How do you all keep trinkets organized?

Hair accessories, jewelry, lotions, random small things that don't have any other places, etc. I'm hoping for something more creative than a bead box or sorted drawers, like to have my accessories on display.

I'm in the middle of decorating actually. I can't do much with the walls but I can sure cover them.

Carpet isn't possible down there for insurance reasons anyway. It would constitute a "bedroom", which would make my insurance go up. It has to be in the form of area rugs, so it looks like i'm hitting up the store for a bunch of them. :/ Boo.

May I make a suggestion? Look into the stuff they use to cover garage floors. Comes in different colors and they throw stuff into it that kind of sparkles. It'd probably be cheaper and faster then new flooring, and it wouldn't be destroyed like carpet if there was flooding. Also I think it would keep it from being listed as a bedroom, thus no raised insurance. Have the stuff in a neutral color, and get a nice area rug to put on top. No more bare cement floor.

You might want to look into doing some sort of concrete polish and finish on the floors, if they are concrete. I'm pretty sure they're waterproof, they're often used outdoors and in garages so I doubt it'd make it a bedroom, and you could still put down an area rug or two for coziness. You can get it tinted or with designs, too.

If you're getting water in the basement and you're keeping your stuff down there, you might want to invest in a dehumidifier if you haven't already. I store my costume stuff in a similar space and it helps a LOT to prevent mold, musty smells, etc.

What do you use to hold your posters up? I've tried both masking tape and sticky tack, both of which tend to ruin my posters and the latter of which never seems to work very well.

I remember when I moved into my new home a few years ago, I had to spend half an entire day going around trying to remove all the goddamn nails the previous owners had left in their walls.
There was at least over 20.
And to make matters worse, the wall crumbled a little when I pulled a nail out, leaving tiny craters everywhere that looked like bulletholes.

I only clean my room every once in a while but when I do I usually end up throwing a good 2-3 plastic bags worth of stuff out. Shit collects over time and I just have to make sure I routinely keep throwing out the old to make room for the new.

Getting into a routine helps. Along with cleaning regularly, I try and do a quick clean up in my room every time I do a load of laundry (every week or two) and I dust the same day I do my bed linens (every week). I vacuum and clean my mirrors/counter every time I dye my hair (three weeks) and clean the toilet whenever I run out of/replace the toilet paper. I don't spend more then three combined hours cleaning but my room(s) stay(s) very neat.

For sewing I try to do a big clean up whenever I finish a project. I try to tidy up every evening when I'm done for the day since it get's out of hand so quickly.

I am the kind of person whose junk piles up pretty quickly. I used to have this huge problem with keeping ANYTHING tidy for more than a couple of hours.

So I decided to clean up and organize every nook and cranny of my room and then to keep to it.
I took this rule from some website online with this motto called a '15 minute rule'. Basically, they said every day you clean up/organize for 15 minutes, but I sort of changed that.
At the end of every day, before I go to sleep, I made a clear rule that the room must be tidy before I get lie in my bed.
So I take all the clothes off the floor and put them in my drawers, put all the trash into my cute little bin, I put all my accessories or any other things I took outside of my drawers or boxes back where they belong, I take any dirty cups or dishes downstairs and I'm done.
It sounds a lot if your whole room looks like it's been hit by a hurricane, but if you start this rule after you properly clean your room, keeping it tidy at the end of every day won't last more than 10 minutes and can last you as little as a couple of minutes once you get the hang of it. I sometimes do it with my timer on and do it as quickly as I can to see if I can get to finish in under 2 minutes or so. Makes it quicker and more fun.

Just want to say I relate to you guys, and thanks for the tips.

As an art student, I've collected a lot of materials from school and projects. Hard to toss out or to place around the house (family rule is to keep your things to your rooms), but I should look into selling some of the materials or giving away stuff. Also as an AA artist, I have bins of fabrics and materials everywhere.

I hope so too. On the plus side, the place is owned by my husband's aunt(detatched studio from the house) The rent is much cheaper and they're including the utilities in the rent. Our current place only included the water and garbage. Even if I don't find a new job right away, the rent is cheap enough we can save up money for awhile until I can find a new stable job. Also since it belongs to his aunt, we have a little more freedom to decorate and put nails in the walls and such. Place could use a new paintjob too, the walls have wood along the bottom half and a dark green paint along the top. It makes it feel really dark and cramped. Hopefully we can change the paint to something lighter.

I would probably keep the wall empty and try and clear space around the room since it looks a little cluttered. I'm also disinclined towards the idea of shelves on the wall by the bed unless you want to end up like Flat Stanley. If you think the wall looks a bit unfinished, a strip of wallpaper put along horizontally can help, near the ceiling (I'm not sure what it's called. I'd probably also get an armoire for the things in the plastic boxes.

Recently they also had a photo project of what a week's worth of food looked like to families around the world. Man you could easily see why Americans are as fat as they are. Most places had a LOT of fresh goods mixed in with a couple of processed things. America had the opposite.

