The difference between the gosurori books and the otome series is that the gosurori books made the clothes according to designs sent in by readers. Sometimes the drawings look like they were done by 14-year olds, which explains why some gosuroris have some really dubious patterns, I guess they pick the best they like out of all the weird designs they get for that season. otome no sewing, on the other hand, is straight out lolita designs with some otome thrown in, and sometimes a brand contribution (don't expect much from that, but the rest of the book is good).

Where otome no sewing falls short is that I haven't seen kodona, aristo or anything remotely male-like. Both series are entirely styled for women, but otome no sewing is still going strong on the lolita and otome side, no kodona or long pants thus far.

It's not bad, but the sleeves are completely wrong. kimono sleeves hang down in a rectangular shape and actually come in/back up at the armpit area. Sleeve length is determined by the formality, occasion, print/style of print, and age. Your print would be fairly on par for an everyday women's kimono--a komon--which would have regular length sleeves like in the picture.

In terms of wearing the kimono, I'd recommend purchasing an obi board to keep your obi smoothed out. I'm also not sure how long you made the kimono, but usually they are one length and you adjust it by tying the kimono around your waist to hold it in place and then pulling up the excess fabric and letting it fold over the tie--usually so the folded over part peaks out from under the obi.

As a rule of thumb with the obi, generally the obi is supposed to be more visually loud than the kimono itself. For daily use, this isn't exactly the case since you're not trying to make a fashion statement or be over the top (don't want to stand out too much), but as you move more and more formal in the world of kimonos, obi are of equal, if not greater, importance than the actual kimono. It's not uncommon to spend more on the obi than the kimono itself, and when wearing furisode the obi should most definitely be the loudest piece in the ensemble.

Cont.

Now in saying this pattern is close to a komon, it's all going to depend on your fabric. If you made this out of cotton, almost all cotton kimono are yukata. Other types of kimono are traditionally silk, but may be synthetic nowadays. Summer kimono are made out of lighter weight silk, and I have seen winter kimono in wool silk. But if this is a cotton kimono, it's a yukata, which isn't bad, though most yukata are a lot more bright.

If you wear this as a yukata, you're pretty much good on the rest of the kimono dressing. If you choose to style this as an every day kimono, you will need a simple obiage (it's a thin silk scarf like tie traditionally dyed in the shibori technique, that is tied in a square knot and tucked in on top of the obi) and an obijime (thin cord that goes in the center of the obi). Also, be aware of the gap at the back of the neck--that is a key part of properly wearing a kimono, but it doesn't need to drape too much. The more of your neck it exposes, the more sexy it is--traditionally at least--so don't let it gape as long as a geisha.

The Wikipedia entries on kimono are good, and then I always recommend Immortal Geisha for kimono enthusiasts for help on dressing and such. If you're ever looking to buy a Japanese kimono, Ichiroya is THE place to buy from online. Fabulous service, I love everything I've purchased there.

But in short, it looks to be constructed fine except the sleeve design is definitely not a kimono sleeve.

thank you anon. I realized the issue with the sleeve after I compared it to some pictures. I plan to use this for cosplay so I think it should be fine. Thing is, I have no idea what type of fabric this is as my mom got it from the lady who she used to house maid for. I couldn't find a tutorial I could understand, so the one i used taught me a method of using 6 panels of the same dimensions to make it. I've been really working with what I have at home for cosplay, and this was the only fabric I had with a print that could be close to the print that Hikaru and Kaoru have in Ouran (I mean the blue kimonos, not the orange). In terms of sleeve length, I think they're fine as in the actual show, their sleeves seem to only reach their elbows. As for the obi, I only made that so that I could actually see what the kimono looks like properly worn. I'd need to make a thinner green one for the twins so thank you for the tips on getting an obi board.

No scans, but I just got Vol 3 via a friend and can post images of what's included. This is a spring & summer collection, the first two sets of patterns are designed to work together so you could make a whole wardrobe, in this case classic (maybe sweet depending on fabric choice) and sailor.

For a designer piece, there's a pattern for that weird long GRAMM dress, the one that looks like a tailored burlap sack? Yeah. I love GRAMM, but that does not excite me.

And part two: another sailor dress (that looks like the same pattern as the first one, tbh), seifuku-ish pattern, otome dress, bunny hoodie, casual skirt, bonnet and the same yoke-style JSK as part 1, fabric flower accessories, headbands and some fake collars.

Does anyone know which volume includes the Chantilly pattern? That's what I thought this was when I asked my friend to get it for me (I didn't know Vol 3 was out!)

It is, and it does have a coat pattern. Your coat is gorgeous though! What pattern did you use for that one?

Question to people who have sewn things from e Otome books, how short do they come out on you, and how tall are you? I want to know if I need to modify them in case they are sized for people a lot shorter than me.

Thanks! I used a heavily modified version of Vogue V1266 coat pattern, which was the closest I could find to what I wanted. It took me a while of messing around with a muslin to get the bottom to flare out right, but otherwise it wasn't too bad.

Not sure about the Otome books, because I haven't used mine yet, but the stuff I made from the Gosurori books usually turned out bigger than I expected, weirdly enough. I definitely recommend making a test version of your first pattern with a cheap fabric to get a feel for what size you really are in their measurements. Once I got that sorted, I would usually add 1" to waist length and 2-4" to skirt length and the fit would be fine (I'm a size 6-8 US, about 5'6").

Unfortunately a lot of the good ones were out of stock. Pic is McCall's M6442, got it for my SnK jacket but if you lengthened the skirty flare part of the jacket I think it'd make a really good loli coat. As it says on the package, it's a really easy to sew item.
