I'm thinking a layer of thin upholstery foam for comfort on the inside, with a layer of craft foam over that for structure, followed by the fabric covering over that.

The next con I'll go to is Sakura-Con 2014 and I'll debut my Titan cosplay then and there. I'm working on it now though so that I match my group's.

I spent three hours tonight marking out 95% of the foamcore pieces for three sets of 3DMG. Someone please kill me now, I haven't even started marking out the basswood, balsa, or xps foam pieces.

At least I'm enlisting another member of the group to do the cutting for me...

Look into something like a dance belt. I imagine these guys might wear an undergarment like that to keep their junk safely out of the way of pinching straps. Last thing you need while killing titans is for gnad to get pinched on a downswing.

It's carved/sanded xps foam for the hilt pieces, covered in modge podge and then plastidip (wansn't impresed by plastidip honestly). Blade is basswood for the main body and balsa for the detailing.

I'm currently working on my SnK-Cosplay but I have one big well lets call it problem. I wanted to do Levi. But the problem is my face, since I have a big nose and almost no character does fit me from SnK. I dont know If I should just keep doing Levi or better do my own character which is SnK Story unrelated!? I'm don't know whether to make the anime or manga version 3DMG. I got into the series a while back due to the manga and prefer the design more but I want to be able to fit in at photoshoots and not be the lone manga cosplayer. Shit's conflicting.

K guys. I've got a problem, well, not really my problem, and it's not really a problem yet...But my friend wants to do a SnK cosplay. The con is in a month and he hasn't even started making his cosplay. Like seriously nothing. I keep nagging him seriously every time I see him, telling him it's going to take a lot of work and he just goes ya ya I've got lots of time. I hate to sound like an asshole, but I know it's going to look bad, should I tell him? Let him go ahead and try? I'm considering doing Eren.

As we have heard, SnK takes place in fictional North America. However the architecture of Trost and Shiganshina(??) looks very much like that of Westphalia in Germany. Names are like 70% German, 20% English, Mikasa is known to be half-asian and stuff but then there is for example Eren who has a Turkish first an German second name, the name Hanji somehow doesn't even exist, Ymir is a name from Norse mythology and then we have hebrew names like Levi or Jean's super-jewish sounding second name. English seems to be first language, Sasha has the most redneck dialect of them all and I dont even know what the fuck to make out of a stupid name like [spoiler?] Historia [/spoiler].

The whole Animu is pretty much a fictional chaos of nationalities and I think ethnicity in cosplay should be the least thing to worry about.
Better take that time to worry about how to make the 3D gear etc.

I have a question for any of you engineers out there.

I'm making my blades soon, and I want to make the handles an actual mechanism to grab/release the blades. That way, I can carry all my blades in the holster, and my handles around in their holster, but If need be, I can reach down, grab any blade, and draw it.

Any ideas on where I can go?

Note, the handles will be made out of wood, and I do have access to springs, pulleys, switches, etc. Stuff you would find in a machine shop

I'd imagine that in their world the blades are held in the hilt by a combination of the mechanism squeezing on the tang of the blade (to facilitate quicker blade installation) and a peg through a hole in the tang (to secure the blade to the hilt). so you're probably looking at something with springs to help with the squeezing that are depressed temporarily by a small thumb activated lever. maybe not even using springs at all. I can't think of the proper term for it but you've probably seen those locks where there's pressure locking something in place when a lever is on one side but moved to the other side and the lever exerts no pressure.

I'm pretty sure the squeeze handles are more there for controlling the fans/gas needed for movement. That's not to say you can't use them for blade release. I'm not too savvy with engineering so I might just use magnets.

It's weird but solid poplar holds up pretty well. It only has issues with long extensions. Like I made one that's a sihlouette of my dog and a leg broke off after a few months. I later moved to a birch plywood which is stronger, but had a higher tendency for little bits of design to break off the surface. So I'm back to poplar. Most of time the edges get a little rounded after a lot of use.

(also good for cutting your thumb if you need to go titan)

I got a crazy ass idea, with the mass amount of SnK cosplays, how would a crossover cosplay of SnK + [random anime/manga/erc] be viewed?

Not the anons your talking to, but I was wanting to do something like this with my blades as well. My first thought for easy assemble/disassembling was using whatever thing they use in small flag poles, music stands and dress forms. Like there's two "pipes" and one end has a hole and the other has some small ball, and both ends lock into place when you line them up properly.

