Yush, getting an Isabelle (AC:NL) cosplay together

>How drunk will you get?
mildly, nothing serious. Got some peach schnapps and excited to try some drink recipes

I'm excited for my free Nerf Gun and all the programming, as usual.

I'm conflicted. I've always wanted to check this con out, but I'm worried about running into ex-friends who are going - the type of people who go to cons for the parties, binge drink, start fights and ditch friends if it means a shot at cosplay fame. I'm sure you all know the type.

How big has the venue gotten? Is it easy to make friends there? I want to party without my social anxiety/spaghetti getting in the way. :(

They just moved to the Toronto Japanese Culture Centre so it should be a lot bigger than the last place, though the nearest hotel is a 5-10 min walk away. They're offering a $99/night rate though for APOP attendees.

Aw yee I'm going

I'm pretty excited, APOP is definitely my favourite con for programming. I usually am never interested in any panels at cons, but at APOP I was conflicted cause so many things I wanted to do overlapped. The people who come up with the activities are great.

I'll be going as Sailor Mars along with some seagulls, Marceline with my bf, and a Redead

The con programming at best was poor at best. The best show was probly the ghibli slide show. I'm glad they moved the djing saturday night indoors since the weather got colder. Overall good APop but came with issues:

Pros:
-Much more accessible/closer to downtown
-Free Noodles... and you could keep going for free noodles as long as they kept making and serving them.
-Free Pancakes, see above.
-a great variety of panels (though not too interested in many.
-Good features such as the Ferris wheel, the animals, and more.
-Gaming room had a good arrangement and was of a great size.

Cons:
-Hotel and JCCC were too far apart
-Ferris Wheel originally was nice with how well you could see your surroundings for the most part (not counting the sheridan itself) when I rode it last year. This year two buildings at least were partly obstructing the nice view one normally gets of the city when on a ride like that imo.
-Too many events focused on speed friending/speed dating. Would rather have that focused on panels about the actual topics themselves.
-Dealers was kinda meh. No one even selling any anime I think, which I would think by the third year they would get one of them to come.
-Closing ceremonies outside -_- could have easily used the auditorium...

My turn

Pros:
- Good location
- Ferris wheel and bouncy stuff was fun
- Pretty creative panels
- The deaf dog, what a cutie
- Gaming room had Project Diva F and Duck Hunt, enough said
- $99/night rate at the Don Valley Hotel

Cons:
- Should've had a shuttle bus going between the hotel/con
- Too many ravers and not enough anime fans
- Artist Alley sellers got shafted and put upstairs
- Some places were really crowded, could've opened some rooms to allow more seating space
- Ferris wheel wasn't running every time I saw it
- Most of the speed friending was put in a hallway and not in a room

The guys or the girls?

I didn't really pay attention to the guys. They seemed like your generic awkward con guys.

The girls ranged from ravers to really nerdy girls to serious cosplayers. There were 15 girls there. You had 3 minutes to talk to each one of them, and then you would give them scores on a question survey (just to help you keep track). The questions on the survey were pretty tacky though. I met up with a few of the girls later and they cool.

That dog was pretty chill. It was wandering around the Nerf Gun fight and just didn't give a fuck when a nerf bullet would bounce off him.

Pros:
-Awesome as always programming
-New location was about 8 minutes from me
-Burlesque was a lot better this year
-Some vendor rented lazertag guns for a $1 an hour, the whole venue was a lazertag playground which was really fun to play with strangers
-All the free stuff from workshops, pancakes, noodles, nerf guns etc.
-Nerf gun fight was really fun!
-The pork buns sold at the venue were actually amazing.

Cons:
-Literally all of the panels and activities started late, like a good half hour late or more for some of the playground stuff. It really screwed up scheduling because by the time an event finally started, another event was scheduled to start somewhere else
-ALL OF THE TRICYCLES WERE BROKEN IN THEIR OWN WAY by Sunday.
-Hotel too far
-Not many cosplays, after seeing the turnout Friday, I decided it wasn't even worth it to cosplay the other days
-Ravers littering and just being disrespectful. I was pretty irritated they would draw on the walls outside the cultural centre. Like fuck, show some respect.
-Programming didn't show the hours of operation for the playground, I was planning on going to the ferris wheel Sunday but it was taken down by then.

APOP overall was still a blast despite a couple setbacks. Still no candy apples.

