Since this is my first AX, I'm wondering: do you need a badge for events on the first day? I'm going to assume even the pre-reg line will become an hours-long ridiculous mess by even noon, and I'm interested in that Mega64 panel at 2.
I know some cons do the first day badge-less since they're usually still setting up and traffic is heavy.

I feel like I had other questions but that's all that jumps out at me right now.

Underrated hotel imo. I think it's because of the distance, but I've stayed there about 3 times for AX. People always complain about the service there, but I don't pay too much attention to the staff/ask for much assistance with anything, so that's never troubled me.

The rooms(all standard, always got the cheapest option, nothing fancy) I've had were all very nice, I really like the classic feel the hotel has overall with the decor, etc.

I'm staying at the JW this year, only because I think this is AX's last contracted year in LA, and if they move, god knows when I'll get a chance to stay there again for such a good rate.

taking your cat to a con is the STUPIDEST thing you can do and you apparently know nothing about cat psychology holy shit

They'll have to do something soon. Farmer's Field should be starting construction soon if they want to make a 2016 opening date, which means West Hall will have to come down sooner or later.

I wouldn't mind if it went back to Anaheim (even if it would be cramped). Long Beach isn't too bad of a location outside of the LBCC being pricks about things (among other things).

I think it's just that I just don't like the LACC as a location for AX. The problem is that there's very few venues around here that could accommodate it. /sigh

Rooms with a single bed are a good size, though I remember a friend of mine being in a room with two beds, and they took up a lot of the space(but then I was also in a double one year that was super spacious, so I guess it's hoping you get something good).

Hotel food is expensive as expected, but it is right near the heart of downtown, so walking a bit will get you to things like Subway, Chipotle, etc. There is a chain of small convenience stores called "Famima" littered throughout downtown(with one being next to a Starbucks on the same block as the Biltmore). There is also a Domino's Pizza on the same block as the hotel. There is an Ihop not too far, and a Denny's near the convention center. I've seen a CPK somewhere nearby too I think. There are tons of things to eat/drink in the area, I just named a few of my usual spots.

Part of my favorite parts of going to LA is walking around downtown honestly, so have fun and don't be afraid to explore!

Coming from someone who has gotten free staff food at so many other cons, it's SO CHEAP and EASY just to buy in bulk and have someone around to cook basic stuff like grilled cheese and hot dogs for staff. :| I've been to cons that even had like, buffet-style meals that changed throughout the con weekend and that was absolutely amazing.

I just don't understand how cons get away with not giving that staff and guests food/lodging. It's been totally opposite in every environment I've ever worked in in the midwest.

Stupid question maybe, but this is my first 'industry con'. Are there going to be workshops on how to potentially seek employment with companies? Will that be talked about at all? To be honest I'm not entirely sure. I've spoken with industry members about possible employment at the con, but I've never been to any of the industry panels before. I imagine you could at least bring it up with someone if you can find somebody in charge at the industry booths? That's what I did. If a company you're interested in is hosting a panel, I would recommend going and asking about employment during their Q&A session. It may even come up in the panel itself.
To put it in perspective, I asked about freelance retouch/lettering jobs. What type of work would you be looking for?

It's weird though since apparently last year food orders were coming from all over the place outside of the con and not only were the orders consistently awful, they were consistently incredibly late to the point where our department just sent people out on food runs because we were cranky and starving.

We did get pizza hut one day too, except it was only 1-2 pieces per person so we still wound up hungry.

Anaheim is the largest convention center on the west coast, but I think they went to LA because they got a better rate from LA for block hotels and stuff. From what I heard from staff people is that Long Beach will probably never happen again, but it also sounds like they are considering other venues.

I think there were plans to basically cut the LA convention center in half so they can build a stadium or something? It was in the news awhile ago.

I'm super excited and working on finishing my cosplay stuff.

Cosplay Plans/Schedule (pic related):
Gettin' my game on Thursday
Traffic cone with blue hair on Friday, either in the morning or after I'm done with LWA stuff for ACP
Shiny Chariot Friday and Saturday
Regular duds Sunday because I fly out early afternoon so it'll just be easier

Taking a break from working on my Shiny Rod at the moment. I don't know how to props, but I think it might come out okay. I'm learning. After I finish Chariot, I gotta adjust Levy so it fits better and maybe see if I can find some batteries for my duel disk. I'm visiting my folks on my way down so I had my wigs and stuff shipped to their house. Mom says two packages arrived for me so hopefully that means I'm good to go. I'll have to do some styling there but nothing too tricky.

For those attending the gathering, how many of you will be in cosplay? Or do most people just show up in casual clothes? Trying to decide if I should stay in costume for it or not.

>> No.6939396

>>6939367
The difficulty of getting into AX's Artist Alley really depends. Sometimes they open it up again if tables sell out too quick, sometimes there's tables left over. Because of the price increase, it's been the latter recently.

Depending on your table location, you definitely get a lot of good foot traffic, as AX's Artist Alley is located in the same room as the dealer's all (in the back). I haven't bought a table in a while because college is draining, but from what I remember the staff that managed Artist Alley tends to cut things a little too close (table assignments weren't in until around June). I've also heard the tables are a bit small in relation to the price ($125 last I checked).

