I've never cosplayed or gone to a con before, but I got a three-day pass to NYCC. Some questions:

1) Am I an idiot for getting 3 days when I have no idea what a con is like?
2) Any general tips/advice about what's fun to do, what not to do, general etiquette at cons?

>> No.6898239

>>6898229
No. I think getting a 3 day pass is good because you'll get the full con experience. Well are you going with friends? That will help a lot of things.

Go to panels you're interested in. Buy stuff. Meet new people. Be polite and don't act like an idiot. It's ok to fanboy/girl over something but don't be "that person." Don't take someone's pic without asking. Don't mess with someone's cosplay/props without permission. Basically common sense stuff.

Have fun anon!

I want to do a Derpy Hooves cosplay. If you know the character and have any suggestions on how to put it together, that would be great, but.

I have some felt wings and what I'm fairly sure are sculpty ears already from Fluttershy, and I'm wondering if I could recolor those.

I've been looking for some suggestions, so here it goes:

I've been planning on making Shiro's (Deadman Wonderland) bodysuit from scratch, but I've had a roadblock in a minor detail or two, one of which I want to get someone's opinion.

With the red design on her bodysuit (pic related), should I paint them on or should I bite the bullet and try to sew them on and cut through the white spandex so that the design comes through underneath?

I have some experience with spandex and making bodysuits, but I usually crossplay so getting the design in the right places (cough the boob) eludes me.

Any tips or help is very appreciated!

i would either sew them on overtop using a similar stretchy material, or paint them (and make sure to do a really good job on painting!). when you do paint/sew, make sure to have the main suit stretched over a bodyform similar in size to you. i would personally make a duct tape mannequin and use that as a base to work from. if you're cutting holes into the spandex, the stretching may pop the stitches, and the fabric will probably fray at the seams, as well.

Im using foam board to make a box, and I know how I'm going to construct it, but I'm not sure what glue I should use. I've heard that regular white glue doesn't dry all the way since air can't get to it, and hot glue and glue like gorilla glue eats at the foam. What's the recommended glue to use that won't destroy the foam and will actually dry and hold?

>> No.6899105

>>6899091
Superglue or epoxy glue? It might eat the foam, so be wary.

>> No.6899118

>>6899091
Neatly Gesso the surfaces of the foam you'll be gluing, then sand them smooth. Repeat until you have a few layers, then spread a layer of polyester resin (outdoors!) onto the surfaces you Gesso'd and apply pressure to attach.

Good luck! I'm doing something similar.

For the first time in my life, I'm gonna cosplay a character that isn't anime. How do I make my face look more like the character - what do I need to purchase. I try to wear minimal makeup everyday, so I guess I'll probably have to purchase something to contour with, right? Recommended brands and products? The second one looks good in my opinion, but the outer edge of the mask seems...off? It came out great, beak and all, but maybe sand down a bit towards the chin and give it a more venetian shaped style instead of round and it might look better.
Honestly its probably just me wanting to find something to help with, masque looks great for cardboard and mache.

First time posting here, apologies in advance if I manage to cause shit.

I'll be cosplaying for the first time in just under three weeks. I'll be wearing an off-the-shoulder top as part of it along with a strapless bra. Problem is, to get the top looking as much like the costume as possible, it needs to be pulled down at a level where the side of the bra (but no cup) is visible.

Is this considered revealing too much? Should I try to do anything to cover it up?

>> No.6899302

>>6899257
Depends, are you cosplaying a character just for to get the wank factor out of the boys? Honestly, if you like the character and it IS how the character dresses, do your thing but just be socially conscious and not get angry when people see your tits hanging out.
Things like Rue from princess tutu actually has a pretty revealing outfit but its tastefully done. If your trying for a 'sexy pikachu' or somthing, then you can shoot yourself.

If in doubt, ask "would I point at someone and be disgusted if they were wearing this?".

>are you cosplaying a character just for to get the wank factor out of the boys?

