It would be nice to see more good male cosplayers get some attention, but to be honest I rarely see males trying that hard anyway. At all the cons I go to, I'd say about 80% of the people cosplaying are female, and the ones who are male don't exactly try that hard (half-assed craftsmanship, mostly store-bought, unstyled/no wig, etc). Of course it doesn't help that the majority of good con photographers are drooling neckbeards, but I think the main issue is that there aren't enough quality male cosplayers.

Is this really that surprising though? Playing dress-up is something that girls are raised to do while boys are raised to play sports and whatnot. Cosplay is a hobby that plays directly into how girls are raised so they enjoy it more, while the males take advantage of it by giving the sluttier cosplayers more attention.

This is pretty true, I think. Bear in mind I'm making a HUGE generalisation here, and I'm not suggesting it's universally applicable, but in my experience it tends to be females care more about things like making a costume thsat looks good and fits well, sewing, hair styling and makeup while the males seem to care more about making awesome props and armour etc.

Even though they probably involve a similar amount of work, it's the former that looks more visually appealing at the end of the day. Cosplayers appreciate the effort that goes in to prop making but basically everyone else doesn't give a fuck.

As a male photographer myself, ill give my opinion.

Going to cons I usually take more of girls just because that is what appeals to me. Im attracted to girls and it the most pleasurable towards my eye which then leads to me thinking it will be a good picture. I only ever take pictures of guys when it's something I relate to e.g. A film or a game etc.

Dont get me wrong, I was at Comic Con andIve seen so many great male costumes and admire you guys for it.

There is a much more simple explanation for why more people are attracted to women. The global population is irrelevant here since most are not involved and do not care about cosplay. What matters is the population that not only goes to cons, but all people who are into anime/comics/games that look at pictures on the internet. I can guarantee you that this population is far more unbalanced than the global population. Just look at the content distribution for proof. For every fujoshi pandering show, there are about 5 that pander to males.


As for why girls have more criticism:
-Males are mad they get an almost free pass for attention and in general better character choices.
-Women are really mean to each other. Just take a look at /cgl/. This board will hate popular girls because they are jealous and they will mock the ugly ones to make themselves feel better. The only way for a girl to win is to be somewhere in the middle where no one notices you.

That's cause the vast majority of male cosplayers are not attention whores with possible daddy issues. Why do you need a bloody fan page? You should already know the details of who you are cosplaying, there all in the original work you are cosplaying from.

Now for the 12 years I have been attending cons I can affirmatively say that the number of cosplayers in most major events are in fact 50/50 M/F, that's clear to me. Also the number of good cosplayer from both those group have been more or less even, in fact most of the best cosplayers I have seen have been men, but is often do to them getting both the costume and the personality correct. Also, it is about even between genders in terms of who makes and who buys, and most costumes have had a grandparent's hand involved from what I have seen.

To answer Op's question, The female cosplay seen is filled with self absorbed cunts that must eat one another to fill there mostly empty lives with a vague sense of self worth. Cosplaying should never be about you, but about who you are cosplaying. Sadly to many have forgotten this.
