What I don't get is why someone always comes into here and tries to call /cgl/ hypocrites when what's being complained about is something that, to a lot of people, is a legitimate thing to be upset about. Once again, its like no one is allowed to feel annoyed by bitches and whores who steal and lie. If you are, you must be jealous and fat.

This sort of Internet logic is getting old. So, when is someone going to create an argument that makes actual sense? I'm tired of seeing posts where people seem surprised and genuinely bothered that other people get bothered by shit. If it doesn't bug you, then why are you here? You obviously don't see eye to eye on the issue, so it defeats the point of posting to begin with.

>> No.7047583

Sounds like they should've chosen a different name for the show. Things like OPs image could have been avoided because now I think people dislike the show (among many many other reasons) because most of what they do isn't charitiable.

I love that /cgl/ is hypocritical, because /cgl/ as a whole IS hypocritical and has always been.

What is the legitimate thing to be upset about? It's obviously staged and scripted, it's not like they did a good job of acting. Is it because some people will think cosplayers are WEIRD? Because newsflash, the hobby IS weird. Is it because cosplayers are being represented as bitches? CGL is a kingdom of bitches, which is why people are so heavily invested in "outing" the show as stupid and fake but can't be bothered to do so under their tumblr name. Cudos to Tenleid for having balls!

You're calling them bitches and whores, that is already being bitchy yourself. You're just as much a bitch, but you obviously feel justified in being mad.

I don't know the cosplayers in the show, I don't cosplay in the states, I don't believe the hobby is going to be destroyed by a television show. So yeah, it doesn't bug me but I like to read through people's opinions on the show, laugh at the drama /cgl/ creates, laugh at the show itself, and I do find that the costumes that are showcased on the show are older than they are shown to be.

Just because I don't agree with your opinion, doesn't make any of my opinions invalid. If you just want to be validated for your anger, go post on facebook.

Here's the difference.

/cgl/ does not want or desire to be seen as the go to source or authority of all things cosplay related nor does it even consider itself the proper community to represent what cosplay is. Heroes of Cosplay is a show with pretensions of showing the world how cosplayers are not fuckups when in reality it just shows us a petty people.

/cgl/ is a community that is bad and we acknowledge it. Cosplay heroes is tryingto be the big hero of cosplay but is failing horribly.

First off, I don't use Facebook. I don't have one, because I'm not interested in the site. Sorry, never have been. Not my thing.

Second, of course I'm bitchy about this. Where was I trying to hide that or say that I wasn't? Obviously if someone is irate, they're bitchy. Do you not understand how anger or frustration works?

I get that it's a weird hobby to some, but guess what? This show doesn't portray it in a better light. Why is it so wrong that a group of people with an innocent hobby don't want to be represented by people who are not good people? Why is it so wrong that people feel that this show does not properly showcase the community? It's suddenly wrong to not enjoy someone making you out to look like a jackass?

Obviously, if someone is going to do what these people have done, people won't be happy. People don't like to be misrepresented. People don't like to be shit upon. And, while within your own conscience you may know that you're not seeking out to be la most famousness cosplayer LIEK evur, it doesn't help when your community and those like you are painted in that light. It's offensive. And, there are plenty of ignorant masses who will treat you like shit and ignore your, "Wait, seriously, I'm not like those girls. Hear me out." It's still frustrating to have to deal with, especially for some of us who already deal with bullshit.

This board may have its catty members. It has its bitches. I'm not denying this. I've been insulted here before, but I don't blame the board as a whole. Multiple people post here, from many places. And, this board doesn't try to act like its the go to authority on cosplay. It doesn't dub itself a deity or goddess, nor claim to want for change and peace amongst its kind yet do jack shit about it. To have someone do that and then claim to be an ambassador for an entire community of people which grows everyday, is understandably annoying.

>> No.7047653

>>7047609
Who cares if they make asses of themselves on tv? It mostly makes the people on the show look bad. Even if it does make other cosplayers look bad, who cares? Are your friends suddenly going to believe the television and turn on you? Are you unable to explain that the show isn't an accurate representation? I would hope that people aren't applying to jobs and saying they are a "cosplayer" first and foremost, so it's not really going to cause people to judge you before meeting you.