Absolutely not, I like the character and I have a boyfriend so I'm not exactly fighting for male attention.

>when people see your tits hanging out.

This I would kinda dispute. You can't see anything from the front, but if I turn to the side you can see the band of the bra through the arm holes of the top. You can't see any cup or anything, and if you could I would seriously rethink it.

Ideally I would like to think of a way to cover the band so it's not visible through the arm hole, but I'm not sure how realistic that is with a strapless bra.

The easiest and cheapest way is to put some straight piece of cloth over your head, then you start plastering.

Well, most bongs (especially if anyone made a piece that ridiculous in size) are acrylic, so if you leave the inside with an obviously paper mache finish, it would be easily defendable as a costume piece, similar to the exceptions with costume swords.

If you give it that shiny acrylic finish without touching the newspaper on the inside, you should be safe from anyone trying to confiscate it as a legitimate smoking device. (we are talking about Con security, however...make your own judgements on their level of common sense)

You're going to need to make sure that the entirety of the tail is sewn down in the circle pattern of the base, and considering the shape.. It shouldn't be too hard to keep it staying that way a long as you keep the material fairly light and the wire is curving right. It has a lot to do with the fabric you are attaching it to as well, a dress is going to be very difficult to stop it floating about unless you keep the wire going through a hole to your actual body

Definitely some (p)leather straps, one around your waist and one around your chest, to mount the main support rod of the sashimono to you directly, whether that be through threading straps through vertical loops on the rod or just encircling both the rod and you in one loop with some glue to prevent shifting.

Google "Quick n' Dirty Back Banner (Sashimo Banner)" since 4chan hates links to certain sites in case you need other pics of sashimono.

I know this is a simple dress for most cosplayers, but this is my first time making a dress in this style. Could anyone give advice or something for the top part? I am using four panels for the skirt to make it poofier (still using a petticoat)
But i'm not sure what to do about the top part and the poofy sleeves.

I'm pretty sure i can do this on my own. I have a few weeks, so no rush, but i wouldn't mind some help or advice from experienced cosplayers here.

Two questions.

1) I have a big head, and a bit of a receding hairline, so I've never found wigs that fit properly. Where you do recommend I go to have wigs custom-made for my big noggin?

and 2) I also can't see worth shit without corrective lenses, but costume prescription contacts are far and few between, especially for some of the more outlandish designs required of cosplays. Again, any tips on good places to go for this?

Much thanks in advance.

1. Big head as in how big. Arda is known for larger wigs.
2. I'm not sure what you want. If you want really outlandish lenses, it will cost +80$. Usually a pair of coloured contact lenses, prescription or not, will cost ~20$.

A little above average guy size, about 23.5 to 24 inches. My hat size is 7 1/2 (US). And cost isn't too much of an issue for the contacts, as long as they're not like 300 bucks or something. It's just every contact website I find they have maybe a twentieth of their stock available with prescription and they're incredibly common ones, like generic cat eye or something.

PLEASE use a wig, please please please please PLEAAASSSEEE. I know it's your first cosplay, but his hair really isn't that easy to do in real life and you'll be able to keep it in its style off your head. It'll just look better and be harder to mess up. Just get a wig. Get one. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Short-Golden-brown-outwards-spike-bang-cosplay-hair-wig-/160649340796?pt=US_CSA_MWA_Wigs_Extensions&hash=item256772677c might be a good one? You'll need to style it to get the flip using spray.

As for what you should do with the accessories, use your best judgement. Generally, making things yourself will look more picture accurate, but be harder work, and easier to mess up. Personally, I think you should try making the headphones yourself, since finding cheap headphones in that style is going to be very difficult.

This tutorial (http://sychunsa.deviantart.com/art/Headphone-Tutorial-199169256)) shows how to build a pair of headphones from scratch. You will obviously want to modify the design a lot, but it's a good way to get thinking about craft foam.

