I posted this in the last thread, but didn't get to see if I got any replies before it dissappeared. I'm looking for a long-sleeve V-neck cardigan in light grey, with a thick/wide button-area like in the attached pic.

I'm also looking for a site that sells typical buttonless v-neck school sweaters in a large variety of colours.

Lastly, does anyone know of a site that sells red-tinted prescription swimming goggles? I've only found them in non-prescription so far. I was thinking about putting a layer of thin transparent-ish vinyl over top to make them seem red-tinted, but I'm not sure how much more that would impair vision.

Look for a bucket shape hat pattern, and ask your fabric store for the stiffest fusible interfacing they have. Iron it to all your fabric. You don't want a full circle for the wide brim, something a little less will work for your pic related.
Since it's a costume hat, you can get away with fusible interfacing and fabric. You may want to double your fabric in the crown of the hat, not only the brim. If you get a heavy enough interfacing, it should work. Also go for a non-woven interfacing, rather than a buckram/woven interfacing, to keep your fabric smooth.

I'm not a pro by any stretch, but I'll be awake a while longer, if there's anything you want to ask?

there you go anon, avoid what's on the right and do what's on the left.
you're good on having a small mouth though, just please don't smear some concealer on your lips and call it a day; you will look ridiculous. if you look at male lips, they're not necessarily paler than female lips, or even less full in some cases. what separates male from female here is that females usually have more prominently curved mouths while male mouths tend to have simpler shapes.

as for my question, this is probably a dumb thing to ask but would it be feasible to construct a cosplay of Canti from FLCL in a bit over a month?
It's not like I'm jumping into this with no experience or planning; I've already drawn up plans and made some small mock-ups of parts in cardstock, but I can't shake the feeling that I'm overestimating my abilities here.

Yay, finally an opprotunity to pass my knowledge of canti builds on! Okay i did mine out of eva foam and various fiberblass parts, and it took me a little under two months to do. I salvaged parts from a lot of my other builds and it worked amazingly well. For example, the helmet is actually a really large masterchief helmet from halo turned backwards and cut along a contour line. And the forearms are iron man forearms i kept from a scrapped project and then we just again flipped around and sawed up. I wish idve saved the foam patterns i made for it, id totally send them your way. But to answer your question, if you have a lot of time and energy to put into it, you could probably finish up a pretty good looking canti in about a month, if you hustle. And if you have any questions/need help with something, feel free to drop me an email, id be happy to assist!

They're called slashed sleeves. Look for a Snow White or ren faire pattern. Just add the rest of the sleeve on instead of the cuff, pretty easy.

Also if it helps, its two layers of fabric. One whole purple piece and one pink piece with "slashes" in it. Te slashes are just evenly spaced slits cut in the fabric, with the edges finished so it looks nice and hangs open a bit.

What's the best way to stop the edgess of fabric from fraying?

I've got some blue fabric with some yellow fabric cut out in a pattern and stuck onto the blue. The edges of the yellow keep fraying and I'm getting loose threads everywhere, which really stand out against the blue. Usually I'd fold over the edges of the fabric, but since this is a pattern I can't do that. How can I stop the loose threads from peeling off everywhere?

new to paper mache here
I've almost ripped up enough sheets of newspaper and am ready to apply (I haven't made the mache yet since I don't want it to dry out) so I have question about application. First off, how should I apply the mache on the newspaper? just apply it to both sides or one? Could I just dip it in?
This is going over a bike helmet with some cardboard standards hot glued to the sides- how many layers do you think i should do?

>> No.7016426

>>7016395
You can do all of those things!

It took me a couple of layers to understand how I work with paper maché. Personally I work with a big bowl with 1/3 filled of the paste (water and flour), so I have more surface to work with to lay the newspaper strip. I alternate doing different things as I use the paste because the strips soak up water faster than flour (so gradually you'll notice your paste gets thicker and the newspaper isn't soaking as fast, just add a bit of water and mix):
>dip one end and drag through the paste till all sides are covered and soaked, then pull the strip between my index and middle fingers to squeeze out excess
>when the paste gets really low, I start dragging both sides onto paste, make sure it is soaked, and then squeeze off excess

At least 8 layers will be nice and strong (especially if there will be protruding parts off the helmet), but just make sure to let each layer dry completely before you apply more layers. I manage to do first layer in the day and second layer in the evening on a good day. If it's cold inside the house, it'll take longer to dry.

Good luck!

Hey I didn't want to make my own thread.

My friend and I did a little quid pro quo and since he's starting to work out with me he convinced me to go cosplay at a convention 1 year from now.

I have never made a costume before.

I want to make something in armor. Originally we were going to go as Barry the Chopper and The Slicer Brothers from Full Metal Alchemist, but he changed his mind. Now we're thinking about going as either Demon's Souls/Dark Souls Characters (Oscar, Lautrec, Ostrava, etc) or as Hunters from Monster Hunter.

