Question about cosplaying exiles
Morphmask over face, or not? This PM at AX was cute as hell because the lack of covering allowed her eyes to be expressive, but on the other hand I have never ever seen anyone else do a good exile cosplay with partial face uncovering. I've only greyed up once and that was using Ben Nye cream liner I think, in Cadaver Grey. I sealed at least a few times, both with sealing powder and sealing spray. By the end of the day, while the grey was a bit hard to remove, it did gradually get removed from my hands, since I was holding things a lot (namely a prop of mine, but still). This makes me worried that there are bits of grey everywhere back at the con I greyed up at. Obviously not all over the place, but... still, imagine being a store owner and finding tiny traces of grey makeup on door handles and the like.

On top of that, though my lips were sealed, it came off pretty quickly. Did I just really not seal that well or no matter how well you seal some bits will still rub off?

If youre worried about using all your powder just use baby powder. I didn't think it would work either but its amazing. Put a shit ton on like you just had the crack party of a life time then "pap" it off with a 'puff puff' which is what i call that circle pad you buy with ben nye stuff (for lack of a better name). I was so sealed after i did that i carried and hugged a white plush all day and not a single spot of grey was on it. Now that i think about it i dont think my lips or hands rubbed off either.

Ben Nye is absolutely TERRIBLE for sealing. I use it on my face but I never never never use it on my hands. The one time I did it was hell. I suggest either heavily laying on the powder and touching nothing, or switching to PAX or arm socks for your hands.

Make sure you use non toxic acrylic paint, and the most common is a 1:1 ratio of Pros-Aid to paint.

It CAN work on the face, I've seen it done, but it peels at creases and you have to scrub to get it off, so over all having it on the face is less than preferable. But it does peel off instead of rub, so virtually gets on nothing, other than pieces than kinda look like eraser bits.

It tends to come off of my fingers a lot if I'm carrying something that will cause friction, like a bunch of bags or a cardboard box.

General rule of thumb for hats or helmets on trolls is that there should actually be holes (or if it cannot be done, then some black to give the illusion) in them for the horns to go through rather than just sticking them onto the hat / helmet, right?

Okay now, I'm going to use this as an example
I've been cosplaying for a while, and there seems to be a very thin line between "Good" and "average" cosplays. The one on the right is great, no denying that- but the one on the left is simply lacking. Yes, wig styling does play a role in it, as does quality of the clothes fit. However, the on on the right, while good, didn't have a metric assload of effort put into it. He did what any good craftsman would do and made smooth horns, made sure they were completely white, made sure that the wings (assuming they weren't bought) fit well and were properly stretched, and that the seams were hidden. However, from what I've noticed, that's only really half the work needed. No matter how hard you work, if you don't look attractive + have your body fit people's headcanons (assuming that people even have a headcanon for that character, for the tinkerbull it just boils down to "is he attractive or not") , your cosplay will automatically be seen as worse, and that's the only difference between well-crafted cosplays that are "good" and "average", assuming that they both had the same amount of effort put into them and they both didn't fall prey to any of the typical poor craftsmanship errors?

Yes. It's actually less work to cut holes in things anyway - you can reuse horns you already have instead of making painting and mounting new ones, and you don't have to spend a ton of time fixing the bottoms of the horns so they're flat/flush against the hat/helmet surface (nothing looks worse than rounded bottoms of horns peeling up off the helmet surface).

I agree with you, but there is also the fact that the tinkerbull looks a lot more complete. They simply make it look like they're actually a character rather than a cosplayer (spare from the bit of black hair peeking out). The bro isn't bad. The wig is mediocre but it isn't bad. His badge is very apparent and he doesn't seem to be wearing any make up. The tinkerbull mainly hit me how clean the cosplay is, he also has those last details that make it seem more complete (lenses, the nosering, make up as well as a hidden badge). It is a thin line indeed, but there's more to it than being pretty.

Anyway on the topic of homestuck, the whole craze that was going on for a while with trying to make the biggest summoner horns was really annoying. I would upload examples but just entering their cosplay tag made me freak out so yeah.
Thing is they had this bulge they were walking around with at some con and obviously cgl went "oh HELL no", then someone told BSC and they were actually very polite about it.
Their cosplay, however, is incredibly unsettling and pretty bad.

Honestly I don't think it's so much the cut of your pants as the photography and the way you're holding your legs that makes your legs look so short. It's an awkward angle (but a great setting).

Try making the shirt and pants both more fitted to give you more shape - bring up the crotch of your pants, for instance, especially if your torso and legs are about the same length.

