What she did is what sort of the first idea that popped into my head about making fairy wings. It's not bad, but it's also pretty obviously pantyhose stretched over wire. I might use that method anyway if I ever cosplay Crysta from Fern Gully since she's so cartoony.

I don't have any tutorials but I know that some types of cardboard boot inserts take a nice shape for a gun holster.

Pic related of some inserts that I found. Obviously they are way too huge at the top but if they are cut down to size then they might just work. I have never tried making them myself so I can't help you past that. Sorry!
