I've seen a lot of people defending these shows by saying, "Well, this isn't about average cosplayers! This is what competitive cosplay is REALLY LIKE!"

It's pretty much true when you get down to it. On your average costume, not every bit on it a costume was crafted entirely by one person. Like the shoes could be bought and then modified by someone for the cosplay. Technically they didn't make it, just changed it.

>> No.7052661

I think the article is trying to say that cosplayers tend to get the costume sewn by someone else and just make the prop, or vice versa, whereas many cosplayers tend to make the whole thing themselves. This doesn't include buying things like shoes, belts, etc.

I think what Yaya was saying about sexualizing characters was correct. Yaya picks costumes that are already 'sexy,' whereas Nigri makes non-sexy costumes sexy. That's true, but what the hell is wrong with that? If Nigri is having fun, why is it bad? Her craftmanship is getting better and better, too. She's not as skilled as Yaya, but so what? Nigri doesn't sacrifice craftmanship for sexy, either. Her costumes look well-made, they're just not yet as intricate as Yaya's. But Yaya has had more time to hone her skills. (And still has shaky embroidery because she uses a regular sewing machine? The hell? If she can afford those implants, she can afford an embroidery machine.)

How? Just because her style is skimpy? I'd say this HoC show displays what is wrong with cosplay. Cosplay is costuming + play. Too many people forget it isn't just costuming. If you're going to compete, then yeah - pull out all the stops and apply all the skills you have. But if you're just having fun as a character you like, then... who is to judge how you do it?
Also, she does make a good portion of her own costumes. It isn't her fault that her costumes, which definitely aren't as intricate as Yaya's, got more popular than Yaya's. How many cosplayers have the skills to do what Yaya does? Few. How many have the skills to do what Nigri does? Lots. So, instead of acting like Nigri's popularity rides on not making her own stuff (what?), perhaps we should examine other aspects of the two, because if just putting on a bought costume with a push-up bra underneath gets you more attention than Yaya, there'd be a shit-ton of cosplayers with more popularity than Yaya.

This so much. who could be dumb enough to believe she makes anything? What rustles my jimmies is that she doesn't just come out and say WHO makes them. She clearly feels that part of her geeky gamer gurrrrl image relies on the fact that she has to be talented, which I honestly disagree with. Horny fuckheads don't care about who made what, why does she insist on being shady about it? It makes me, and others from what I've seen, think less of her. The lack of credit bothers me way more than her sluttifying everything up.

Bingo. Why feel the need to hide it when nobody actually gives a fuck anymore? Jessica never shows progress pics, and if they do they are hilariously horrible images of her sanding fiberglass wearing no protection. When asked about how she makes shit at panels or in interviews she blows over the question.

She doesn't make her own shit. Nobody cares that she doesn't make her own shit. We just care that she is lying about it.

As for people thinking that Yaya doesn't make her own shit, she has been cosplaying for over 14 years. Even if she doesn't make the armor out of Worbla or make the cat ears she sells, I fucking guarantee you that she at least makes the fabric parts of her own costume. Her body is too weirdly proportioned for anybody else to make her shit that fits her as well as all of her costumes do.

That's fine if she is still learning. We all start somewhere. Problem people have is not crediting the actual people who make the rest while she is learning.

She seems to think that it's not lying by omitting or glossing over who makes her stuff. That is sketchy as hell and IS actual lying.
By doing that she is stepping all over the people who actually do their own stuff. They learned their skills through tutorial, fuck ups, and thoughtful ideas. Pretending you are one of them is a slap in the face to actual effort.

I honestly feel like Jessica Nigri and what she does is a slap in the face to anybody who cares about things like accuracy and craftsmanship in cosplay. Now I understand that those two things aren't important to everyone who cosplays, but to the people who do care about these things, it sucks seeing somebody who barely does any actual work get free rides to conventions and free rides to Japan.

I kinda wish someone would take all her costumes away and tell her she can go to the next 3 cons for free thanks to her using her body as a ticket like she always does, but now she has nothing to wear.

She is paired up with an experienced cosplayer, someone not super known, but still good at what they do. The cosplayer will tell her how to do things but will not do it for her.

She can either choose to learn and the byproduct will be her learning how much of a leech she is by having people do all this for her. She'll also have a new respect for all these people who put so much effort in and just get eclipsed by someone in a bra.

Or she can not learn and just have to attend in a tshirt and jeans and consequently get no attention.

That would be an interesting show or article.

My mom, who sometimes helps me with fabric parts of my costumes (much better and faster seamstress than me) has been watching this show with me, and she loves it. She thought it was hilarious when the guy was in his hotel room saying, "in the hotel room finishing a costume when we should be at the con!" because it is almost WORD FOR WORD what happened to me at my first (and second...) big con. The show portrays -some- aspects of cosplay incredibly accurately, in our opinions. But she also recognizes that the drama is contrived and stupid and she cringes along with me about that. Something I thought of earlier today which would be wonderful to see is a time lapse of ANY of the participants of the show while doing a full day's work of sewing and crafting. I love the random shots they have from different conventions, like katsucon.
I remember Yaya had all these camera people around her when I stopped to take a picture of her, so I moved out of their way so as to not get in the shot.
Next thing I know some lady is literally shoving me towards Yaya. Now I understand that they wanted some "floor costumer" who was dying to get a picture next the great ~~*~*Yaya Han*~*~~

I used to respect her costuming skills, at the very least, but she's done so much damage to her precious image that the only people who seem like they'll have any sort of interest in her are her obsessed fanboys.