I like how you have actual chain mail for your headpiece, though. Did you make it yourself or buy a coif online?

She was godawful at taking critique not to mention chosing costumes at her skill level. As far as I'm concerned.
She didn't have any drama and wasn't a bad person in general she was (is?) just bad about her costumes.

There are just as many different styles of fursuits as there are fursuiters. The main difference here is that this PM hasn't covered her head in fur and padding as most fursuiters do to make the head proportionate to the rest of the suit (especially if the suit contains padding, which all serious fursuiters include), not to mention it is terribly hard working in foam.
Either way, there is no need to reinvent the wheel. This PM seems to have covered some sort of head in stocking or zentai suit material to match their body. The closest I can think of is Beetlecat, who does custom fursuit commissions and has been doing so for a veeery long time. She make a base mold in clay for various species and then cast a resin mask out of them, padding to make them unique.
You could probably skip that last step though, but it seems to be what you are searching for.

I wrote a long ass reply but I don't think you guys are as nerdy about this as I am so I will leave that be.
The reason is as follows:
Cartoony fursuits = easier to make
Easier to make = more people will make their own and comission = popularity

If you want a fursuit that is more realistic in proportion you also need to put a HELL of a lot more work into making the rest of it look realistic or it will just look stupid. That means, more expensive fake fur, following eyes, realistic textures and proportions.
To sum it up, smaller heads = a lot more work = a lot more expensive.
People like Beetlecat can take upwards to 3k for theirs.

Thank you all for your input I'll put it on again soon and see if it's the angle that was making my pants look too short but I will for sure make sure the tunic and pants are shaped to fit me better.

I bought the coif on amazon but I had to take a few rows off the bottom because it was way too long for me and I had to make the hole for the face smaller. Probably because it was designed for a man and I'm relatively small for a girl.

Hood needs to be darker, and the cuffs near your wrist are really lack luster considering the flare in the rest of the costume. Add something more to the pants too. I'm not sure if it's just the lighting, but some trim looks multicoloured? Yeah, scratch that, it looks tacky and get all the trim/sequins/what have you to all be gold or all be silver, no blue or red or anything.

Wait Anon are you saying that the chainmail needs to be darker? It's already a dark maroon color when it comes out of the spray can, if I go any darker it'll be a chocolate brown.
As for the cuffs I ended up adding some beading that looks similar to the beading on the upper part of the cuff.
Also the stuff that you are referring to trim is all glass beads which was done in a dark red, certain ones can reflect strangely when the lighting is odd. I based the beading off of rumminov's design which is done in red but I do wonder if it would look better in gold. I'm not opposed to changing the beading to ones in gold.
I'm not sure what I could do to the pants though, maybe do some beading along the bias tape on the side? Other than that I don't have any ideas as to how I would fancy that up as well.
Any other opinions, should I change it to gold or keep it the same?

Definitely just do... something with the darker sleeves and the pants. Right now you're so over the top with your cape and your shirt trim and your symbol and then the longer sleeves and the pants are just... normal? Idk it stands out to me.

Like I said the colours may just be the lighting. Personally I'm not too big a fan of it, but if it works in person, whatever.

Oh okay now I see what you mean, the word choice threw me for a loop yeah that coif is definitely getting touched up with spray paint this weekend.
I'm definitely gonna go in with some more beads on the pants when I stock up on the beads that I need. Like I said the cuffs are already done though, sorry for the weird lighting in the picture.
I might try getting some different beads though to replace the ones that reflect strangely plus due to wear some of the beads need replacing anyway.

I recommend PAX from hands/arms. NEVER use PAX on your face as it highlights wrinkles and your skin needs to breathe through the paint.

like it was uncomfortable and peeled if i wasn't careful
but in a pinch it seriously works just fine
you just have to moisturize, dry it carefully, powder it, seal it, and keep it off of your eyebrows

i don't exactly prefer it to other methods since taking it off is nearly an hour affair but NEVER sounds like an exaggeration to me

yes, moisturize the HELL out of your skin. i cannot stress that enough, ho-ly shit.
at katsucon this year i did default terezi but the shirt i use has a more scooped neckline so application on my neck, chest, and arms took forever
so you're supposed to apply lotion first and wait for it to absorb, then put the PAX on that immediate area
and i got lazy and stopped moisturizing
and my shoulders and upper arms were gray for three days after the con

so yeah, lotion is the best advice i can give you. humidity also helps, so it was a lot easier to remove at otakon than katsucon
just get some pros-aide remover, a wash cloth, and someone to help if at all possible, anon
