Follow up question about petticoats! I came here before looking for help on what type of shape to get for the costumes pictured, and ended up finding a few that could work. I'm really stumped tho- I've never really had to use petticoats for anything before and I don't want to mess it up.

I'm looking at Classical Puppet's A Lines, but which would be best?

What I think is their regular ol' A line,

Look for a flight suit instead.

For gradients: soak the piece in water while you prepare the dye. Take the piece and dip to where you want the fade to end, quickly remove and squish it around a bit to help avoid a solid line. Keeping dipping progressively shorter parts. Depending on the material, you might have to let the bottom soak for a while. Remove and hang to dry. Wash the excess dye out AFTER it has dried.

Seagulls I'm having a bit of a conflict.

Most of my costumes are of the formal-ballgown variety so I am most familiar with using bridal type satin. Yet today I am faced with crafting a Flandre Scarlet costume. I decided it would make the most sense for her character to also use quality satin in her dress. Yet then I have the issue of her mop hat.

What material should I make it from? I figured some type of cotton would make the most sense and likely be what she wore, but how bad would that clash with the rest of the outfit? What fabric would you recommend? (Also, since it's a hat, keep static electricity in mind.)
I assume I should make the bow and red parts out of the same red satin I used for the outfit.

Her white shirt, I plan on finding an old button down shirt and perhaps modding, so the shade/style of the white is still undetermined. But it will NOT be made of satin.

Pic related, it's her.

>> No.6956023

>>6955888
I'm making a Flandre cosplay right now as well.

Are you using a shiny or a matte satin for her red garments? Because I personally think that a shiny satin won't look that good with her character, a matte would though.

Cotton is definitely a better choice for her shirt and hat, or maybe a cotton blend if you want it a bit thicker.

Also are you going to go with the color scheme of many fanarts or her orgiginal artwork? Because in her game artwork her shirt and hat are pink and not white

As much as I would love to go with the pink, it would be extremely difficult to find a shirt in that shade of pink, plus matching ruffle trim to use. I did not plan on making the shirt from scratch, and I'd rather not make the ruffles from scratch, either, so I'm deciding to go with white. I'm also making the costume twice, since I conveniently left my materials across country and won't have them until near convention time. The skirt I made already has white ruffles attached. It'd be odd to do white ruffles with a pink shirt.

I'm using Casa Collection satin. Which is somewhere between matte and shiny. In some lights it will shine, and others it won't. But it is far from costume satin. I'm going for a slightly more elegant look than playful, so I'm hoping that translates well rather than "ew she used the wrong fabric!" I've used it multiple times before, so I'm not terribly concerned.
I'm also aiming at taking a bit of artistic license and adding some gold trims and ruffles around the costume, along with light up wings, so even if I end up a smidge shiny, hopefully the rest will outshine it, and keep everything looking alright.

I'll look into cotton blend stuff, then. Thanks for the input.

Fabric paint is tacky, but it's easy to make really intricate patterns like that with paint vs doing appliqué. Spring for silkscreen ink. If you want to get really intense and you have the skills, make an actual silkscreen of the pattern (you can put it on shirts after if you want!), but if not, you can apply it with a brush and it doesn't come out as thick and yucky looking as fabric paint. In the picture it looks like they have a black edge, which I like to do with a brush tip market or even a sharpie. (And I've never had a problem with either when ironing or washing)

Hey guys,

I cosplayed Annie from League of Legends last year as Otakon, and I want to go with the same thing this year as well. I'm tight on money and time so figured I'd re-use my cosplay.

I made this last year with the help of my mom, who actually made the dress using purple material and a used white dress-shirt. We used the sleeves of a pink sweater for the leg warmers and I wore plain black heels. For the backpack, we made pink straps to sew onto a pink pack, and then sewed stuffed animal heads onto those.

My main concern is that the pink kitty ears looked bad/cheap. How can I re-make those to look better? Furthermore, I want to use the time and little savings I have now to try to improve this cosplay. How can I make my outfit overall better?

(and yes I know my posing/expression is bad, I've worked on it!)

Definitely re-curl the wig. Depending what it's made of, you can do it with a curling iron or just standard rollers. (don't attempt to use a curling iron unless you're sure your wig can handle it)

I am slightly confused, are you trying to sew together the honeycomb shape on her legs? If so it will take nearly two hundred hours of work and a few million years of ironing to get it to look right. Most people have the design printed, or some people have the design sewn on.

But IMO, if you want to sew that honeycomb just make sure that it is even and ironed flat and it will look just fine. The pictured "bubbling" just looks like un-ironed fabric to me, and if it is stretchy fabric (goodness help you) then so long as it is sewn well and evenly it will look fine as leggings.

I used slightly watered down acrylic paint for this on my own wig.

