I'm going to otakon for the first time ever. It will be the very first convention I've ever been to. Going with a girl I really like who really wants me to come. What can I expect?

Is it absolutely nessecary to cosplay? It's just so soon and I'm not sure if ill have the time. Will I be out of place if I don't cosplay?

No, there are lots of regularly-dressed people roaming around conventions as well as cosplayers.

Hey there. Unfortunately the Otakon thread saged out, but, here's a quick rundown.

It's a very, very big convention and is more mantained by industry interest and displays than by fan run activities. There is no need to cosplay, but you'll see a lot of it. There's a ton of stuff to do there and it runs from about 8 AM-2 AM all days except Sunday, when I think they kick people out in early evening. If you want to look at cosplay photoshoots, look up the schedule on coscom -- those are fan-organized.
It's a really loud, busy, crazy convention that's still a lot of fun, but can be way more chaotic than others.

Tips:
-Hopefully you have preregged. Waiting in the reg line on Friday is terrible. Smart prereg people get into the line Thursday to pick up badges, but bring water regardless of when you get your badge -- there will still be lots of waiting and most of the line is outside.
-Don't buy convention center food. Bring food, go to a place outside the con, but don't try any of the fast-casual places real near the center, walk a couple blocks. The Light Street Pavilion has lots of food options and has reopened from last year. If you have a little money to spend, J.Pauls' is pretty good.
-Try and figure out what you want to do and where it is before going. Plans will inevitably change, but you'll have an idea of what you're doing.
-In Baltimore, the neighborhoods are often really small and wildly disharmonious, with nice ones next to awful ghettos. Be really, really careful walking at night, because congoers are a marked target for local muggers.

Hope that helps.

I want to remind you that pre-reg is $80 until around early August.

>but don't try any of the fast-casual places
You mean the street vendors

>The Light Street Pavilion has lots of food options and has reopened from last year.

Really? Because I've visited there around late 2012 and most of the restaurants are gone and replaced by a Riplies museum.

One more thing OP try to avoid Lexington Market. Might have a lot of cheap eats, but it's a open drug den.

Lexington Market is fine and has good affordable food, disregard Jkid.

Is it cheaper in August or something? Also who can point me to a very good cloud -advent children- costume or shinji from NGE costume? I don't want cheap spandex shit. Any help would be greatly appreciated

cheaper in august?
The 80 dollars is a pre-reg amount and it will be the same in at the door reg.

What do I put as a nickname on the registration form? Do people even use it?
I don't want to be the only faggot wandering around with my full name, nor that one guy who uses his steam name.

The street vendors are harmless, but you will literally be waiting for an hour at the places within a block of the con center like the California Tortilla. THAT'S why I said don't bother, dude. Though you can try them in the off hours and have better results.

They still have a fair bit of the food in Light Street Pavilion, dude, Ripleys' nonwithstanding.

Also
>Lexington Market
>open drug den

Ahwhat?

The badges are preprinted, you get it and write whatever name you want on the badge. They don't fill it in for you, don't worry.

I know that a lot of y'all have been to Otakon, and I'm contemplating going this year. The only problem is that I live in Mississippi. I have the money and time to drive there and back, I'm just curious as to if it's worth it. It would probably run me about $400 total between food, gas, hotel, and spending money for stuff there. Is it worth it?
