I'm going as well. I think this will be my 5'th time attending. Can't wait to see Noiz again.

This will also be a chance for me to unwind before going home to visit the family for my 23'rd birthday.

Other than that, I doubt I will be buying much, if anything. The dealer's room is great, but i'm more of an online shopper. Plus, I know if I go to the dealer's room, I will be in there for at least an hour or two, which is time I could have spent at a panel or the game room.

>> No.6844198

is the convention itself any good? who's coming this time?

>> No.6844209

>>6844198

Lot's of DBZ people.

Then convention is a lot better now than it used to be some years ago in my opinion. However, in order for it to be so you may want to try and avoid "certain stereotypes" who could ruin your con weekend.

Other than that, I usually meet some really awesome people there each year so I cannot complain.

Be warned however, the ONLY, cheap thing to eat near there is a McDonald's. Bring your own food.

>> No.6844224

>>6844198
It's a pretty awesome convention. No big names but the artist's alley and dealers room are decent, there's a pretty good variety of panels, basically everyone is super chill because there's no drama in this state, etc. There's also a free air-conditioned bus that goes to the convention center from pretty much anywhere else downtown, and rickshaws if you're parked a ways from the stops. However, like >>6844209
posted, since the downtown Chik-Fil-A is closed on weekends, you're pretty limited if you're on a food budget and aren't familiar with downtown. Also, it's always a bajillion fucking degrees so keep that in mind if you haven't already decided what you're going to wear. BRING WATER. Also protip: the Starbucks in the hotel connected to the convention center jacks up prices like you're in an airport. Go to Crema on Fayetteville Street instead for drinks and coffee.

>> No.6844237

I'm going to this for the first time this year, does anyone have any general tips or suggestions (other than what was already said about food)?

>> No.6844244

>>6844237

Nothing outside of the usual con-rules.

Plan ahead your panels but leave yourself some free exploration time. Do not be shy, walk around and explore, talk to people. Stay away from the obvious and attend things you would not normally attend to expand your horizon and broaden your experience.

Doesn't look like I'll have any cosplays. I had a rough semester, so I didn't have much time to work on things. I was really hoping to have Johnny Joestar for AZ, but that'll have to wait, maybe Otakon.

Anyone going to the formal dance? I haven't been to a con with one of those before, and I'm really curious about how they usually turn out. I'm not big on the raves, but I sort of know how to ball room dance, so I figure it might be worth checking out.

>>6844258
There are some organizational problems with the con, I think, but I don't think I've ever been to a con I thought was free of those sorts of problems. The problems at AZ just stick out more to me because I volunteer there.

Just a couple creepers who lack social skills who can be a bit pushy or think your sexually interested in them just because of 1 dance.

Urgh. My Mabel Pines cancelled on me. She was perfect - fan of the show and could do a really great impression of Kristen Schaal's voice. Great hair for the role and a fitting personality. I made the sweater for her and everything along with a few props: plush waddles, the "Lady Mabelton" fake ID, a few clone hats in case we met up with a few other Dippers.

I know, I know - low effort costume. But I really tried my hardest to make this a pair that would look good. We both do contact juggling and had a few crazy "TWINS!" acts planned.

This awful picture does not feature that same friend, but you get the idea. The stars are and letters were all coated in glow in the dark paint, but that is probably going to be impossible to demonstrate outside of a video room.

Can I complain about the staff for a moment? My friend waited in line for two hours for the Dragon Ball Z East vs. West thing, got in and had to go to the bathroom after a little while. She left her stuff with her boyfriend and ran.
When she got back, one of the staff members wouldn't let her back in, not even to get her stuff and tell her boyfriend where she was. It pisses me off she had to sit in the hall and wait until her boyfriend realized she had been gone forever and went to check on her. Then they were both locked out.
She explained to the guy that she had just been in there and he didn't care.

It may just be my lack of fucks to give after a whole weekend of being at the convention but it just seems like that would be common sense. If you're in an event, don't get up and leave because odds are if there was a queue for it, they'll have people to make sure no one gets in after it starts. Should have pissed before you got in line or just held it until after the panel.

Shouldn't they announce they won't let you back in if you leave? Most events like that do.
Also, I didn't state this before but the same guy who watched her leave wouldn't let her back in.
I'm not exactly sure whether or not she had to pee before going in, but what if she didn't? You don't control when you have to pee.

