Currently drawing up plans to stick a mini cooler in my 3DMG. Will have to fake two of the blades on one outside half and there might be an extra seam, but it's an acceptable sacrifice.

Added a comically oversized tie to the accessory pile today. The underside is an embarrassing mess though (simple math, how does it work?). At least I got the shape/size right as far as I can tell and no one should be able to see it anyway.

Not totally happy with how the cord on the safety pin looks. Might have to re-do it again, the yarn picks up cat hair pretty easily and the color got all muddy. I guess all that's left now is to actually make the shirt and pants.

I posted a spergtacular explanation of how I put them together in the previous thread, but I closed it already. tl;dr I glued a bunch of (suede) leather to a cheap pair of Target shoes that had the right heel and toe shape, picture related.

They've got some issues if you look up close (suede is not very forgiving when it comes to misfiring with the glue, among other things), but it worked pretty well for a first attempt at anything of this nature.

Make-up test for Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite. It looks better than I expected it to, but it definitely needs some work. Constructive criticism is appreciated if you have the time! Next time I'm gonna use a thinner line for my eyeliner, find a more dramatic lip color maybe (?), use a little more blush, and I definitely want to do something different with my lower lids but I'm not sure what. Drawing a line all around my eye like a lot of Elizabeths do just makes my eyes look smaller, and faking it with lower lashes just doesn't look good because I have prominent eyelids. If anyone has an idea, I'd much appreciate it!

I'm working on a N52 Supergirl cosplay, with the flair of Superman's costume in Man of Steel.

I realize some people aren't going to be fans of my choice, but most Supergirl costumes I've seen look so flat because of the flat colors. So I added the texture in to add some dimension to it. c:

Made some minor adjustments to Sumia's chestplate and started gessoing it tonight. It already looks so much nicer, I am pleased. This is just 1.5 coats of gesso, no sanding. I think after sanding it up and 3-4 more coats (and eventually a good paint job) it won't look nearly as messy as it did earlier. So happy that I no longer feel like I wasted $40 of Worbla.

I was thinking more along the lines of minibar... Kidding. Mostly. But I'll probably stash some water or a sandwich or something as well. I also figured you could probably run a camelbak water pack through one of them if you don't mind the extra tube. With a little insulation and a few ice cubes, it should stay frosty for quite some time.

That'd be pretty great, though, you get a group of SnK cosplayers together and everyone starts pulling food and drinks out of their 3DMG. Impromptu picnic hell yes.

Don't mean to sound like a cunt, but did you do your topstitching on the blue in white in some spots? It's really visible and kind of wonky on the edging on the front-center pieces. The rest of it looks pretty nice, so the rumply, uneven edging in the front is kind of distracting?

>> No.6916355

Yep. The white in the second half of the picture is just freezer paper ironed to the fabric. I just went to town with a ruler and an exacto knife. It's tedious, yes, but it didn't take more than 3 hours total, including drying time between paint coats. As a tip, if you use the same navy fabric for the belt as you do for the rest of the costume, you don't have to reverse the stencil and paint those in, obviously (though you do need to heavily interface it if it's holding the weight of your bunny cubes). Also color cohesiveness +5!

I was super anal about matching my blues and greens to the point where I literally painted all of my green fabric and accessories, but it kind of bit me in the ass when the shoes were slightly off color and looked hilariously bad in photos. I've got a much better idea of what to do this time.

I first got super low profile heels ( $10 at Payless hell yeah!)
Next I measure my thigh at its widest part (23 inches cuz in skinnyfat) and the length if my inseam plus to the end of my toes when they are pointed (40 inches because I'm a Glamazon.) I bought a leather looking spandex in down town LA and proceed to cut two 23x40 rectangles out and sewed tubes out of them
After that I wore them inside out so that the seam was at the inside of my leg and pinned it tighter to contour to my leg while trying to maintain the seam in the center of my leg. Only go from thigh to ankle. Then stich along the pins using a stich that will stretch.
Next put on your base heels and wear the sock over your heels and hand stitch the hole closed at your toe. Then cut a hole for the heel and voila!
These look best when they are taught on your legs so instead of making them like tights as I had planned, I'm going to sew a patch of flesh colored material from the top of the black material to my crotch and just keep it in place with garters

Pic related is when I used a similar method to make the illusion of tights on one leg and thigh high on the other.

