ConBravo! is upon us in just under two months!
- Who's going?
- What're you cosplaying? (if you are)
- Who's in for Mario Party this year?
- Anyone arranging rooms/rides? Hotel is apparently almost booked full

>> No.6870669

I'm working this con, might cosplay but not sure yet. I'll be staying a friend's place

>> No.6871041

My boss wants me to cover this, do interviews, get pictures, stuff like that. Looking over the guestlist, it just screams sperglords.

Is it as bad as I'm imagining?

I'll probably drive up for a day or sleep in my car. If I go may may just reuse my Tim Hortons armor

Nah bro. It's a chill con. Lotta partying it up

>> No.6871812

I'm going for at least one day and probably helping out with panels or events if I can. Been going since the first year and it's pretty chill and friendly.

Looking forward to Mark Meer in particular.

Went to ConBravo last year and didn't really like how it was run. Skipping it for APOP and maybe even Otakuthon and FanExpo

anyone else having hard time believing that all these "don't wanna go to Bravo, doing APop instead" posts popping up in one night are a coincidence?

these cons don't even have the same niche or demographic at all. IDGAF who started or perpetuated this wank but it needs to fucking stop.

I've never been to Con Bravo. But I remember seeing AVGN and the Nostalgia Critic being guests years ago. Who's coming this year?

Or maybe some people just don't feel like going to ConBravo or can't afford both it and APop and feel like APop appeals to their particular interests more? Stop making the wank worse by bringing it up again.

I usually check it out for a day and have a good time but there are things that could stand to be better:

Panels are definitely more interesting and better organized than Anime North but that is not exactly hard to do. More cosplay and photography-related ones would be nice.

Better guests if possible. Snagging big personalities from Channel Awesome was good for them but they need something else because Doug Walker and AVGN's fanbases can get a little mouth-breathy. Why they still humour Spoony is beyond me, he's not funny anymore and the "being a total asshole for comedy" thing is old. Not to mention he kinda attracts the female attention-whore versions of Doug's fans.

A photo alley like the one AN has would be nice. Especially considering photo backdrops aren't really at a prime in that sort of location.

Scrap cosplay for a cure or at least do something with it thats more incentive to donate, it's getting annoying and kinda insulting.

Overall some of the panels and events could be better organized. Panel rooms were weirdly-located and really small last year and the content wasn't as engaging as it could have been. And lineups for stuff like meet and greets, autographs and Q&A were really really messy.

Can't remember names or faces right now but some of the staff didn't strike me as being totally friendly.

>Better guests if possible ... Why they still humour Spoony is beyond me

We don't humour Spoony. We had a standing contract with him until the problems hit and we weren't going to disappoint fans, nor break good faith with him just because of his politics. As of 2013, that isn't the case anymore and he's not on our guest list.

Our headliners this year include Mark Meer (Mass Effect's Commander Sheperd), brentalfloss (of brentalfloss.com fame), James Portnow (of Extra Credits and a generally prolific game dev and writer), and Doug Walker (one of our staple guests).

http://conbravo.com/guests/ <--This may help remedy any misconceptions about our guest lineup

>Panel rooms were weirdly-located and really small last year ... And lineups for stuff like meet and greets, autographs and Q&A were really really messy.

We certainly acknowledge the issues with last year's layout. There simply wasn't any more space to rent, and we did what we could with the limited options.

The new location fixes almost all of that. The HCC offers us 52,000 sq ft of event space, and we're renting about 2/3rds of it. Our space in 2012 was simply too small for the attendees and we're acknowledging that.

We're also working on how to develop better plans for lineups and the like.

>Scrap cosplay for a cure or at least do something with it thats more incentive to donate, it's getting annoying and kinda insulting.

I'd like to understand how it's annoying or insulting. Cosplay for a Cure has been really good about raising money for cancer research and they've worked together with us fantastically.

>Can't remember names or faces right now but some of the staff didn't strike me as being totally friendly.