Foureyez is based in Europe, btw (I think the UK). I got my first pair from there. If you're buying your first pair, you will need to get a care kit with it (or from a local chemist).

And let your lenses soak in the case for a whole 24 hours and wash them in solution again before trying them on. Getting lenses in for the first time is hard enough without them being covered in the slightly caustic antibacterial solution that they are shipped in, and your cornea will thank me.

First, paint LAST, because otherwise your prop is going to disintegrate as the paint falls off and takes your parts with it, because whatever glue you use will be attached to the paint instead of the structure. It won't last a day, guaranteed, if you can even get it to hold together.

Second, try two-part epoxy, it's incredibly strong once it's cured. Just don't screw it up the first time, because you probably aren't getting them back apart without breaking something. I'd sand some flattened spots where the rings meet if you can, too, so you have a good surface to bond.

Do test pieces, always do test pieces. You could use some kind of filler after the fact to get a smooth appearance around the joints before you paint as well.

I'm trying to figure out how to do Vanellope's wand. I've never done resin casting before, and all the tutorials I've looked at are just simple shapes, nothing like cramming a dowel rod into a mold.

My current idea is to find a similarly sized cookie cutter or layer some wooden discs to the right size and mold around it with clay and then cram the dowel rod into the mold through one side. That way it's held in place and the resin is molded around it without compromising the mold. Or is that dumb?

1. Depends on the fit of the jumper. If it's a baggy fit, it'll look silly, but if it's just a tight pullover, you can probably get away with it.
2. You need to use ball-point needles with jersey if you are using a machine. You also need to take into account that it stretches. Your seams will be stretched from the feed dogs if you don't stabilize them, which will result in a lumpy seam. However, you need to allow the fabric to stretch naturally, so a stretch or zig/zag stitch is usually advised in areas that will experience movement.

My 11 year old little brother loves Ika Musume and wants to do a cosplay. I'm all excited, he's so thin and short and perfect, so I told him I'd sew it for him. I can make the dress easy, but that hair...
I would usually pull a wig into shape with wire or something, but that's a lot of work and money for a half-joke cosplay.
I was thinking about a fleece wig, those usually look like ass, but it might be more practical.
Anyone know how to make one not terribly?

What does everyone here think about embellishing costumes?

I like wire wrapping as a hobby and want to add extra details to the costume since the original is very basic. I plan on being mindful to the character and the original proportions. But, when I see other costumes and something is (missing/wrong/ different) I sometimes get really bothered.

I think it mostly depends on execution and the approach you're taking to adapting the character to 3D. If you're taking the more 'screen accurate' approach, extra embellishments can look kind of wonky, but if you're more 'real clothes' in your approach it'll probably look fine if it works with the rest of the outfit?

I feel like... it's okay, if the goal is to make the costume hyper realistic and effort is put into every part of the costume. Especially when it comes to female costumes. Like extra jewelery for a character known to be rich and most likely own/wear fancy necklaces and rings, or a well-made damask for an Asian style outfit, especially those Chinese dresses even if they don't illustrate such pattern.

But to start doting on unnecessary it might not look good. Adding in say 'new shoes' or hair accessories that don't exist nor even implied to exist. Picture not related.

Not saying this is a perfect method, (and sorry, I don't think I took progress pictures while I was making it), but I made the darker blue part first, essentially as a bra shape, using a stiff bra of mine as a guide for the pattern. I am NOT a seamstress, so this might even be ill advised. But basically I made the shape of that dark blue design, just the basic shape without really patterning it (but using my bra as size reference). cut it out twice, sewed them together and inverted them like a pillow so the seams looked nice and the weird.. dick hanging off the bottom looked nice too. Then I pinned it to the sides of my bra (while wearing it) and put four darts in- one on the bottom of each boob and one on the top of each boob, messing around with the pinning until it felt like it fit nicely against my bra. Sewed the darts (careful to make sure the seams still end up together, maybe do a basting stitch), flipped around so the darts were on the inside of the dress, and then applique'd the bottom of the 'bra' straight to the rest of the dress. For the weird side pieces I just applique'd long rounded rectangles straight over the 'bra.'

