Can we get a thread going for cosplay- and lolita-related thrift store/Goodwill finds?

For lolitas:
Hard mode: Finding loliable items
Insane mode: Finding burando
Neverending Nightmare mode: Finding a dream piece from your wishlist

For cosplayers:
Neverending Nightmare mode: Finding the perfect item and it fitting you like a glove without any holes, stains, or foul odor

I thrift often anyways for my normal wardrobe (not into jfash) so finding cosplay pieces is icing on the cake.

Fucking macklemore though, ruined my hobby for at least a year when thrifting got really popular amongst young people and they bought up all the good shit in my size.

I thrift a lot for my normal wardrobe too, though I live in an area that's pretty "out of touch" with alt fashion so it's really rare to find anything that would be workable for most cosplay or lolita

I guess our local hipsters missed that trend because I never really noticed a lapse in good shit in my size.

I can't get a good photograph of it because iphone camera in a dark room but I found a great black blouse the other day with nice quality lace, cloth buttons, pin-tucking down the front, and a cute little peter-pan collar. I'm super happy about it, hahaha. I'm always holding my breath and hoping that someday a lolita might move to my area and then somehow her clothes would end up in our Goodwill, but chances of that are pretty much slim to none lol.

Is it weird that I would be super excited to move to a big city just for the thrifting?

Neverending Nightmare Mode-ish:
Wine blouse that was exactly the right shade for my IW skirt, fit perfectly, and had no damage or fading despite being a vintage piece

Not Goodwill, but found perfect-fitting ankle boots in the clearance section for $4
Loads of classic style vintage blouses, hats, and a pair of wine rocking horse heel-style shoes

found a pink sailor jsk for $3
and bodyline earmuffs for 5¢
The Jsk is a babydoll, and I'm 6ft..
but I'm not giving it up. I've seen photos of it all across tumblr. I've worn it during the summer on hot days.
also found a popple(25¢), a working game boy advance ($1),
a sailor moon doll with all accessories included (25¢) a bag of 15 old gen mlps.($3), geta and gothic lolitable heels from rocketdog's Japan-inspired releases ($12 total), and a carousel horse large enough to seat a small child ($20),
the carousel horse needs to be repainted but I've always dreamed of having one. I'd like to make it an art project to do with friends.

It always stresses me out when brand gets donated. I'm happy when lolitas find them, yes, its good, great find, you feel like a champ.
but it makes me wonder, why WERE they donated? what happened to the lolitas originally? It pains me to see these items given away, because if its for charity then the owner could of just sold the dress and given the money away to charity, which is a lot more profitable for charities then it ending up in the $5 bin. But that's just me.

>> No.7063868

>>7063858
Lolitas do die and have their possessions go missing or have to abandon their possessions/shitty housemats who steal their stuff not really understanding its value, life is hard like that.

Most likely though, the lolita moved away to college and the parents did a clean-out or the stuff was considered not good enough on comm sales and sat around for a long time until the owner got fed up and donated.

I love thrift shopping, especially since there's so many different thrift shops in my area. Orange county is crawling with them, not just major ones like Goodwill, but smaller independently owned places. One of my favorite finds was a pair of cute boots I paid $4 for a friend at a Foster Care Auxiliary run one.

I'm always hunting for loliable shoes and blouses at thrift stores. Also I've had luck finding bridal petticoats. I've got one I've taken apart and I'm making into a new petticoat. I've had luck and found a few pieces. The blouse in this picture is a thrift store find. I should probably consider replacing the sleeves, but it's the only short sleeve blouse I have atm.

Most of my blouses come from thrift stores, there are excellent vintage blouses that I've gotten, perfect for both classic and sweet. I've also found a handmade skirt with little flowers and hearts on it and embroidery on the bottom. Not sure what it was originally from, but was perfect for lolita. Cool vintage hats and shoes too, and got a Malco Modes petti around Halloween.
Closest thing I ever found to brand was a Liz Lisa sweater. Had a dream about finding a full Toy Parade JSK set with matching pony bag at goodwill once, but went thrifting when I woke up and found nothing even remotely loli-able.

Used to thrift a lot, knew where all the good stores were. Highlights of my shopping:
>designer military style suit with pencil skirt, jacket works well with classic lolita, $12
>several blouses and nice jackets for lolita around $1-$5
>white ruffled cotton skirt perfect for an underskirt $3
>wool button-front trousers $3 (tailored and hemmed up into breeches)
>dress/jsk very similar to Meta's kimono print series, apparently from some expensive plus suze rockabilly brand $8
>velvet quipao perfect for a cosplay I had been planning, $3

My friend's kid always makes off like a bandit at thrift shops, she found a bunch of silk saris, lots of cute loliable skirts and blouses, and tons of designer stuff.

Lots of cardigans, lots of lovely chiffon blouses. Some pretty awesome shoes. I found a sweet pastel 80's knitted sweater complete with cheesy ducks. I keep looking for Bodyline or Brand hoping I might find something, but I know of pretty much everyone in the area who might have anything.

Also, popples, G1 ponies, Pound Puppies new in package, vintage care bears. Sometimes I have really good hauls, other times I can't find much of anything.

>> No.7064247

One of the charity shops where I live has a separate part of the store dedicated to vintage, and I can usually find some decent blouses there (and it's usually a bit cheaper than the 'proper' vintage stores). Last time I went in, there was also a loliable dress in pink and blue with a very princessy cut, but the lace was terrible and it didn't fit quite right on the shoulders so I didn't want to take another project on. I've been regretting it since, and might go and see if its still there when I next move in.

Jfa:
Most of my wardrobe is thrifted
I've found a myriad of blouses, dresses, and skirts, recently a cute straw hat. Not too long ago I found the perfect sailor collar drop waist dress and another old-school drop waist dress at a consignment store, although I'm waiting for my cousin to tailor them a bit for me.

