Being German, I have never gotten why 'blackfacing in cosplay' is an issue. I picked up a thing or two about its completely racist origins on tumblr but then, AFAIK, those were either caricatures or taking roles that were reserved for people of color...

I do not think there is a thing like 'taking a role away from someone' in cosplay, noone can really claim a character for themselves and I think the motivation for cosplay usually includes a huge respect for the character. If I am cosplaying as a character, I do it because I love that character, not to make fun of him/her and if I change the color of my skin to be more fitting and grow towards the image of him/her, I can hardly find something negative about it.

Then again, people keep telling me, as a white person, I would never understand and that's probably why I am so confused about this matter. Can someone here maybe explain what is so bad about 'blackfacing' in cosplay? And why it does personally affect you? (I really dont mean to piss off anyone, it's just a concept that's kinda foreign and hard to grasp to me)

Basically blackface is something that has been consistently used to mock black people and portray stereotypes.

This is my preferred option. I don't think of it as white washing as it is working within you're 'limitations' as a black person I can't lighten my skin (i mean i can but i'll always be brown) so i either have to limit who i can cosplay or say fuck it and cosplay whoever I fucking want. Obviously lighter skinned people have the option to darken themselves to fit a darker skinned character if they so choose. But who cares? Cosplay who you want to cosplay and leave the big unchangeable things (like disability status or skin color) alone and just work your best to get the outfit and the hair just right. To me those are the most important things of accurate cosplay, outfit and hair, skin color is tertiary at best if not outright disregarded

I lived in Japan for a little while and I am black. I first saw blackface on a television show there. I saw it again, when a Japanese comedian was trying to imitate Beyonce on another show. Both instances I assume were not done out of hatred. Although it did make me feel uncomfortable, I didn't rush to my facebook and start ranting. I can't really get upset about blackface in Japan, because their knowledge of the negative views of black face is little to none. Actually most racial issues for dark skinned people is relatively unknown to them. I had an hour conversation with a Japanese coworker who had asked me what "acting black" was after reading it in a book. I digress, in the Japanese media, I do not support blackface, but I understand it exists because of naivety.

However, in America, most people who attempt blackface know the social stigma. It may not bother me, but it may bother others. So definitely watch your back if you attempt to do this anon. You may want to do something a little more tasteful.