Pic related is the armor I'd like to try and make. So if anyone has advice, or resources they'd be willing to share I'd appreciate it. I'm pretty much at zero info on cosplay, but I'm pretty handy and have worked with foam and plastics, metals and shit before.

It's just an alteration of an existing pattern for a straight sleeve. Is that what you're trying to make? If you're going from the pattern for a straight sleeve then just cut where the diagram tells you to, and add space accordingly and make a new pattern from that. If you're just making your own pattern from scratch then take the altered shape for your pattern.

What >>7016690 said, basically you're making a pattern for a puff sleeve by adding bulk to an existing sleeve pattern. You would make the new pattern, gather the bottom of the sleeve and sew it into a cuff (or elasticize it), then sew the top of the sleeve to the armhole of the bodice like normal. The 2nd one is the same, but with the top of the sleeve puffy and gathered too.

So.. you're looking to make a Fluttershy plush?

http://voodoo-tiki.deviantart.com/art/My-Little-Pony-pattern-1-291118373
(along with part 2, linked in the description)
For fabric, I'd recommend either felt or minky. Since this is obviously your first project, felt would be a better option, for the time being.
You'll need yellow and pink, and I'd recommend some fabric paint to do the eyes and cutie mark, instead of sewing them on.

Print out the patterns, cut them out, retrace them on your fabric with about half-an-inch border along the edges (retrace as many times as the pattern says, like for the sides of the head, you'll need to make 2).
Sew them together inside-out. I'm assuming you don't have a sewing machine either (although that'll be really hard to do for a beginner on a small project), so hand-sewing is fine. I hope you have a lot of patience.
Sew using a running stitch (there are loads of tutorials on that) along that extra-half-inch of fabric, try to make the stitches small, neat, and straight.
Make sure you leave a hole, about an inch long (somewhere discreet, like the back of her neck or something). Turn the plush inside-out from there, then stuff it, and sew her back up as neatly as your can (you'll probably do a whip stitch, and that's fine for now, as long as it's neat).

I don't think I need to explain how to paint the eyes and cutie mark, but I recommend doing that before you start sewing, just be very cautious as to what side of the fabric you're putting them on.

What do you want to do? Change the mane and the tail? What you do with patterns, usually, is create a too-size paper version and then using that paper-version to cut out your fabric. Sewing the fabric together around the rim then flip it inside out.

Do you think that I could style the base wig for Athena Cykes with a Pumpkin colored Pippin Arda wig? Also that bang - does it need a frame/base or could I just style it with typical spiking products?

wig dye tutorial = mix ink with rubbing alcohol until it's the colour you want on your wig
spray on the wig
let it dry, wash out the extra dye in cold water, let it dry again. possibly spray it on again if it needs it. alternatively dunk it in a bucket full of the alcohol/dye mixture if you don't want to use a spray bottle.

you can dye a wig darker but not lighter. if you already know you're going to dye a wig, then get a white one since the colour will be more exact after dyeing. wig hair colour is added into the plastic as it is made, but this "dye" is like a coating.

Okay cgl, I'm in a pinch. I need to do thick vines for my costume and I'm dried up my alley. But I can't dye something white over pink fabric, that's not how fabric works. And I don't want to dye pink over white, because it means dipping the pre-cut petal skirt to match a pink, or to dye the rest of the remaining fabric a pink, and I'm worried about my accuracy.

I already looked up gradient dying, the problem is that you can't dye something white. :/

But anyway. I need to make some Xerneas horns. I want them to be as light as possible but they also need to be able to carry the weight of lights in the colorful parts. Why is the help thread so far down? Let me bump this.

I am working on building some light up Flandre wings, yet my electrical engineer misunderstood my original designs, so we had to accommodate some changes.

The wires. All the wires. I designed this with plans to have the wires run inside the wings and only hang out small holes with LEDs. This unfortunately did not work out, so we are now attaching all of the wires on the underside of the wings. Once everything is painted black, do you think this would be terribly noticeable?
I've considered giving it some artistic flare and adding some sort of texture along the top to perhaps balance it out and draw the eye away from the wires, but I can't really decide on what I'd like to do, or how I'd do it. Any input?

Also, this would have been a problem regardless:
The wires hang down to point the LEDs toward the ground. My plan has the crystals swinging freely rather than attached directly to the wing. They'll have a large enough opening that they can swing 'freely' around the LED. But even if I attach them to the wing with fishing line, the wires are still noticeable. I likely won't be able to mask them entirely, but if I wanted to make them as invisible as possible, what color should I paint them? Something neutral like a matte brown grey, so camera flashes don't reflect too hard? Black, like the rest of the actual wing? Or matching colors of the crystals?

(In the image, see the closest light for the wires I'm talking about; I don't have many clear photos of what I mean.)

