Hi there /cgl/
I want to do a really impressive cosplay. Big hair, big props, but most importantly, big dress.

I'm staying away from Granado Espada, because I'd like it to be something I can actually play/watch/read, but to be honest, I can't think of anything close to that to attempt. If you have any suggestions that would be brilliant, otherwise just a big dress cosplay thread! Please leave a comment saying who the character is if you're able. Thanks very much.

Have some Yaya as C.C

Ooh wow, that's a great one. But I opened the image and ow my heart fuck you I wasn't expecting that

But yeah I think people latch onto the Coronation dress because it's the most impressive, recognizable one. The problem with Trinity Blood cosplay is that so many people half ass it because they think it'll get them an easy win in a cosplay contest. And heck, a lot of the time it works because if they have a decent enough base garment they can literally dip the thing in glitter and beads and call it an appropriate amount of detail vomit and blind the judges into giving them craftsmanship awards.

Problems, however, arise when you put a crappy Trinity Blood cosplay next to a goddamn legit one. This one, for instance, is really really lovely on its own and would probably get a craftsmanship award but looks kinda janky and lumpy when compared to the art.

the missing uh 'long' pieces/tassels (the original has several of them, the costume only appears to have two, one on each side), the missing part on the front with the roses (the part the appears to come OUT of the scalloped portion on the original design), and I don't see the scallops on the bottom of the bodice/top of the skirt portion at all. The lining of the cape appears to be a blue design, not a solid red. Just the first things I noticed.

Now, I did not say the costume isn't amazing. I just said (since I had never seen a side by side of the original artwork) that I was kind of surprised/a little disappointed they went to SO much work on it, but seemed to leave out a lot? Not something I could even come close to with my skills, and I still think it's extremely impressive.

The 'blue' portion of the cape you're seeing in the art is a heavily-shaded cape on the back of the dress made of the same material as the dress itself- which she has, it's just smaller than the one in the art and she's wearing the large faux ermine with the red lining over the top of it.

She is missing a good majority of the strips down the front with the roses on them (she has four actually, two on each side) but it does appear that she has the scallops on the bottom of the bodice (at least from what I can tell in this picture, the large sleeves and the ruffs at her wrists are blocking parts).

Not everything Thores does can be translated into a 100% wearable design, mind you. They did a pretty good job though.

>> No.6936459

>>6936437
Ohyeah they did an amazing job. Maybe the view is wrong and that part with the roses I mentioned that comes OUT of the scalloped part (which also has roses, so its a bit confusing, but in the original picture the part I am talking about is a 'grey' ish color, instead of the white color) is actually that white part with the roses you see in this picture in the front, and the scalloped area is higher up, so we can't even see the scallops at all.

yes, it's better than a good job I think though haha!

Completely agree. As much as I love Trinity Blood cosplay many people seem to think its an easy win and will chuck details on to a base and expect to get somewhere. I definitely prefer someone to take their time and try and match as much as possible. Using different methods also catches my eye rather than just chucking a load of jems on. I've been a judge at a large competition. I did judge several TB cosplays. The one that I gave the highest points to was an Astha because she had used silk screen printing to get the design onto her costume before sewing on all the beads. She beat the Queen Esther who had quite frankly throw up beads all over a basic dress.

Now that you mention it I can see what they have missed/gotten wrong. Its possible that they (I know its a team who made it) had their minds set on a particular event and missed details as they were running out of time.

Having said that it is an amazing costume. One of my favorites.

Trinity Blood used to kind of be an "auto win" at cosplay contests. I saw one at A-kon, but it was kinda meh.

Hey OP, also consider looking around at fanart and stuff. A lot of series will have fan "fancy" versions of the characters. I know there's some for Tiger & Bunny and FMA. And of course, if you're into it, Hetalia. Though those are all really male oriented, not big dresses, sorry.

Not a huge poofy ballgown, but Tsukimi's dress from Princess Jellyfish would be a nice challenge.

A few years ago I roomed with someone at a convention who made a Trinity Blood cosplay for the costume contest and flipped out because someone else entered with the same (much better looking) outfit. Not to mention they actually looked like the character, too...

Also, a lot of older J-RPG series have some nice fancy designs. Some off the top of my head are the Saga franchises, Mystic Ark, Suikoden, pretty much anything with Amano involved, ect...

Series that always seem to be present in cosplay comps: Trinity Blood, Bride of the Water God, Five Stars Stories, Clamp Stuff (mostly xxxHolic), Rose of Versailles, Princess Tutu.

For a good chunk of those I think they typically care more about how complicated the costume is more than they like the series.

>>6937129
TB seems to me like it's sorta fallen by the wayside as of late, though that may be because the only people still doing it are people that have gone on to read the novels, the manga, etc. instead of just watching the anime and then picking and choosing from artbook images and giving it the old college try.

more crazy Empire stuff to keep this somewhat on-topic.

