I was wearing some super-dark red nail polish that stained even through my thickest base coat. I've tried nail polish remover, soaking my nails in hydrogen peroxide, and buffing them down, but they're still stained and damaged.

The con is in a week. I'm a girl and all but one of my characters are male. Would it look too bad if I painted my nails thickly with a neutral polish the same shade as my unstained nails? Would it help to put a matte topcoat over, or is it possible to mix a regular and a matte topcoat together to only cut the gloss down a bit?

I don't want to be that girl cross dressing with a French manicure but ugh it'd look terrible to use my natural nails right now! What should I do?

Did you try joining the top parts? I know it's probably a dumb question but it looks like you sewed the sides and not the top. If anything, pin them together, try on, and then sew if it fits right.

Following the directions that come with patterns is also helpful. I don't mean it in a sarcastic way-- I also just finished my first item from a pattern and I did a lot of mistakes.

H-hey guys. I promised my friends that I'd cosplay Hetalia with them for an upcoming con in June (as much as I don't want to, I have to in order to return a favor). So I just got a wig in the mail, and it's really pretty and looks high quality. My only qualm is that at the top of the head, by the part, you can see the fleshy color of the wig's fabric, and since it's a dark red wig that makes the "skinlike" part really visible.

What are some things I can do to make the fleshy part less visible? Makeup or some marker or what?

I asked this previously in another thread but I have come across a few problems.

I'm making a motorized patriot cosplay from Bioshock Infinite.

Anyway, I plan on having the back wheels actually move, or at least have the ability to move for a little bit for the sole purpose of videos/etc. I've looked into DC and servo motors and directly mounting them to the wheel but the problem is the wheel forks don't have enough room for me to just shove one in there. I know I'm asking for a lot when I say this but, does anyone have ANY robotics experience and could toss some ideas my way? It doesn't have to be elaborate or even look exact, I just want the damn wheels to move haha. Pic is what i'm working with, all unpainted and they're mounted on the forks with bolts as placeholders until I figure out how the fuck to do this.

thanks in advance.

I got this shirt since it's basically what I need, only I want it to have 1/4 sleeves (just above my elbow).

At first I was thinking of shortening the sleeve, but then the cuff won't be able to close over my upper arm. I could try to extend it, but the extended bit would lack the nice ruffle and the placket would gap open.
Though I could take out the buttons and replace them with button holes then connect the two with decorative ribbon and leave it open...though that seems a little strange.

On the other hand I could attempt to reconstruct the cuff on the upper arm, but I've only sewn sleeves to shoulder seams and done simple cuffs. I've never done anything this advanced, nor have I worked with this style of pleat before.

So does anyone know of any good tutorials or have some advice for me? I'm aware it might just be better to leave the sleeves as they are, unfortunately.

Well shit, I just posted this on the progress thread and didn't see the help thread right below it.

Anyway, I'm working on leather wings. They are pretty simple, I'm just gluing two pieces of leather together with a wire structure in the center for support/posing.

My question is this: On the top of the wings, how do I attach the pieces without the seam looking too obvious? My first choice was glue, but I don't know if glue would be strong enough especially if I'm only gluing the very edges. Sewing is the other option, but I'm pretty inexperienced with that, plus this is my first time working with leather. Anyone got any ideas?

Bias tape may be your best option. Depending on the shine, you may not do too badly to just use a ribbon that may be easier to match than bias tape. I always enjoy playing with texture on tiny details like trims as long as it's close to accurate.

A trick I've used for tricky material is to put a piece of paper/tissue paper in between the pieces of material to be sewn, and then it won't stretch around. You can use a water bottle to spray the paper afterwards and it melts off the seam so you never see it again.

What kind of needle are you using?

>> No.6853839

Flex + paint = no go. Dying real leather or getting a shiny pleather may be the closest you can get to that, and you can reinforce it with craft foam that would maintain some level of flex, but paint will chip and not look like armor. Spandex stretched over something if you get the right kind of metallic MAY work, but for what you're looking like doing, you're just going to probably have to suck it up and insert a TON of joints/connecting pieces. I've done full body armor and it sucks. Good luck.