The more you water down the paint, the harder it is to control where it stays but the more it will stain the wig rather than appear as a solid paint.

If you don't want it to be crunchy/solid, then you can use ink dye methods instead.

As for the ears and tail, just think of them as plushies: cut two ear shapes out of fabric, sew them with the "fur" sides facing eachother, leaving a gap to turn it right side out. Flip it right side out, stuff it so it holds it's shape and then sew up the hole. You can attach it right to the wig, or to a headband under the wig. Tail is basically the same, google will give you lots of ear/tail tutorials.

The costume may be horrid, but the advice is reasonable. You are welcome to offer other solutions on coloring a wig.

Would have been best to water it down more and lightly brush out any paint clumps that appear. If the first layer isn't dark enough just do more layers until it looks darker just don't let it look like solid paint.
If not paint then test out alcoholic pens ( ie.sharpie) on a bit of cut wig hair to see what makes the best colour.
Picture is the one layer of watered orange paint on the end of the fake fur after it's been lightly brushed to remove clumps.

Are you going to be making it out of lycra or the like? I really think your best bet is just going to be painting it on. Shove some cardboard in there to stretch the shirt + avoid bleed through and paint them on with silkscreen ink. It tents to stretch better than regular fabric paint.

Is the lamp ball-shaped or shaped like a lantern? (I can't tell from the pic)

If its ball-shaped you could try to get a huge plastic orb (the kind which is made of two parts which you can stick together; that way you can also put it on your head later). Saw a hole into the lower half the size of your neck (make sure to sand the rough edges so you won't slit your throat). Then maybe paint it with milky acrylic colors or window colors. I can't think of a way to make that lamp without being visually impaired while wearing it, so you'll probably need some help walking around the con.
Also, remember to put breathing holes in it (maybe on the sides or in the back so it won't be that visible). It'll probably get hot and humid really fast in there anyway when you wear it because of the enclosed space.

For the top part you could buy polystyrene from your local building center. Glue several pieces of the board together so you get the height of the thing. Cut a hole into the first or/and second piece of board (like a hat), so you can later fit the orb under that top piece.
Then carve out the upper shape of the lamp, throw some papier mâché on it, sand it and paint it.
Well, that's the really rough plan I'd have if I had to make this. Concerning making it light up... I have no idea, maybe LEDs?

One removed, get a double-sided mirror or something, to replace the screen. Use EL wire and EL Tape on the inside to light it up.

Cut a head hole, pad the shit out of the inside. wear.

I would make it as body-hugging as you are comfortable with. Have a bit of extra ease around the shoulders so you can move your arms.

I actually find stretch fabrics really easy to work with, but I know a lot of people have a hard time handling them. I find the worst part is ripping out a seam if you screw up. The bargain bin usually has tons of stretch remnants; get some and practice with it.

I think painting them wouldn't be too difficult, just a little work to look nice. If you want them straight and even, mark off one 'V' shape with masking tape so you get the angles right, then use masking tape to make the lines in one direction, removing the other side of the V as you go. Paint along those lines, peel off the tape, let dry (or heat set, whatever the bottle says) and do the cross stripes in the same way. Shitty drawing included to try and better explain whatever nonsense I just typed. If you want it perfect, use tape on both sides of the stripe so both edges are crisp.

Or you could just freehand it, but that tends to reek of first handmade outfit.

Alright, I don't visit this board often(/o/ regular here), but I got a question for you guys. On the 27th I'm planning on dressing up as Lt. Columbo. Thing is, I'm looking for a cheap wig(not looking to spend more than 35-40) and a lot of the stores in that pastebin off the front page aren't around on ebay anymore. Furthermore, I noticed a lot of my options are Chinese only. Living in Florida myself, I feel that might delay the shipping prohibitively. So my question pretty much boils down to: is there a trusty relatively cheap US/CAN based wig shop that stocks dark brown wigs like the unkempt slav mop Falk's got?
Also, I've heard of a way to make a cheap wig look not shiny with fabric softener or something. If you guys can post a guide to that, I'd appreciate that.

Hope this answer doesn't come up twice.
You'll need to make a bell-shapped piece for both sides of your head. Pain-free way to do it is:
Make up a mock hood out of scrap fabric, extend the ends for a looser fit (green part in picture), add a pointed back if you need it.
Attach to your coat with pins to see how it falls/ fits, then using your good material make up the real ones, decorate and then sew them on to your coat.
If you have more problems have a look at this blog post, it's for dolls but it's simple enough to follow and apply to your cosplay.

I've seen a few tutorials ( mostly Kamui's) that sandwich craft foam between two sheets worbla when making armour. I was wondering if this is necessary, and if there were any pros and cons too doing this.