That's funny. When I saw the Trinity Blood cosplayers in the room for the pre-judging my first thought was, "Well, I'm fucked, there's Trinity Blood cosplay!" But they didn't win a single award, despite being a group with a fancy ass cosplay. The top 3 were Gankutsuo, xxxHolic, and Magi. An honorable mention went to Madoka's god outfit. But it just goes to show that Trinity Blood isn't an auto win anymore. But fancy ass cosplays in general are. If you make a ballgown, judges go apeshit for it.

>> No.6937220

To be honest, fancy costumes showcase more skills in construction compared to simpler ones so it's only natural that they would be overall more impressive. Interesting that the TB cosplayers didn't win, but it's nice to see that they're not auto-win costumes anymore.

I'd love to see more Gankutsuo. Beautiful designs with lots of room for interpretation and using fabrics you normally couldn't use. agreed. they also allow for fabric interpretations like the other anon said, and the possibility of an immense amount of handwork and undergarment construction.

for example, i made my court panniers, petticoats, pockets, corset, chemise, garters, and shoes in addition to doing all the handwork on the overdress of my marie antoinette costume. i also tried to make it super historically accurate by using appropriate fabrics and patterns for each piece, while still adding the bling of takarazuka (i made the light-up finale bouquet as well for a prop). i literally had judges crawling up under my skirt to look at all the underwear and foundation pieces, which was pretty hilarious. in addition to showiness i think judges also love attention to small details that aren't always visible on the costume.

>> No.6937451

>>6937344
Good judges pay attention to stuff like that. One time we had a girl enter a blingy dress and not win throw a shitfit, and one of the judges I was working with was like "But her dress didn't FIT and it didn't match the picture she showed us." I think it depends a lot on who's judging if they pay attention to things like that or not.

>> No.6937476

>>6937451
exactly

a good judge will look at the whole picture and not just how shiny something is. lots of people make fancy costumes thinking tehy can hide shoddy craftsmanship with hot glue and sparkly trim and detail vomit but a good judge can see through that to the real construction and know that a good costume is more than just 'fancy' its fancy done WELL

>> No.6937492

>>6937451
I feel so bad for judges when this happens. When something that dazzles the audience doesn't win that is. So you stand there on stage and tell them why? Hell no, the most you can do is go on the con forum later and put up a disclaimer for all those that will come and baww.

I remember I competed in Ohayocon one year and afterwards there was a Princess Tutu pair that was really upset that they hadn't won anything. But their tutus were nothing but raw edges, a lot of parts were made with felt and hotglue and their feathery bits were craft store feathers and boas. I was torn on whether I should just be honest with them or if it was worth it. I went to ask if I could see my score sheet and there was a Stein and Medua that had made these gigantic soul bubble props that were waiting and pissed. Yeah they looked kinda cool on stage but there were pretty shitty up close. Also the Medusa had all these cardboard arrows and snakes poking out of her. Definitely going for quantity over quality.

This is why I wouldn't ever want to judge. I feel like any decision you make will earn you tons of hate and you'll be seen as a bitch even if you know your stuff and are honest.

>> No.6937571

>>6937492
Ugh, I hate it when something sparkly but crappy doesn't win and they throw a shift it nd come to bitch on cgl, and then people just see it on stage under lights and are all, "Judge collusion! favoritism! Popularity contest! Blind judges!" And it's like, if anyone had asked for feedback you could say, "The blindly dress was hot-glued together!"

And usually they lose to another blingy dress, but a well made one.

Trinity Blood has never been an 'auto win' in my country, thank god. This means that those that do place do so because they did a great job on the costume. Annoyingly, its the fur suits that seem to auto win. While I can understand the length of construction that goes into one it can overshadow a well made dress despite it having rough edges.

>>6937492
I have judged a lot and yes, it is always a tough decision. I tend to look for a match in shape, good construction, clean finishing and a good grasp of the character design. Sometimes the big dresses can end loosing as quite often the cosplayer will think that using lots of fabric will gain them loads of points.

I'm a Trinity Blood fan but would never favor a TB costume over another series costume that has been better constructed. I like to see good well costumes. In fact, sometimes I judge too harshly on TB costumes as I'll know what they are meant to look like.

Yeah, no one bothers with a petticoat or hoop to actually poof it out. It's also really badly done by girls who want to crossplay Ciel, but they still don't make it crossplay. They didn't give him boobs in the series when he wore this. He's still a boy, he's just a boy in a dress. So you need to corset yourself in, but also strap down the boobs.

Nowadays there's the possibility of using printable fabric or having it custom printed as well. I wish I could afford to do more Gankutsuou cosplay because it's one of my favourite things ever.
