As someone who is not involved, it really just looks like the organizers got all foot-in-mouth about how to make the announcement.

If they had given the historical explanation the other anon gave up above, and then suggested that this themed meetup would be the perfect opportunity to wear all those lolita aprons and btssb/angelic pretty waittresses dresses, and thrown in that someone would actually be there to try and take photos because the said photographer is into photographing historical re-enactment, most lolitas would have gone ahead with it enthusiastically. They get to wear waittress/maido freely for once instead of being judged on whether or not it looks more costumey than non-themed lolita, and will get photographed for it? I can see lolitas lining up to do this.

Instead it looks like their announcement was to tell lolitas with expensive dresses to pretend to be poor, and then tell them that they can't wear their prettiest dresses because they have to pretend to be poor. I get that it's a joke, farming implements ohlel, but the basic message got across reallly wrongly.
