn't no where stuff was, the same old same old.

Homestuckers have received warnings on the forms that they are only allowed to have the 1 designated meet up at this con or they will not be able to have enough, the same goes for Pony and other large fandoms- no mini meets. Also the person who ran the last meet was quiet, had a hard time having people get ready for pictures, and left half way through the meet. I'm gonna be in charge of this one again for my final time (I did the last summer one as the Ferferi that went fairly well) The meet is Friday afternoon, so a lot of the homestuck will be over by Saturday when more people are at the con.

I'll be God tier Roxy Friday, Mabel and Eep on Saturday, and Bakura (rule 63) on Sunday.

They asked what happened at the last con, so I filled them in with what I remember from the threads about it way back in winter. I'm not complaining-too many of the younger homestucks went crazy last con so I'm fine with the crack down on us. I had fuck with my friends and the option of different places to hang out with friends in downtown sac is nice. There is more food options and places to drink.

Winter's was horrible because of the new setting. Skits that didn't fit were thrown in because they only had 10 of the acts that signed up show up. The stage was super small and just one of those pop up ones. It was really sad too because for once they had a ton of seating set up, but the way they had it set up made it almost impossible to see the stage if you weren't in the front 5 rows. The line set up was a huge improvement though. They had 2 different lines in a connecting room, so they weren't in anyone's way and you could sit down to wait till it started moving. The only highlight of the masquerade last winter was the awesome Mobile Suit and the Karaoke winners singing.
Summer usually has better skits because it's not competing with ALA.

Did anyone check out Cafe Hoshi last time? I wanted to know how their new food set up is before I order a ticket. It's been fun the 2 times I went, but kinda want to at least know the food situation before hand (I was at the VIP fuck over last winter & summer)

The Masquerade has been going steadily downhill since Katie has been tightening the rules for entry. Skits have to have an Anime theme and if they do manage to shoehorn in some western references, their score suffers.

She's also notorious for playing favorites, like last year when she allowed a My Little Pony group made up of people she knows personally to go past their time limit because they told her they didn't know how to put anime references in. They did their skit exactly as they planned, but with some sailor moon poses, then they won best in show.

>> No.7005794

>>7005484
Yeah that bothered me a lot! I remember there was another pony group that year with two cute girls who were a lot younger than the pony group who won, but they managed to incorporate an "anime" theme into their skit and still make the time limit.

Also anyone who checks the forms could see the posts about the deadline drawing near for gatherings since you are first supose to make a thread on the forms about the gathering before applying.

Hi folks. I was the Pyro from that TF2 skit and to be 100% completely honest, I don't harbor any ill will against the con or Katie. I was upset when it first happened of course, but in retrospect it's really all for fun. I mean prizes were like a t-shirt and some chinese gummy cheezburgers.

What IS cool is that they've apparently altered the rules just for troublemakers like me!

>SacAnime is a themed convention. This is reflected in the events we offer, panels, guests, and even the types of items our vendors have for sale. The theme of SacAnime is: “A Celebration of Asian Media and Popular Culture.” And as such, all official programming (including the Masquerade) adheres to this theme. However, the definition of this theme is quite broad, and as Asian pop culture has become more and more popular in the U.S., more domestic sources are attempting to grab a piece of the action. For fans, this means it’s harder to tell what is and isn’t theme appropriate, and I find myself having to play referee in disputes between cosplay groups about whether or not they (or other groups) should be allowed to enter the competition.
...
>“What if my neither my costume nor skit fit into these guidelines?”

>This Summer, we are adding an “Exhibition” category to the show. This is for groups or individuals who do not wish to be judged for Craftsmanship or Presentation, but still want to show off their costumes or skits on stage. Exhibition entries still follow all of the same General Rules as Competitive entries. Exhibition entries ARE eligible for Judges Awards.

If memory serves, the stop you want is 11th & K-street. It's just after either the "Saint Rose" stop or the "9th & K" stop if you're coming from the South.

If you're looking for more "personal" directions, the SACRT site has an online trip planner where you can plug in where you're coming from and what stops are going to be the easiest for you to get to

Therein lies the problem. You can hate on homestuckers all you want, but Sacramento has a relatively large and vocal Homestuck community. They have gatherings outside of cons, sure, but cons are easily their biggest meeting points. Why would the two local cons make efforts to alienate that population? Not saying that homestuck fans are completely faultless, but it doesn't seem like a smart move on the cons' part.

>> No.7015555

>>7015526
They've done nothing to alienate them specifically. Every fandom has to adhere to the same standards because of the shitty behavior of several asshole homestuck people back in 2012.

It wasn't JUST the Homestuck people that were blocking aisles and generally making the crowd a shitstorm to try and move through, but the majority of it was their impropmptu group shots in the hallways. That, combined with their unsealed grey body paint and big, pointy-ass horns made it that much worse, so yes, I think I will cling to the idea that I don't like them much

Let's hope this time around, though, the runners of Sac manage not to cram the ball into a stuffy space and attempt to make it a rave.

>Can only hold gatherings once a day and in certain locations
>All gatherings must be approved or else staff will break them up

Does any other con do this? Seems stupid as fuck to be so anal about cosplay gatherings. How the hell do the define a gathering? What I a bunch of cosplayers from the same series just wanna hang out?

>> No.7016212

I live in Sacramento and I've been wondering if I should go to this but I really don't know what I'd do there. I like anime casually (maybe watch around 6 series a year) but that's about it. I don't care much about cosplay (honestly think a lot of it is bad), voice actors/actresses, panels, etc.