tl;dr, make a bra and then applique it onto the dress. Sorry if that's confusing, hope it makes a little sense. ;-; Clearly mine doesn't fit perfectly so I'm sure there's better methods

Damn, I thought so since shiny is a no-go 99% of the time. Mami's skirt is so hard to find material for. It's this strange yellow/tan/gold that's had me yanking my hair out for the last year.
I just realized though that the reverse side of the material isn't shiny and has a pretty interesting texture. I'm going back to Joanns tomorrow though, so I'll take another look at the suede and see what works better.

Sometimes I feel like choosing material is the hardest part of the costume.

>> No.6915793

>>6915780
Eh, I'm actually okay with shine sometimes (like on Madoka - I freaking love when people pile on swarths of tacky lace and satin). I just think that Mami is more down to earth, so a frilly, shiny, costume wouldn't suit her. The reverse might work as long as you're careful about how you line it.

Fabric is by far the hardest part man. Once you find that, it's just a matter not screwing up so you don't waste it.

You're probably best doing Leviathan with some kind of foam or a PVC pipe, then painting over it. You want him to be super light if he's gonna be attached to your wig, otherwise it'll get pulled off every time you bump into him. Is he actually attached to her hair in-game? Or could you get away with making him a prop to just carry around, instead?

Remember though, a lot of the skullgirl designs just wouldn't work in real life. Don't be afraid to make compromises if it means your costume will stay intact for the whole con. You don't want a super-accurate cosplay that falls apart the minute you walk through the doors.

As for the hand, try using body/face paint to outline the bones on a black background. It would look pretty neat, and if you decide you don't like it, you can always hide that hand in photos.

Lolita here. There are two types of petticoats, A-line and cupcake. The shape depends on how you constructed your skirt.

If your skirt was one long rectangle of fabric sewn into loop and then gathered to the waistband, then use a cupcake petti. If you don't, the top of the skirt (around the hip area) will have fabric bunched up weirdly since there's too much fabric and not enough poof there.
(Mine is from Dear Celine, if you go with Malco Modes, this may help: http://egl.livejournal.com/15603459.html).).

If your skirt was flared (ie- has curved edges, skirt sort of resembles a pizza slice with the point cut off), then use an A-line petti, otherwise the hip area will look strained because there's too much petti underneath while the skirt looks limp nearer the knees as there's more fabric and not enough poof there. A-line pettis: Classical Puppets, Malco Modes.

the exception to this rule, if you have a super poofy skirt (around 3 metres in the hem), usually the best is to layer a cupcake petti and an A-line petti together (layering two cupcakes tends to give you big hips but a loose skirt around the knees. Not sure about layering two A-lines though)

Basically a large circle or oval, with the sleeve opening placed off-center. You can make it less bulky and give it more of a shaped-drape by making it half an oval (cut across the longest part, not the shortest) and sewing the long sides together.

Hey guys, I could really use some advice on my first cosplay. I haven't got any pics of progress so far, because there isn't much.
I am doing my first cosplay ever as a gang member from Akira. Not a specific person, more of an original design that takes from the characters. I have my goggles and I am working on the weapon (the pipe with screws in it) What I am having trouble with is a fitting outfit. I was thinking about ripping the sleeves off a hoodie and wearing a longsleeve or baseball style tshirt under it, but I just don’t think that is good enough. I would like to add a little something to it. I kind of wanted to put the Kanegawa Wave on the back of the hoodie, but I can’t find any patches, and I don’t want to do a cheap iron on. Any suggestions? As for the rest, I was just going to wrap a white cloth around my face, wear jeans and boots, and maybe have some white wrapping around an arm or knee. I might also add some blood on my clothes and head. I guess I am looking for tips, suggestions and help. I don’t want to show up to the con as a randomly dressed idiot that no one will know what I am going for.