Will digging up photos proving the show is faked cause it to get cancelled? Unlikely. That petition that is floating around has more of a chance. Nothing here is particularly productive in changing or ending the show, it's just venting.

I do know that continued discussions about the show and telling people not to watch the show will encourage more people to watch it. Tons of people are going to watch the second episode, not just because they like the show but because they want to keep up with the drama. Infamy is just as good as fame, in the sense that they will get viewers.

You're totally fine to hate the show, I respect everyone's personal opinions on it. I'm not calling any one person hypocritical, I called the board as a whole hypocritical. I find it amusing.

People are mad about it showing the show as full of drama and bitchyness. The community responds by sending hate mail, calling the people on the show bitches and digging up pictures to prove that the show is scripted. Then going as far as to post the pictures to tumblr in the hopes that the people on the show find it and get mad about it.

I just think it is hilarious, ironic and beautiful.

>> No.7047699

The main thing that bothers me is that I see people defending the show by saying, "But this is what competitive cosplay is really like!"

And it's really not. At least, not unless you make it that way.
I've been in a lot of contests and I always end up making friends with the other contestants or having a lot of fun, sharing different techniques in the green-room, etc.
I'm not saying that people like these girls don't exist, however. For every contest I've ever been in, there are a small few people who enter like they know they're going to win, throw tantrums when they lose, treat everyone else as though they were beneath them, etc. And those are exactly the type of people they've featured to be on the show.

I can assure you there is no 'community' of seagulls who get together and coordinate how much hate mail they want to throw at Yaya on a given day. To imply there's some kind of cgl group behind this hate mail stuff is bullshit when it's only the acts of random people who actually go forward and do anything. If I as someone from cgl decides to laugh and make a comment at it, it doesn't mean I'm participating in any of this.
It takes me no amount of effort to type a passing comment on the drama for five minutes and hit the submit button.

I'm personally not mad by any of this. I know it's scripted, reality television. But hey, if other people want to have a discussion about it then why not say my two cents? I won't lose sleep and neither with Yaya.

Holy shit. Can I just not like a shitty reality tv show for it's bad script, bad information, and bad portrayal of cosplayers without being told I somehow mean for normalfags to continue this 'perception' that cosplayers are shitty basement dwellers or children? Because I believe there's something better to offer other than the sweaty insoles of Yaya's cleavage and her crazy twats for castmates?

Technically, that could be deemed relevant, though. It says a lot about someone if they're willing to get that sort of surgery for cosplaying. It says even more when they get them obviously seeking attention, make costumes centered around them, bitch about the attention, but then go on a TV show and claim to love attention. It's a back and forth of bullshit that would confuse and annoy plenty. She doesn't want them focused upon? Then, she shouldn't have gotten them. Nobody forced her to. Nobody forced her to purposefully create costumes that don't even have cleavage in order to show them off, either.

Yet she does it. She made her bed and now she needs to sleep in it.

I'm tired of people calling out on me for having problems with women baring their skin which is not true since I don't mind people cosplaying skimpy outfits just as long as they don't overly slutify the character who isn't suppose to wear anything skimpy. It's never been about her not being permitted to show herself off. Had she actually been born large breasted and chose not to get a reduction due to lack of funds or fear of going under the knife, I could understand and completely sympathize, even if I think that the woman is a bitch. My mother had implants and they fucked up; Ruined a nerve and her one nipple was always hard. She had winking boobs. I didn't learn what sort of risks come with that surgery until she told me that hers were fake. I also didn't know that they're a long term investment; Its not just one and done. You have to keep going back to get them fixed as you age, because they WILL shift and move and you'll look retarded.

But, here's the thing; The surgery is elective. Cosmetic. Not medically necessary. It's not needed in order for you to survive. She got it done for attention and shows them off, but then complains. Well, what were you expecting, bitch? You could have stayed normal looking, but you chose not to. You're the one who blew the time and money to get these and show them off. You'd be fucking complaining if you got them and nobody paid attention. So, which is it? Do you want attention or don't you?