Pros:
+yummy food at the venue, $2 beef riceballs were the best
+lots of amazing panels as always, ended up getting 2nd place at Anime Name that Tune (was supposed to be 90s name that tune but host was wounded)
+everything was spaced out, no real crowd problems
+burlesque as always my favorite part
+actually free DDRExtreme (last year was not free)
+3 days instead of 2 spaced everything out better
+Gaming was in a nice location, dark inside, away from everything else
+workshops for making your own plushies was fun as hell

Cons:
-no other food within walking distance other than what was at the JCCC
-best programming was later at night, which overlapped a lot
-like Dill said, very few panels started when they were scheduled to
-panelrooms were all over the place, since the rooms at the JCCC are all spaced out
-would have rather had vendors in a room vs throughout the halls
-AA seemed really quiet
-distance from hotel, yes it was only a 10 minute walk, but having everything at the Sheraton was really nice
-nowhere for people to sit around other than the courtyard area, and you'd better hope a panel isn't happening there
-parking lot for rides was TINY compared to last year, no spider ride

The blanket fort was the most hilarious event to occur but so it goes. I feel bad for the damage done to the zen garden :(

If you walk down to Don Mills and walk a block north, there's a strip mall with a bunch of restaurants. There's also a No Frills around there somewhere IIRC

I went with a group to a really decent AYCE sushi place across from the Science Centre. Couldn't have been more than 15min away on foot

I think next year the con should make a little section of restaurants in the area because that seems to have been a common complaint.

This.

Did some weaboo sit on something?

I was there running around taking photos and videos and stuff. You definitely saw me taking photos/videos of stuff.

Pro
-There was a dog just walking all over the place, all chill and shit, being petted by basically everyone. Didn't know he was deaf until this thread
-Free stuff, didn't get free noodles though. There was some ticket system thingy although I did get free pancakes and bottled water
-Cosplayers everywhere
-Nerf battle was hilarious
-Met lots of people
-Game room was alright
-Took tons of photos and videos of stuff
-I love JCCC, it looks amazing
-near TTC access

Con
-weed, people smoking weed outside
-The lighting where the dealers tables were, it was horrible and almost everywhere else
-nothing but rave music
-the bouncy castle broke, like twice
-Ferris wheel was only there for like 2 days, or just Saturday
-Rain on Friday
-I heard the hotel had absolutely nothing interesting so I didn't even go and it was far away

No idea what happen to the zen garden either, I was only there for a minute.

JCCC probably hates APOP now,

I wonder where they will host this next year. They should just rent a night club. (I'm kidding. Well, half kidding.)

They were selling booze at the rave. It was amazing.

It would be 18+ and all of the raving kiddies would be tripping

yeah I wonder too, JCCC must have been pissed

Is it normal to get drunk on American cons? I haven't been at a single con in europe where you wouldn't get kicked out as soon as you even pull out a can of beer.

Also, why does everybody talk about having sex at cons? To me it looks like all girls either already came with their boyfriends or are too autistic for sex.

>> No.7020546

>>7020538

people get drunk at any con, maybe not inside if there isn't a bar but surrounding restaurants and bars, they would.

I'm just trying to think of what venue would be able to host this. It has to be a relatively cheap venue (to rent) that's far away from the residential area, and it has to be able to handle drunk ravers.

This is a Canadian con. Canada is a little country south of the United States.

I said America. This includes Canada if you weren't aware of that.

Generally when people say America they only refer to our big neighbour to the south, the USA.

It was a joke. Canada's not south of the US.

Anyway, as far as this con goes, they check your bags for alcohol. You can show up drunk, (they encourage you to show up drunk actually) but you can't bring booze in.

>why does everybody talk about having sex at cons?

IDK.

>To me it looks like all girls either already came with their boyfriends or are too autistic for sex.

Well, not all of them. You just have to find the right ones.

was impressed with the amount of actually attractive people at this con. i expect its because in all honesty, its not an anime con. its more of a nostalgia-and-weird-nerdy-shit con. so all the people complaining about the dealers room not being big enough, or there being burlesque (which WAS advertised BTW and was scheduled for NIGHTTIME because its for an older audience..) or having too many interactive programming as opposed to just panels where somebody talks AT you, keep in mind that this con is NOT AN ANIME CON.

i LIKE apop because they do shit DIFFERENTLY. they are their own type of event that just happens to have *some* of what other cons have, therefore attracting some of the other cons' demographics. nuff said.

10/10 look forward to next year (and all it's hot babes)

also, i heard they werent kicked out of last years venue, but that the venue just wanted more money (money that would be better put towards programming and free food).

Hear fucking hear.

I don't exactly know what APop is trying to go for (and I don't think they do either) but it's different from what everyone else is doing. It feels like if a couple guys from Burning Man came up with an idea for a con

I heard of another theory from another con staffer while I was there at the time. The hotel intended to build a restaurant where the parking lot was so the con had to go. The other reason was the widespread drug use at the con.

Eitherway, the JCCC was a good location for me since I live in the East end of Toronto. I hope the rumours about Apop getting kicked out aren't true. Even with all the vomit, bad smell and all the drugs and booze.