Lolita:
Hard mode: blouses, a pair of ankle boots(impossible for my giant feet), and a non-brand sailor op that I sold, mainly because it was too big for me. pic related

Insane mode: Not sure if it counts, but I found pic related bodyline dress. I've removed the ugly lace on the sleeves and the cravat. Not sure what to do with it

Neverending Nightmare mode: Tuk's Victorian Maiden knockoff ghille boots in my size. I wanted them for years and snagged them at my local DAV for $6.00.
Also, I've found a surprising amount of Bodyline, F+F, and other such things at the local thrift shops. I'm the only dedicated lolita within an hour's drive, so I have no clue where they are coming from. Also, keep an eye out for 70's secretary blouses, vests, and felt boaters. I've made out like a bandit over the years, seriously some of my vintage hats are nicer than my IW and Meta ones. I just make my own ribbon chin straps for them. And, as everyone knows, if you want a lolita-style blouse in some redonkulous color, go to goodwill (or ebay) and trawl for old secretary blouses. This. There's one goodwill in my area that has a bin full of clothing. Most of them have everything on shelves, and this is the only one in my area that has the large bin.

The majority of goodwill's in my area receive a large stock of stuff from Target. Instead of trashing the items like some stores, Target sends off all their stuff that didn't sell in Clearance to Goodwill. Of course not everything ends up going to Goodwill.

One time when we were moving, my husband and I stopped off by the dumpster by the store(it's wide out in the open) to grab a couple boxes they had around and any sitting on the top. My husband looked inside the dumpster and they had a bunch of desks and other furniture pieces. Stuff that was damaged or not stable. We ended up snagging a end table that was sitting on top(only issue with it is that it's a little wobbly). Reminds me of all the times I've read the dumpster diving threads on /diy/

It's basically a warehouse full of giant bins of stuff, and you have to get in there and dig through the bins. My friend goes there pretty often (she sells vintage clothes on eBay), and there can be rusty metal, pointy things, maybe a dirty diaper or dead rat, and just general grime and grossness. The one in P-town is pretty much everything is thrown into bins, only the shoes and large furniture are really separated out, and the shoes aren't in pairs so you have to look for a matching one

I live in a fairly nice city but my local Goodwill doesn't have anything interesting most of the time. I want cool vintage stuff, but half the clothing items are crap from Target, muumuus, and basic-ass t-shirts you could get brand new for less than what they charge.

But anyway, my most interesting thrift store finds (not all Goodwill):
-Sailor Moon and Rainbow Brite VHS tapes
-90s Animerica magazines (omg you guys, check out this awesome new anime called Pokemon!)
-Gunne Sax dress
-Korean Hanbok
-Various teacups and china
-Japanese craft DIY book

I've found a metric fuckton of loliable shit while I was out thrifting. It depends a lot on timing and the area you're shopping in, but you can find some good stuff second-hand. All the blouses came to me for under $5. I love the detailing on some of these almost as much as I do my brand blouses, the pink blouse has flowers embroidered on the collar and the white peter-pan blouse has similar detailing on the collar and pintucks. the reticule was like $10? and the jabot was thrown in a pile of doll clothes and sold for fifty cents because someone had mistaken it as an apron for an American Girl doll or something.

also dresses! all three are gunne saxe, the cardigan doesn't have a label so I have no idea where it came from. I once found a gunne saxe medieval-inspired wedding dress for $20 at my local thifting place before it got super-touristy, but my ribcage couldn't fit it so I had to leave it behind...that was the beginning of a minor obsession, haha.

I guess this one other thing counts as 'insane mode', even if it's not related to lolita. I once brought home a Members Only leather bomber jacket--still available on the webshop (for ~$200, no less)--for twenty bucks.

Not clothing, but earlier this year I was perusing my local animal welfare, when I turned a corner and this came into sight.

That's right, a mint condition Cardcaptor Sakura clow book complete with every card, not a scratch on them.
That little sticker at the top there? £2.

I later told my friend who works in the about my find (they didn't know what CCS was), and he told his co-workers about it offhandedly and they got all nasty and bitchy because they mistakenly thought that I bought it to resell it and that I should have brought it to them immediately and informed them of it's real value so that they could sell it on eBay themselves.

The thrift store that I live near is in the second most wealthiest city in the state and has regular dumps of anime/manga related shit. I got Azumanga Daioh volumes 1 & 2 in perfect condition for 40 cents each. Other than manga, it mostly consists of VHS tapes of older animes but I don't buy them for the intent to sell. I bring them to swap meets instead.

I know this isn't about thrifting but does anyone else go to swap meets? The hauls that I get from them are insane. The last one that I went to I got two NES zelda games, and FF1 (NES) for a naruto akatsuki cloak and a wig. I got a lot more than that but the trades that people offered me almost seemed unfair for THEM. Sometimes I actually felt so bad for how much their offers would rip themselves off so I'd throw in something else for free.

shit man
i always find sewing stuff
got a bag full of elastic for cosplay for a dollar
then one time I was at a thrift store where all clothes were a dollar and everything else was 50% off
this was before I got into lolita but I picked up a lace variety bag and a bag full of sewing supplies for a dollar each.
they were both donated by the same lady, who I presume died/went to an old folks home. it was FILLED with great quality lace and trims and even clothing tags for her homemade baby clothing brand.
the other bag had tons of elastic, needles, buttons velcro, zippers, snaps, hook and eyes, etc. The elastic alone (what I wanted at the time and what I could only really see in the bag) made it worth it. and everything smelled heavily of potpourri
I regret not buying the other bag filled with lace though ;__;