I personally like the foam core method because it gives body to the armor and is light. By stacking something not foam, you run the risk of it just being heavy and less flexible.

Honestly, dont use worbla. Its expensive as fuck and theres tons of other materials that will lend just as good, if not better results. However if you must use worbla, dont double layer it, that will almost double your cost, which will be expensive enough as it is. If youre worrie about stabilty/strength, just fiberglass the interior, it would be extremely cheap, nobody would see it, and it would actually make it more sturdy than double worbling would.

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone would have any advice on Mimete from Sailor Moon's hair?

I actually have natural red hair but I wouldn't even know how to style my own hair like that, let alone a wig... I've seen some cosplayers just use light curls/waves, but I'm really not sure if that really achieves her look. Would anyone care to share how they'd go about it?

tease the fuck out of the bottom of your hair, lots of hairspray, use a heat protectant or curl holder for the next step. Use 3-barrel waver or crimper like these:

As you make the waves, don't brush them out, just hairspray them to death so you keep the wavy shape.

Thanks so much, that's ridiculously helpful!

I'll have to experiment with my own hair, although it could do with growing out a bit first (straight it just hits my jaw, assuming that teased and curly it'll be a bit too short). If I can pull it off it'll be a nice break from wigs.

And thanks! I love the Sailor Moon villains, got invited to a group and thought my favourite villain would be way more fun than a senshi!

it's a typical military style front closure (in design). if you want to go 100% to the design, I would suggest doing the shrug for the top and make a matching panel in that shape with button holes.

Sew the buttons on the front part of the bolero and then button it through the panel so it lays over the apron properly.

to keep it attached, I'd suggest doing clear buttons/small button holes on the top shoulder line to keep it in place, as they wont really show up

anyway, that's how I would do it. It did a real shit drawing that might (?) help explain this.

It's ironic because I think my hair will do really well for Mimete, but I now realise I know more about synthetic wig styling than human hair. Will post a picture in progress if I manage to achieve anything close!

yeah, sadly I'm in the states. can't wait to see pictures though!
if you do decide to go the synthetic route, Arda's wigs in the color Pumpkin or Light Copper Red look like they're on the right track. They're also heat resistant so that's great for styling.

I was doing a creepy doll prop for my Ib cosplay, and halfway done, I realized that the fabric was the wrong colour. Pic related is what I have because I remembered the doll as purple, but it's apparently blue...

Uhhhh dang maybe you can still use the body because I think the dolls wear a simple white dress... but yea the limbs and head should be blue... I don't think you want to spend time dying it blue.

Oh derp ignore the white dress thing. Just research the body color, I'm sure it can still be used or else you use something else to cover it.

Anyone around that might be able to answer this? I know /cgl/ is a slow board but I reeeeally dont want to delve into furry forums.

Also:
Does anyone know of a good place to get faux fur? I just need a couple yards of really short fur (for the skaven rat pelt). I keep finding things that dont look quite right, and its $30 to get it and find out its too long.

I found some blue fabric which should be enough to redo the doll completely. Ughhh, I should just quit whining and get to redoing the whole thing then...

A part of me wants to just use the purple fabric and wing it because honestly, it looks fucking purple in the game.

I just purchased some Tulip brand dye for the first time today as the color matched the one I needed a little better. I normally use RIT liquid dye so I decided to read some tutorials on the powder dye. Turns out that there are a lot of bad reviews for this stuff. Anyone used it before? Does it work as well as RIT or should I just mix some RIT colors to get my ideal color?

Looking for general tips if anyone has them for Seras? I am debating doing it out of cotton cut on the bias, since doing it out of a synthetic stretch blend wouldn't give the sharp military look she needs.

I would consider getting a longer pile on your fur instead, and weathering it since the individual hairs look sparse and not short. That's just me though.

Depends on what sort of fabric it is. With things like cotton the worst you'll get is seams that look awkward after washing/wearing for a while or minor stretching in the wrong direction.

I'm looking for a light red/red fabric for Bee's waitress dress from Bee and Puppycat. Where can I find a fabric heavier than broadcloth and Kona cotton, but not too heavy. Like maybe a light twill? I haven't found anything like that at Hancock, so I guess I'll have to order online. Any favorite fabric stores? Any tips on getting the right kind of fabric? I just need a little bit of weight to it and don't know the words that would describe what I'm looking for.
Also would it look awful if I used my shoulder-length hair that's the right color instead of a wig?
Thanks!

Basically I bought a skirt, it's perfect aside the fact it's way to short (Can see my pants) I'm thinking about buying one in a much larger size, and taking it in at the waist to fit. The skirt is designed like my crude drawing, the buttons undo and that whole front panel comes away. Would I just be able to move the buttons in order to do this or will it not sit right?
