Ugh ok, so this was about a year and a half ago, and I thought that no pictures existed of me in this, but then my friend took it upon herself to post it to my wall (where all my lolita friends could see) a few months ago. I knew damn well that this wasn't lolita, but I thought it looked loliable "enough" to hang out with real lolitas at a meet. Thankfully I didn't stay this way long.

Funny story about this picture - I planned the meet that it was taken at... and didn't show up. I couldn't find parking so me and the friend who took the picture wandered around a park for a while before going home. The girls who did show up were like "what's up with that new girl who didn't go to her own meet?"

I have really bad luck with weather and meet-ups. The first time I tried to go to a real meet-up, one with more than just one other lolita involved, it snowed more in a few hours than it had in years. Turns out that one of the other lolitas who was going to the meet lived near my brother's place, where I was staying for the weekend before heading home for winter break. We decided to skip the (now dangerous) highway drive into the city for the meet and got together for coffee instead.

We really hit it off and she's still one of my best lolita friends. However, we spent so long talking at the coffee shop and getting to know one another, that eventually her mom called her cell phone and told her to look outside.

While we had been chatting away, nearly a foot of snow had accumulated and was turning to ice on the roads, so we had to book it out of there. My car almost stalled getting out of the parking lot and her car slid backwards on the ice for a good two feet before it found traction and was able to get up the hill.

It was still an awesome experience, though.

I have no pictures (thank god) but my first coord was a sweet one and all items were from Anna House. I looked ridiculous because the colours didn't match. I wore it to a concert and because the shoes were too big I got heel injuries and started bleeding over my socks and shoes. On the way back to my transport I had to lean on my friends' shoulders because I literally couldn't walk anymore.
This happened five years ago but I'm still ashamed of that outfit.

My first and only attempt at lolita from about 3 years ago.
I found mori to be more of my style in the end, and so I never have worn this skirt again.

I still spend the greater part of my time on the internet looking at lolita clothing, but for some reason or another, I can't bring myself to actually begin wearing the clothes.

HOBOY. My first "real" dress was a bodyline dress and ...dayum. I looked terrible. I was really insecure was it was, but it was then that I decided to give lolita go.

I got called bo-peep and and all kinds of the typical names you expect to hear in lolita but nothing super bad. My town is pretty conservative but eventually they came to terms that I would walk around too frequently to say anything anymore.

We have a lot of artsy types near the old-town area so most of my good experiences were there.

Don't give up, newbies. :D

There were many awful co-ords in between so I chose the ones I was most proud of when I took them.

That first co-ord.. I'd just really discovered that lolita was actually a thing and bought a Bodyline blouse second hand, made an awful skirt that was crooked thus I had to wear it crooked to make it straight, white knee-high socks and black platform Mary Janes. I wore this once to my first meet along with a bandage over my eye, one on my arm and fake blood while I toted around a Jack Skellington plushie.

Glad I've improved since then.

Agreeing with other anons, put makeup on like BB cream, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara, and lip gloss. You look super cute from the front, but the 3/4 view makes your chin look extra big (so avoid taking photos that way in the future to avoid awkwardness). Personally think those glasses are okay. Hope your meetup goes well!

Actually the blouse looks too big. I have the same blouse and it's quite tight on me and looks nothing like that on me when worn.

You could probably clip the star or the lolipop elsewhere. I think the lolipop is a two-way clip right? Maybe stick it to your waistband or to a cute bag if you'd still like to use it. You definately need more accessories. I love doing OTT and I just find myself lacking in accessories and bows myself.

A great way to obtain more? If you have any anime conventions nearby, attend it and go through the artist alley. Hopefully there will be a few people selling cute accessories! That's usually how I obtain my piles of offbrand accessories for doing OTT.

I'm really tempted to find and take the frames to my optometrist so I can get my prescription put into them, but I've never seen anyone in real life with glasses like these. It's so funny because those bigger frames look better on my face and tend to balance out the shape a bit better. Sometimes I look like I have a giant chin with them on, other times I don't. It depends on the wig, lighting and camera angle.

ditch the boots -- the color and style don't match with what you have (the boots are more ega or casual night out -- not very classic imo). go for brown boots in a lighter color if you can find them; lace-up sounds like they'd match what you have. i second getting cream floral patterned tights.

straw hat sounds okay, though it depends of course on the style and if the colors match. you have deep colors at your disposal balanced by cream, so try to work with that if you can.

First casual coord vs first real coord

I was saved from having a TOTALLY ita stage by the fact that loli-shaped skirts suddenly and inexplicably became popular on the high street. First real coord is a homemade dress and the coord was made with help from people on here! So thanks guys.