All I know is pretty much any reality-based show is chopped up to mincemeat and reassembled to however the editors please to make almost any scenario they want. This can be easily done with using reactions faces from different parts of the scene, adding music stings to make something seem more dramatic, goofy, awkward, whatever. I just feel bad that the girls are going ot get even more scrutiny over things that aren't even their fault when the internet has already torn them up for super pointless things like having an opinion on anything or wearing the wrong makeup with a costume. There's a degree of editing involved, but a lot of what's been going on with this show is not "Surprise! You got a bad edit!" it's the producers having them fake shit.

>'omg YAYA'S judging??'
>acting like they aren't friends with her
>specifically saying that the costume needs to be done in time for WW when it was already finished and premiered for Katsucon
>Lulu costume isn't finished! zomg!

The real heroes of cosplay are the people who will never get media coverage. They don't earn any profits from cosplaying. They visit sick kids in the hospital in costumes to brighten up their day. That to me is heroes of cosplay. They might not have great photography, might not have detailed costumes, but they are heroes to me.

I'm just an outsider to the cosplay community, so my opinion doesn't mean anything.

They didn't really seem to care or even bother to ask what the show entailed. Most, if not all of them looked at it as a way to get popularity, even if that meant a shitload of misconceptions about cosplay as a whole. Maybe they thought the show wouldn't be as scripted and as inaccurate, but that doesn't change the fact they signed a contract with the channel because they knew that it'd give them popularity. However I'll give you the fact that maybe they weren't expecting such reaction from the community.

This show isn't made for cosplayers to watch. IF you are a cosplayer and watch this you would probably fell like a dumb shit or "wtf did I see?"
Why? Because there is no content in it, it's pretty empty (1st episode only though)

Also if people will judge cosplayers based on the cast about 9 10 people? Then they are stupid as well... It's like watching jersey shore and sudenly everbody who goes to night clubs are pimps and whore. Get over yourself.
People will judge you if you give them reasons for it.

PLUS if you're not a cosplayer or community envolved you won't have that much of a bad time watching it since I showed it to friends and boyfriend and they were like "what of it? It's nothing special, just a show."
If you're so worried with outsiders you are on the wrong track.

Mostly people involved and cosplayers are mucking a fuss of it, out of nothing, leave the damn show you are the ones giving it importance and feeding the trolling. It's not with the show they'll get famous but thanks to the shitstorm that is happening.

Of course it isn't. I think everyone in here knows it's not meant to be for cosplayers; the reason they're getting upset is because it portrays cosplay inaccurately. They wouldn't give a shit if Yaya or anyone from the cast appeared as long as they portrayed what cosplay is truly about.

>Also if people will judge cosplayers based on the cast about 9 10 people? Then they are stupid as well... It's like watching jersey shore and sudenly everbody who goes to night clubs are pimps and whore. Get over yourself.

It's a television show. Television caters to masses. How many people have gotten misconceptions about the show Big Fat Gypsy Weddings? You're underestimating the power of tv shows, especially "reality" shows.

>PLUS if you're not a cosplayer or community envolved you won't have that much of a bad time watching it since I showed it to friends and boyfriend and they were like "what of it? It's nothing special, just a show."

>If you're so worried with outsiders you are on the wrong track.

I'm an outsider yet have friends who cosplay and I still saw what was wrong with the show.
I don't even cosplay, wouldn't even think of doing it, yet I fucking knew it was bullshit since the beginning and completely understand why people are upset.

>Mostly people involved and cosplayers are mucking a fuss of it, out of nothing, leave the damn show you are the ones giving it importance and feeding the trolling. It's not with the show they'll get famous but thanks to the shitstorm that is happening.

Well uh I mean if someone made a tv show out of a hobby of mine and portrayed it inaccurately, and on top of everything if I saw outsiders believing what the show's saying, you better bet I'm gonna be upset.

From upcoming episodes:

The producers asked someone to tell a contestant she had camel toe and had her a pad. The producers made it appear like a specific group of people were insulting one of the contestants when in reality the insult came from a random person in a crowd.

In addition to that, people dislike it when they are lied to. Especially when the contestants ignore those lies or delete comments/block people who point out: "You premiered this at ____. How can you say it's not done?" or "You guys know each other. Why are you acting like you don't?" These aren't some random obscure people, it's people that have made a name by attention whoring and are now upset because people know enough about them to point out the bullshit.

