reposting with a new picture

I want to do a Johnny Joestar cosplay for NYCC in October. I have an idea for the headband, cap, and torso section, but I'm not really sure of what to do for the pants. I've never made pants from scratch and really have no clue of where to start with these things. Notice how the pants and boots are like, one piece. there's not a lot of good pictures of his bottom sections so this will have to do.

Copypaste from last thread
Okay so in my search for a material to cover my wonderflex in all I keep seeing people say is Gesso. I'm not interested in how labor intensive gesso is considering the quality I see come out of it. Shit looks like painted over papermash with drywall compound imo. Are the people working with the gesso just shitty? or does it always look like that? I've worked with bondo before but that shit's kinda heavy.
Anyone have any other materials they use to cover Wonderflex?
I've been toying with the idea of using fiberglass resin, but it seems almost redundant in a way.

Ok this is going to sound like a stupid question but I'm still learning the ins and outs of sewing.

Whats a good fabric choice for lining? Specifically for an Alice and Wonderland type dress (image related) or would it even need lining? I'm starting to get to that point where I want my costumes to feel more polished and I know linings a good step but I cant quiet tell if this dress would even need it and if so what fabric to go with.

That doesn't sound like a bad idea. Any ratio that you like in particular?

I'm hearing you have to make tons and tons of layers with the gesso. Is there anyway to avoid that? or is that just part and parcel for gesso use? It's kind of why I was looking for any alternatives (even if the alternatives look more professional but require as much effort as a lot of sanding and reapplication and are potentially more expensive. i.e. using fiberglass or something.)

I'm trying to make Miria's santa dress from the Baccano! OP. It seems pretty shapeless, but how should I go about making the pattern/cutting this? Can I just cut a rectangle and call it a day or would that look bad? Also, is it possible to have the sleeves be part of the bodice rather than have a sewn-in sleeve? Probs gonna sound stupid, but my little sister has these wire halloween fairy wings that are covered in like pantyhose nylon and then airbrushed. The coloring on the flowers reminded me of that, so it might not be a TERRIBLE place to start at least in terms of construction and being "delicate" looking? A lining's main purpose is to hide the interior of seams. It also usually serves an addition purpose such as helping the garment slide on or providing opacity under a transparent fabric. It can also reduce clinging in items like skirts.

Since the dress is white, it's already going to be at risk for transparency, so make sure whatever you are using behind it is enough to hide your skin & legs when backlit. You can use the same fabric as the rest of the dress if you have a lot left over. Joann and the like usually have a specific "lining fabrics" section. These tend to work just fine, but are usually just a thin polyester. If you prefer cotton, that cheap kona that everyone tells you to stay away from works.

How smooth do I need the wonderflex before I start working with the gesso? Right now my WF has some overlaps in it that make it pretty bumpy. Do I need to heat those out before I gesso? or will enough layers of gesso cover that up eventually?

There is nothing stopping you from also wearing it again later to the big con where there are more people who might recognize you.

But to be totally honest I wouldn't expect a whole lot of people to recognize you even at the big con. VNs just have such a small audience compared to anime or console games, plus it's been half a year since it came out. Something like Grisaia might be more recognizable right this moment because it's fresh and popular but I hardly even see people talking about Rewrite anymore. This shouldn't stop you though, it's way awesome when the hardcore fans recognize you and talk to you about it but don't be disheartened if that doesn't happen very much.

I am making some objects using a 3D printer with nylon. However, I want these to be smooth rather than layered, like how 3D printing often results. I was thinking to just apply multiple coats of modpodge to give it a smooth, glossy look. Would this give me the desired effects? Can I potentially soak or dip the things in modpodge for a decent coating? Or must it be done in painted on layers?

I also need to dye this nylon to the appropriate color. Most things I see online are things that have been dyed before printing. Can I dye the printed object instead, before the modpodge layering? Or does it need to be before I print.