Also apologies for the fact that I have a super fancy camera and have still managed to take the world's shittiest photo.

I don't know if either of these really count... The first one was a borrowed outfit from a friend. It was my first time wearing Lolita! I still know next to nothing about it all, but I felt pretty dressing up~ The second one is an outfit that I found in a shop (you guys probably know which one) and mostly I took the photo so I could see what my friends thought about the dress. I was unsure if I wanted to gt it or not, so it was for a second opinion. I'm still totally in love with it though. In the end I didn't wind up buying it (waaaaayyyy too pricey) but man... maybe one day.

Honestly, because it's secondhand, it's pretty much a toss-up of where you'll find it next. Check the EGL Sales Comm and the FB page Lolita Sales in English and post a WTB, there's also a buy/sell thread here you can post on, as well. You can look on auctions like Yahoo! Japan and Mbok. You can also use consignment stores like Closet Child (they're updating stock in like, two hours), Alice+Fururun, Usagiyouhinten, Violet Blue on Rakuten (this one needs an SS), Tokyo Alice on Rakuten, Fairy Angel (this one is a little overpriced, IMO), Maiden Clothing, Honey Holic (needs and SS as well)... etc. Basically, if you're looking for something older and not as popular, it will take some time and you end up searching a lot of places. I saw it on Usagiyouhinten, the red op version, but it sold out a while ago. Here's the link for price comparison, though: http://usagiyouhinten.ocnk.net/product/5771

Babby's first full coord in progress worn to a con 2 months ago. I got laid off a job I had barely started at the month before the con and still don't have a new job, so it's gone unfinished. It's okay to ask questions. If you need to ask ones like that, though, you might want to spend some time going through EGL or some lolita FAQs; these will help you avoid newbie mistakes as well as give you a ton of general, really helpful info.
As for the link that the other anon posted: Miss Harajuku is really hit or miss and often has horrible mark ups. Spend some time looking around (googling the name of the dress with ds, for example "honey cake switching jsk ds" can bring you to old sales [checking the image search with this is also helpful]) can give you a good idea of what the dress is actually worth.
There are also occasionally price check threads on here where people give their estimates or post what they've seen it going for.

The thread has fallen pretty far down. I'll go ahead and bite.

I wore this today and well, you can see, I still need a lot of help with babies first coord.

Stuff I'm already noting on needing to fix. the dead obvious being a decent petticoat. You can see how terribly deflated mines is in the photo Switching the shrug for a different one(if I wear one), different tights(I have to get plus size because of my fat size)

The shoes match up with the blue in Alice's dress on the JSk, but I think I need a hat with a blue ribbon in the same color to better balance, or just switch to pink shoes. I also had some lace gloves I WAS going to wear with it, but I couldn't find them.

Also I like the short sleeve blouse, but should I change the sleeves? I think them being so small doesn't work with my arms.

and yes, I'm leaving my face in since I'd like better recommendations for hair style, color, or at least wigs that' will flatter my face. That is my natural hair and unfortunately, it's super thin so I'm very limited on what I can do with it. Also, sorry about my makeup, watery eyes, and going lighter on it since it's been a hot day and I really didn't want to go to heavy on my layers.

>> No.7064260

>>7064209
I'm sorry to inform you that those shoes don't work at all; they're far too bright.
W/r/t the blouse: the sleeves are a bit weird and make your arms look chubbier than they probably are. I would change it.
You do need to do something with your hair and make up. I think you could do cute curls with your hair if you'd like to use your natural hair.

If not, a medium brown wig would probably look good on you (hard to say for sure since I can't ascertain your skin tone from the photos). If you don't want to deal with taobao or a shopping service, lockshop and GLW are probably your best bets, though both have their drawbacks. Look around and read reviews on what you like.

Make up: You need to bring out your eyes! Either curl your eyelashes and wear mascara (or more of it) and some eyeliner (brown will look more natural) or invest in some more natural false eyelashes. Also, using a little eyeshadow can go a long way in making your eyes pop.

Certainly not one of the worst first coords I've seen, but you're correct in saying that you still need help.

Yeah. I really feel like the color is to bright, even if they do match up with the blue in the jsk. They were originally black and I repainted them to the blue, so I could always repaint them again to a pink or cream color. Pink I think would be better, especially if I brought in tights with light colors, but cream might be more versatile.