I sold from 2008 to 2010 and made a good amount of money; I had a variety of items and found that people tend to be more willing to buy things like t-shirts, bags, keychains, buttons, and stuff like that rather than prints. Buttons are especially popular.

Basically just keep track of whatever anime is popular that year and have a good amount of 'classics' (Pokemon, anything Nintendo, etc) on hand because those never fail to sell.

...Oh, and Adventure Time. Everyone and their mom buys Adventure Time.

A lot of the younger people who go through the hall have their parents with them, and I guess parents are more willing to buy something the kid can actually use instead of something they'll put on their wall or whatever kids do with prints.

PEOPLE NEEDING A PLACE TO STAY.

Me and my buddy have a 2 bed motel room(we only need 1) at City Center Hotel, which is in walking distance to Anime Expo. We have an extra bed for the nights of July 4th, 5th, 6th. I’m asking that you pay half the price of the full value, which is $120 for all 3 nights, which is cheap for that area of LA, and I’m pretty sure all their rooms are taken for those dates by now. >LV in the summer

Yeah no..unless they changed the season they hosted AX to anywhere but summer for that it would be terrible. LV is so bad in the summer even a few scones outside makes you want to kill yourself along with majority of the hotels/venues overcompensating for heat making it sub zero inside..so it ends up being either stay inside and freeze or go outside and burn

However I will admit if it doesn't take place during summer LV would be a very awesome place to host...

>> No.6941936

None of the AX hotels are particularly close to the convention center (even the JW) so if you're walking to/from the con or to a shuttle or something you're still going to be out in the heat for a considerable amount of time.

I'm coming in from Michigan, and my buddy here tells me I should try to find time to get to Little Tokyo while I'm in the LA area. but really though everyone here drives but I'm sure that the Metro website might help you out a bit. If you're driving (which I'm assuming you aren't) you can get there quickly as it's right off the 101 and super easy to find. There's a store that sends second hand Lolita stuff, a shitty cosplay store across from it with a bunch of overpriced purikura machines, and an anime merch store in the same building. I really only go there for the food nowadays.

sage for off topic

>> No.6942500

As far as interesting thing goes, tons of restaurants, But especially with ramen shops. There are three major ramen shops in Little Tokyo: Orochon, Daikokuya, and Shinengumi. Out of the three, I would recommend Daikokuya, but both Orochon and Shinsengumi are fine too. There's also Kula, revolving sushi restaurant, as well as bakeries and sweet shops like Fugetsu-Do. Last but not least, Kinokuniya bookstore has tons of manga, and mitsuwa market where you can buy japanese food.

>> No.6942515

>>6942391
I actually walk it. The con is on Figuerora (sp?) and 11th, I usually take a shuttle bus to the furthest out hotel, which is usually on 2nd and fig or main. Its just a few more blocks from there.

There's two major sections to Little Tokyo, and yes it's very worth it. One is commonly called Little Tokyo Mall, and that's pretty much what it is. Its 3 stories, has an amazing bookstore, and a really good ramen shop. You'll know you're there by the giant friendship knot statue.

The other I just call Little Tokyo Plaza. It's past the knot some, and has a fountain in the center. There's a mochi shop there I absolutely love, along with another baker, the buffet Oiwake (also amazing food) and a market. There's also a handful of souvenir shops and other restaurants. There's a toy shop there, but they usually close up because they actually have a booth at AX.

If you do decide to drive it, there's a parking lot on 2nd that's usually about 5 bucks to park. I haven't tried the buses in LA but I hear they're extremely convenient.

>> No.6942526

>>6941932

I live in Las Vegas actually, and I think AX here would be a horrible idea. The biggest contributing factor is 90% of our convention spaces are inside casinos, and no matter how you put it, it just is not as family friendly as LA.

That aside however, the local cons hate competition and start petty rumors and shit all the time. An established con like AX prob wouldn't suffer too much from that, but let's not forget all of a sudden we're going to have Otakon too.

>> No.6942536

>>6942526
As someone who goes to Vegas a lot and to a few conventions at the LVCC I have to agree. A con of AX's size would be way too big for casino space and the LVCC there's nothing really down there. Like, nothing in walking distance. Food trucks usually congregate outside in the center area (near the monorail and all that) but that's it. I have the same reaction anytime someone mentions "Move SDCC to Vegas! The LVCC is huge!" That's only part of the puzzle.

And walking in Vegas heat is just asking for trouble. To avoid the heat you'd have to do December, January (which Otakon now has), or February, and that's obviously out of AX's element and gives up the whole July 4/summer thing which they probably count on for attendees. Every other month is either hot as fuck or unpredictable (like sometimes November is balls hot, sometimes it's freezing). Otakon itself is already going to have to battle ALA for people although with enough money for guests that might not be an issue.

Las Vegas has convention centers just like any other city, and if you don't think families and kids go to Vegas then you're obviously lying about living there since they're all over the place.
