So from lurking HSG I've learned that it's easy to be cringeworthy when cosplaying Homestuck.

First time cosplayer here, planning to do a Meulin in a month. Any general tips? I don't want to look like an ass.

Also have a Dualscar & Mindfang I found at ACEN. Pretty damn good IMO but HSG seems a tough crowd.

I suggest dying a white shirt and socks together instead of buying already colored ones. This way, there would be less searching on google for the right color and your clothes would be almost of the same shade of green, which is a lot more appealing than the lime greens or dark olives mixup between the Meulins.

Regardless, I'd probably keep my hood off since I wouldn't want to mess with the spikes and styling of the wig, but I'd still just wish to seek insight.

Also, how would I go about making the princely pantaloons? Are there shorts I could buy, or I'm going to have to make them (or since I buy commission services, get them made)?

Finally, would the WP shirt be acceptable for this?

I have a question for you guys. I used to be heavily involved with Homestuck last year and enjoyed cosplaying and everything. I'm kind of falling out of it though, but I still get invited to all the events and such by the local homestuck group.

I really liked them, they were really sweet, but I was never close to any of them. I found a couple people in the group annoying of course, but they're a great bunch and even invited me to go group cosplay with them and encouraged me to audition for a panel.

But like I said, I'm getting tired of homestuck. I still think it would be fun (maybe) but, should I even try if I'm not going to enjoy it as much as I used to?

And, darn, pardon the size of the image, didn't realize it would be that big.

Feeling gutsy, so here's my GT John outfit from today.

Of note:
The symbol on the shirt isn't entirely noticeable, the colours of the shirt and symbol should be improved. I just found a better coloured base shirt in a store somewhere and when I improve upon this cosplay I will look for that shirt and print on a symbol that will hopefully stand out more.

Not sure how great the hood is, I think it's decent but since it was given to me I'm going to have to get them to fine tune it when needed, but the flaws weren't glaringly noticeable (at least I hope not!)

Shoes are not pictured, but I found some nice yellow shoes that work great. Going into details the edges are white and they need to be blue. So, what paint works over rubber?

Zillyhoo is HUGE and heavy, a lot of people liked it though, but probably because it was so big. The star kind of broke off a few times and the handle still needs some security, but some more adhesiveness (hot glue, duct tape, modpodge, etc) should clear that right up.

Wig, well, I think it looks okay, maybe too bushy or too much for John's hair but it does have spikes, I'm personally satisfied with it but I'd like to hear some other thoughts.

Glasses and pants I'm satisfied with.

How am I doing so far?

Hood isn't bright/dark/blue enough, I'd say It also looks kind of flat. I'd just remake it in a better fabric, honestly. Aside from the shirt that you have already noted, I think you're a pretty decent John. The wig probably could be styled better, though. It's not that it's a horrible job, it just doesn't really look like John's hair.

Whoa, thanks. Unfortunately, I didn't take too many shots of myself, but I was at a Homestuck photoshoot. It was pretty windy, though. That probably messed up the styling a bit, as you can probably see in the attached image. If better pictures surface after the weekend (this one attached was somehow sent to me right at the photoshoot, someone must have had a good internet connection out there), I'll post it.

You can see the shirt and symbol do look a bit too similar here in colour, they do contrast, but I feel like it's not enough. There were even other God Tier Johns around that I felt had better colours.

As for the pants, I had to get them shorter initially since they were pretty big, should I make them shorter?

How I personally do it is to paint as close to the eye as I can manage, powder/seal, then cover the gap by shading with eyeshadow and applying eyeliner, if it helps?

I use both Snazaroo and Ben Nye and honestly I apply both the same way. If it helps, get a smaller brush to apply the paint around the eye area, I don't know what you're using to apply the paint but a small brush should help you with getting the smaller corners around the eye area, then eyeliner/eyeshadow should be able to help cover the rest.
Also I think you're thinking of mascara? I don't use mascara outside of troll cosplay, so I'm probably not gonna be of much use on this since I just use Daiso stuff, but I guess just don't get anything that says 'volumizing' or 'lengthening'? As long as you don't put too much on you should be alright imo.

Actually if it helps at all, I once got Steel Grey by mistake when I was ordering ben nye and had to mix it with TONS of white to get it the right shade for trolls...

I actually think that it would do well for Grimdark, maybe lightening it JUST slightly.
When used next to white it looks just like black, as an FYI.

Also as a warning, I've also found that color (as well as white) have a habit of making ANYONE'S teeth look WICKED yellow. So just be warned. Try not to show too much teeth in pictures.

There's a couple different types of pointed you can get from here, and I can vouch for the quality.
Apply using spirit gum (make sure to get remover too or it'll be hell getting them off) and then use liquid latex to cover the seam.
Googling 'prosthetic application' will pop up plenty of tutorials to hold your hand while you apply them!

Not the same person but as someone who's seen other shoots in the area bunch of us sat there and watched kids get grabbed and look extremely uncomfortable. The two girls who ran it gave no speech at the beginning about how it is not okay and how consent is something that needs to be talked about before posing for shipping pictures, especially since that has been a big issue in the GTA. They really should have checked in with the other groups before thinking it was a good idea to run a shoot when they know nothing about the area.

What I never understood about shipping photos at large meets is why anyone thinks it's a good idea. By running up when your character is called you're pretty much allowing a complete stranger to invade your personal space for a series of unflattering and uncomfortable photos. I would much rather have a private shoot with someone I know and get more relaxed poses. Isn't it better when both cosplayers look like they're enjoying it then "ugh I guess I'll tolerate this"..

Okay so my friend mailed this wig to me, it is quite long and I'm a bit afraid to cut wigs but I can probably deal with that.

no clue if it's the guy i'm thinking of, but a while back (maybe a couple of months ago?) there was a kid who got pretty well known around the toronto homestuck community (not just "torontostuck" but just events in the area in general) for touching girls without asking first. Apparently it pissed a few people off, and made a bunch more uncomfortable. i haven't heard much about it lately though, so maybe it got figured out. I just remember overhearing someone talking about it back around December at a con.

I know who you're referring to but no, that's not that same kid. There's actually been a whole bunch of issues with unwanted contact, not just one person. We've got a few touchy guys and a few gropey girls in Ontario. the one just keeps getting brought up on here because they've actually been banned from a certain group. Which is funny, because the group that banned them hosts all the others who have strikes against them elsewhere... Its why its important to have a 'do not touch anyone without consent' speech at the beginning of a shoot. Especially for new homestucks who don't know how to behave in a group setting. I know there were a few there this weekend, and even though my girlfriend and I weren't in charge of this shoot we still had to tell some kids to calm down.

Okay, so. I don't host anything, I just attend things. I do tend to go to events and I wander around, without much people to talk to. I've got pretty bad social skills, and I made a few people really uncomfortable. I never intend to, but it always happens. To the situations and people I AM aware of, I have profusely apologized, but to little avail. It just makes me keep to myself even more.

As for the other part, I do not remember doing any such thing in a photoshoot. And if I did, again, it was unintentional.

And yup, I've usually been Dave (I am guilty, the outfit's rather easy, but I do hope to improve upon it with swords and iShades at some point), but I've started to work more on my John cosplay too.

All in all, intentions get misconstrued, my lack of social skills screw me over, but I'm willing to improve and apologize for my wrongdoings.