And, once again, I find myself wishing that I had saved that screenshot that someone took of Yaya's tweet where she stated that the community needs to come together and not be divided. So, in it's place, I'm just going to leave this here:

http://geekspodcast.com/2013/03/06/how-cosplay-elitism-hurts-the-community/

This article and the woman herself are saturated in hypocrisy. If indeed the show wasn't created for the enjoyment of cosplayers and instead to inaccurately portray them, then what is the point of claiming that we as cosplayers need to band together in this kumbaya sewing circle bullshit? "Yes, hi, I'm a person in this community and I consider myself an ambassador and someone to look up to, but I'm going to push this project for three years until I get my way so I can achieve fame and money. Even if it means making fun of the community that I claim to care oh so dearly about."

To outsiders, Yaya and these attention whores are martyrs. To the community, they're nothing but a fresh pile of geese shit that you accidentally step in while you're out for a jog. Outsiders truly think that they're community ambassadors. To people who don't know them and their bullshit, it gives them a fresh start. And, when people have called them out on their shit, they delete comments, block people, and deem them as "trolls". People don't like being lied to.

To keep the show going, they have to lie. Even if it's at the expense of an entire community that they, once again, claim to give so much of a shit about. That's fucked up, no matter how much you try to put on your rose tinted glasses and say otherwise. It is fucked up to go on and on for years, giving people the impression that you give a shit about them as fellow human beings who share a common interest when you actually fucking don't. The martyr complex bullshit is getting so old and I am so sick and tired of seeing it.

But they're all a bunch of shits, why care for them? There isn't some magic connection to everyone else that cosplays which means you have to ensure they're treated right.

How does "popular opinion" even matter to your own individual cosplaying? So what if some random chicks are getting dosh and attention while shitting up the "popular opinion" of cosplay?

>> No.7050334

They're not obligated to give a shit about the community. However, she is the one who will tweet and make Facebook statuses saying otherwise. She says that she cares about the whole community. That she's an ambassador. That x needs to change or this or that, but never does shit for anyone else but herself. That's where the problem is, because she's full of shit.

Nothing wrong with not wanting to give a shit about the community in some sort of bond. Just don't fucking go around acting as if you're some sort of martyr who helps Terezi cosplayers to regain sight or some horseshit.

It matters because people consider themselves to be a part of this community and when your community is represented by a bunch of shitbags who lie and create drama, it's understandably frustrating and annoying.

I'm pretty sure you were refering to the Disney princesses, but just in case you were thinking about ops pic with the stormtrooper...
That stormtrooper is a member of the 501st Legion, and they DO NOT get paid. They are all volunteer. The 501st has rasied millions for charities all over the world, visited childrens hospitals, again all over the globe, and never recieve a penny to do so. Also, they are not even remotely funded by Lucas Film, all those costumes are bought from their own pockets, and they are not cheap either, take a good Vader for instance, those things are like 4 to 7 thousand dollars, and theat is not including all the other things needed to keep it maintained, transported, gas to get to an event, etc etc etc. Most of the time, they only get a thank you, and a bottle of water or 2 for their time to visit a hosptial, or chairty function.
And when at those functions, they do their best at never even taking off their helmets, which means no "fame" per say, just a faceless volunteer, bringing some joy to a sick or dying child and their family, or faceless person raising money for some good cause.
I'm not ranting at ya, but thought this would be a good time to mention a little bit about what the 501st does, since there was a photo of one of them in OPs post, and since cgl is more anime/lolita slanted, some people may have no clue what the 501st is, and may have always thought they are paid by Lucas Film.

when we were pointing out people being shit crazy, why did no one bring up the lines from these costume critiques on the website? you want vicious, well, here it is. yaya tears apart every body for their costume, even for silly stuff thats part of the design, or for things she does herself - get help from the hubby/adapt the design for your body. she ragged on jesse for his armor looking so good in episode one that she wasnt sure he made it.

I know, I am a member, and I have 3 legion approved costumes.

