Anon arranger here. I need some advice on do's and don'ts when it comes to guests. We are not very big but would like to invite more guests to an uppcoming con. What sort of condtions should they be offered? (Con ticket, logistic and etc. Ofcourse) Should everything be free for them (like food and such) and should they be offered payment for the performance itself?

Worst con: Probably Fairycon. It's small but it was terrible working there. They had no schedual whatsoever and made us work all the time. I was lucky I could get some sleep... They had some sort of guarantie for the visitors too so that everyone could sleep there (there was maybe 80-100 visitors) but they only had two rooms for all of them! And I'm not talking gymnastiksalar here. People were sleeping in the halls and in random rooms. They were lucky they didn't get reported.

Best con: I'd say Närcon. Since it's the biggest, but otherwise I'm not a big fan, I liked Uppcon a lot more. I'm not going this year so yeah. Otherwise I'd say Confusion or Kodachicon they're both very cosy. Althought Hampus seemed to get a lot of trouble (both technical and being thrown out while arranging Varulv), it was very enjoyable.

Did you forget all the "exhibitions"?
All around the con they had small pappers with a little information about something random japanese and a shit ton of pictures. They don't make any sense, there is like no one ever reading those things. They just take place, why not just fill it with random anime posters or something. I mean it's alright if tou display some sort of art thing or something like that. But I don't want to go to cons to spend time looking at someones dirty hellokitty socks that is part of a five items exibition.

I like the cozy feeling of it, and there is always something you can do if you are bored. I'm not into watching panels and concerts and so, but I love to go the the games and karaoke rooms with friends. Though they need to get better with the food

Worst con - i only go to the bigger cons, and they are all really nice so I can't say any here

Best part in community - like I said before. I like the cozy feeling swedish cons have. And that there always seem to be an activity somewhere you can join.

Worst part in community - that elitists vibe you get from certain people...

I never managed to find it though, that uni is confusing as fuck.

I for one hope the sleeping halls will work better this year - fucking idiots locked themselves into the bathrooms for hours getting dressed, and there were three bathrooms. Then one broke.

They should do dressing rooms, if only temporary ones by hanging fabric in the ceilings or something. And an area with mirrors outside of that.

Guest organizer here, I'm fairly new but this are the "guidelines" I put up for myself:
Do's:
>Logistics
>Hotel (if they don't want to stay at the sleeping halls)
>Food
Not so sure about the payment, most cons don't pay them but for example Japanese artists actually have a fee you have to pay for them to come to perform at your event (which is why UppCon was so expensive). Personally I think it's nice to pay a fairly new band some kind of sum because most bands need all the money they can get, but only do this if your budget allows it, most bands are very happy by you just paying for travel, food and somewhere to stay.
And always be nice to them, if a convention gets a bad reputation it stays, so even if they are a bunch of divas just take it easy and be nice (there is no "try to be nice").
Also, if the food where you are is expensive, offer yourself to pay for dinner once a day instead of all three meals a day.

Don't
>Give them everything they want, you are not a doormat, some bands/guests ask for alcohol and that is a big NO.
>Let them be dicks to other personnel, if they are you gently tell them to stop, this reputation thing goes both ways.
>Pay for unnecessary things, if they for some reason ask for a blow-up pool and you feel it is a really stupid thing to get them then it probably is.
And don't let them do whatever they want, they are guests and should act like it, if there is something they do that is not allowed or that you are not happy with - tell them!

Make sure to give all members of the band/guest/whatever their schedule (time for rehearsal, soundcheck, performance, etc.) and remind them of these times one hour before they happen, and then half an hour before and then 10 minutes before. Also give them the phone number to the organizer and phone/address to the hotel.

>I hope this helps

>> No.6948475

Thank you. It's good to have sort of inside information so I can know what guests tend to expect. The no-alcohol rule sounds very good, thank's for the help.

Hopefully there will be somewhere there I can get changed easily (Which it ain't gonna be anyway because I have a pair of wings on one of my cosplay that I will need help to get on...)
I always bring a mirror with me nowadays, one of those on a stand so I can sit almost anywhere to fix my make up. Thos elocker rooms are just TOO crowded to be able to fix everything in.

Some Närcon arrangers don't now shit about the overal dramu and rumours going around about NärCon.

It's quite sad.

By the way, Storcon last weekend was one of the worst cons I've worked at. No info, no schedule and almost no radios available.

A girl came to me in panic after her friend couldn't stand up or walk properly. Ididn't have aradio and I didn't even know if there was a medic at the con. The only thing I could offer was a glass of water and sending them to the info.

Alcohol is forbidden at all conventions, so it is a given, the guests can go out for drinks but make sure they know that they can't come back shitfaced, and they certainly can't show themselves to the con-goers (some of them really know how to spot someone that has been drinking). Though usually you drink before going to bed so this shouldn't be a problem, but maybe make sure that they don't drink the night before their performance, it's no fun to stand at a stage with loud ass music when you're hungover (and this will show on your face and playing which will in turn give a bad performance).

But since Närcon only care about as many visitors as possible and really nothing else the security probably wont change.