I bought legit vintage kimono bolts off of shinei. That one was marked as a mixed weave, so it's probably a silk/rayon mix or similar? My other fabrics are a silk ro bolt and a 100% silk bolt. Both are stiffer. I got a another bolt of 100% silk for the obi and it's a lot heaver than this stuff, but I think it probably would drape similarly. It's kind of unfortunate that the layer I'm working on now goes underneath everything else.
TL;DR: WOW KIMONO BOLTS ARE AWESOME I GOT THEM ON SHINEI. (I'm in love with all this fabric, bury me in it.)

It's actually been really fun so far! It's just very slow and I have a short attention span when it comes to marking it out and pinning it (and I just made a mistake in my calculations, oops). Plus I get to do it all three times over.

The best place to start is by finding a contact for one of the costumers or costume designer, if you get a response they will generally tell you where the fabric was purchased and the name of the fabric. They didn't remember the exact store but I found out where their studio was and did some calling around the area until I located the store that had sold to them, and asked if they had any left.

Oh! And I finished painting all the circles for his circle armor loin cloth thing? I think it was meant to be scalemail but the artist didn't know how to draw scalemail so the 3D model doesn't show it either. So I just made a bunch of circles out of craft foam and I'll assemble them into a skirt.

Hunting down the Effie shoes was less of an adventure but still took months of searching until I found the most random single seller taobao auction of knock-offs of the designer shoes she wore.

Poked new holes into all the tiny straps on my Effie shoes to resize them smaller and so the buckle sat in the middle. Brushed and treated the faux-suede to see if I could get it to look shiny (the shoes in the movie are glossed leather)... no such luck.

Does anyone know how to add shine to suede or a treatment to make shoes shiny? was wondering about adding a gloss or if I should just leave it and stop being a sperg.

Also your front bow looks a little weird; it's too horizontal and not enough vertical, if that makes sense.

>> No.6923983

>>6923700
I don't think the skirt is even close to being done. When you make the pleats, you start with a rectangle, stay stitch the correct 'V' shape and then cut the waistline. In the picture, the pins for ironing down the pleats aren't even out and the waistline isn't finished. It's obviously still in progress.

With that said, I hope this is what that person is going to do.

That's true. It's the nature of rectangle pleated skirts. I've been meaning to try Sparklepipsi's pleating method to get better flair, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

(Even in Sparklepipsi's tutorial the waistline looks straight until the 'V' was outlined, stay stitched and cut out. I wasn't saying that everything was perfect, but complaining about stuff that's not complete is retarded. Look at the thread we're in.)

I'm the tenth doctor from the suggestions thread and I'll say this: The suit i got was such a stroke of blind luck that two years later I still cant believe it. It was a 3-button Haspel suit with a loose waist and lighter brown pinstripes I got for $15. I, nor anyone else in the UNIVERSE will ever be that lucky again.

That suit in the link is a baggy zoot suit and would require so much tailoring that the price will get closer to that of the Baron Botique tenth doctor suit which already has an accurate pattern.
My best advice is to go to Spoonflower and search for the tenth doctor brown pinstripe by CuriousJoan or search "tennant" if you wand the blue fabric. get 4-5 yards of the $18 cotton. Research the "making my tennant suit" blog by Steve Ricks untill you have enough details to make a pattern or alter an already existing coat to make a pattern. I found two 4-button coats that I'm Frankensteining to make the accurate pattern. If you do all this then the entire suit would cost in the $100 range, and the next closest thing is the Baron Botique suit in the $300 rang with SCREAMING loud pinstripes.

Best of luck and I think you have the look down.

I haven't tried Sparklepipsi's tutorial (link, anyone?), but I personally dislike the look of non-circle skirts for fukus. To get that extra poof and flare, minimum of one circle skirt is needed (again, imo). I've used 1½ circle skirt here (pardon the hiproll, it's just an old one standing in to give me an idea of proportion). I still need to hem the skirt and attach it to a new hiproll, but you get the idea. I mean, my fuku is faaaar from perfect, but I'm happy with the poof in my skirt at least. Doing a circle skirt is worth the effort, it doesn't take that much longer!

I'm going to attach it with snaps, so that it'll removable. I have made several fukus with the dress attached (like they do it in the musical), and it's not all that hard to hem it, just a bit cumbersome. I tend to use GSTQ's idea of hanging the dress from a hanger while you hem it. I've made quite a few fukus by now, and am definitely getting better with each one I make, so I love discussing techniques. It looks so simply, yet is so hard to get right. I've put snaps on the sleeves, and will attach some to the collar as well (I've run out), and then attach the skirt to the hiproll, and snaps to the hiproll. It's the first time I'm attaching a skirt with snaps, but a friend does it and her fukus look great (and makes the bodice re-usable!).

