Made a shirt for my Tank Girl costume today. Any tips on weathering stretch knits? The cheese grater and sandpaper methods I was using on my butt flap seem to be not working as well on my shirt. Also made a knife sheath and totally fucked it up so I have to make another one. You can see it tucked into my thigh belt being awful.

Anyways lots to go. I'm gonna start painting my knife tomorrow, ordered gloves tonight, ordered different thigh highs I can cut up, gotta find a different cross for my earrings, rebuzz and bleach my head, make an RPG-7 with my boyfriend and maybe make a spur for my boot if time permits and I will be golden.

Basically what >>7052952 said. Also it varies from project to project.

Like you said if you plan on selling the helmet, prop gun or whatever then a mold will be required and you'll make the money back.

Also it just saves time to make a mold on a smaller piece if you find that it's repeating. Case in point I'm working on a Wonder Woman shield from injustice and there are stars all around the piece. I made a simple master star and molded that for about 50$.

Thanks a lot!

It was not as expensive as estimated and mostly made from leftovers I had from my Loki-cosplay and a sword-prop I had made. Given that I had everything at home and therefore only have to calculate parts of it, it cost me around 30€ to make these, as I use very few material. Rebound is a silicone you can apply relatively thinly, if you back it with a mastermold, and Smooth Cast 65D is for rotation casting, therefore not too much material was used.

Since I make handles for my girlfriend as well and many of my friends are cosplaying from SnK as well, I thought making a mold was worth it. Also it gives me the possibility of making the handles hollow and putting mechanic parts in without much sanding.

For starters, 0.9 kg Rebound would be ~30€, 0.86 kg Smooth Cast 65 would be ~20€. And that is basically everything necessary. Aditive things like usinge Ure-Fil3 are completely optional but make the material sturdier , easier to sand and save resine. Bought a bucket of Urefil for 26€ when I started casting and it's still half-filled.

>> No.7054052

>>7052952
Thanks Maguma :)
Basically what you said. I am really perfectionist about things and somewhat in love with the Smooth Cast products and their outcome. And since I have to cast 4 handles at least, it saves a lot of time for me. Plus, If I get in financial trouble, I can sell some to friends, for decent prices- since then it will be only the resine I have to buy, it will not be very expensive for them.

>> No.7054069

>>7052993
These dildos are actually sold friends onry (ohohoh) cause I had really bad experiences with making commissions (as in, a customer accusing me of trying to sabotage her costume since she claimed the paint of the armor I made her was wearing off and 'destroying her costume' without contacting me about it first so we could find a solution... later we found out she used cheap pleather whose surface probably was not cured fully and must have reacted with the clear varnish as she rolled costume, armor and everything simply up and stuffed it in a bag. Was too late to stop the shitstorm of 14y.o.'s harrassing me though.).

I'm sorry about that but I am also really afraid of making even more bad experiences and losing fun in the hobby since working under pressure and calculating prices is something I am not really good at.

No, ive been doing this entirely by eye, and have never really thought of using a tutorial or anything actually. I just gathered up an enormous number of reference pictures and marked it off with a pencil. Honestly id say just go for it, if it looks bad, you can always try again, thats what practice is for! Also ive done all the cutting on this build with a coping saw alone, so dont think you need some fancy power tools to do relatively basic woodworking. Hell this is the second prop ive ever made from wood in my life and its actually been quite easy! Wood (and MDF in particular) is a very forgiving medium when it comes to stuff like this.

>>7055663
No this thing is entirely a non functional prop, ive just been trying to use real parts where i can to make it look more real. For example the pick up in the middle is a block of EVA foam, but i plan on using a real bridge and tuning pegs since not only will they look better, theyd also be aweful to try and scratch build. I think i may try and make a working guitar in the future sometime, but that wont be for quite a while.

The pattern needs minor alterations, including sleeve length, and revamping the whole collar, as well as adding the pockets and shoulder things.

This app only lets me reply to one person at a time, but to the crooked stitching poster, It's all I see. Unfortunately I've got 4 costumes to finish in a week and am rushing a bit. If it seems only slightly off, I don't fix it this time around. There's net enough time!

Well again, im not exactly experienced at this either, but i used some spare 3/4" MDF i had lying around, and a bit of pink insulation foam for the backing on the neck. However if i were doing this again, i would definitely suggest using 1" MDF instead, the 3/4" is just a little too thin in my opinion. In the end though, just make sure you use MDF. The stuff is cheap because in the world of legitimate woodworking, its seen as complete shit wood (its essentially sawdust and wood glue compressed together), but in the world of prop making, the stuff is god-tier. And if you do end up doing it and have any questions, feel free to hit me up, emails in the field. Im happy to help as best as i can.

