I think wa and qi should just be struck from lolita all together and be it's own sub category of fashion. I feel like it could have potential if better fabrics were used and it had set rules. Maybe instead of lolita shoes being used, diffrent types of geta shoes and knee high tabi in traditional patterns? Just throwing out ideas here. Doesn't change the fact that it will still attract weebs but I think separating it as a sub style of lolita fashion all together would do go for both parties.

I think Wa lolita looks super cute in artwork but something about it just doesn't work as well in real life.

In highschool I got called to a meeting with my dean, vice principal and principal to discuss how my gothic lolita inspired daily clothing choices compared to gang members wanting to wear gang colours and people who want swastika tattoos. That they need to "bring in the edges of our choices to better fit normal society". When I pointed out the school dresscodes only specify no cleavage, no spaghetti straps, skirts no higher then 5cm above the knee, no bras showing and no torn or dirty clothing I was told it was more of an "unwritten rule". All of my teen rage.

There's a few Taobao brands putting out really cute, wearable qi-loli things, but I still get the feeling that no matter how well done a coord is, it's still a difficult look to pull off because it gives off the vibe of "I wish to be Asian". I get lots of secondhand embarrassment from that.

I feel like wa loli has potential, but almost every piece I see looks like complete shit. Prints are almost always garish, ruffles and lace are cheap and or not matching the pattern in any way, the sleeves look stupid, etc.

Lolita and kimono styles(?) are polar opposites. You have to meet somewhere in the middle to make it have any chance of working. Throwing up lace and frills and calling it wa loli will never look good.

Going to attempt to post more "decent" wa lolita coordinates. I personally like the style, but feel because it is more costumey, it works best in moderation. I think in general, wa loli needs more actual kimono elements. Wearing kimono, much like lolita, has a lot of general rules to follow and THEN you can start to experiment. I also think for wa lolita people should wear a smaller obi, otherwise it completely takes away your midsection.

I just feel like pieces where people actually interpret kimono fashion and just make it lolita look better (i.e. where it's clear they also understand how to wear kimono) than the weebs who wear it because it's "so Japanese and kawaii." Wearing kimono is very elegant, and I think wa loli can be done, too. But think of how many weebs buy a kimono and wear it improperly? Or make their own out of cheap JoAnn's brocade? Or just as bad, all the really terrible homemade yukata out of cotton prints that are SO no kimono appropriate.

Do any wa loli enthusiasts on this thread also wear kimono? I only own 3 (2 furisode, 1 regular kimono) and then I have 2 yukata, but I only wear my kimono to Japanese festivals or similarly appropriate Japanese cultural events.

I think the keys here are that the first one is very traditional. It's very much kimono inspired in the styling as well. The other one is simple and well coordinated from a lolita perspective. Not sure if the coord is handmade or they bought it.

Black x pink/purple/etc is a VERY popular yukata color scheme. As long as it's not OTT, I think a lot of the "bittersweet" color schemes would work using this mentality. I also think a really simple, but beautiful, wa loli coordinate would be a black lolita skirt (tiered, ruffles, etc, whatever you like, just all black and probably with minimal lace--lace doesn't really go with kimono) and then taking one of the fashionable black x pink/purple yukata and shortening it to be the top. For the obi, I'd do either pink or purple and have accessories to match. I think you could do the geta, but RHS give the geta "height" without looking weird and un-loli. I think wa loli looks best with RHS, the geta are too costumey to me.

I also think making sure the sleeves in wa loli are the regular/non-furisode xxl length helps balance it out. Otherwise it looks very costumey and I don't personally feel furisode length sleeves are appropriate. Because the length of them makes it more formal, but you are wearing a shorter skirt, which despite how elegant lolita can be, is not formal when put in terms of kimono. Maybe that's hard to explain, but a furisode is the MOST formal type of kimono an unmarried woman can wear. To put sleeves like that on a wa loli outfit just doesn't follow kimono guidelines (not that wa loli always does, but you know).
