My friend and I just went in rave gear. I was pretty taken aback by how many pictures were taken of us anyway. It was strange.

As far as the convention this year, I had an okay time. Hallway traffic was terrible and the staff was rude. But the improv shows and ocarina concert pretty much made up for any missteps.
Plus I got a kick out of all the Bookers and Ellizabeths.

The hallways were shit. The hotel I was at was fine. The parties were fine. The panels had such long lines I only got to one of them. The people were fine. I had a lot of fun, and there were a lot of hot dudes making out with each other.

The dealers room was mildly shit, but better than last year. The game room did not allow anything but magic until I bitched and moaned about it Friday and Saturday. Got to see the con ops room and was not too impressed by their organization, but not surprised either. Trolled the dating panel, and over all had a decent time. Not worth the money to go, will probably do san japan instead.

Con was pretty damn sweet! Met a ton of friends I haven't met in awhile and made some new ones and for lunch everyday it was some type of booze.

Only real down side was me having to go back and forth and scheduling what times to hang with friends and having tons of people texting calling me which killed the batteries on my phone but besides that a truly fantastic con.

Drinks are on me next time Smoker!

Allow table top to hav other table top games that are not just magic

have registration rooms sectioned by last name or mail pre reg badges allowing for regular reg to have a full room, though if you had one or two rooms more for reg it would be easier. Four hours in line was a lot for me, and five hours for my friend and that was Friday.

Lines for panels shit cannot really be done about because of the fact that there were so many people.

Lines in the halls were handeled well at only one very brief point in the con. A short slightly fat woman with short brown hair who was staff was directing the longer lines in single file, one on each side of the wall, and it actually went a lot faster than people trying to rush past each other in masses.

The game room this year was great, and the space was great, but it could have actually been a bit smaller and used for something else, though the amount of space was really, really nice.

Only having free for alls in the game room for most tournys was also a complaint in the game room, but it was not a big one.

Also apparently steam punk is not allowed next year or something?

Steampunk is allowed. There was a panel along the lines of "The Future of Steampunk at A-Kon" that was run by a top staff woman who's a Steampunk nut. She was somehow convinced everyone thought Steampunk was banned from A-Kon so she decided to dedicate an entire panel slot to explain no, it's not banned.

It was a waste of a panel spot.

Speaking of panels, if you want to host one, you need to jump on that shit VERY early. As in no later than August or September. Otherwise, no panel for you.

Illa Scriptor (one of the guest judges) here! I know that I and Ana Aesthetic were both given the option to be at pre-judging if we wanted to. I personally would've loved to have seen many of the costumes more up-close. However, I know Ana A. had panels during the pre-judging time and I was getting myself and my group ready for our showcase skit, so having it from 10-4, while convenient for the cosplayers, was bad timing for us. I could've showed up for part of it but didn't want to get to see craftsmanship on some but not all that showed up, if that makes sense.

Sweet Ma and Caroline (I forget her cosplay name!) definitely did share craftsmanship notes with us while we were judging, though, and the pre-judging factored heavily into final decisions. As a cosplayer myself, I was thrilled to see A-Kon finally step forward with craftsmanship judging and I'm glad to hear people had good experiences with it. :)

>> No.6890145

Why are they scheduling cosplay panels during pre-judging if the judge should be available to judge? That should be basic shit. If you were too busy with you little skit to do your job you probably shouldn't have agreed to preform.

Actually, my job was partially to put together a showcase skit. As it was Ana A.'s job to run panels. The craftsmanship judges were able to take all that time to run pre-judging because their job is to remain in the room that judging took place in. We still did receive the craftsmanship notes and weren't responsible for any craftsmanship decisions. *shrug* I thought it was pretty well put together, but then again I'm just a white knight.

For what it's worth, it just really wasn't feasible to have all of the judges there the whole time. That's 6 hours of prejudging time, and the 4 judges that were in the room needed to do things like run to the restroom, grab a bite to eat etc, from time to time. Still they were in the prejudging room and more often than not, 3 judges were prejudging all at the same time. As to the other two judges, they were busy running panels etc so they weren't available during that day. That is a MASSIVE chunk of time, honestly.