One of our policies is to train our staff to be friendly and professional. If this is not the case, we definitely want to hear about it so we can correct the issue: info@conbravo.com

being willing to listen to this kinda stuff does get you guys points but maybe 4chan isn't the best channel to go through for handling crit? I mean, good for you guys for paying attention but I'm not sure this kinda thing totally helps.

>> No.6872866

>>6872847
I like a hands-on approach. A lot of conventions I've spoken to "hate" or "don't care about" 4chan, and yeah, it can be frustrating because of the nature of the board to listen.

But at the same time, it can be an important demographic depending on your contact. Why not take a moment to listen? If it's just hate then it's easy to ignore, drama too. But if it's genuine complaints or feedback which need to be handled, we'd much rather know than stay ignorant. For some, this is the only channel they use.

I`m not the original poster, but I can elaborate on the Cosplay for a Cure thing.

It`s kind of tacky to demand donations when taking a picture of a cosplayer. I asked one cosplayer for a photo at the con, because I loved the game she was cosplaying from. She refused, and said I could only take a photo if I went to her booth at a certain time and paid money.

I think this is unfair for a lot of different reasons. What if I couldn`t make the time for the booth? What if there was a lineup and it took forever? I`m also highly suspicious of charities, especially ones for breast cancer, because they`re known to be shady and spend more on 'awareness' and advertising rather than actual cancer research. I think it would be great to strongly encourage donations with photos, but not to deny people outright to take photos of costumes. All I wanted was a photo of a costume I thought was great, and not to be guilt tripped into donating to charity. Maybe having some fun cosplay events to promote charitable donations would be better then the whole photoshoot/banning photos thing.

Getting back on topic, well it's just really gotten worst and worst each year. It was fun when it was just like 30 people in the room but now you get like 200 people in the one room. No one gets a chance to play the minigames and it's just not as fun. Plus it just gets so loud with the screaming and yelling of the weebs.

In other words it hasn't scaled well. Suggestions for improving it (besides mere crowd control?)

>>6877748

Hmm well maybe making a pay to play system so that way you could weave out some of the younger people, cause kids never pay for anything besides kawaii~ mangas at cons.

Maybe making a pre sign up for the game? With a limit of like 50 people?

Hold more then one RL Mario Party game?

I really don't know.

>> No.6877861

>>6877794
More than one game sounds doable. The sign-up would probably be good, but it also runs the risk of ruining the party atmosphere. :\

I will be if they cut down on the number of people allowed in this year, last year it was such a clusterfuck
> Anyone arranging rooms/rides? Hotel is apparently almost booked full
What's the name of the hotel it's at again? I wonder if they still have some space left

>> No.6878424

>>6877748
If time and space allows, more than one game would be good. Maybe have one for the younger crowd and then a 18+ game? Popular demand shouldn't make it too hard to get more than one game going.
Maybe in order to control numbers without ruining the party vibe you could do what AN does with the masquerade get wristbands that ensure people's entry.

>>6875802
Personally, their methods make me rather uncomfortable too.
Their hearts are in the right place and they raise good money but they draw too much attention away from their cause and onto themselves and it feels really inauthentic and inappropriate, especially considering their overhead costs vs how much they actually raise and the lack of clarity around whether or not the cosplayers involved are donating to their own cause. It has potential to be really unique and effective but there needs to be better incentive for donating than "you get to be seen posing for a photo with this omg so popular cute girl". There's room for improvement.

It's going to be my first ConBravo, what can I expect?

And how does the Mario Party work? It sounds fun.

>> No.6879073

>>6879052
Lotta indie video guests, lotta gamers. There's also a pretty high proportion of cosplayers which is kind of strange because they don't advertise as an anime convention, but they have a lot of cosplay panels.

There's also a lot of guest participation in things which is kinda neat.

Mario Party's basically a life-sized version of the videogame with people moving around a board on the floor and playing minigames when they land on something. Silly stuff like handless jello slurping, confetti cannon showers, dance battles, that kinda thing. Roll a giant dice, etc.