Hm, her dress looks like it would be tough for a first time sewer. It'd be either really difficult to find a pattern exactly like it, or you would have to modify a pattern (which is a lot of work and takes skill beyond a first time sewer). I'd start with a design that's simpler and has a pattern you can find for it (or something pretty close).

I'd suggest trying to work off of a pattern for the collar and pleated skirt for the first time, as opposed to making your own.

I'm not sure what the white parts of her skirt are called, but they're just like an overlay. You can attach the top part to the skirt to keep them in the right place, but don't sew them down at the bottom.

As for the hat, you'll want something with a bit of weight to it so it sits right. I would recommend making it yourself, since it's a really odd size and not something that's easy to buy in the right size/style/colour.

Good idea, but I'd tweak it.

First of all, make a center board out of something stiff. Card stock, styrene, whatever you'd like. The part about insulation foam is fine but do it with a saw or steak knife, sharp knifes don't work on pink foam, at least not as well as serrated Then sand, and sand, and sand. Seal foam with bondo, or if you're new, Papier Mache. Glue is too awkward and hard to form by itself.

Then paint, and do so in this order.

Primer - Brown Base - Color Coat - Topcoat.

Then go look up a weathering tutorial.

Don't get a tulle petti, as it can deflate throughout the day. Best is organza or chiffon. It looks like you're looking for a bell shape (not a-line) short petti. The go-to pettis for lolitas are Classical Puppets, from Taobao.

>> No.7042847

>>7042781

There are two kinds of petticoats - stiff petticoats made from net, which are generally not as good, and flowing petticoats made from tulle, which are generally better and will give you the more dynamic, flowing shape you'll need (since her skirt really fits her movement). Then there are two shapes - A-line (very straight and 50s-style) and cupcake (balloons out at the hips). You'll want a cupcake shape for her, but since her skirt is very short you're better off making one rather than buying one.

Try a Madoka-shaped petticoat, but less full and with no hem. http://doxiequeen1.tumblr.com/post/49389858251/making-a-ruffly-cupcake-shaped-petticoat-skirt is an AWESOME tutorial for this.

I would think that the foam would be absorbent enough that you could spongepaint on a rocky look. I think spraypaint would melt the foam, but you might actually be able to use that to your advantage if it does...if you sprayed it very lightly and unevenly, you could make it look more natural where it erodes. I'm not sure what you could actually coat the foam with that wouldn't crack if you didn't want that sort of texture, though...liquid latex, maybe?

If you are gonna try spraying it, just, for the love of god do it outside for ventilation, preferably with a mask. All sorta nasty brain-damage fumes up in there.

Help me settle my inner debate:
Buy or make a plain, black, two-buttoned blazer with shoulder pads? I need matching ones for a man and a woman. I'm not the best at sewing but I would try to be careful, and I could do multiple trials.

Also how easy is it to tell mistakes/uneven stitching in knitting? I'm thinking of knitting a cardigan but I've never knitted before, would mistakes be easily noticable?

For simple items like a blazer, I think you'd save a lot of time, money and effort by buying one. Thrift stores are your best friend. Blazers aren't very complex, so I'd think it wouldn't be hard to find matching ones online or in stores.

Okay, so I'm by no means an expert, and I did this in like five minutes just to try it out. What I did here was take some mehron face paint and carefully brush it onto my lashes, followed by a careful dusting of sealer. Unfortunately it feels a bit heavy on my lashes, but it doesn't look too bad.

But yes, I think coupling a bit of coverup with some falsies would likely do the trick. As for the heaviness, it's not so much uncomfortable as it is odd having the little bit of extra weight. I'm sure you could get used to it after a few minutes.

I don't live in America, our thrift stores are tiny and hardly used so if I managed to find one I'd still have to heavily alter the clothes to fit my size (I'm a size small or even x-small, but neither exist in this country). It might work for the woman though. I am not optimistic about finding one in kid's sizes for me at a second-hand shop.

So far when searching online I've either seen ones too expensive, really cheap looking (ex. shiny fabric), or they are the modern "really tight-fitting and thin" style. I suppose I'll keep looking. I saw some Japanese uniform blazers that were perfect but they were like $200...

