I was wondering, is 2P reall just a tumblr fanon thing? I really hate the fanon BS, especially because of my experiences with Beek, but is there even a like, side of the fandom that just uses the canons? I think I'd be much more likely to have interest in that side...
inb4 whiteknights saying I have no reason to dislike Beek and that she's a pretty perfect princess who's never done anything wrong, she's come across to me personally as brat. I don't care if you like her, I just really do not.

yeah it's pretty much a tumblr fanon thing, it's pretty annoying in my opinion. Can I ask what Beek did? Out of curiosity, I always get mixed information about her.

I do think it's annoying though that she's the one everyone focuses on in the tumblr fandom because there are some great people there, they're just not as well known.

Isn't she responsible for 3P? Some of 2P is canon, and I mean, I can accept that I just don't get the fandom. I understand the concept, but I got lost in the obsession with it on tumblr. I liked the characters as is, I didn't need 2P Nyotalia of an OC.

Hm, I used to not care one way or another, but had heard bad stories. I'm admin of unpopular-hetalia-opinions, though, and after someone ranted about her, Beek got really mad and it caused a bunch of shit. She dealt with it like a 2-year-old, I got anons for like a week telling me I was a terrible person for allowing people to give their unpopular opinions on an unpopular opinion blog(the opinion wasn't even very bad, either...just about them not liking how Oliver sleeps around), and it was an entire mess.
And then she tried to report me for "copyright infringement," despite her not owning Hetalia, the 2Ps, or the homestuck outfit she drew her OC in.
I've also seen other stuff, like her basically being a crybaby because someone asked her to draw USUK, and saying that it 'ruined her whole day,' but the thing with my blog is what really made me sure she's a complete brat. Wasn't even sorry about the anons. Didn't apologize for the stuff I got or anything, even though it was her shitty fans.

Himaruya was playing around with designs and came up with 2P designs for some of the Nyotalia nations (Axis Powers, Allied Powers, Prussia) as well as the male Axis Powers and noted that they reminded him of an evil organization of some sort.
The rest of the fandom came up with the designs for other characters and injected personality, background information, etc.
Anything beyond the designs by Himaruya is fanon.

Beek doesn't give a fuck for 3P. Like.. she doesn't attack those who run 3P askblogs, but she doesn't interact with them either.

Eh.. my whole stance on the Beek deal is that a lot of the shit she does is, yes, annoying, but even she can't really control her psycho white-knights. It's hard to say what you missed if we don't know how long you've been out.
Hima basically stopped updating in the middle of an event cold turkey for half a year and the fans started dropping like flies, then Homestuck got super popular so they all switched over. One of the last things Hima gave us were recolors, which started the 2P fandom. If it wasn't for Hima's absence, I'm sure the fandom would have forgotten about it, but people went with it because there was nothing else to do.
Birz started up(which is why Hima was busy) and hardly anyone pays attention to it, beyond a single issue where Prussia talks about how Germany came into being. The entire fandom thought, despite it flat-out saying the opposite, it canonized Germany = HRE.
The fandom is starting up again because of the new season, but a lot of these fans have only watched the anime, and lots of them complain about "the fanservice" and stuff, and are generally annoying.
Other than that, there's not much new things? It's been very slow these past few years.

THIS. But I think it's not just a Hetalia thing, I honestly believe that's just something the tweens and teens in fandom (the younger/newer generations) do. I think they have this need to make derivatives (of derivatives) to put their stamp on it, instead of how I think a lot of us "traditionally" interact and "mark" the fandom is by writing fanfic and fanart. They do that, too, but it's heavily AUs and OCs. I tend to like to manipulate the material and characters that are there, especially if the cast is big and diverse like Hetalia. I don't feel the need to add to it and be a unique, special snowflake.

>>6895598

Yeah, I was just on the Hetalia lj the other day to see what I've missed in the "Norway" tag and it was depressing. Remember the days when you couldn't even find where you left off the day before because there were so many posts? Remember when we used to celebrate character birthdays? And the lj com was so instrumental in Hetalia becoming this hit and forging that sense of community. I'm hoping maybe some of us who stuck around can get back to the roots of Hetalia and re-gain that sense of community now that some of the more weeby parts have moved on or at least the "migratory fans" mostly left (and won't be coming back, contrary to opinions on the rest of this board).