General question (not sure whether it was asked before): Fabric or leather for the jackets?
Logic tells me that in a society where food shortage is a thing, it would not make much sense to invest in a cow to make a jacket from it (even if you use it whole, one cow per recruit sounds like an awful lot of cows and since meat is a rarity... yeah). But maybe my guess is wrong and someone knows better?

I've noticed that some Japanese cosplayers are doing vinyl or other fake leathers but that doesn't make any sense considering how little leather the characters would have access to for anything besides belts and boots.

I found a good twill at Joanns fabric called Tobacco that is the perfect shade of burnt orange tan.

Definitely fabric, it seems that only people buying from Taobao have pleather jackets since most sewing machines will have a tough time sewing through a lot of pleather. Also real leather would be stupidly expensive to get.

I've actually been delightfully suprised by the quality of most of the AoT cosplays I've been seeing. Maybe a slightly off 3DMG here or there, but most everything I've seen has been pretty good..

On the leather versus cotton argument I'm adding my two cents. I think that the jackets would be cotton since a lot of leather would be going to the boots.

Think of it this way. Are you planning on cosplaying again? If so then you'll be putting about $200-500 towards supplies and a sewing machine. Don't hand sewn something like this unless you have incredible amounts of time and patience. In my opinion the sewing isn't as hard to learn as the propmaking.

Or do you just want one good costume to keep using again and again? Then you'd be putting that money towards buying the costume straight up.You'd save yourself the time and agony of learning a skill from scratch and potentially being frustrated with your final product.

Yep! Right now selling prints of the pattern is on hold because I can't find someone who CAN print it. There's the option of just selling a .pdf and letting people print it on their own but forcing people to tape 30+ peices of paper seems cruel.

And I'm using heavier midweight denim twill. I don't know the exact weight of the denim but I can find out tomorrow. I'm pretty much making a cropped jean jacket in the end.

More progress; commissioned 3 sets of Scouting Legion patches from one commissioner and another set of 3 large patches from another. Was not cheap. My Eren wig from Arda came in too, and I got their Jett. It's so... Kpop fluffy, so I need to iron that down.

And progress from our propmaster. I'm only in charge of uniform so I don't work on these. I just want to keep the thread going.

AX is three weeks now? Thinking about it gets me anxious, shit. I haven't been this excited in a long time and I never been confident in my appearence. But if I can't be cute/handsome/ photogenic, I can at least contribute to awesome costumes.

I got into this fandom a few weeks before AX so there was no time to plan anything. Two of my friends are cosplaying there too and I'm super jealous. Maybe I'll whip out Ymir for sakuracon since she's my favorite though I'm 5 foot 5 inches and she seems much taller than that.

I'm wading through a bunch of Taobao stores for patches. Most I found seem to have gotten the patches from the same factory, since the photos are similar (if not the same) and they're priced around 6 yuan each for the smaller ones and about 12-15 yuan for the bigger back patch.

This shop's patches seem to be the best after some searching around. It's DogEggG on Taobao.

Does anyone have experience with them?

They're selling them in 4 sizes; M is a bit bigger than S and LL is a bit bigger than L. The shop says M is for the sleeves while S is for the breastpocket, but I've only seen people using the same size for all three smaller patches. Are the sleeve patches actually bigger?

I'm 2cm shorter than you and I generally feel bad about cosplaying as female characters and all due to my height but when I did, I received extremely nice feedback. I think if you love a character a lot, you should not let your height stop you.
/cgl/ is always super nitpicky about heights and shit but people on conventions will probably be much nicer to you. If you want to cosplay as Sasha, go for it!
If the heights in your group don't fit, come up with clever posing to not make it glaringly obvious. If you are too tall you can always assume sitting/kneeling/lying poses in front of the others. You could also take pictures on the stairs or close to walls where you can place some characters on the wall!

Nah, the next minimum for the small ones is 500 and I am NOT handling that many. The small ones have almost hit 200, though, while the big ones haven't really moved (I'd says it's 50/50 on the price dropping). Here's the surprise; each sheath is less than 5lbs. Our propmaker made the frames hollow, and only one sword is real per sheath. The gas canisters are foam insulation noodles. I can't imagine being tired from walking with these and they're going to be removable from our straps.

Can't do anything about how much space they take though. Comes with the costume. We promise to be space concious.
