Secrets are up extremely early this week.

Royal party's are fine so long as everyone can dress as a royal, peasant parties are fine so long as everyone dresses as a peasant. Marking out a clear class difference between one person and the rest is just insulting.
The lady has to be 'fancy' while the rest have to be 'plain' because of course the unwashed masses are too poor and unimaginative to be able to dress up nice for an event.

As much as I adore Lolita, I get that sinking creeper feeling whenever I see a toddler walk by in a dress almost identical in design to what I'm wearing. For one of the organizers to say that the "strict dress code" was because another organizer did historical re-enactments and to make the photos good, they needed the strict code is... odd. I mean, they're missing a crucial aspect of the social history here. The servants of a manor would not deign to take a food break with lowly field workers and basic-ass peasants. As someone who is not involved, it really just looks like the organizers got all foot-in-mouth about how to make the announcement.

If they had given the historical explanation the other anon gave up above, and then suggested that this themed meetup would be the perfect opportunity to wear all those lolita aprons and btssb/angelic pretty waittresses dresses, and thrown in that someone would actually be there to try and take photos because the said photographer is into photographing historical re-enactment, most lolitas would have gone ahead with it enthusiastically. They get to wear waittress/maido freely for once instead of being judged on whether or not it looks more costumey than non-themed lolita, and will get photographed for it? I can see lolitas lining up to do this.

Instead it looks like their announcement was to tell lolitas with expensive dresses to pretend to be poor, and then tell them that they can't wear their prettiest dresses because they have to pretend to be poor. I get that it's a joke, farming implements ohlel, but the basic message got across reallly wrongly.

There was a Neo-Edwardian boom in the 1970s (which I believe is what proto-Angelic Pretty "Pretty" capitalized on) and this is the perfect time to spend $5 on some Gunne Sax and Jessica McClintock knock off bridemaids dresses circa 1978.

There's also a MASSIVE ren faire near Chicago and I know some of the lolitas also have faire garb. Another use for it.

Uh, neither of those are lolita, though? You could argue early lolita with GS and JMC, but most of their stuff doesn't fit into the early lolita/"Pretty" aesthetic.
Ren faire garb is definitely not lolita, and to be honest, most people flip over calling lolita a costume or having people "cosplaying" as lolitas, so I don't see how having people in ren costumes would really be acceptable.

You can make dress codes that aren't exclusionary. Choke's contest had entries of all styles, and it was fucking floral circus or some bullshit.

My point: if you want to have a meet up that effectively limits 1/3 of the styles of your fashion (and arguably a higher percentage of your comm), then just make it a small private affair with your friends; don't post it and then say, "oh, and to all of you who wear pastels: don't come."

The same comm had a gothic-only meetup in the past year and nobody complained. This is my comm, and if they'd had a private event I can guarantee people would have bitched about not being invited - even though it's probably the same people bitching that they can't wear OTT sweet to it.

It's fine to take issue with how the invite was worded, or the whole "lady of the house" thing (which they have since removed), but just to argue that it's too strict a dress code for a meetup is silly. If people don't have anything to wear and don't want to make the effort to come up with something, then they can just not go - and they can't say they weren't invited.

>> No.7049828

The issue for me isn't that there is a theme. Themes are great! They can be fun!

It's that they admitted that *their friend* didn't have anything to wear for the theme, so they made an exception for her because they "didn't want her to not come." But everyone else that didn't have anything to wear? Don't come to this meet-up! Not only is the idea of her being the lady of the house~ annoying as shit, it's pretty... how to put it... rude to be like "if you can't fit the theme, DON'T COME.. Unless you're our friend, tee-hee!"

>>7049395
>Um, isn't that the point of most historical reenactments?

There's a difference between actually dressing like a peasant and recreating their lives without having to actually suffer as a historical reenactment and "lol gaiz let's dress up in our fancy expensive clothes and frolic in the fields at lunch time! We're just like peasants and field workers!!" - On the event page they stated they were happy to lend clothing to people and help people figure out what to wear if they didn't have anything to wear
- As has been said multiple times the "house lady" thing was meant to be a joke, the joke clearly bombed, and so it is no longer happening so why are people still bitching about it
- At no point did anybody say the point of this was to look better than anyone else, at least no more than any other lolita meetup (because that is secretly any lolita's goal at any meetup, be real)
- People keep bringing this point up about how this is like "gross aristocrats pretending to be poor" as if a bunch of American lolitas (even if any of them are "rich") is equivalent to 19th century French aristocracy pretending to be peasants - I don't even know how to explain how ridiculous this is, please go back to tumblr with your SJW bullshit because nobody here is being oppressed. Caps? Because it's not there now.

The point of the "house lady" thing was to allow their friend to break the rules while maintaining that there was a strict dress code for everyone else.

And oh, come off it. It's not SJW to point out that saying you're having a "peasant party" while prancing around in expensive clothing is like 18th century (get your centuries right, anon) aristocrats pretending to be poor by wearing fancy-versions of romanticized peasant clothing. You got me, I put the wrong century. It's not the same thing at all, any more than dressing up like a zombie at a Halloween party is the same thing as being the victim of Haitian neurotoxins. Real aristocrats were in a position of power and that's why dressing up like pretend peasants is "gross." A bunch of modern Chicago lolitas having a themed picnic is not at all the same thing. It's basically a costume party - nobody is in reality, or even in pretense, being anybody's servant or laborer. If you aren't okay with people romanticizing the past at all, I hope you never ever dress up in any sort of historically influenced clothing or costumes (aka why are you on this board if you aren't a lolita or a cosplayer).

Anyway here's your cap. The organizers need to learn that they need to prepare for a shitstorm and plan ahead for more intricate meet ups like this one. The inside jokes thing doesn't go well with everyone...

I hate to go back on topic because this thread got so much better when it started to stray into pheasants but

>>7049701
Uh yeah? Are you going to have a replica shitfit on me because I said "Hey let's go thrifting for 1970s Neo-Edwardian proto-lolita stuff that could double as mori and otome!" Because other brands made that stuff besides Gunne Sax and Jessica McClintock, they're just the best examples.

>>7049695
Neither is peasant clothes or anything resembling maids... or mori or otome, which one of the organizers said were clothing options so... yeah. I don't think it matters at this meet.

>> No.7050984

>>7050974
Was it a public meetup or did one member get their nose out of joint? I thought the Chicago comm and its events were pretty much under lock and key because of past problems with creepers.

Hell, a few months ago aristocrats/ouji weren't even allowed to be members of the Facebook.
