Lolita hair inspiration thread.

Getting a hair cut and I need some good photos to show the hair dresser for examples. I need photos of natural hair that has bangs with the longer bits to frame the face on the side, but general lolita hair thread too.

When I went in for my haircut, they told me that I should have the thickness 'point' of my bangs be about 1 inch from my hairline. I thought it looked incredibly thin like this, so when I got home I used the bangs I had as a guide and cut I think 3 inches in? I love how my bangs look now.

This is a nice video. It also isn't 13 goddamn minutes long.

Something that I'm not seeing in a lot of these videos is the biggest step beforehand- Sectioning off your hair. A lot of this is 'touching up bangs you already have'

You make a triangle with one point at your hairline above each pupil (it seems narrow, but your hair'll spread out) and the final point in the middle of your head at the distance you want. Start small, maybe 1 inch back, just like how I started. Brush your hair out, maybe even take a shower, and see how you like that thickness. You can always section out more hair.

Now for my sidelocks, I made a new triangle. The base two points were at my hairline straight above the outer edge of my eyebrow bone. I sectioned off this hair and clipped them to the length I like. I have curly hair, so I cut while my hair was dry, which I'd really suggest for everyone. You don't know how much your hair'll bounce up if you cut it wet and it dries afterward.

Don't cut your bangs straight across, hold your scissors up and down and cut parallel to your nose. I sometimes hold it at maybe a 30 degree angle since I'm lazy and a straight up and down sometimes takes a while. Choppier bangs look better on me anyway, since it makes it seem more at home with my curly hair.

You might think not to look at wigs since it isn't natural hair, but it's still a nice inspiration in what you like. For example, this girl here has bangs whose 'point' isn't very far into her hairline. Maybe an inch, and inch and a half.

Now I don't know if this one is a wig, but it's a fairly common sight for lolita hair. See how the bangs go deep deep deep, I think even to the crown spiral of her scalp? From what I've seen, bangs are typically thick in the hairline.
Mine aren't this thick in, I think I'm a little past the halfway line between my hairline and my crown spiral. If you don't know what I mean, look at short/guy hair that doesn't have a part. All the hair comes from this spiral at kind of the point of the skull dome.
I wouldn't suggest going this deep in first. If your hair is super thick it could end up looking silly and taking away too much hair from the rest of your head

Just remember, your hair flares out, so never never never make the base points of the triangle where you want the bangs to end up, because it'll flare out way past your temples and look ridiculous
That lockshop wig would make sense with the inside bangs starting at the pupils and the itty bitty sidelocks starting at the eyebrow

Also here's another video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFNDuUFL7j4
Instead of their fancy do-hickey, I bring a comb underneath my bangs to hold the strands steady. Don't cut straight across like how they do most of the video
at 2:25 it talks about what I mean with cutting at at 30 degree angle, though they exaggerate it to a 45 degree. I take much more much smaller clips much slower than the hacking they're doing here. But it gives you an idea of what it's supposed to look like. If you take it slow and don't cut a lot of hair at once like they are, it won't look so incredibly choppy.

Also you'll need to decide if you want your bangs to fall skimming your eyes, just under your eyebrow, just above your eyebrow, or fully showing your eyebrow, or short bangs.
The nice thing about bangs is that they grow back pretty fast, so don't worry too much about where they fall.
A lot of these posted are past eyebrow or skimming eyes, but sometimes I like to cut over my eyebrows since eyebrows are a very expressive part of your face

I'll post some shorter bangs now.
These ones are the same texture as mine, though the ends a little neater. If you were curious how naturally curly might look with bangs.
I'm blessed with hair that wants bangs- I've been cursed as a long hair girl with curly hair everywhere except for the parts next to my face which were wavy. I would try to get them to curl or everywhere else to be wavy.

but then I got bangs and all the straight/wavy hair went there. I'm very lucky.
This story about my hair might not be helpful. Sorry if it's just in the way.

So if you're not sure if you should go exposing your face or covering your eyebrows, just do both! Maybe rock the longer one for a bit and then cut it shorter, or cut it short and see how you like it when it's longer.

I like cutting it short though because I like every length, and that means I can wear them all while also being lazy about not needing to cut my bangs because they're poking me in the eyes

Eye poking bangs, ugh.

But it kind of looks like she went to the edge of her eye rather than her iris/pupil for the bottom points of the triangle. Though if you like this look, take note.

You guys seem to know your bangs. I'm planning on getting bangs, but I have no idea if it will suit me at all. I have very long, thick and wavy and sometimes a bit curly hair. I want these straight cut ones like in the pics here. Anyway, some tips before taking the plunge?

Will it even work with my hair? I have no idea how my hair is going to react to being "short". Am I going to have to use a straightener to make my bangs flat? Is it just a trial and error and is it okay to show a pic like >>7025497 to the hairdresser? Also one of my biggest concerns is that I'm going to look like my face is hiding between all the hair, and m hair is just going to "take over". I've had the same cut for the past like 10 years so I want some change.

Sorry for all the stupid question but I'm totally clueless in this matter.

Sounds like my hair but a bit less curly. You are going to need a flat iron, and it's better if you show the stylist pictures of what you want. Bring several of them and point out what you like about them (I want them thick like these, with this width, this length...).