I just tried a test swatch and set my iron to kill and pressed it for much longer than recommended and am waiting for it to cool to see if it holds any better.

I'm trying to bond really thin jersey knit to a uniqlo sweater that's about the same consistency as a mid-weight jersey knit.

I want to post a contact review on Tumblr but am a noob and don't know how I should do it.

>> No.6856471

>>6856457
You can combine pictures in one picture-post, if the images aren't too big. It's probably easier if you do 'text post', though, and then just add images as you go...

What do you mean create a new blog for reviews? I mean, you can create one if you think you're going to be posting many reviews 'bout stuff, but it's not worth the time if it's just a once or twice thing.

Mmhm. I prefer those, but doing it in different posts also has its benefits (more people will see it because you're posting it at different times and not all at once). If you want a new blog, have 5-10 reviews on hand? A brand new blog with one post feels... lacking.

Errr... I would just restart. There isn't much you can do that would make it smoother and make it lighter. You can always add more plaster, but that will just make it heavier and even more rounded.

Try drafting out an isometric of it, then make a 2D rendering of those faces, scale some of its face contours, then cutting out the shapes in cardboard. When you tape the cardboard together (assuming you did it correctly) you should have a nice 3D sword. Covering over the cardboard is up to you. I would recommend not using plaster, as it tends to make objects weigh more than 55 lbs.

You'll need to go with a lace front wig to get that smooth natural look, try this one here in the platinum or ash blonde. You'll have at add extra hair in order to make his front pony tail.
http://arda-wigs.com/products/cady

Your other option could be to go with a longer version, and then it's a matter of cutting the back to a shorter length (leaving a long part at the front, which will be easier to add extensions to if you need to) and styling it.

I have the same problem with a cosplay i'm doing. best thing I've found to fix it is to just cut the boot from the top to the ankle, fold it over itself till it's tightened sufficiently, and then superglue it in place. crude, I know, but it works fine for me because my boot is covered from the ankle up by a pair of pants anyway. Tried fabric painting for the time today and I'm quite ashamed of the results considering I used contact paper for "clean edges". Don't have time to retry it so i was going to go in and line the edges with black acrylic paint but not sure if that's a good idea or not. Thoughts?

Try freezer paper next time. I usually get good results with it. Also, paint away from the edges and use little paint on the brush. You might need to do 2-3 coats, but it helps keep the paint from seeping in.

If you plan to remake it then it's probably not worth trying to clean up. Painting over that much will look about as sloppy.

I'm working on a stephanie brown robin cosplay and I have everything done but the cape. It seems so simple but I'm tarding out.
I found a good tutorial on youtube for a circular robin cape, which would have been perfect until I found out that the width of my fabric (45in) is too small and they cape would barely come to my butt (was hoping for something more knee length). Yeah, that's some type of motocross armour. I don't know how much you're willing to spend on it, or how'd you go about getting some for fairly cheap, though.

Okay, so I just got my Madoka cosplay from Cosplayfu and when I had attempted to try it on the sleeves were extremely too tight, being said that i separated them at the seam but con is 2 days away and I was wondering if there was anyway I could make the sleeves bigger, when I attempt to put the sleeves back together?

I have, it works pretty well! I used cornstarch rather than talc and used waaay more fabric softener but let the wig soak for less time (2 days rather than 5 because it was for a con and I was running low on time), and the wig still came out pretty great.

What kind of style of wig is this called, with the two little pigtails like this? I see them used for Asuka and Misa Amane. A wig in this style, but in black, would be really useful for something i'm thinking of working on, but, I don't know how to search for it!

I'm going to be cosplaying Ahiru/Duck from Princess Tutu in the near future, and I'd like to figure out how to make her huge ahoge/cow-lick. I've found a few tutorials online, but they're mostly for the much smaller Hetalia-type curls, and not something nearly as large.

Should I go with what tutorials on similar but way smaller ahoges say?

I'm planning on cosplaying Cirno from Touhou Project and I need help with the dress. It seems simple enough to sew, but I have no sewing experience. Could someone describe this dress to me, or show me a sewing pattern I could use for it? I'm male also so I have no idea what I'm doing.