So from the last thread, I was talking about an alternative Hetalia panel I'm hoping to do for A-fest, so I thought I'd post a list of panel ideas I've had that deviate from the standard "Ask-A-Nation" / World Conference or 18+ variant of these. Feel free to use these ideas as starting points. I would love to see more panels that take Hetalia a bit more seriously or just go beyond character Q & A panels. My friend and I are still planning to host in the panel in cosplay and in character, but it's not like all the regular Hetalia panels you seem to see.

- Hidden History Behind Hetalia: Borrowed from the guys who wrote the DVD and manga historical notes, it's a panel where you discuss the actual history behind some of the events and jokes in the series.

- Cracktalia: Similar to the Hidden History, but you explain the historical evidence behind crack pairings in Hetalia. You could also go into more "canon" pairings to say whether they do/don't work out realistically.

- G8: A combination of a cosplay/character panel and presentation. Characters present current event topics featured recently in Hetalia or headlines/news articles that seem "Hetalia-esque." Think of The Daily Show or Colbert hosted by the G8.

- Game Show: Similarly a combination of cosplay and presentation, just series of games from a Hetalia perspective. It could be anything from Jeopardy to Hangman (the audience's character of choice), memory, guess the character, cosplay chess, etc.

- Hetalia cosplay panel: A panel about how to make the various costumes for Hetalia, specifically focusing on the military and historical aspects. So like your standard cosplay 101/201 but with a specific focus on Hetalia (hair curls, uniforms, flags). It would also be a good way to address Hetalia etiquette.

- Hetaquette: An etiquette panel devoted to Hetalia. How to be respectful as a cosplayer, but also a general fandom discussion about the state of fandom and how we can respond to negativity.

Tell me about it. Seriously, someone try out these panels. I could see Hidden History being a big hit and hopefully becoming like the AAN panels (you just have new history to cover every year). I don't think we should get away from being the characters, but if all it is is people trying to be in character and have the audience bait them for fandom stuff... it's old. I personally don't want someone forcing their OTP on me to try and get a rise out of the panel and audience. How about just in character hosting? It would be so much fun for one to be hosted BY a character instead of the panel being ABOUT the character.

These panels have the opportunity to change and have new content instead of the same stale pairing jokes. You referring to a group in particular? Your sentiments sound very much like those some of the other Texasfags had in the last thread.

>>6895743

Tumblr is hard to have that sense of community since it's so individualistic. I just don't connect with people because it's hard to talk and discuss. You share stuff and people share it in turn, but it's too individualistic and not communal enough. It also tends to breed special snowflakes and attention whores. The point isn't reblogs and followers, it should be making a connection with people who like the series.

I figured the panel would be "hosted by the character." It's a lot more fun that way, as long as you keep it from turning into an AAN panel.
Fangirls are so passionate about their pairings, man... Even if you approach a pairing in a "I don't support it nor am I bashing it, I'm just saying" sort of way, you'll still cause problems.

Aha, I am one of the bitter Texasfags. I really want to go to a con out of state just to see if the community is better elsewhere, but I do not have enough money for that.

Tumblr... forms community through reblogs, I suppose? It's not as organized as LJ, though, no. You can still make friends and have discussion, it's just messy to sift through.

Well, I'm a Texasfag who won't ever fit in, so consider A-fest if our panel gets approved. I will def make sure it doesn't turn into AAN panel, we may not take character questions, just ones about the panel and content. I mean, my friend and I will be putting a considerable amount of effort into the research to get it all right and still make it fun. No need to turn it into a lecture, and I love me some pairings and yaoi, but AAN is just old. That shit was fun in 2009 when we could all still be giggly fangirls about things because no one beyond us cared about Hetalia and it was still such a new series. But here it is 2013 and nothing has changed? Character Q & A is so outdated for cons, but people still want to do it!

