I'll be the unpopular opinion and say that I think they're pretty cute overall, but I wouldn't call it lolita.

I really like the vibrant colors, and I think that's what tips me over to say I like it.

This. Or, they could have done various substyles if needed. Some of those might look good as fairy kei ensembles with some work...

Fuck most kinds of cosplay lolita though. Naruto, KH, and so many more just turn out fugly.

This. Also aesthetic wise, the nicer looking ones are the Twilight and maybe the thing I'm assuming is Derpy Hooves. Everything else looks like it's a hideous Milanoo train wreck.

While were on the subject, have there been any lolita inspired cosplays that actually look good? I usually only see the nicer ones that have been made using things from existing brands, but I don't think I've ever found anything that's been made from scratch that didn't make me cringe.

Years and years ago I did several themed "lolita" characters, I had people come to me and tell me I had inspired them to do the same for their favorite characters. Maybe we were ita as fuck but it was still really nice.

This was before I really understood lolita well though, and now I'm always a little embarrassed to admit I did this, especially to other lolitas.

Rarity, RD and Derpy Hooves actually look like stereotypical prostitutes too though. Fluttershy looks like she got lost from a half-assed maid cafe, AJ is medicre. Twilight is the only one who looks slightly out of place.

On that sort of note I think there's a great foundation here for a group to get custom fabric with prints made with MLP symbols but maybe to mimic well known prints?

Cause I agree that the girly aspect of MLP could be well represented with sweet lolita and different styles of accenting the dresses to imply each ponies personality.

This is the kind of problem people have when they make Lolita based on damsons. They always make if look like a costume. It kind if kills the "Lolita isn't a costume"

You could easily pull off outfits inspired by each of the main characters. An apple print country outfit for AJ. A nice classic book print for Twilight. A candy print ott sweet outfit for Pinkie. I could even imagine some cute little bubble print for Derpy. RD would be better off in something like maybe a pop kei outfit.

I agree with the pinkie one. I would have liked more balloon motifs and a mostly monochrome pink + dark pink colorscheme with just a couple of blues and yellows.
How would you change the AJ one, though? Just change the color of the blouse and tights?

On the topic of AJ lolita coords, I never know whether I'd prefer a pastel rainbow or a saturated rainbow.
Pastel is certainly easier to find the pieces for, >>7006469 like this one (I have a second RD if anyone wants to see a second interpretation), and saturated sometimes comes across tacky and too rainbow brite.
But It isn't completely character accurate.

I'd like to see someone do more of a thoroughly punk lolita for Rainbow Dash. The problem is that it's such a crapshoot hit or miss with punk lolita.

Not the anon you're talking to, but I'm down in SoCal as well. A fashion inspired pony group would be pretty fun, and make for some more variety as far as human versions go.
I've always wanted to do a Mori Girl look with Fluttershy, but I need to do some more research on that.