Also, don't get discouraged because the hair doesn't want to settle and your bangs open at your part, it's frustrating but patience will set those in place. I heard blow drying in different directions before ironing them helps with this, but mine didn't take that long for me to go out of my way and blow drying them (I don't blow dry my hair anymore).

Pic related, my hair 6 months after getting bangs.

Bull. Hairstylists will do crazy shit to your hair. Find what you like and ask for it. It's definitely okay to show that picture to a hairdresser. All the tips given in this thread about how to cut your hair also doubles as how to request your hair to be cut. (eg "For my bangs I'd like a triangle section of my hair to go this deep and the bottom edges to start at my irises")

If you're worried about getting lost in your hair, have your bangs cut above your eyebrows. It'll really open up your face. You're going to be naturally pushing hair out of your face, so the hair next to your face shouldn't migrate over.

A rolled brush is also nice, bring it up under your bangs and roll them in. Some brushes you can heat, too, to act as kind of a curler of sorts.

Okay, I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel. I'll leave it at this.
Any lurkers, thanks for putting up with my dump and long-winded ramblings about cutting bangs.

As >>7026097 did, if you're worried about committing to bangs, grab some fake ones!
I think most people look great with bangs, and that if they don't, it would look better longer/shorter or with/without sidelocks or arched upwards, downwards, or perfectly straight.
Take a leap! It'll be fun. :)

I'm I-want-bangs-anon from here >>7025616 I wanted to contribute with pictures of examples with lolita without bangs so here I am. I'd also like to ask as how to cut the bangs. It seems like a whole science when I read through the thread but are there any special looks that would flatter my face? I guess the whole iris thing won't work at me sense I have very close set eyes but I'm not sure. Also, regarding sidelocks, would it look absolutely redicolous?

If I get bangs and it turns out it looks horrible, are there some cute tutorials/hair styles that would incorporate like braiding them away or something?

It really depends on the thickness of your hair I guess? I have extremely thick ass hair and I've just learned to do my own bangs because hairdressers always want to start bangs in the middle of my damn scalp and I'm like "No... no this will not look okay 90% of the time." an inch into the hair live is about perfect for me.

You don't have really all that closeset eyes, but you're lucky since it's less of a problem that way than if you were wideset
Go ahead, if you think your bangs are too narrow, you can always cut more.
My hair is pretty similar to yours in consistency and in color too, coincidentally. I gave myself sidelocks, but instead of how some straight asian haired girls do it with longer and longer hair connected with the bangs, I cut two curls to between cheekbone and chin length to frame my face. I don't know about you, but the hair over and behind my ears are very tight curls and prone to intense frizziness. If you're the same, make sure you grab hair above that section, the hair alongside your bang hair, for your sidelocks. My hair above the ear hates being short, and a little strand got in with my sidelocks. Ugh. Bad news.

Personally I think you should cut your bangs above your eyebrows. You have such beautiful eyebrows. You've got this air of ambiguous youth, where you could be a teenager or in your mid 20's and this maturity and wisdom. And a little bit of whimsy and silliness. And then your eyes and mouth bring it back down to make you seem kind of like a quiet girl. But that's enough about your eyebrows and face, I'm embarrassing myself

If you're the type to be proud of your freckles, which I think you should be because the're adorable and add to that ambiguous youth feel I was talking about, bangs will be fun because they'll but an emphasis on your freckles. Since your freckle-free forehead won't be there for contrast, you'll just look that much more freckly.

If you hate your bangs, you can pin them to the side just like with how you did with your picture here

>>7029931
That's funny, I had the opposite problem. They were terrified to cut any farther than an inch in. I wanted it in the middle of my scalp because when they cut an inch in, my bangs were stringy and weak and disgusting.

>>7025618
What dress is that? It's really cute.

>> No.7031160

I uh... I have a problem.

I really like side-swept bangs, got them, but my hair is so thin on my non-part side. well, I guess even with a straight part my hair was kind of thin looking on top. flat? Well at my temples I tend to look really flat and wispy, and I don't really know how to handle it. I started parting to the other side, but I have a cowlick that makes my bangs go left, so it looks... bad.

>> No.7031170

>>7031160
Use products that add fullness to hair. Use a straightener to style your bangs in whatever direction.

>> No.7031179

>>7031170
My bangs pretty easily fall to one side without hassle, I meant if I parted it the other way it's fucked. I was straightening and blow drying but half-way through the day my bangs would fall and flip, where they kind of stood up weird and then flipped to the other side... yeah it was bad.

What kind of products should I be looking at for fullness? I'm kinda bad with hair. :|

Thanks for the advice anon and very interesting regarding the sidelocks! I'll probably not get sidelocks now at first, but maybe in the future!

Oh anon you make me blush haha! That's so sweet of you! <3 I'm probably going to do as you said, that way I can just let it grow out and see how that looks. Pinning the bangs to the side sounds good too, thanks!

I have such straight bangs that I have had people irl ask me if my bangs are real or not haha. You have to maintain it though, I cut it about 1-2 times a month.

Just recently bought this, because it seems like it would save me time when cutting my bangs, and I also want to trim my hair. Still waiting for it, so it would be nice to hear if someone has tried it before.