Although I have a lot of sewing knowledge, I'm still really bad with fabrics. What should I be looking at for her orange parts? And should I just take yellow fabric and fringe cut it, or do I need to take the string, loop it around, fuse it, cut it in half, and attach it?

It honestly looks like it might be made of orange suede. Why don't you just by yellow fringe?

Yeah you can usually get coloured trim like that with a corded edge. Check the drapery section.

I totally second anons suede suggestion but you'd probably have to check online for that.

The skirt type is a called a circle skirt
here's one tutorial on how to make one
http://www.danamadeit.com/2008/07/tutorial-the-circle-skirt.html

If you could find a pattern shirt top of similar shape, you could mash that and the above together to get your dress.

Check simplicity.com in their easy section

Small rectangles of terrycloth in the colors you need. Sew them together lengthwise in the order they appear on the bands. Bring one long side of the resulting rectangle to the other one, right sides out, and sew to make a tube. Then sew together the ends of the tube so you have a circular band.

Thank you very much, I think the top part will be pretty easy to make, I'll worry about that later. The skirt looks like a great beginner project, I think I can do it.

>> No.6894335

>>6892882
Sorry if you already got your answer, but since you're a beginner, I would suggest you measure yourself (You're probably going to want to pad a little too, unless you look like you're 12, even for Cirno, so get a bra or something for the measurements) and go to JoAnns and look through the pattern books for a dress in the general shape of the top. I think you can do better than the pic you posted, the top part is really shapeless. Maybe look for something like:
http://www.simplicity.com/p-8864-misses-miss-petite-amazing-fit-dress.aspx
It's easy to change the neckline, just cut it differently when cutting the fabric. This pattern has darts down the bust which is more flattering, too. And when you add the skirt, don't use the one from the pattern, instead add a circle skirt like >>6893870 suggested instead, but use the same directions if you can't figure it out. And you could make one out of white too, if you want to layer them, and just cut the blue one into points when you first cut it into a circle.
Your pic doesn't have a petticoat though. It would look 1000000x better if you went to Goodwill and found one or sewed a circle skirt out of tulle to make a simple one.
I'm sorry if I over described. I just love Cirno cosplays.

Sorry, I actually wouldn't advise using >>6893870
for the skirt, you can't put the elastic band on a dress without it looking weird. Instead, cut the same formula that's in the link, but make the circumference your actual waist measurement instead.

Wow, thanks a lot! I'm really determined to make this cosplay work and look good (I'm researching makeup, feminine facial features, etc to actually pull it off). Yesterday I spent several hours looking at drawings/cosplays of cirno, patterns, and the less difficult parts of the cosplay to do like wings and a wig. That stressed me out a lot and I got really discouraged, so I'm really thankful for your help and the help from >>6893870. Gonna take a trip to look for patterns and fabric soon. I think adding a petticoat is a great idea too; thanks for that and also for catching the part about the elastic on the skirt. Also I have this thread saved so I don't lose your advice. Awesome, this is going to work.

I want to cosplay as Nano from Nichijou and my biggest feat is the screw/wind up on her back. I emailed the company who used to make these and they don't anymore. How should I go about this? Especially getting it onto my back.

just construct it like what you have on the picture. Wiring to keep the shape of the wind up. have a wider base for the windup to hide behind the white patch so it'll be secure against your back.

Hey /cgl/! I'm currently cosplaying Tcc- Tan from 420 chan, but her cosplay seems a bit... Boring, and I wanted to add something. Since I'm in the Florida area, I thought It would be a neat idea if I added a little something to the outfit. An idea hit me and I was wondering if anyone knew how to make some type of mushroom umbrella? Also, I'm cosplaying with a quite large (She's a hefty... 180ib ish?) gal who's going as an Ivysaur next con so I was wondering if the two of us could collaborate something with each of our cosplays. Tips are -very- appreciated.

I'm currently working on Belldandy, and I am curious to see how other seagulls have executed her wig and how?

I have looked around and found not any good ponytail wigs with the proper long bangs on the front, so I thought to buy a longer base wig and then a separate ponytail. What other ways are possible to execute this wig?