I usually prefer full length sleeves since my upper arms are fairly fat. I was wondering if I should consider investing in some chiffon long sleeve blouses for hotter weather since short sleeve doesn't look that good on me(Or at least stuff down to my elbows are better)

I do actually like using wigs too, it's just on the super hot days today, I opted for my regular hair instead. Hopefully this might give you a better idea on my skin tone. I've at least gotten a little more sun. I think my hair is a medium brown color(more noticeable in the sun then indoor lighting)

I've got some false eyelashes, and I'm still getting used to trying to wear them. I curl my eyelashes, and use illegal length mascara, but it really doesn't do enough, or wears out after awhile so it looks like I'm not wearing any at all. Happened today since I opted out of falsies. My poor eyes were watering today.

Lol that's fucking terrible, I remember seeing you post those shoes you were painting and wondering how the fuck they would look in a coord. Terrible, obviously.

Everything except for the JSK and the tights need to go. The shoes are hideous and look like some nanny's square dancing shoes, get some nice regular pumps. The blouse has a peter pan collar which is a good start, but the sleeves are dire. Do something to your hair and fringe, and wear some goddamned make-up. You look like you rolled out of bed and into this outfit, why do people think it's okay to have their nasty regular wavy shit hair out ever? Get a wig, or straighten/curl/style/put some product into it. Also stop sucking in your face like you're trying to chin yourself in the neck.

Why do people always assume I'm not. This happened in the photos of my Sailor Jupiter cosplay. I'm wearing makeup. Eyeshadow, mascara, lipstick, blush, foundation, powder, concealer. You can even see the blush in the photos. I wear lighter color makeup and the lipstick is gone because it wore off through the day. I prefer lighter colors.

Not who you're replying to, but I think maybe your makeup isn't obvious because there's not as much eye definition as we usually see in cosplay/lolita. Your skin and lips look nice in a natural way, but learn how to use eyeliner (at least brown if you think black is too harsh) or fake lashes to make your eyes show up more because it makes a big difference.

As for hair, I think it just looks a bit thin on top. The side-sweep and hairclip in pic 2 is alright, you could also try teasing it and cutting a side fringe? Dig up a hair tutorial thread from the archives.

Well you're obviously not wearing ENOUGH make-up, or well enough, which should have fucking occurred to you by now if everyone keeps assuming you're not. In your cosplay photo above I can't see any of it, except maybe some blush and foundation. Learn how to apply eyeliner, eyeshadow, and mascara. I don't even mean bright colored eyeshadow, something neutral color to deepen your hollows and lighten your brows. Shape your brows more symmetrical and fill them in, even at this distance I can tell they're splotchy. There's absolutely no contouring going on anywhere, and if you did then you didn't do well enough. Stop being so damn defensive and google, try new looks on at home, take photos and find a flattering angle. Straighten your hair, that natural wave is not pretty. Curve it inwards for a bob, thicken your fringe, braid it, curl it into big waves, bitch it's your own goddamned face, find what works for you.

Also your seams are damn wonky and wrinkly too. Dat greasy blunt chopped bangs on the wig are nasty and so is your pit. Nobody needs to see that.

>> No.7064437

>>7064433
I can't thicken my bang fringe even if I wanted too. If I tried that, I wouldn't have enough to even frame the side of my face.

Also, I may think something looks good, but it doesn't necessarily mean it actually DOES look good on me. That's why I'm asking for opinions and help in the first place. I'd rather not make a mistake and end up butchering my hair and be stuck with even worse hair.

>> No.7064475

Seriously though, don't ignore the good advice in >>7064433
You can get clip in fringes and grow out your own hair to give yourself more volume, or get clip in extensions to fill out your own hair, you definitely want more volume. I'd suggest curling your hair in larger, defined curls rather than straightening it, as a fellow doesn't-have-much-hair person it'll look much better in defined curls than sorry and flat.

The best way to find out if something looks good is to take photos of it, my sense of fashion/makeup/overall style improved in leaps and bounds when I started doing that. Your makeup may be there but it's not applied in a way that flatters you hence why everyone's telling you to put some on. Maybe googling "natural make up looks" would help you see where the shadows/contours need to be applied for starters.

Right. I'm actually really grateful for all the help I'm getting, even from the anon I'm arguing with(I guess you press enough buttons you can get some decent answers.

I think I've generally been able to get so far.

Natural black/darker brown looks better on me. I need to shape and fill my eyebrows more. Naturally they're too sparse looking.

I Need to better invest in conturing my makeup. My current makeup is too flat looking and a lot of it is getting lost in photos.

Keep working towards learning to put false eyelashes in, and invest in checking out gyaru/ulzzang eye makeup tutorial to help better bring out my eyes.