At Dinocon the security team was really good. Nothing really happened except some drunk teenagers at the convention grounds that got escorded out pretty fast, and the security team checked in every hour in all rooms just to see if everything was okay.

Not a Swede but few things as a fellow organizer.

DO'S
- always ask if the VIP's has allergies etc you should know about
- have a translator with the VIP's at all times. When they are merely at the convention or enjoying their free time, have someone with them that can both translate, hold off the crow and keep the guests company.
- make sure your guests are comfortable. Enough food, water, breaks.
- depending on the guests, their meals should be offered for them. Even if you pay a small sum of money for their performance at the convention.
- also if your guests are up for it, take them to a very traditional Swedish restaurant that offers a variety of different traditional meals.
- again, depending on the guests, book hotel rooms. If they are pros, they don't want to sleep in the sleeping hall but to have their privacy.
- keep your schedule tight, but flexible. There should always be some room for the guests to relax. If they come before the convention, give them time to recover from the jetlag, but always make sure you have thing or two planned if the guests want to go sight-seeing.
- When they are leaving, gather a small gift bag for them. Offer them small mementos as a thank you (something traditional is always good, maybe something edible as well). If you know anything about the guest beforehand, you can always try to surprise them with something (Swedish) that they might like.

DON'T
- Give them everything they want. Never let them walk over you. This means money as well.
- No alcohol before their performance nor afterparties at backstage.
- If your guest doesn't like to be touched/sign autographs/etc: RESPECT THAT. That means not you, not your friend or any person of the staff does it.
- Japanese people RARELY do this, but don't let your guests be assholes to the staff. (A reason why someone, a translator, is a good to have with them so they can work as a mediator in between)

Good luck!

A question on the tranalator part thought. We have some of the arrangers who is able to speak a bit japanese. Maybe at N2 level. Are japanese guest very demanding when it comes to translators (like they have to be born in Japan or something like that), like do they want professional translators or would someone like that be alright?

Otaku cafe is probably the worst "maid-cafe" ever.

The cosplayers have no idea what they're doing, at Storcon they blocked their entrance and were confused that nobody visited them.
Also, the founder of Otaku cafe is a horrible person.

>what would you guys suggest for my first con as a funk?
I would take somehing easy like
Activity (you need to be an extrovert for this though)
Reception/information (many organizers for reception are picky with whom they choose, so write a good application)
Sleeping halls (sleeping halls are not too picky with what you know, so it's easiest to get in to)
Videogames

It's easier to get work at smaller cons than at bigger, since bigger conventions know they will get a lot of applications and can therefore deny you if you don't have a decent application (not having a decent application just shows you don't really care to work at the con)
If you know anyone that has worked in the staff (or preferably someone that's an organizer) of some con, ask them to vouch for you - it will be a lot easier to get accepted.

About painful experiences:
At NärCon there is a very high risk that everything will go to shit-town, and you have to do things you were not told before the con that you had to do, some organizers may even be incompetent but they still got their position for some unknown reason.
Smaller cons are very prone to not have a good planning, this includes schedules and a description of what the workers are supposed to do, but there are small cons that are very good to work at, ask among any of your friends that have worked at cons (or you can ask here) how it was at some cons.

Usually when people write applications to work at conventions they NEVER explain why they can take stress, or WHY you are patient with other people. Hell, I could say that I'm Lady Gaga if I used the same way of writing applications as the majority of people do.
Just write down real-life experiences that made you patient, maybe something about your up-bringing that made you immune to stress, just explain WHY you are all these things you say you are. And don't just say "I like to work with other people", explain why you like to work with other people.
>End of rant, sorry.

>> No.6953990

>>6953987
Just realized I may have scared you with this, but I promise it's fun if the convention and your organizer know what they are doing!

>> No.6954017

Don't worry, I'm not scared off at all!
However, I am a person who have the diagnosis of aspergers, this is great in some cases pertraining to funk (for example I need order around me meaning I will often step up and make sure things are where they should etc. ) but of course has a strong negativity bound with it mainly due to stereotypes. I don't really want to elaborate due to wanting to remain anon, but there are some very clear perks of my diagnosis in regards to some positions as funk (info, per example), is this something I should mention as to WHY I can do certain things or will it just scare them off from accepting me? I have worked on my diagnosis for a long time so most people don't even notice it unless they already are knowing on the subject, so being socialöy awkward and similar isn't really a problem.

When I've written applications I've never mentioned that I am diagnosed with aspergers, mainly because it doesn't occur to me that they should know, if you want them to know you can write what you've just written here - that it is barely noticeable, or you can just make something up "I am very orderly since I find it hard to work in a messy environment, I always make sure to have my things in order before doing my homework" (this may be a very bad explanation, but it's just an example)
I believe it won't scare them off if you clearly explain that you come off as completely normal, so I think it depends completely on if you actually want them to know about it or not. You could even say that social interactions is actually one of your "special interests".
If you do mention that you have aspergers and you are worried that it will scare them off then you could actually mention that in the application and encourage them to contact someone that knows you that can vouch for you (if the organizer got something behind their forehead they will see that you are "normal" because of that fear).
It is by no means bad to be a little personal and tell about your fears that they will misunderstand, that just shows that you really want to try working as a funk.