My room would give a compulsive cleaner a heart attack. Right now it's a kitty sanctuary. I sleep in a doorless closet and paint/draw on my walls. Recently I pulled things out of my bed that I had been sleeping on, and found a machete, sword, and antique trap (not armed), as well as craft supplies and cleanish clothing. I nail tote bags to my walls to hold things, and every surface aside from my bed is currently piled with things to the point that nothing is usable.

I might have a problem. I won't post the picture, but you all get the idea.

How do I make my room more "cute/cool" and less "headcase"? Current color theme is black, white, and wine red.

Firstly i'd just get some boxes and organise everything, whether you want to keep the items, sell them or throw away. Then decide whether you want to have storage boxes to keep everything neat and label them of course!

Then within a month everything is awful again, like I'd never gotten rid of anything at all. How much time do the people in this thread spend maintaining their rooms?

I like my color scheme, but I could change it with a little bit of effort. Maybe keep the black and white, switch out the red? Above all, I want my room to be accommodating to animals. I have a small space to work with.

The only real themes I have going are foo lions and rabbits, which certainly don't go together.

I clear out my room once a month or once every 2 months depending on how much stuff I have. I usually check my wardrobe to see if I don't wear anything, or if i've bought more things. Plus I see if there are other bits and bobs I don't really need anymore and try to sell or give away to charity!

I make my bed everyday, and ensure that my desk is fairly clean and my makeup table is too. I change my bed covers every week!

Black and White is not a very good bedroom colour, it screams more bathroom or kitchen. Maybe keep the red and white, and incorporate black accesories?

Your shoes are probably better off in something breathable since the plastic can make them sweat and they may grow mould.

I'd say it looks cluttered where you have lots of items in one area, such as your soft toys, the items on your computer desk, your desk with the mirror or your shelves. The shelves could be solved by moving the mirror, I think. You could clear the area with the armoire and mirror by moving the butterflies, perhaps hanging them on the wall. Raising your "inspire, imagine, dream" just a little up will create some space. It could also do with a nice border. Maybe just stick it onto a larger piece of coloured paper. The same goes with the black thing above the mirror which could be hung up and the doodly looking thing on the left. As for your computer desk, I'm not sure what those flowery things are... but perhaps they can be hung up. I'd also probably have a small box to put the monitor on that I would personally paint black.

Hey! Hmm, I don't have enough space for an armoire i'm afraid. I didn't want anything as high as my bed, so that's why I settled for the shoe boxes, but now you've mentioned mould etc. I might take that into consideration - but i'm still not sure what I will go with!

Also the mirror was put there because that area will have my jewelry box and hair accesories, and i'd primarily like it to be there for that reason - but looking at the shelf I can see what you mean by it being cluttered.

I've been meaning to hang up the moths for ages, but I honestly don't know where to put it without it look out of place or random.

Ah the black thing is a blackboard which I need to hang, trying to decide whether to use string or ribbon to hang it on, but that will go next to the mirror!

Also above the mirror I will be putting 3 various sized boxes, but I haven't chosen what colour to paint them yet as they are a variety of pink shades. So maybe that'll give some space!

Ah the flowery things are lights which I need to hang up! I need to drill some holes but at the moment I am being so lazy it's terrible :(

If you consider buying vegetables that are in plastic packaging, the plastic usually has holes in to alleviate the problem of condensation in the bag. You might be able to do something like that for the plastic boxes.

Well that's the thing, I have that very well covered. Shelves in abundance since I have a small bedroom, I have to take advantage of vertical space.

Gotta love shelving, no matter how narrow or little, you can install some somewhere, just have to do it properly. Over a year and my shelves have been holding up very well with the weight that has gone on and off them. I'm saving up for additional shelves on the other walls.

I keep them in a hanging jewelry organizer that I've had since my dorm days. I'd love to display my things, but I don't wear jewelry enough on a daily basis to show them off, and I have very little space in my apartment bedroom. I really want to get a tiered cake stand for that sort of thing.

Man...as much as I want to decorate my room with all sorts of ruffles and frills, I think I'd rather focus on re-creating a lolita wardrobe. If anything right now, I need to get space saving stuff, like bed risers and milk crates. I can't believe crates are so hard to find these days. The local milk distribution center don't give them out anymore.

These are pretty convienent, hangs in the closet or behind the door. I've found cheap versions of this in various stores in the mall (Charming Charlie's had them in various colors) and they're easy enough to make. Just a clothes hanger, a yard of fabric, maybe some batting or felt inside for sturdyness. You could include a flap or flat area to stick earrings directly through too.
I keep my jewelry in some of those cheap "treasure chest" type boxes just for simplicity, but my earrings and brooches are all pinned through a piece of felt that gets rolled up inside. If you use real 100% wool felt it will also keep the posts and pins clean and tarnish/rust free.

A taller coat rack would keep your things from dragging on the floor and free up visual space near the ground.

My friend puts clear tape on the back of the posters, the on top of that, puts her masking tape on. That way, the smooth and strong surface of the first layer tape will ensure the poster doesn't get ruined.