The A-fest panel submissions have 7 Q & A (two of which are the Hetalia AAN and 18+) and then if you add in the few other panels where the point is "I'm in character, this is what's supposed to be fun" it's upwards of 10. Which may not sound like a lot, but these are just the user submitted ones for all the extra programming not taken up with guest panels and industry stuff. It just seems like a lot of panels where nothing happens except cosplayers answer fandom questions. No one TALKS about the series. It's all pairing stuff. I wouldn't mind half and half, but let's get a bit more "plot" happening in these panels.

>> No.6895765

>>6895763

Continued.

It's difficult, but the only way to change the way the panels are is to introduce new options and hope con organizers take a chance on the new panel. I know with how things can be in Texas, that's going to be hard since there is an established group, but I wish con organizers might see someone trying to do something different. A-kon had a Hetalia Improv skit panel which was terrible, but at least they tried and A-kon did give them a chance. They weren't involved with the DFW group at all (I think they were out of state) but at least it was something new.

I think an Improv Skit panel would work if you had like... series of words and actions in different hats (like, "character' hat/box "verb" hat/box) and you drew from them and then people had to act out the skit based on those weird combos. You could have a panel of characters but then you also let the audience come play in the skits, too. Which is kinda what the A-kon panel was doing, they just didn't have the prompt system it looks like. Even more fun if you let people submit the prompts online before hand, so people feel like they had a part.

Don't act like a homestuck fan. There's a reason the Hetalia fandom is so downlow now, and it's because all the crap fans moved on to Homestuck. Don't fuck that up.

>>6897849
Most of the characters have actual props, though, so I don't think that's a decent excuse. I mean, for Finland I have a moomin plush, a Floweregg plush and a riffle, and a spear for his baby outfit, and I normally take presents/a santa sack for his santa outfit (obviously I don't use them all in one go), for England I'll take a teacup or I've got a FMB plush, I hoard chicks for Prussia. Most of them have something that's going to be easier to pose with. Look at >>6897831 's picture again. The flag means that the photographer has to stand far back, it's not a dynamic pose at all (doesn't help that she's not holding it fantastically), and even that far back it's being cut off. Compare to >>6894214 this France. Obviously a better picture anyway, because photoshoot vs con photo, but it's easer to pose with and allows the photographer to get a closer shot without cutting off the flag.

And at the very minimum, if you're still so scared about flags, at least don't bring one of the massive, full-sized things. Use the pins that government officials wear, or use the tiny little flags like the ones people give children on the Fourth of July to wave around. Big flags are meant to be waving on a wall or a flagpole, not being carried around like a prop.

>> No.6898621

I've noticed that fewer people are carrying the big flags. I feel out of place carrying mine and it never does help people get my country (because Americans don't know their flags. I've had people call me England even though it's not a Union Jack and when it was rolled up someone thought it was a Confederate flag). I'm considering switching to a smaller flag that I can stick in my belt if I need to use both of my hands.

Big flags are also WAY obtrusive in panels. I feel bad trying to awkwardly position it while not letting it touch the ground. If it's a panel with a lot of room and not many attendees, I can lay it on across the chairs, but if the panel is packed, it's an an angle that I always feel disrupts someone's view. That's probably the biggest reason I'm going to downsize my flag, that and I just feel no one carries the big ones anymore. I kinda liked seeing all the flags at cons, but it's really hard to maintain and carry.

Norway. By now, I'm used to my fellow Americans being dumb about geography and flags. Usually I only get called England when it's other anime fans who are pretending they know who I am or have just seen the anime. Like I said, I'm going to downsize my flag so it's not so disruptive and easier to manage, but it's one of the few props Norway has. I sometimes carry around a small fairy Christmas ornament, but I can't exactly have a green troll floating behind me, and violins are so 2009.

I mean, I'm not sure I get the flag respect backlash. Didn't Hetalia fandom become all anal about flag respect because people were dipshits and treated them poorly? Personally, I'd rather be overly cautious out of respect then presume it's okay to not be so. All we're talking about is minding that it doesn't touch the ground, defacing it, and wearing it as clothing. I'd rather us be cautious and come across as overly respectful than weebs who can't properly manage their prop.