Sideswept bangs look better on me, and to invest in clip on bangs, and extensions to help bring volume to my thin hair.

Keep taking pictures of me in different things to see if something actually does look good on me or not.

The thing with make up is that it always looks like you're wearing less than you are in photos, so you need to really apply it heavier, especially if you're cosplaying. I can't see any eyeliner whatsoever on your make up pictures, and it makes your eyes look quite small. Because you haven't defined your lips or your eyes, the focus is drawn to your nose which is making it seem bigger than it actually is. I'd recommend drawing more focus to your eyes if you're not a fan of heavier make up. Try lots of different style of eyeliner, and see which ones you like best (or post pics here so people can say which ones look good on you if you're not sure). My recommendation is trying a style like this pic. You want to put some shadow into the inner corner of your eyes to make them seem closer together, as well as shadow in the creases of your eyelids, heavier towards the inner corners. Fully line the top of your lids, starting towards the inner corner and thickening slightly towards the outer corners. I personally like lightly outlining the outer bottom corner of eyes, from the outer corner to about half way and then adding a little bit of shadow in, but it might not look right for you. Finally, as for your blush, I'd recommend placing it higher on your face. Right now it's making your cheeks look lower and your face longer.

If you are seriously wearing make up in any of these photos I can't believe it. I sincerely think you are lying (not mad about it, I just don't see any evidence of makeup.) If you like your dark-haired features you really need to start darkening the rest of your features.

False eyelashes are not that hard to put on. I don't understand how you find it so challenging that you are still learning how.. What parts are you struggling with? I might be able to help you?

Like, here's an example of my own makeup styles. Even with light makeup, you can TELL I've done stuff with my eyebrows and lashes. If your lashes don't take mascara well, the only thing you can really do is wear false lashes... I can't stand to go out without false lashes on anymore.

Also, as far as 'something to do with your hair'-- why not try not just brushing it and leaving it where it falls?? It's not that hard.. Get a straightener, get a curling iron, fuck, even a good blow-dryer would help you out. You can spend less than $20 on any of those items just for a start. You say you look better with side swept bangs, but honestly I think that girls say that as a cop-out because they don't want to deal with the effort of straightening their bangs every day or putting them up. Is it really that hard to just do something with yourself?

My biggest pet peeve is girls who bother to get 'dressed up' (cosplay, lolita, going out to dinner or work) and don't bother to do your make up. Why even bother going out if you aren't gonna put in the effort to look nice? Fair enough if you don't know how, but this is 2013, there are youtube tutorials on EVERYTHING.

I really wish you did more with make up. Your cosplay really gets let down because of it. Your costumes look good, but the lack of make up (or at least lack of visible make up) really does let you down. For example, your Moltres gijinka. You went with really vibrant and shiny fabric, very vibrant wig, but then your face looks so washed out. You could have gone with beautiful reds and golds, with strong eyeliner to emulate Moltres' very defined eyes. Sage because this is a lolita thread, not a cosplay thread.

What do you mean "fuck up your eyes"? It's like.. it's not like you are putting glue IN your eye.

Apply the glue, blow on it a bit, wait about 30 seconds for it to become tacky, apply it as close to the lash line as possible (yes, it's uncomfortable at first, cry about it-- no don't, you'll fuck up your make up), open your eyes to check placement before it dries anymore, then keep your eye closed and press down both ends of the lash (and another finger in the middle if you aren't a complete buffoon to help make sure it's all applied down) for about 15-20 seconds, then remove hands and open eye. It's not rocket science. You made pasta art in school didn't you? Just glue along the lines. Seriously.

SERIOUSLY.

>> No.7072764

Brown needs to go, I don't like the plain white tights, they should have some kind of embellishment on them. The boots cut off your legs in an odd place and make them appear weird, I want to say stumpy, but that's not quite it because of how thing your legs are. The wristcuffs look off because the sleeves on your blouse don't have a nice cuff (I also don't like the material, it looks shiny?) what kind of collar does it have? Switch out the brown for either white or even gold (the print has gold right?). I'd go with ankle socks with lace toppers and a show with a small heel but not a boot.

>> No.7072765

>>7072758
I'm not personally big on the wrist cuffs with the half sleeves seeing how thick they are and how they section your arms the way they do.
But I don't mind the brown since your shoes are dark too. If you had a dark brown hair piece too (if your hair isn't dark brown already), it might balance more.
The only thing I could really see happening if you were really uncomfortable with the brown would be to find stuff the same as the browner accents in the dress, or stuff that had similar accents. But I personally like the dark outlying accents the bag and shoes make.