Fun fact about the bikerscout, a lot of people who are interest in joining the 501st think the fast and cheapest way to get their foot in the door is making a scout, which is not true at all. The scout costs about the same and sometimes a bit more then a TK (stormtrooper), looks simple to make, but can get complex. Hell my scout bucket costs more then a tk, and more then a really good normal motorcycle helmet.
Oh and don't get me started about what went into making my jawa! I was totally off base one that one, I was thinking I could whip one out for around 100 bucks or so, WRONG. I am sure, you could, but it would come out looking like a "Party City Speeshul", and not get approval by legion standards.

And yep, the 501st is often invited to do various media events, from something small to big things like concerts and theme parks ( Disney Star Wars Weekends), but we never get paid for it, ever. It's all volunteer. For Disney Star Wars weekends down in Orlando, we go on down, suit up, sweat our asses off, wait, wait, and more waiting in the Fla heat and humidity in armor, walk the parade, and get to hang out in the park after ( sans costumes, as they don't allow us to after). Then we go home, and we don't even get free hotel rooms.
But I love it, and trooping is a blast!

But I have a question for those still reading the threads. The 501st doesn't refer to what we do as cosplay, do yall consider us cosplayers? When I hear the term, I always think of folks who are into the japan and games fandoms. So, what do yall think?

>> No.7062332

>>7062267
cosplay has simply become a "catch-all" term over the last 15+ years of the big anime push in the states. 15 years ago, a few may have said it was cosplaying and more likely just call it larping as that's what it's closest to. nowadays most will call it cosplaying and some will still remember the term larping.

>> No.7062714

>>7062332
How is it closest to larping when there's no role playing involved? Being in character during an event isn't the same thing as role playing. Larping and cosplaying are tangentially related at best.

Although the phrase cosplay was coined by a japanese person, it was used in reference to a largely white demographic at a convention in Los Angeles almost 30 years ago (World Science Fiction Convention). While it's true the phrase has gained popularity in the last decade and a half due to anime conventions, cosplaying itself is not a japanese notion or idea. 15 years ago, cosplaying was still plenty popular, if not as mainstreamed as today.

ANIME? WHAT'S THAT???

>> No.7062779

I'm disappointed because I would hope/assume this show would go more like Project Runway, where cosplayers would have to choose one of their top 3 dream cosplays, and then be given some funding to complete it in a set amount of time (say, a month before the con, depending on complexity). That would go way farther to highlight the individual steps taken, the techniques used, problems, etc. Each "season" could focus on a particular con, with each episode focusing on a single cosplayer. So say, a ten-episode season, 3 episodes dedicated to each cosplayer, then the last one being the actual judging at the convention. But from what I've gotten reading about it through these threads, there's almost nothing like that?

"I was stunned and honored when Pas and I won the Best in Show award against a wide field of extraordinarily talented cosplayers. We spent that first night astonished, flattered, and excited that the $1800 cash prize would help pay for the 1800-mile round trip from Colorado.

Except the next day after several conversations with staff we learned that there wasn’t a cash prize… we needed to fill out some forms by email and then we’d get some other form of payment. In the next few weeks most or all the other teams got their smaller prizes. Pas and I did not. We sometimes went weeks and later months between responses from the cosplay head, were promised several times that the payment would be out within the week, but it never was."

I started in anime cosplay, then joined the 501st and Rebel Legion. Just structurally it's a lot different than cosplay.

- Done in a big group rather than individual or small group.
- Highly organized.
- No competition.
- Based on live action costumes, unlike animanga/comics cosplay, which means you have to be accurate to a lot more construction details and use a set range of materials. ("Must be princess seamed," "Must be made of a 1999 Venus razor.")
- Often not cosplaying a specific character at all. Sure in /cgl/-style cosplay you sometimes get people playing a video game character class, and there are specific characters you can costume for in the 501st, but /cgl/'s cosplay is usually a specific character and the 501st is usually a faceless trooper.

I still think of it as cosplay, but it's kind of in between cosplay and historical re-enactment.

(If anyone is seriously thinking about getting into the 501st, the cheapest costume is undoubtedly Imperial Officer Corps, and that's at least $275 if you get your IOC uniform from CosplaySky, eBay your boots, and get second-hand belt/cap/rank bars/code cylinders.)