>I hope I come off as sane because I haven't written an application for years
>(The perks of being a known organizer)

>>6954045
Thanks! Some conventions actually have staff-sites with forums where they sometimes explain quite well how to write an application, too bad those sites didn't exist for a few years back, but at least it exists now!

For all those that want to work in more "advanced" teams, but have previously only worked easier jobs, you really need to put down a lot of work on your application because even if I get a good application I'm still a bit "eeeeeh" if you have only worked in activities or in the sleeping halls.

No, no, not at all, you've been very helpful!
Which funkspots count as more advanced and what kind of experience is usually needed? What kind of people are acceptable to ask to vouch for you? (Obviously parents and close friends are off limits)

Also, does anyone know anything about Akt? I am intrigued but doubt if they can press the prices enough for it to become relevant.

File: 13 KB, 640x272, foogray.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
6954809

>>6954669
Well, the teams seen as more advanced are the ones that require that you have some actual skills in a certain area, for example in the documentation/photography team you need to know your way around a camera, and have proof that you are good at it (someone once gave a link to their instagram, and that resulted in an instant no), if you don't have any site that you upload your pictures to you could get a dropbox and share the link in the application.
If you do have the skills and you're confident in them then you should apply for those teams! You don't need to climb some ladder if you already have the skills for the "top position".
More examples of advanced teams:
>Stage
Stage-lights, sound, soundcheck, how to build a stage.
>Technology
Websites, network, electricity.
>Artist service (yes, i'm serious, you don't want a 14 year-old who is all over the place in such a team)
>Economy
Accounting, being trustable (don't want a d-bag to handle your money, now do you?)
>Security

I think someone that you have previously worked with, or that you just know briefly would be good to vouch for you, they're not too close to you so they won't feel like they have to lie. Also, if you know someone that knows the organizer of the team you're applying for - ask them to vouch for you, some organizers are lazy and if you give them a contact person that is just a click away (facebook etc) then you have a greater chance of getting accepted.

Yeah, Jack hosted the Homestuck panel at Storcon.
I have a friend who was in it who said that they felt like Jack and some other person interrupted everyone and tried to make the panel about themselves.
They also said that it was terribly organized, probably because Jack wanted to host a Homestuck panel before the team who are doing one for Närcon.

Jack clutters the Facebook groups for the fellow homestucks (the Stockholm one and the national one) They ask if they can borrow a wig, horns or overall spams the group with their storcon panel.

Not to mention, Jack is very self-centered during the meet-ups. To be honest, I've stopped attending the meet-ups because of Jack.

Our GoH's have never even hinted that the translators were not up to their par - quite the contrary. They are very happy that there is someone there to assist them, since the language barrier is quite high. (English-speaking guests are much easier, since most here do speak it.)
Most of our translators are fellow fans who (usually) have/are studying the language in university, they do not get paid and are mostly treated as part of the staff. I am expecting a underage ban for this post, but I will probably lurk around the thread so if you have any wishes regarding the administration of the meet I will probably see them and do my best to make sure we aren't ruining anyones con experience.

The swedish contestants seems pretty meh. I prefer the danish and that norweigan cosplayer. Are the other two swedish contestants going to be announced on Närcon or why do we only have two?

>> No.6990821

I keep hearing Närcon is the best, but I haven't been able to go yet (maybe next year). I went to the last Uppcon and it really sucked, but that's coming from an American who's used to giant American conventions, so I'll probably be forever disappointed.

If I wanted to make a cosplay group at Närcon, should I use their forums or is there another better-used place?

>>6958651
How does one become a translator for a convention? I could be the most useless translator and translate between Swedish, English, and Faroese.

It's fun to sit in cosplay and keep to yourself, drawing at a table and sneaking photos of people.

Would anyone buy doujinshi written in Swedish?

If the fanbase is big enought probably. I've only ever bought in japanese but for those who can't read that it would probably be interesting.

Isn't Tennyo in it this year too? Also, at least they seem to have sorted out some actual cosplayers as judges this time around, and not the clusterfuck of randoms it was last year. But I'm not holding my breath for a decent competition, because it's fucking Närcon and Närcon fucking sucks.

I live in Sweden and I'm new to cosplay. I'd like to visit a con to check it out. Which one should I attend? Are there any cool cons coming up soon?

>> No.6992997

Well Närcon is tomorrow so that's a bit late. Then there's a bunch of smaller cons depending on where in Sweden you live.

This guy has moved to the homestuck fandom. Though he barely knows anything about the comic so I'm guessing he's just trying to hide from his reputation. He cosplays Tavros (that is the Taurus troll with the big horns) although really badly with fabric horns, no wig and terrible water based makeup. He has yet to do anything so he might just be looking for a second chance but I would say be careful around him regardless.
To anyone in the fandom it is very obvious he has no idea what he is doing though.

Saw him a few times, and just turned around and went the other way. I'm glad I know that he is not just awkward now but a real creeper, because now I don't feel bad when trying to be so far away from him as possible.