I don't have friends to begin with, much less any that are interested in anime, so that's out of the equation. I don't own much anime merchandise at all, mostly because it costs too much and I only ever hear bad things about vendor prices at cons, so that's probably not appealing.

Yeah, I dunno, I feel like I wanna go just to be a little more "social", but I will probably be one of the least uninterested fans to go.

>> No.7016296

>>7016212
Truth be told I'm not much of an Anime fan either. That's why I cosplay as more western stuff than anything (TF2, Wreck-It Ralph, Zoidberg.)

Go check it out for free at first. A lot of the photo Ops take place outside the areas where you need a pass to get into, so take an hour or more and just wander, take some pictures, give some cosplayers a short, sincere compliment if you think something they made is neat. That way, if people seem friendly and welcoming enough, you can choose to buy a pass to check out the dealer's room or watch the masquerade or meet a voice actor or two (The voice actor for Mario and the one for the personality cores from Portal 2 will be there, among many others. I had to do a bit of research on who's going to be there and what they've done, but the results really surprised me)

And by the way, >>7015898 is exaggerating quite a bit. While it's true that Homestuck is really popular right now, they are nowhere near almost half of the attendees. And with all the changes made and the new venue, it's actually really improved in just about every way.

The gathering rules do seem a little rigid, but it's not like they limit where/when you can have them. You just need to let them know first so you don't clash with someone else's planned gathering or block a main thoroughfare. In fact, once you register your time and place, they actually put it in the printed program and all the posted notices around the con so LOTS more people will find out about it, which ends up creating a bigger, more comprehensive gathering overall.

>> No.7016299

>>7016158
Can we really blame the convention center's rules? This is straight from their forums:

>The reason for this is that the convention center is not an "open" venue like we're used to, and they are concerned not only for the safety of our attendees, but also for the venue itself. In order to be allowed to have gatherings at the convention center, they must all now occur in the same location. (Although it is a large enough area that we can do more than one gathering there at the same time.) To keep things organized and avoid overlap, I need all of you guys to work with me. It took a lot of convincing to get the convention center to agree to this in the first place, so lets make a good impression!

>> No.7016572

>>7016299

Exactly. Sacramento is NOT used to full geek-cons like this. You've got mostly all businesses catering to state-worker types surrounding the convention center. We have to give them at least a few years to make a decent impression before they may start easing up on this. and the extra space is really really worth it in my opinion. At least we're not walking through those tinyass hotel lobby hallways.

Yeah, the Convention Center has solved a lot of those problems. In January the crowd seemed much older (Or at least more mature) and while there are a few cliques that walk around together (usually in matching-themed costumes) everyone I encountered was super friendly and receptive. Even the vendors in the Dealer's Halls seemed to be having a better time with all the extra elbow room.
Also, the fact that the hotels for attendees are separate from the con itself has to have relieved a bunch of stress on the hotel employees. I worked at hotel front desks for about 7 years and I guarantee you that if HALF the shit I saw some of the old attendees pulling happened on my shift, I would do things that would require an HR meeting. I remember one year some doofus in an Akatsuki robe somehow managed to get up on the roof of the building where they had the Artist Alley & Game Rooms.
The staff of the Raddisson had to be some seriously zen-like dudes to allow the con back after that sort of thing, but the Convention Center just feels so much more like where SacAnime belongs.

When the Hyatt held Kintoki-Con in 2011, the hotel's staff were often clashing with the convention staff. But what really got the hotel in hot water was when a Guest of Honor was serving minors beer during an event. That's why Kintoki-Con had a hard time finding space in 2012 and then finally the Holiday Inn took them in for 2013.

The Hyatt did not host any room blocks at SacAnime Winter because of what happened at Kintoki-Con. I guess they finally saw the brighter side of conventions and the potential profits (the area is expected to bring in more than a million dollars in revenue), so they opened up their hotel for Sac Summer.

Problems with this plan are:
>If I leave my car at the train station and I end up staying out after like 10:00pm, the trains won't be running anymore, so bigass cab fare + whatever extra parking fees would slap my ass for leaving it there after closing time.
>I could just get a ride to the con itself from my folks with my brother, but then I'd also have to ask them to come get him when it was time to go a-drinkin' and then come all the way back when it was time to scoop my inebriated, Wreck-It Ralph-lookin ass up at the end of the night. I was originally thinking of just grabbing some flip-flops on the cheap to kick off for photo shoots, but I'm quickly learning that size 16 Flip-Flops are either nonexistant or will cost about the same as a regular pair of shoes, which I can't afford at the moment.

Anyone have any compromises to toss into the think tank?

>> No.7056759

>>7056743
How about making your own flipflops? And are you sure you can't find any? I think flip flop kind of sell in small, med, large, so if you're googling for a specific size, that might be why you're getting expensive specialty ones. Did you walk around Walmart? At this time of year they should be going pretty cheap

The only reason we have that rule is from the little asshats of last time who couldn't do the Saturday meet up- but still could do Friday and Sunday so go figure. They invaded the vocaloid gathering as well. Ponys also got in trouble for unofficial gatherings and I think a few others like Dr Who or that Sherlock dick who posed like they were gonna jump. A lot of things got in trouble, but it was easier to call homestuck out as a whole.
Oh well after the meet up Friday I'm done with them and cosplay from it so yay to that.