I don't know if it was the girls from the show since I refuse to watch it, but I'll give the gist of what happened at the Megacon 2013 Universal costume contest.

SyFy was filming the contest, 501st was running it. All contestants filled out forms describing their costumes and waited in line outside the room on Saturday. When we were finally called in to wait backstage, there were two girls already back there being interviewed on camera by the SyFy people. These girls apparently didn't have entry forms either (their cosplays were the Rocketeer & Tank Girl). Only 1 other person was approached for an interview (a girl dressed as Dark Phoenix, the black cleavage-heavy version).

When the contest started, everyone had to turn in their forms for the judges to read for us onstage. We weren't aloud to talk. When those last 2 girls got their turn, they were given microphones and had onstage interviews with the judges that lasted nearly 5 minutes each. The judges also seemed to be familiar with those girls.

There was one girl who went after those 2 who apparently heard a lot of the backstage conversations. She was dressed as Jessica Rabbit and the staff was trying to rush her through as fast as possible after the 2 girls. She got no onstage interview either. She can tell you more, but I doubt she visits 4chan.

Anyway, the judges picked the lower rank winners really fast. But when it came to the Best in Show awards (the cash prizes) they took their time. The girls were given 2nd & 3rd place. 1st place went to the Dead Space guy. I'm not too sure about this, but there was a rumor that he was part of the 501st (who were running the contest BTW). After the contest was over, word started getting around about how fishy the contest was run and how the girls were with the SyFy network.

TLDR; The SyFy channel already had their finalists picked out before the contest started.

She's too embarrassed to do that. She spent years trying to get this off the ground and hyped it like crazy when SyFy picked it up. This is Yaya's pet project, she was the one who pushed the idea right from the start.

She was so desperate to be the star of a TV show that she didn't think about how she might come across.

People can argue about how much or how little it may have been edited. The fact is people now see Yaya in an even/much more negative light than they did before the show aired. She thought she'd look like a superstar and she looks like scummy trash.

Friend of mine was in the AM contest.
They had Yaya on the judges panel and apparently asked the other judges if they could let the cast win. Judges said no, so they made up fake drama backstage instead and tried to get other contestants to talk shit on the winners ("So, what did you REALLY think about the winners?").
They also asked if they could plant a skit in the World Cosplay Summit prelims (after the contestants had been chosen months in advance out of a pre-elimination round) and if they could let them win for the benefit of the show. The Japanese judges for WCS were appalled and told them no.

A judge does that. It's a bit brutal when it's a friend that you're doing it to, but there's no special treatment when you're a judge. I've been judged by friends and I've judged friends. You do your job.

The only reason anyone knows that she called her out on stage like that is because we, the viewers, know that she didn't do it alone, and that Yaya talked to her about the fact that Jinyo helps her.

As a judging method, asking that question is fine because then all the judges are given that answer, but Yaya is using it to see if Victoria would own up to Jinyo's work on the dress, and because of her prior knowledge she can mention that to the judges who can use that information as they please.

In many contests, and probably this one, it would disqualify Victoria from any craftsmanship award since she took credit for something she didn't do which was the major point of that costume and what WOULD have won her the award in the first place.

every cosplay contest i have ever helped out with or had a friend who was in it had to like, give full explanations 1 on 1 with the judge, say if they had help, how they made things, if anything wasn't made entirely from scratch, etc. a lot of times they'd even ask about their makeup and if they did that themselves.

so i don't understand why anyone is getting even slightly "wtf" at Yaya asking about what % she made. like, that's 100% normal.

Because it's drama. She did it on stage, the viewers know she didn't do it, and it's all about watch her reaction and seeing what Victoria will do while the show plays dramatic music and makes dramatic cuts of her being nervous, jinyo watching, and yaya waiting for the truth.

The goal is to get people to think Yaya is being mean/cut throat/bitchy/brutal for asking a question she already knows the answer to, OR for the people to see if Victoria will do the right thing and credit Jinyo despite all the shit she gives him on the show. Either way drama ensues.

Did every cosplayer there get asked if they bought the material for their costume instead of weaving it themselves? Fucking no.

I think the only thing that makes that inappropriate is that we all knew because we saw the chat between vic and yaya, we watched the dress get made and we then saw yaya call her out. For the audience at the show, they had no clue that Victoria DIDN'T make all the EL Tape and Wire for her outfit, or her heart disc, so what Yaya did was a safe and easy judging method. Poster you're responding to here. I've personally been in costume contests where "craftsmanship" is a thing they're supposed to be judging and they don't ask shit (big-ish cons, too, I'm talking Sakuracon, ECCC, and Blizzcon, the latter of which probably has the best cosplay outside of Dragoncon). So, sorry, but it often is arbitrary. I've seen people win a thousand bucks at Blizzcon off a costume they made literally not one part of.

>> No.7056244

>>7056228
I have not been to ECCC or Blizzcon but I've been to Sakuracon. I know they do craftsmanship judging prior to their costume fashion show/runway/whatever you wanna call it. And at Sakuracon they don't ask you on stage, because all that judging is done prior to the event.

You mentioned a line in your post and I assume it's about what constitutes judging craftsmanship. I wish I knew what judging was like at other cons that aren't anime cons, but every anime convention I've ever attended has a craftsmanship judging that takes place before the contest and judges deliberate then on who will get what for their work and who wins and who doesn't. The criteria is basically: What did they try to replicate, how well did they do, and how skillfully did they do it. Then you get into details and nitty gritty of how each part of the costume was made and approached. That's the format that I see all the time, and is what's normally used at every con I've ever been to.
