I can respect some opinions, but the sjw on tumblr have taken it so far that they undermine the whole damn thing they're suppose to be fighting for in the first place. I grew up in an area with a lot of predominately Mexican people (California, Central Valley). Dia de los Muertos was taught about in school because, news flash, maybe if close to 30% of the school is Mexican, it'd be nice to learn about their holiday! And it was never a big fucking deal.

Mexico encourages their embassies to spread their culture by hosting inclusive events. There are Dia de los Muertos celebrations in the Czech republic now because of it. In fact, most government encourage this, encourage the spread of the culture of their country to other countries! Why does China give pandas to zoos? Why are there cherry blossom festivals in cities like SF which have Japanese sister cities?

Then, people complain about the fact that their minority is underrepresented in media, fashion, etc. when what people do is make their cultures hard to represent by basically requiring that everyone, from the actors on up, represents their race in a way they specifically approve of. I never knew about SJW until this one girl I met at school. Let's call her M. She's a tiny black girl with a fro who was a really cool nerd friend who was awesome to hand out with. We've had plenty of discussions about race in anime and cosplay and they were tame enough.

Then the spring musical happened. It was Dames at Sea and there's one song in the show called Singapore Sue. The whole bit is a hugely racist number, but in a way that makes fun of the way races used to be portrayed in hte early 1900s. The costume designer, Ting, a first gen immigrant Chinese woman, thought the number was hilarious. But the joke went COMPLETELY over M's head and she was FURIOUS at the school and the department. She completely abandoned one friend who just worked THE LIGHTING BOARD for the show and treats her like a KKK member any time they see each other now.

I graduated and never had to talk to her again, but heard that she went on to make an art exhibit tearing apart the play with the title repainted as "Dames at Semen" and graphic pictures of her getting raped by the white man.

Now I don't know about you, but I'm not sure that making the world aware of a 1960's play that's mocking 1920's media is going to do much to help the minority communities of 2013.

Worst part is she can't even be reasoned with. If you disagree with her she swells up like like an angry pigeon. And then she wonders why her only friends are professors.

I have a slightly similar story with a friend(more like exfriend at this point, I can't deal with her shit) of mine auditioning for a musical. There was a part for a character who is Japanese, and my friend(note that she is Chinese), got a callback for it. She was ecstatic, but she didn't end up with the role, a white girl was chosen instead.

She felt so incredibly slighted for not getting the role, she acted so entitled about it. She even said they thought the girl did a better job than her for the line readings, but she was so dumbfounded she didn't get it. I try to cosplay characters I look roughly like and that includes ethnicity. However, if there was a non-white character I really wanted to do, I'd just do it but I wouldn't black it up. I think it looks shitty in 99.9% of cases and yeah, black-facing makes me a little uncomfortable.