Should I get a net-type (fishnet) wig cap, or a nylon stocking-type? I have a men's haircut, if that makes a difference.

>> No.7049630

>>7049603
I prefer the fishnet wig caps, no matter what hairstyle you have. They tend to have a smaller elastic band and are a little more comfortable, less hot and itchy than the stocking ones. But short hair will poke out of the top of the net ones a bit, so stocking covers better. They are usually very cheap, maybe get one of each and see what you like best.

I personally like the nylon ones better. They catch all the hair, as opposed to the fishnets. But yea, I agree, try out both. As for >>7049663, I don't really use the little pin things unless it's for a heavier wigs / lacefronts, where the wig will tend to slip backwards. It attaches your wig to your head, basically.

2 questions:

1. I just started using expanding foam for the first time as a crafting material. It came with the little tube to plug in the top and squirt it out. After I sprayed what I needed, there's still foam stuck in that tube. Should I worry about that? How do I clean it out if so?

And roughly how long does it take for this stuff to harden enough to carve? I'm hearing like a few hours to upwards of a day, I'm sort of confused.

2. I'm going to be genderbending a girl character. She happens to be wearing a mini-skirt. What might be some good ways to effectively genderbend that? I feel normal-length shorts might be a bit far, though at the same time I'm not sure if I want to be wearing booty shorts the whole time.

>> No.7049728

Well some people go as far as crafting their masks. I'm not sure how, per se, but there's lots of guides floating around for things like that. Paper mache/plastic/something of the like would probably be used. I personally have no idea I'm just throwing out blind ideas.

You could probably pay someone to commission it for you as well. It's just a mask, probably wouldn't be too hard for an experienced craftsman.

The M4 you could probably purchase a broken/cheap airsoft M4 or perhaps even toy/replica. Be sure to clear with your con if it's okay to have it as a weapon prop, some cons are very anal about that stuff (with fair reason, I feel). I've had no issues bringing an airsoft P90 with me into cons, but definitely double check.

I'm considering doing this interpretation of a female Luigi. The materials are fairly obvious (I have loads of royal blue canvas left for the pinafore) but: how do I get the hat and top to match, since the top will have to be a jersey knit and the hat will have to be something heavier and stiffer? Also, should I extend the hemline to below the knee to look more gangly and give a more 1930s-type silhouette (going with the overall retro cartoon vibe of the Mario Bros)?

Lastly, I want some props and accessories from one of the games, but not the Poltergust. Something from the Mario & Luigi games would be the most obvious choice, but I can't think of anything.

What should I do about colored contacts? I'm scared about getting them because I don't want to hurt my eyes or anything and I want to make sure they are my size and safe to wear for me. I need contacts that make my eyes cloudy like in >this pic. Should I go to an eye doctor or something about this?

>> No.7050579

>>7050482
Yes, do go to an eye doctor to get your eyes measured. Read through the /cgl/ contact lens primer: http://pastebin.com/STTr7AGc In addition to the advice there, some more - don't clean your lenses with a cotton bud, it scratches them to pieces and if you put it on your eye you can do serious damage. (There seriously needs to be an updated version of the primer, can anyone help?)

The best thing for cloudy contacts are these: http://www.foureyez.com/edit-contact-lenses/white-mesh-contact-lenses-pair.html Homestucks use them for ghost characters, which in the comic are shown with completely white eyes.

So, a friend and I are planning on making some masks for an upcoming con. We were planning on using this one tutorial for Zacharie's mask from Off, since it is pretty close to the style that we want, but it mentions a product that I'm not entirely sure of.

What would be a good equivalent for this? It's called 'Cola Plastica Universal'. I live in America, so it's not something I can find somewhat locally. I've read that spackle is similar, but wouldn't be quite as durable. Should I just go with that?

Sorry for the lame question, it's our first costume-related-craft and I want to be sure to do it well.