This is about it from me for tonight, i drilled and put in the screws for the pickguard and pickups, installed strap pegs, and put the first of likely several coats of clear coat on. Now i just need to find the bridge and tuning pegs and i think itll be done! Not so much direct cosplay progress as it is general life progress, but I got an old dress form for free. FOR FREE.

I started my new internship in a children's theatre costume shop this past Monday, and as the merchandise/sales people were cleaning out their stock, they pulled out this old form. Since we don't really use forms too much (really, you don't need forms for animal onesies), the designer gave it to me, along with a box of fabric, and he also told me if I ever needed to use anything from the boxes of stock fabric to help myself. Guys, I landed the best job ever. ;;

She has some dried glue around the neck and is a couple inches off from my measurements, so I'll be padding and re-covering her as soon as I get the chance!

You need to shape it over a smooth and rounded surface as you heat it to get those out. Best I can help, sorry.

Like, if you have a sewing dummy, try shaping it over that (i guess you'd have to fill out the chest somehow since i know there's no boob cups or definition, just a round circle on the chest)

It's actually smoothed over my body, since I had nothing else to mold it to. I'd like to get a dress form in the future but it's a bit too expensive for me right now. I've tried making one out of duct tape but that didn't come out very well.

For now I'll try reheating and smoothing the parts over manually I guess. I'll be using craft foam on top of the Worbla for the purple/blue parts of the armor, and the parts seen will be the black. I'm hoping that will cover most of the parts that won't smooth down completely, if that's the case.

>> No.7063934

>>7063925
It doesn't seem to fit very well. If you are using metal boning and lacing instead of a mock plastic boning/zip up bodice I would suggest taking it in at least two inches. The neckline doesn't seem right, it goes up in the middle instead of scooping down.

Also the bolero lining is pretty visible - looks like it could use some topstitching.

Other then that, good job!

>> No.7063947

>>7063934

Thank you and thank you for the tips! I didn't notice the neckline thing so I'll be sure to fix that. Is it generally better to use the metal boning over the plastic? (I went with plastic for convenience and my expertise level)

And yes, the bolero needs topstitching badly. The lining shifted earlier when I was wearing it and I got really stuck. If I hadn't had a friend with me...

>> No.7064038

>>7063947
Did you get that 'bridal boning' they sell in giant rolls? It's just crap in general. However, sturdier plastics, like synthetic whale bone, are often used. Large zip ties and the bands they use to keep board together at Lowes/HD/lumberyards can make a fairly good substitute for a costume corset. However, if you're trying for a a corset that will shape you, steel boning is will hold its shape better and longer, in addition to providing more support. You need to make sure you have several sturdy layers constructing a corset with this, as the fabric will be under a lot of tension. IMO, you should only use it for a foundation garment that you'll be getting a lot of wear from, like stays for a renfest.

>> No.7064051

>>7064038

..Unfortunately yes, that's exactly what I got. I'll take a peek at a few other stores in my area to see what they have available. The sturdier plastics might be more helpful with this I think. I'll try one line of it tomorrow though to see how bad it is.

That explains why metal boned corsets are so stiff. They are nice and I'd love to make a corset for shaping use but I don't think I have the skill set quite yet for that. I'll stick to a thicker plastic one for now, thank you for the advice!

>> No.7064113

>>7064051
Yeah, the problem with it that while it might make the top look nice when you first put it in, it warps once warmed to your body. Also, if you bend too much it will crease, further deforming it. I've used it, and it'll work for a day if nothing else is available, but the other options are definitely sturdier. You can get the board bindings for free if you ask someone who works in the wood section. Depending on where you go they could be metal or plastic - both work well. Be sure round out the ends like a popsicle stick so it doesn't stab through, no matter which material you use.

Can someone explain Worbla to me?

It looks like people are using it in a similar way to craft foam, but it's more rigid and you don't need to dick around with coating it before you paint it.

How close am I?

I think you've made your helmet way too big. Unless the rest of your costume is going to be huge ( like, adding platforms to your shoes, huge ) your proportions are going to be all off and you're going to look kind of like a bobble head.

With armour cosplays, you need to make sure to make the helmet as small as possible ( to the point where you can't put it on normally, instead needing to attach it as a separate front and back rather than go in through a neck hole ), to add platforms in to your shoes to give you more leg length or even both.

Most comics and videogames use 'heroic' proportions which, unfortunately, don't translate well to real people.