>> No.6864913

>>6864904
No, I've never heard any went at Animazement announce that. If she had to leave she should have asked the staffer if she would be allowed back in.

Once again, sucks for her but cry more. Should have either toughed it out or asked before she left if she'd be allowed back in. And before you get offended I say this because yes, it's happened to me. I was upset but hey, I just left expecting they'd let me back in after they closed the doors. If the doors are closed, you ain't getting back in.

>> No.6864927

>>6864904
Just because it happened to you doesn't make it a good idea. They should announce those things. You don't leave a room only because you have to pee. You could have to take care of your kid, get a phone call, fix a wardrobe malfuction, ect.
Sorry you're still upset it happened to you. When there's a communication peoblem, it should be fixed.

Lucky you -- I came looking for anything Jojo and I got SQUAT. If I liked Naruto or One Piece, though, I woulda been rolling in merch but noooooooo...

Also, maybe it's my age talking, but there were a loooot of very young teenagers cavorting around. Most of the kids were cosplaying Homestuck and My Little Pony from what I could see, leaving a dearth of cosplay from anything else. I ended up taking a lot of pictures of lolitas to make up for that. =/

And the masquerade was just sad - a lot of Vocaloid routines and awkward teenage karaoke. I guess I was just spoiled by the Kuroshitsuji silent film comedy skit and the Baccano swing dance number from last year.

Also, if you guys didn't make it to the panel with Ryuusei Nakao, guy is hilarious and really personable. I'm going to go to any panels he hosts next year too.

I took pictures but they will take a while to edit. If this thread lives by the time I get them edited I will post them. If not, I hope there''ll be an Animazement picture dump thread.

From what I remember of the judging in general: The tiny little Card Captor Sakura kid got the Youth Division (she was the only one that entered), there were a ton of little awards for what I guess was hall costumes (including a Harle and some Trinity Blood costumes), the large latino man who did that Lupin letter-reading skit got a judge award from one of the judges for its uniqueness, and >>6871325 covered the rest basically. I don't know why I stayed to see all of that.

Not only price-jacked, but it was pretty lack-luster in the merch department. Despite there being some really recent and popular series (Highschool of the Dead, Shingeki no Kyojin, Dengan Ronpa, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, etc.) I would say 80% of the merch was all Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, and Gundam. Um... thanks, but I kind of would like some variety?

Also, I could only find one tiny box of doujins at someone's table. That's just sad. I think last year or the year before some girls had a whole booth with them but this year there was just a tiny cardboard bank box full of popular series (Hetalia, Full Metal Alchemist, etc.)

I spent most of my money on some cheap Vampire Hunter D novels (I'm a sucker for pulp fiction, sue me) and the Artist's Alley.

SPEAKING OF ... the Artist Alley was a little, um... varied in terms of talent. I think the upper deck Alley had a lot of artists who don't know how to flip-check their work -- lot of pancake/slide-face/squinch-face going on in their super kawaii animu drawings. It made me cringe -- freaking CHECK YOUR WORK! Either hold it up to a mirror or put it upside-down on a light-table, hell, if it's digital just horizontally flip it and SEE IF YOUR PROPORTIONS ARE CORRECT. I mean, geez!

There were also artists that decided to use what was probably 40lb or less copy paper to print things like bookmarks or prints. (Probably because it was cheap.) Dude, no. You have to use at LEAST 80-100 text weight paper. It's a print, not homework!

Yeah, true, but I saw a lot of cheap bento and stationary from Daiso (Japanese dollar store chain) being sold for $4-$7 dollars, so there's that too. Thankfully, I recognized Daiso's brand name so I was like "Nope, not even going to bother."

Hell, I remember people selling things like Ramune, Pocky, etc., and I was like "What the fuck? Who is silly enough to buy these?" You can buy Pocky, Yan Yan, and Hello Panda domestically (I get mine from the Target dollar bins), and for the stuff you can't like Ramune there are always asian markets in town that sell them. I have one near me that sells the Thai versions of candy and drinks.

Teenagers. They can find pocky in Walmart but if you sell larger than normal boxes, they'll buy them. Just like people will buy kawaii things even if it's something super cheap with a nyan face on it.