Agreed that both sides should be more sensitive. I think the problem is that everyone English speaking on the internet is assumed American unless proven otherwise, and I've seen British kids judged by the same rules as you'd judge American kids (ie 'omg how can they be so disrespectful they should know better!' when they legitimately don't know better because it's not a part of our culture at all - and yes I have seen people been insulted and called names for this when they wouldn't have known. Hell, I didn't know Americans were so caught up about their flag for a while after entering the fandom, and I was 19 at the time). The difference between us pops up in all kinds of little things and this is one of them. I assume it's the same all the other English speaking countries that aren't America. But like I've said all along, it's not a good idea to bring a flag because it just causes drama and there are better props instead. I certainly wouldn't bring a flag just to spit in the American's faces, because that is just being a douche.

I mean, if it's an all ages event, people need to keep it PG-13 or less. So I'd just say if someone asks something that mature, tell them this is an all ages panel. You also have the right to refuse to answer.

As far as the current story... the people who go to AAN panels probably just watched the anime. They expect you to perform as the character as they know him/her. So anything "current" will be news to them. Anything manga related will still be news to them. These are the people who have reduced AAN panels to one dimensional parodies of these characters (okay, the series doesn't have a TON of depth to the countries, but it's more than the anime. They are MORE than pairings and jokes).

Which character are you? Honestly, you could probably get away with saying, "I'd never desecrate my national monument that way! If that's your thing ask, [insert a character you want to rag on]." But that just creates a cycle. Hopefully it's an all ages panel so you don't have to deal with too many sexual shippy questions.

And here's another of my most favorite Norway cosplays.

France. No one really likes him though, so maybe I won't get any questions and I can just sit there pretending to be cool or something.

I have no idea what's going on with this 2P stuff, but you say its not relevant so I won't worry, thanks

Oh well, I don't consider 2P to be the "current story." And no one can blame you for not keeping up with 2P seriously. I think people do like France, they just perceive him as a pervy who will have sex with anything that moves. If you have any Fr/UK fans you may get some attention, and usually people like to have Russia pick on everyone, but I guess just perfect the fake French laugh and love on everyone? Just be stuck up France and you're good to go. Whip out some current events and whine at Germany for making Europe deal with austerity and "zhat is not somezing we French can do!"

Or like I said, turn the fandom baiting around on another character. France would totally bail at the last minute to save himself anyway. You can easily rag on Germany, England, and America and definitely be in character. But be prepared for people trying to get Russia and any character into an "altercation."

Also, for some reason, I just remembered a remark my world civ professor said that, at the time, struck me as a bad fanfic waiting to happen, but I laughed anyway. During all the Franco-Prussian stuff in the mid to late 19th century, "France was a whore panting at the door of Russia" (trying to appeal to Russia for an alliance and aide).

But you always have a right to refuse to answer a question if you feel uncomfortable.

Gonna post a Nordic picspam. Enjoy!

So anyone working on Hetalia cosplays for the rest of con season? What cons are you going to?

I haven't decided on which Norway I'm going to bring to A-fest (depends on if the panel gets approved or not), but I'm hoping to add a shield to my Viking outfit.

Also, how active are your local coms? Hetalia has been around for a while now, so I'm just curious how communities around the world (and in America) are faring. Do y'all still have meetups, or is it just for Hetalia Day?

I am not that active in my new com (moved to a new state) and have yet to attend Hetalia Day with them (missed it last year because of a company party).

Mine's not completely dead, but very scattered. We hold meetups occasionally, I think? Not during con season though.

I haven't been with this group long enough for Hetalia Day.

Not sure if any anons from the thread last week are hanging around, but the Hidden History panel I submitted for A-fest got approved. So we will definitely be able to (post con) give advice to other Hetafags wanting to offer alternatives to AAN panels.

So if you're a Texasfag, come see the panel at A-fest!
