Otome prints are superior to lolita prints, in my opinion.

>> No.6904815

>>6904449
Otome is hard to pinpoint since it varies a lot and doesn't have set rules like people often say lolita has, eg: skirt must be longish, have the right silhouette (that being said these lolita 'rules' are broken and challenged all the time.)

For me, otome has a certain quirkiness to it that is often seen in the prints that brands put out and in the outfits that people create where they use unusual colour and or print combos.
To me it seems far less matchy-matchy than a lot of lolita which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just sets it apart.
Otome as a style has quite a range as well, sometimes you see very out there outfits and other times it's very toned down.

>> No.6904837

I've been noticing a lot of people trying to describe the difference between otome and lolita. It's not so much about what otome is specifically, it's about what lolita isn't. I know that lolita has begin to evolve quite a bit, however, a real difference between the two styles is the fit. Lolita is very very fitted, while otome tends to take more from modern casual styles with a looser more flowy silhouette where the clothing drapes the body elegantly rather than the very specific sort of formula lolita has.

>> No.6904845

>>6904815
Continued (because I'm an idiot who left out some stuff):

Lolita and otome do crossover which can make it hard to distinguish between the two. But honestly, I really hate getting caught up on categorizing and classifying everything to a t.

If you do really want to set the two apart though I often find that otome is a far quirker style that has a very laid back feel to it (I'm not saying that lolita isn't quirky, it's just that making this generalization can help with separating the two, otome also isn't a 'lazy' sort of laid back, it just looks sort of effortless.)
It's hard to express but an otome outfit gives me a very different feel than a lolita outfit.

Sorry for my ramblings, it's just hard to put into words and I need some sleep.
Apologies if I just confused you more.

some are, some arent.
both otome and lolita brands have good and bad prints.
otome can be a nice substitute for lolita prints.
>pic relevant; otome dresses i recently bought

i thought AP's drained cherries series sucked so i opted for MILKs cherry garden instead. im also a sucker for fishies so i got the mermaid print from ETC. lolita brands rarely do prints thatre underwater related , which is as often as they do sailor themes.

>> No.6905109

Am I crazy for thinking that ETC's pieces have an odd popularity?
I'm still a newbie to otome but when I look at the most popular and therefore pricey pieces it seems to be just the same few ones (normally prints that feature 'ETC' in big letters) popping up over and over again and everything else seems to fall by the wayside.
It kinda seems like two major extremes with not a whole lot of middle ground inbetween.

I'm trying to figure out what otome is as well. Would you say it's the eastern equivalent of twee? They share the same sort of quirkiness and color palette.

I'd say the main differences between lolita and otome is lack of petticoat, but also that otome hardly ever follows the exact-color matching of lolita.

'Twee like' isn't a half bad description for the confused or uninitiated, it is a bit of a simplification though.

Otome in a nutshell (the crap I was rambling on about earlier):

1.Cute
2.Interesting colour and print combos
3.Not very matchy-matchy (relates to the last point)
4.Laidback/effortless in comparison to lolita

Like I said earlier don't worry too much about trying to pinpoint/ over classify it.

Speaking of Jane Marple, does someone has any information about pic related or why it seemingly became so popular?
There's an auction at yahoo japan currently, someone bidding 96000 yen on it and there's still one day left to go. The dress itself looks very generic, JM releases something similar like every year... so what the hell is happening here?

Agreed. I was in japan recently and I had the most polite stare-off over a Jane Marple dress that was the last one in the store, which is honestly the most Japanese aggression I'd ever seen whiel being over there. Bitches be cray. (I got the dress, but probably reinforced the 'pushy gaijin' stereotype, whoops)

Hello! You must get this all the time but have you got any tips for a first timer? I really like this style a lot, I have similar pieces in my closet waiting to be worn. This otome looks very cute and frilly, without being too over the top girly like lolita, it seems.

So... Any tips? I would gladly appreciate it. Thank you!

>> No.6911082

>>6911046
otome is more about complimentary colors instead of matching the same shade like lolita. You still need a balance though, but not the same as like 'hair accessory matches shoe and purse color exactly' if you get my drift. The silhouette is more mature (not as much poof, more a-line) and the accessories should feel the same, more mature, a kind of vintage feel. The pallet can be a lot of things, but i would stay away from pastels. In reality, once you get the hang of it, I would say it's easier than lolita, but getting the hang of it might be harder in the beginning because it is a lot different in terms of coording. Shoes wise, stick with more 'classic' shoes that you see in lolita coords (nothing too frilly/with lots of bows or straps) and hair I would keep simple and natural, braids, loose curls, bobs seem to work well. Hope this helps. It's really something you have to look at a lot of pictures to get a good idea of what works. When I first started lolita I had no clue how to tell the difference but after browsing lots of these threads and seeing D_L posts with people who do both styles, it's pretty easy to pick out for me now.

Jane Marple fans have more of a collector mentality, even compared to lolita brand obsessives. If something was a benchmark print that sold out immediately when it was released, everyone has to have it for their archives.

but also, does anyone have any suggestions for otome on a budget? is it just basically taobao or are there other non-taobao shops (outside of japanese auction sites of course)?

>> No.6914725

>>6914703
I feel the opposite. Otome is more tone down and acceptable for casual outings. I have never got any negative treatments like the cases in the lolita in public thread.

If you are on a budget, taobao is an option if you know what you are looking for. Personally I feel taobao is too limited to put together a spectacular outfit. There's also axes femme, which I consider to be on the cheaper end.

Maybe it's just me, but I think it's pretty easy to do otome wearing clothes from regular stores and even from department stores.
Look for dresses like the one on the pic (which is from a regular brazilian shop), specially the colorful ones with cute prints. Add a peter-pan collared blouse, tights, cute accessories and voilà.
Of course, owning brand makes things easier. Maybe you should invest on key pieces. Though imo I'd rather pay $300 on a dresse I'll wear frequently than on one I'll wear once or twice.

>> No.6914739

>>6914703
If you're looking at cheaper alternatives, just remember to pay attention to how quality the construction and materials are. Seeming expensive (though it might not actually be expensive) is half the battle in getting the otome look.

This might be a stupid question, but how long can skirts be in otome? I ask because I thrifted a skirt some time back with a print that feels very otome, but it also goes down to my ankles, so I'm not sure how to coord it or if it would work since knee-length seems to be the standard.