Pic related, most Gundam cosplays you see have oversized heads that make them look dumb, this guy's counteracted that by using small stilts / platforms. His real feet are actually above the ankle.

Also, to the anon who asked about finger pieces on gloves, check these out. if you want to make gauntlet style gloves you want to be using shapes like this, which cover the top and sides of the fingers, but really taper in at the bottom to allow you to actually use your fingers.

On my armours I tend to place the pieces for each finger together and have a length of either elastic or wire running between them, glued in, so that when I put them on they don't slide around. If you'd rather attach them all to a glove, I'd find the smallest possible glove that fits you, so you don't need to make them oversized to fit around the material.

It's a thermoplastic. You heat it up and bend it into shape, you can also mold it like clay while it's still hot.

Most things I've seen use craft foam cut to the shape you want as a base, then sandwich the foam in between two sheets of worbla (if that sounds weird look up some tutorials, kamui does some good ones). Worbla has a sandy texture and needs a few coats of primer/gesso and a little sanding before it's paintable.

It's pretty expensive stuff, but it gets good results. Also it's strong, lightweight, and doesn't give the fumes and mess fiberglass does so it's workable indoors.

Thanks! In >>7065427 though, she's got a roll of it visible in the background. Is there an element of flexibility to it that disappears once it's heated? Or are foam and worbla similar in the way that paper and card are?

When you say it can be molded like clay; is this where I've seen people heat it up and then pull it over a dressform or themselves in order to get a shaped finish?

It's pretty flexible in one layer, but you generally put at least two layers together. The final product is fairly stiff with a bit of give.

Foam and worbla aren't very similar. They can be used in the same places but worbla is much more durable and forgiving.

What I mean by the clay thing is that you can squish it around like play doh while it's hot. Roll it up into a ball, make some horns or spikes, etc. You can heat it and pull it over something to get a shape, it has some stretch to it and won't wrinkle unless it's pulled too far. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXme58f4Ibc shows this, the part where she makes the boob cup things

from my knowledge it can ship mostly anywhere. and since in the beginning, worbla was only available in europe, i am sure it can ship to the UK! i bought mine from cosplaysupplies dot com. a bit pricey, but very awesome. i also started the helmet with purely the scraps i had from making the bracers, so you don't waste any of the worbla at all.

well I've started working on another costume, this one to be more of a dicking around costume that's easy to wear around, and just goof off.
points to whoever guesses, though i know SOMEONE will get it.
Ignore the body armor, that's for a different costume.

Ultimate Muscle and Kinnikuman need more love. You're a good person for doing this. I was thinking of making a Robin Mask helmet for my partner, although he's more likely to cosplay Kevin Mask rather than Robin Mask. But Robin Mask is his favourite.

>> No.7067855

>>7067828

I need to work on the helmet a bit more, there's a bunch of gaps between the domed cap and the sides of the helmet, and the front pushes up against my giant nose.
there's a bunch of characters i'd love to cosplay as from the Kinnikuman universe (WARSMAN), unfortunately I'm rather overweight to run around in Kevin Mask's armor! lol. So I figure just look bulky with a hoodie and Black T-shirt with the dMp logo on it. seriously dat NWO reference, makes me wanna go back in time.

I wish I could do a cosplay from the series, but sadly as a 5'3" petite girl, there's only about 2 characters I could actually do. Unless I did someone from the spinoff, although damn they all have crazy big boobies in that spinoff! I promised my partner I would do Lady Robin Mask at some point for a photoshoot (although changing the thong panties to shorts if I ever wear it to an event).

Well I still sort of need to figure that out actually. I just woke up [god damn I'm mad I fell asleep] so I'll be working on other parts now but I have room for my feet in there so the only issue is making the front part stay on. I'm thinking it'll work with velcro.

My first boot cover. Overall, super super proud of it. Easy to reproduce too.

KCon is on Saturday. Movement gear paint is curing, blades are done, costume is sewn, I just need to adjust the straps a bit, then sew my other boot.

Make sure to get velcro glue, you can get it at Joann's w/ the velcro. Saved my life when attaching velcro to worbla. Bonded sooooo much better. You could get the industrial velcro (it's cheaper at hobby lobby).

I was also wondering how walking w/ your back ankles covered will be like. You might want want to put some kind of foam/softness back there to prevent blisters.

Suwako guy here.
I'm thinking about what I should do about her hat. I /could/ just buy a normal straw hat, but I kind of want it to be nice and smooth, like in this picture. Almost soft.
What's a good way to go about doing this? Get a straw hat and then just cover it in some fabric? Would that work? Like I said, first time cosplayer here so I don't know very much ;-;