For the construction of the bows I think I did ok on. I tried one sided iron on interfacing, but the bow still didn't stand up enough. I used double sided Steam-A-Seam sheets as a last resort and everything was so crisp. I am still working on what shape me pattern is, but I really like the sheets.

I was going to look around joanns and see what fabric paint they had around. The flowers for Meiko are really dark, I didn't have anything suitible on me to work on it, so I'll probably mix some paint to get the right color.

Jacquard Textile and Jacquard Lumiere paint are opaque as fuck and remain flexible. It's a bit more expensive than regular fabric paint, but definitely worth it and the range of colors is great. JoAnns carries it as well.

Pic related. All the green was white+Fluorescent green Jacquard textile painted over either white or dark navy fabric.

Man it is really something to see that just about every senshi outfit made now is good.

used to be rare but now there are so many tutorials and detailed pictures that if you don't make a good one you have to have been utterly not trying.

Back when I started cosplaying Alisa was the best Moon and maybe once every couple years you'd see a decent one.
I was still learning to sew well and after seeing so many fail at getting just the basics wrong I decided I was too unskilled to do a good one and would not add to the pile of meh.
Now that I am skilled and there are so many resources I am too old to look as good as I would have in it when I was 19-25. Sigh.

I don't envy the popularity bullshit newer cosplayers have to put up with but I do envy the resources you guys have.

Resin can be tough to work with, so don't get discouraged and just try again. It's expensive, so i know it kind of sucks, but no one is perfect on the first go. I have friends who do cosplay comissions for a living that messed up with resin a few times on their first go.

It's Vanellope's Wand. I thought the 8oz kit would be enough, but it wasn't. I put the craft foam in at the bottom and it just kept floating up to the top (apparently I should have done a little bit, let it harden a little, then put the foam on, let that harden a little, and keep layering? I dunno.)

I'm going to try one more time and if it doesn't work just going to half ass it with a wooden disk and some paint. Like you said, resin is fucking expensive.

>> No.6929526

lots of air bubbles in that shit, bro. try pouring it out in a much thinner stream from higher above the mold. helps stretch it out so you get less bubbles. and don't get discouraged, resin has a huge learning curve and everybody fucks it up at first

>> No.6929530

>>6929496
I've seen this sort of bubbling before with an unrelated person's project that involved casting resin with wood dowels embedded. The bubbles formed around the dowels, and they said it got real hot. It hasn't happened before with the other castings either, though they didn't have anything embedded in the mold.

>> No.6929542

>>6929526
Another solution for dealing with the air bubbles is to use a resin with a much slower cure time. Or a vaccuum chamber (which is the professional solution). Aside from pouring a thin stream, drop the mold gently a few times once you pour to help any bubbles rise to the surface.

where do you get your fabric from?

>> No.6929611

>>6929524
Wait whoa okay I think your problem is actually the craft foam.
1. Resin gets super hot as it cures, that's what it does normally, and it's melting the foam, which is releasing its own weirdo chemicals.
2. Craft foam is full of teensy tiny little air pockets that are shifting and merging and escaping as the foam melts.

Try something non-porous and your results should improve significantly.
Also, if all else fails, just make it a legit lollipop. Sugar, water, and food coloring, yo.

Would sealing the craft foam with something like modge podge stop the resin from eating at it? I mean I could definitely just PAINT the crowns onto the resin after casting it if that won't fix it.

It's an epoxy resin on a latex mold, everything is castin craft brand.

I considered the lollipops, I went to culinary school and sugar casting this thick would be fairly resistant, but I'd be afraid of it melting in the heat or if it got wet being very sticky/attracting bugs.

I used the castin craft latex mold making shit. The little crowns were cut out of craft foam, though.

I could cut them out of cardboard or something, I guess? I figured if I just slathered enough paint/gloss/resin sealant on it, that maybe the resin wouldn't eat at it. First attempt was just straight foam.

>> No.6930762

Definitely not cardboard!

You might need a 2-part mold.
One that is the initial shape that gets filled, and then the top piece with the star bevel goes on top so that when you peel it off, it is there to be filled in.

More experienced snobs probably have a better idea.