Still all of the judges during prejudging took very detailed notes, and there was definitely a sense of uniformity as far as what questions were asked, what things were being looked at etc. And all of those notes were definitely consulted during the final judging.

I feel like selecting people with costuming degrees and giving contestants a 6 hour window to come in for prejudging is definitely sensible. Why where there cosplaying panels during that time? Because it was a *six hour window* on saturday. Why on Satuday? Because that's the main day of the convention and the day of the cosplay competition. There are just so many hours in a day. If two of the six judges weren't in the room for craftsmanship judging, I think that's okay, especially considering the detailed notes that the other judges took down.

Judging cosplay pretty much takes up the entire Saturday, and cosplay panels are very popular, so they were scheduled on a Saturday. There was going to be overlap, but I don't think this is a case of A-kon not "utilizing judges".

That being said, those judges that weren't present at the prejudging had a great eye and were able to pick out details that were in the prejudging notes just from their vantage point below the stage. They know what they're doing. I also appreciate that A-Kon makes an effort to pick judges who know about costuming rather than just guests who are going to pick hot chicks.

Other cons manage it, they have cosplay guests that run panels and are available for the full judging block. Honestly I think Akon is too lax, here they are paying to fly someone out from Florida and she only worked for what, 5-6 hours total? That's less than a standard volunteer and they don't get travel covered.

>> No.6891165

>>6891079

They're paying for experience and what the guest is bringing to the convention. Panelists only need to put in about 2 hours to get a badge. The difference is that volunteer work is like the minimum wage employee of the con world, you have to work harder to get the same as someone that's bringing more to the table.

>> No.6891480

>>6891165
haha, I don't think you know anything about how guests are supposed to work. The con is paying for their travel, their room and in some cases an appearance fee. They get free food and drinks all weekend. All a panelist gets is a badge. Guests should be found 2-4 hours of work a day, not all weekend.

>> No.6891492

I was a bit disappointed in Akon this year compared to last year but I expected there to be problems because of the relocation. Hopefully they fix the line problems, lack of food, and how hard it was to get into some of the panels.

But overall I still had fun, I even got recognized as Misty a few times and asked for pictures on the second day even though it was kind of a last minute cosplay so that was cool.

I was looking for really good Hughes cosplays the whole time and I only got a picture with one I really liked even though he was kinda short. But I heard of others.

And when I went to the Misfits' improv panel I got picked to do one of the skits where you have to move their body for them, that was really fun and one of the highlights of the con for me. The asian guy (can't remember his name dammit) even kinda flirted with me when I got on stage haha. x)

>> No.6891499

>>6891480

Haha way to miss the point, faggot. They have more given to them because they bring more than a simple volunteer. The amount of work you do is outweighed by what you offer. That's why they only have to work a few hours and get everything given to them. Panelists only have to work 2 hours and they get a badge. Volunteers may work up to 12+ hours just to get a badge. So it's not about time worked, it's about what you can offer. Guests>Panelists>Volunteer. Don't get your jimmies rustled because you'll never be invited as a guest to a con.

>> No.6891510

>>6891499

Also, to be a guest you have to build up a massive amount of experience, on top of everything else you do. Volunteers work for a weekend and that's it. Most guests do this for a living.

Some guests get the full deal (usually only high end industry types, Japanese guests and voice actors). Just as not all panelists are created equal neither are all guests.

On that tangent, I remember there was this huge circlejerk (literally a circle) of homestuck cosplayers outside. I was in Atrium 1 and I can confirm my room and a friend's room lacked ice buckets, hair dryers, iron and ironing board, spare blankets/sheets, tissue cover containers, desk clock, and the soap dishes. When calling the front desk, they told me they were "unavailable". I just wanted a hair dryer. The damn rooms were $214 a night with all the taxes (parking not included) and no hair dryer.