How important is accuracy of glasses on a cosplay? I'm throwing something easy together last minute but my hold up are the glasses. The character wears silver oval wire frames and and I have thin black hornrim frames. I'm trying to get this ready for AX (learned on Monday I would be able to go). Are the glasses a super huge deal? I don't know my prescription, but I plan on getting accurate glasses eventually, just won't have them in time for AX. Will it look super weird to have different glasses? In the canon it is a genuine German jacket, very similar to the M42 greatcoat.
If you can get your hands on one, you can cheat the collar into proper shape; only issue is that those things are very, very expensive(150eur+).

Protip from a fellow Günsche Cosplayer:
1: The quality of the guns is extremely important, take your time.
2: Get the correct boots, if possible, get the original.
3: Buy the coat to fit properly; in the canon, the coat can be seen to be very loose around the stomach but absolutely perfect around the shoulders, there is sadly no cut that would mimic this. If you have to go against canon, go at least for something that really suits you.

Actually, you can get brocade for pretty cheap at Joann. The trick to it: Find the coupons in the Sunday paper (there's usually a 40/50% one item) and then download their app if you have a smartphone. There's usually several more 30-60% off coupons and you can stack them.

I can almost guarantee that a satin is going to pucker wildly when sewing the trim on. Long straight seams often do, unless you are some kind of wizard with tension settings and have a feeder foot.

Lightweight craft foam/expanding foam for Leviathan. Also maybe look up some of the homestuck tutorails for horns since they have ones that help with attaching large things to your head.
For the skeletal hand make a armglove out of some tights and draw the bone details onto it. Also her back has part of her spine and internal organs showing.

Hey guys, I'm kinda stuck.
I want to start sewing but I'm on a budget. I want a good machine, that's dependable and something I can use, that won't break after the first few uses.
I plan to use it to sew the edges of shirts (like, fold the edge under then sew it closed) that I cut the sleeves off of,(mostly cotton shirts, like graphic tees.) and to sew fabric onto shorts to add patterns (like the comic book shorts and floral print shorts). So, I don't think I need anything too complicated. I wont be using it to make dresses or anything complex like that. Any help/experience? Any help is much appreicated.
I've tried a few google searches and read a few articles but I feel so lost.
I want to keep my budget under $100, if possible.
Also, do sewing machines need a lot of maintence/extra parts that need to be bought seperately?

>> No.6922907

>>6922869
If you are planning to sell the t shirts you make then you will need a cover seamer which is a specialist piece of equipment and not cheap
If you only want to make things for yourself then just get a sewing machine - buy a basic machine, you do not need 500 different types of stitch, the only ones required are straight and a zig zag with the facility to adjust the stitch size.
The only extra parts you usually need to buy usually are different foot attachments e.g zipper foot

I advise you invest in a few basic classes first though as you sound pretty confused about what you're doing - your sewing tutor will be able to recommend you a machine that suits your budget and direct you to places to buy them locally

Ahh I wouldn't bother with the cover seamer then

Take a few classes in sewing, if some of what I said didn't make sense then it's definitely worth your while to take them. By sewing tutor I meant the person who would be tutoring you in the classes should you chose to take them - you could teach yourself but I honestly feel that tutors are invaluable for beginners as they can stop you wasting money on terrible machines and correct mistakes

Sometimes it's worth shelling out a little extra cash for something better, you can get cheap machines but the money you would have to spend fixing them every time they break makes them not worth it in the long run.
Oh and Brother domestic machines are absolutely terrible, do not buy them

>>6923008
Do you mean a mini sewing machine? If yes then no do not bother. I own one myself and it's godawful, I prefer to haul my Janome around the country than take my mini. If you're unsure about getting a machine then perhaps borrow a friends until you are sure that this is what you want. The general rule with sewing is "go hard or go home" you don't have to spend $$$$ but you do have to invest in quality materials, hard wearing equipment and most importantly time + patience