Practice. And good understanding of materials.

For example, If I were to make, say, link's master sword, I'd make the blade out of 3 layers of sintra, with the middle layer wider so that I can form a beveled edge. The hilt would be a carved buck, cast in resin, to be used on both sides. The handle would be a dowel or a PVC pipe attached to the end wrapped in a covering material of some sort. And yeah it needs a ton of work for sure. Just getting the electrical parts installed at the moment. I'm 3D printing my crystals since I've got free access to that and materials, and don't have much experience with resin.

Me as Iron Tarkus, and him as Knight Lautrec of Carim.

So I looked up some tutorials and shit on how to build it and I'm confident I can, but I'm curious about general rules.

Making weapons and shit out of the same foam the armor is made out of seems like it would be flimsy. Are there general rules what materials can/can't be used at a con? If I make the sword out of wood am I going to have trouble with the rent-a-cops?

Any place where I can find a clear orb to make Nami's log pose? (left)
And any suggestions to a pattern or method of making Robin's blouse actually ruffle like that? (right)

I was trying to find like a toy fishbowl or round drink bottle or plastic ornament for Nami's log pose, but no luck in finding a suitable size.

For Robin's blouse, I was thinking of sewing a thin flexible wire into the hem and making the ruffle, since I don't think it would ever stay naturally.

Depends on the con. Metal is not allowed I'm pretty sure all around, but wood is just fine. I mean if the dealers can sell a wooden sword and you can carry it right out, then I'm sure you can make one. But read over the rules on the cons website. Each con is different. Like momocon is no metal weapon props, while dragon con allows it.

I've got nothing for the orb, but for the ruffle of the shirt, you can add horsehair braid to the hem. Lots of cosplayers use it to make skirts ruffle and it should have the same effect on the shirt.

Look in the xmas section of Michaels/Joanns/Hobby Lobby for small clear baubles where the top hook pops out. Or I know Michaels specifically has packs of clear bubble thing in the floral/wedding sections but they have a seam and you'd have to drill in a hole. You'll have a lot of extras but better than paying for a single one from some specialty plastics place.

Look for dark tshirt transfer paper. A windbreaker shouldn't melt as long as the iron isn't on for too long. Or do what >>7023495
said and sew it onto the jacket with a zig/zag stitch or fabric glue. Through the edge of the cotton would need a little Fray Check or a little bit of glue on the edge to keep it from fraying. Make sure the image is a really high resolution while printing.

Look up Sarcasm-hime's sword making tutorial if you want to look into wood. It's my personal favorite. Chioky's katana tutorials if you're making katanas. Though I don't recommend his method of tracing hte curve with a pvc pipe. Trace a display katana or a boken.

Non-shiny/thick knit spandex would be my first suggestion, but it can be tricky to work with if you're starting out. But it drapes really nice and doesn't wrinkle. Otherwise a lot of things can work as long as it isn't thin quilting cotton. Satin, thick knit, microsuede or gabardine maybe. Go to your fabric store and give stuff a feel, crumple it up to see how it wrinkles. If you're going to Joann google coupon they almost always have 40% off.

I have a question geared towards those experienced in purchasing lolita as an oversea customer. I recently purchased a dress from Mary Magdalene (Kopinu georgette dress) and paid through paypal, but I didn't receive an email response on whether they received payment or not. This is my first time purchasing lolita and I'm not sure how the process goes in terms of communication. Is it normal to not get a response? I emailed them awhile back and haven't gotten a response. I just want to make sure I receive the dress.

I wanted to cosplay in the school uniforms from Madoka Magica because they seemed like a formidable challenge. most of the madoka uni's I've seen that looks nice are made of s knit. Make the cream part a knit, with the cuffs attached and wear a white shirt under. You could also potentially make it all one piece and put a zipper up the back.

Just wondering, but where are you guys from? I don't think the slow shipping is entirely Arda's fault but more your postal service unless they sent out your order really late.

I'm from Canada and even with customs and the like, I've always gotten my wigs under 2 weeks with the cheapest international shipping. They've also always shipped out my order either the day of or day after ordering (and my friends and I have ordered 5+ times).

or not even "easy" but "doable" for a someone who hasnt done much metalworking?

Okay so in my search for a material to cover my wonderflex in all I keep seeing people say is Gesso. I'm not interested in how labor intensive gesso is considering the quality I see come out of it. Shit looks like painted over papermash with drywall compound imo. Are they just shitty? or does it always look like that? I've worked with bondo before and that shit's kinda heavy.
Anyone have any other materials they use to cover Wonderflex?
I've been toying with the idea of using fiberglass resin, but it seems almost redundant in a way.

Ok this is going to sound like a stupid question but I'm still learning the ins and outs of sewing.

Whats a good fabric choice for lining? Specifically for an Alice and Wonderland type dress (image related) or would it even need lining?
