Requesting critique for my John wig, please.

I'm gonna need to restyle it soon because after I took this picture, after having worn it all day that day, it's kind of losing its style and spikes.

While I do realize that this wig is a bit bushy and better suited for say a Makara or maybe Mituna, with its spikes I think it looks pretty neat, although I would like a second opinion, or maybe some advice regarding it. Much regards.

I'd say make the spikes thicker/bigger. Right now it just looks wispy, and like the spikes were accidental rather than styled in. You should trim up the bangs and style those, too.

I'd recommend washing it out and using heat styling to tame the frizziness a little bit. You can use very hot water (not boiling!) or a hair dryer to get the hair to move in the direction you want it to go *before* hairspray. Then you're going to want to use bigger spikes- larger sections of hair- instead of a bunch of small, wispy spikes.

Find a few John cosplays that you like and use their pictures as a starting point for placement of spikes, how to treat the bangs, etc.

freezer paper can be found at walmart, fabric paint at your local craft store (or possibly also walmart)
you put the freezer paper over an outline or printout of the shape you want, then cut that shape out. then you iron it down onto the cloth in place and use it as a stencil for when you're painting on the bones. after you're done painting just peel the freezer paper off
i'm not sure if i'd recommend it for this kind of thing, but i don't really see any alternative, other than cutting out bone shapes from fabric and sewing them on

silencedrowns did the bones on her suit sewing on stretch fabric, which is an alternate method you might want to consider.

It leaves a distinctive texture around the edge of the bones (here's an example super-closeup), which you may either really hate or really love.

I would recommend, if you can, moving the horns a bit forward so they're not hiding out in the back there. You've got a good consistency on the makeup, but you definitely need either gray or black on the lips. I'd recommend darkening the eyebrows even more and going for some eye makeup, too. I've never been a fan of the bright red fake lashes, even though they're canon. A more subtle red mascara over fake black lashes might work. The smokey red eyeshadow is a definite plus, too.

I'd recommend trying out some eye makeup outside of cosplay- just play around with it! Find some pictures of makeup you like and try to imitate what they did. You'll be able to get better at it and pick styles that look good with your face and eye shapes. That way, whenever you're in full troll-face you will already know what you want to do with your eyes. :)

yeah I got the same one and a few scissor snips in the wrong direction and it looks shitty as hell. I threw it in the trash as soon as I got home from the con.

my suggestion would be to use some heat styling- straightener on low for barely a few seconds at a time, especially- to guide the hair to do what you want it to do. it's got a lot of frizziness that needs to be tamed. also be careful as hell when making those cuts, because my wig looked like a disaster. I'm just getting Arda for my next one.

Thing is, there are a few strands of hair that just stick up for no Goddamned reason. I'm a little tentative to try doing too much to it though since I've never styled my own wigs before (I usually rely on other people I meet at cons or meets who don't mind helping me out), but at some point I'd have to learn. And if I fuck up then I'm without a Dave wig for a while.

So, I'd like a myth debunked, please. I hear that you shouldn't use heated tools (hair dryers, straighteners), unless it specifically states so (like if the wig that you got was of good quality and you paid a decent price for it, meaning no wigs $20.00 or cheaper...?) I'm quite a rookie at this but I'm looking for insight, if that's alright.

There are two different kinds of wigs- heat-resistant and, well, not heat-resistant. The heat-resistant ones (Arda wigs are all heat-resistant, I believe) will act like normal hair in the presence of heat-based styling tools. They'll style and hold, generally speaking.

The non-heat-resistant wigs will actually melt. Now, most people will tell you to avoid any sort of heat-based styling because of this- but remember that you don't have to treat wigs like normal hair. In some cases, melting will help your case instead of hurting it.

First, take hot water styling. This is the method where you heat up water to almost boiling (but not quite- I usually use a small coffee maker I haven't ever made coffee in, or turn the faucet as hot as it'll go) and pour it over your wig while it's on a wig head. This does two things: it can straighten curls (especially when done a few different times), and it can tame frizz by tamping down the fibers to flow in whatever direction you want them to.

Another heat method is hair drying. If you put the hair dryer on hot and put it close to the wig, it will partially melt and bend the fibers in whichever direction you're blowing. This is especially helpful with frizz, hairs that stick up, and parts that you want to change.

The last third of heat styling is the actual "tools" like curlers, straighteners, etc. On non-heat-resistant wigs, these can be used- but with EXTREME CARE and on their lowest setting. Still, I've successfully straightened a non-heat-resistant wig with a straightener before. It's just a matter of keeping in mind the fact that you are literally melting plastic, so you need to keep a light and quick touch.

The hair drying one is what interested me the most. I have a sort of long, a bit bushy wig I use for John, but it came from The Five Wits and it's heat resistant, although I haven't tried anything yet. But I think experimenting or doing trial and error things should be okay since I now know what I should and shouldn't do now.

So, speaking of that, any specific tips for John's hair and what to do with it exactly? I was told that I need to make sure that the three spikes are all distinct and together, and not exactly wispy or anything.
